While stationedin Sikeston, Missouri, he metAdagene Bowman, to whom hewas married for 70 years until herdeath in 2011.

In 1942, the Dixons moved toMiami Shores where they built ahome and raised their family. Hebecame a pilot for EasternAirlines, flying under contract forthe Army Air Corps MilitaryTransport Division to SouthAmerican and African duringWorld War II. He continued as anEastern pilot for 25 years.

Over the ensuring years, manyPanelfold employees lived inMiami Lakes. The nearness ofPanelfold’s factory in the GratignyIndustrial Park and the plannedcommunity atmosphere of MiamiLakes was an attraction for highlyqualified executives and skilledworkers from which Panelfoldbenefited.

Today, the company is ownedby second and third generations ofthe Dixon family. Over the years,Panelfold has provided employ-ment for tens of thousands ofSouth Florida residents and else-where.

In 1984, the Dixons built theiroceanfront retirement dream homeat the Ocean Reef Club in theFlorida Keys where they liveduntil they moved to Miami Lakesin 2006 to be closer to family.

“While my family is saddenedby the passing of my mother,Adagene, three years ago, anddad’s passing in early March, weare more than gratified that theyhad the positive experience of liv-ing on the edges of Graham DairyLake at Regatta Pointe for thoseremaining years,” said BethGeyer. “The glistening lake withits abundant wild bird life, and thecoming and goings of many air-craft using Opa Locka Airport,

made every day an exciting onefor both of them. My dad evenidentified many of those aircraftby the sound of their engines.

“He was invited by thenMiami-Dade Aviation Departmentdirector Jose Abreu to visit OpaLocka Airport to see the in-processrestoration of the Eastern AirlinesDC7B, which later on, fullyrestored, flew right over his home.My dad had been a captain on thatvery same aircraft.”

Miami Lakes Fencing Club celebrated fourthanniversary hosting ‘Young Superstars’ tourney

The Miami Lakes Fencing Clubcelebrated its fourth anniversaryon March 22 as it hosted the“Young Superstars” tournamentfor fencers 14 years old and under.

More than 40 boys and girlscompeted across Y10, Y12 andY14 categories in both foil andepee. The event, sanctioned by theUSA Fencing Association, washeld at Epiphany EpiscopalChurch, 15650 Miami LakewayNorth. It attracted members ofmany local and regional clubs

including the Hollywood FencingClub, Masters Fencing Academyof North Miami Beach, EpeeMiami Fencing Club of SouthMiami, Southwest Florida FencingClub from Ft. Myers, GenesisFencing Club of Melbourne, and aFrench competitor, EstherRoucaute, who was enjoying herspring break in South Florida.

Fencing is a classic Olympicsport that enhances focus, disci-pline, self-confidence, flexibility, coordination and strategic think-ing, and can be practice by anyonefrom 6 years old through 80 ormore.

“On top of being a sport thatadults can take up at any age, itoffers the rare opportunity toactively participate alongside yourchildren,” said Gary Cardenas, assistant coach of the MiamiLakes Fencing Club, and father ofAlexander Cardenas (12) who wona bronze medal in the Y14 epeeevent.

“We’re actually looking for-ward to later this year when Alexturns 13 at which point, he will beeligible to participate in open divi-sion events and that means we canfind ourselves facing each other inofficial competition,” Cardenassaid.

Fencing as a sport has showngrowth in the past five years inSouth Florida, and it is gainingpopularity especially amongteenagers. “I know from my both-ers, who are in college, that fenc-ing is a very well regarded sport in

many good schools and I like itbecause it is really fun,” saidEsteban Guio (15), a Miami Lakesresident and member of the club.

Many colleges, as well as theUSA Fencing Association, offerscholarship opportunities forfencers. And unlike other colle-giate sports such as football andbaseball, within fencing there arefar greater opportunities for theathletes to actually participate andexcel.

“Our goals are not only todevelop our students’ athletic abil-ities and love of the sport, but toprovide them scholarship opportu-nities for college,” said head coach

and Maestro Javier Andino.Several of his former students arecurrently attending major universi-ties and fencing under scholarshipawards.

I-Tree software suite assesses town’s tree canopyThe beautiful tree canopies in

Miami Lakes have long been thesignature of the town; however, after a recent study conducted bythe Town’s Community andLeisure Services Department, town management now knows thatthe trees also contribute signifi-cantly to the environment, humanhealth, energy savings, and qualityof life in the region.

The initial assessment of thetown’s trees was done using the I-Tree software suite which indicat-ed that Miami Lakes has an esti-mated 17,832 trees. Tree canopy inMiami Lakes is estimated to be 30

percent. The four most commonspecies in the regional forest wereSouthern Live Oak (37.5 percent),Geometry Tree (21.5 percent),Palmetto (10.1 percent), and WestIndian Mahogany (6.4 percent). The four most commons speciesaccount for 75.7 percent of alltrees; in total, 316 tree specieswere sampled in Miami Lakes.

