A Letter from the LeadershipExcellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. ~ Aristotle

For 57 years the Minnesota International Center (MIC) has worked to provide a bridge between Minnesota’s citizen diplomats and people of other countries. In 2009-10, we kept a strong focus on our mission of inspiring our community to understand global issues and cultures in an ever changing world and worked hard to be outstanding stewards of the trust our members place in us:

• MIC was recognized nationally and locally for excellence with our Great Decisions program receiving one of five prestigious Frank R. Cella Memorial Awards from the Foreign Policy Association in New York City and being designated “Best Lecture Series in the Twin Cities” by Minnesota Monthly magazine;

• MIC was instrumental in obtaining passage of a resolution in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the National Council for International Visitors, and designating February 16, 2011, as “Citizen Diplomacy Day.” The Resolution commends the achievements of the thousands of citizen diplomats who have worked for generations to share the best of the United States with foreign leaders, specialists, and scholars participating in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). MIC welcomed approximately 400 international visitors in Minnesota last year under the auspices of the IVLP and one of MIC’s founders, Gladys Brooks, helped create COSERV for the United States, which was the forerunner of the National Council for International Visitors;

• The Celebration of Malaysia gala, held at the beautiful home of Bob and Polly McCrea and chaired by board member Sharon Lim, was MIC’s most successful gala to-date, surpassing our revenue goal by more than 35%;

• MIC reintroduced a Culture Through Cuisine program for members, hosting a dinner at Peninsula Malaysian Cuisine in May;

• MIC hosted a very successful visit with Ichiro Fujisaki, Ambassador of Japan, who noted: “Thank you so much for inviting me to visit Minnesota and for all your efforts in arranging a great itinerary. I enjoyed the trip immensely. It was a stimulating two days, and I hope to have the opportunity to visit again”;

• MIC’s 9th annual WorldQuest was sold out once again and raised $25,000 for our K-12 education program;• MIC created a WorldQuest program for corporate members, hosting the inaugural event with 32 teams of

enthusiastic General Mills employees, who noted that it was “simply a ton of fun”;• MIC delivered 1,179 World Cultures Day presentations to a student audience of 34,000 in Minnesota

schools.

Your generosity to MIC has made it possible for us to deliver citizen diplomacy to Minnesota for the past 57 years. With your support we will continue to have a strong and enduring impact on our community and our world.

Carol Engebretson Byrne Susan PlimptonMIC President MIC Board Chair

For MIC’s K-12 education program, International Classroom Connection, 113 speakers from 48 countries made 1,179 presentations to a student audience of 34,000. MIC conducted 11 training workshops for international speakers and 10 intercultural workshops for educators.

Highlights of 2009-10

MIC presented 6 World Affairs Forums with an attendance of 727; and worked with 62 community partners to bring additional internationally-focused programs to Minnesota audiences.

Great Decisions — a nationally-recognized model for foreign policy discussions in private homes, colleges, universities and workplaces across the state — convened 429 meetings for 61 groups with an attendance of 11,145. MIC also held its second annual Great Decisions Conference in October 2009 which was attended by 90 participants.

Sincere thanks to the 884 people who gave their time to support the activities of the Minnesota International Center as event volunteers, IVLP resources and escorts, dinner hosts, Great Decisions speakers and leaders, classroom speakers, members of our Benefit and Facilities committees, interns and administrative help.

At WorldQuest, an international trivia competition, 40 teams comprising 320 participants competed to test their knowledge of “all things international.” For Academic WorldQuest, the public competition’s companion for high schools students, where the winning team is sent – all expenses paid – to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level, 112 students from 15 high schools fielded 28 teams.

MIC’s State Department-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) partnered with 290 local professional resources to arrange 419 appointments for 380 visitors from 105 countries and regions to strengthen connections and exchange between local and international professional peers.

MIC’s dinner hosting program arranged 301 dinners with MIC members for 366 international guests from 91 countries — a uniquely personal way of opening global doors for our community.

MIC engaged with 41 local companies by offering 3 international networking cocktails and 8 collaborative programs on doing business internationally to more than 750 Minnesota-based professionals.

MIC’s benefit celebrating Malaysia was attended by 305 guests and raised $208,000. The 2010-11 benefit focus country will be France.

The International Visitor Leadership Program is a medium for professional and cultural exchange amongst emerging leaders. The majority of MIC’s participants come to Minnesota under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State. As part of a national program lasting 3 weeks, visitors are typically here for 3-4 days and MIC arranges their schedule to include such events as professional meetings, cultural activities and dinner hosting.