Trees have been proven toaffect energy consumption byshading buildings and providingevaporative cooling. Trees tend toreduce energy consumption duringtimes of elevated outside tempera-tures, especially in the summer

months. The assessment calculatedthat the trees in Miami Lakesreduce energy costs from residen-tial buildings by approximately$231,000 annually.

The Miami Lakes tree canopyalso contributes significantly to theenvironment, the economy, andresidents’ well-being. That canopy, and particularly leaf surface area, provides a wide range of importantenvironmental benefits includingair pollution removal, reduced car-bon emissions, carbon storage andsequestration, and reduced energyuse for buildings, among manyother contributions.

The town’s Tree ManagementPlan will serve as a collaborativeaction road map to conserve, pro-tect, enhance, and sustain theregions’ trees and canopy. Thedevelopment and implementation

of the Tree Management Plan willinspire residents, landowners, andcommunities to plant and protecttrees, and provide stewardship toensure the incredible resourcesthat trees provide.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

Honoring unsung heroes in our communityWhenever you have an emer-

gency you know that if you call 9-1-1, help will be on the way. Mostoften, people just take the time tothink the front-line responders, butthey don’t realize all of the work ittakes behind the scenes to getthem there.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue(MDFR) dispatchers work 24hours a day, 365 days a year. Theyare part psychologists, part sup-port system and 100 percentunsung heroes.

Every year those heroes are rec-ognized during the Association ofPublic Safety CommunicationsOfficials (APCO) International’sNational Public SafetyTelecommunications Week. Thisyear’s event runs from April 6-12.The event was created to honorand recognize those who dedicatetheir lives to serving the public.

In 2013, MDFR dispatchersmoved to a new home in our head-

quarters in Doral. The dispatchcenter is 5,300-square-feet, givingdispatchers more work space. Thenew center boasts state-of-the-artcommunications equipment forregional fire rescue dispatch, com-mand and control. This new evolu-tion in interoperability communi-cations readies the dispatchers andfirefighters for the next generationof technology.

The Miami-Dade PoliceDepartment receives 9-1-1- callsfirst. Then requests for fire sup-pression and emergency medicalservices (EMS) get transferred toMDFR. Dispatchers play a criticalrole, as they are the point of con-tact between the public and fieldunits.

Dispatchers jump into action assoon as a call is received. Like anorchestra, the dispatchers take onthe role of the conductor. Theylocate where the incident is hap-pening, see what units are closestto the scene, and evaluate howmany units need to be dispatched.

When dealing with significantevents, such as a brush fire, dis-patchers go into overdrive. Morethan one dispatcher will handle acall of this magnitude. Each dis-patcher takes on a different role. One will handle dispatching theunits, while another will see whereadditional units are located in casethey are needed and will commu-nicate with other agencies. A thirddispatcher will make calls to moveunits so that every part of Miami-Dade County is covered torespond to calls.

With their quick thinking, fire-rescue dispatchers significantlycontribute to the reduction ofdeaths and loss of property byeffectively coordinating emer-gency responses. On average, dis-patchers process more than230,000 fire and EMS calls a year.

All of the behind-the-scenescontributions that dispatchersmake truly make them unsungheroes in our community.

Student’s perspective on recent FBLA competitionBy Melissa ReySpecial to The Miami LakerThis year's Future Business

Leaders of America (FBLA) statecompetition was much more than astudent business conference. Inthose four days, as a member ofthe Monsignor Edward Pace HighSchool competition team, I forged

new friendships, found my confi-dence, and changed my perceptionof the business world.

In the days that led up to thecompetition I was nervous butsoon I had forgotten my anxiety. After settling in, I prepared for mypublic speaking competition. Fullof confidence and excitement, I

began to speak to the otherteenagers who were competing inthe “Public Speaking” category. Iwas met by students who sharedtheir life and academic experi-ences with me, and because of myinteractions with them, I have notonly become a better student, but amore confident and tolerant indi-

vidual. Although I did not win the com-

petition, this experience expandedmy boundaries, and capabilities asa student and individual. I lost myfear of speaking in public. On thecontrary, I now genuinely enjoycompeting in these events becauseI am able to reach out to other peo-ple and they are able to reach outto me. Through these interactions,we are exposed to people and cul-tures we have never known, whichgives us a better, well-roundedperspective of the world around us.

Over the following three days, Ispent time with my fellow com-petitors. We helped each other, andbecause I chose to participate inthis great organization, I have real-ized that we have preconceivednotions about everything, andwhen we allow those preconceivedideas to affect our decisions, welimit ourselves. I definitelyencourage every student to joinFBLA and to experience the statecompetition. It will challenge yourideas, and encourage growth.
