In November of 2006, aMiami Gardens youngmother of four thought herlife was over when shewas diagnosed with breastcancer. She recalled daysof her youth when she,“hoped to get some boo-bies some day." She neverthought those same “boo-bies” would change herlife.
This is the triumphantstory of Breazetha Smith,a breast cancer survivor!
Her story like mostwomen started whiledoing her own self-breast examination; she
detected a lump in herbreast. She immediatelyscheduled a doctor’sappointment to have amammogram. That sameday she also had an ultra-sound and a biopsy to makesure that she was coveringall of her bases. Two weekslater the results came backpositive. Like most womenshe determined that it was adeath sentence. She imme-diately said to herself uponreceiving the news, “I guessI’m gonna die from can-cer.”
Life became very stressful for Smith. Not
only was she battling cancer, but she was alsostruggling to make ends meet. All she couldthink about was the well being of her fourchildren. Smith was working two jobs andraising four kids alone. Her bills were pastdue and her home was in foreclosure. Herfuture seemed bleak.
Two weeks after the diagnosis she under-went the procedure to have a port put in forchemotherapy. Breazetha underwent 10 treat-ments of chemotherapy in addition to 41 treat-ments of radiation. In July of 2007, Breazethaunderwent a bilateral mastectomy to haveboth of her breasts removed.

Scared but assured after recoveringfrom her double mastectomy “Brezzy”, asshe is affectionately known to friends andfamily, decided to change her outlook andwas determined to survive and keep a roofover the heads of her four children.
She returned to work for Miami-DadeCounty Public Schools System where shehas been employed for the past 18 yearsand has been part of the City of MiamiGardens family for 5 years.
While bouncing back from her healthscare, few years later, tragedy struck herfamily once again. On January 28, 2010her 20 year old son was fatally gunneddown in Opa-Locka.
With her life looking upside downagain, she refused to give up. She still hadthree kids to provide and live for. Her old-est daughter, now 22, stood by her sidethrough everything along with her motherand sister. Smith knew that she needed tobe resilient and show her surviving chil-dren that she was strong and no matterhow tough life got, “never give up.”
Today life is better for her. She stillmourns the loss of her son, but she findsgreat joy in spending time with her otherchildren, grandson, family and closefriends.
Through her health challenge and loss,
her faith kept her encouraged and with theblessing of being able to work two jobsshe has saved her home from foreclosure.
Turning tragedy into triumph, thisamazing woman took control of her situa-tion.
Like many breast cancer survivors thathave their breasts removed, Brezzy feelsas if she isn’t a complete woman. Not hav-ing breasts limits the type of clothing thatshe wears and now like the days of heryouth she again looks forward to gettingsome “boobies.”
“There's hope. There's treatment. Don’tgive up,” This is a story about BreazethaSmith, a breast cancer survivor!

During the month of October, the City ofMiami Gardens Golden Garden SeniorProgram hosted an exciting night filledwith fun, food and educational informationon breast cancer. This event is held annual-ly by Aventura Hospital and MedicalCenter in conjunction with AventuraDiagnostic Breast Center and the AventuraComprehensive Cancer Center. This eventwas the peak of a month-long initiative toelevate awareness and early detection forbreast cancer by promoting annual mam-mograms.
According to the American CancerSociety, breast cancer will affect well over200,000 new women by the end of 2011,but if breast cancer is detected early, thefive-year survival rate is about 96 percent. The mission of Women’s Night Out was tocelebrate over two million survivors in theUnited States who have survived breastcancer due to improved treatments, pre-emptive methods, and increased mammog-raphy screening rates.
This event provided many individuals
with the needed awareness regarding thethreats of breast cancer and the valuableinformation about this disease. The City ofMiami Gardens staff and participants wereentertained and thoroughly educated at thisspectacular event. Women’s Night Out
provided our seniorswith an amazingevening and the truemeaning of BreastCancer AwarenessMonth.

Councilman Williams Helps FamiliesCreate Success and Achieve Prosperity
Now, maybe more than ever, we mustcontinue to help those families that arestruggling through hard times. I want toshare what I'm doing to help the hardworking families of my city that face a17% unemployment rate, which is higherthan the County's or the country's rate.
I support Trinity-Peacemakers Churchin Miami Gardens ("Peacemakers")which helps families access public bene-fits that will help them become self suffi-cient. Peacemakers is part of theDepartment of Children and FamiliesACCESS Network that offers foodstamps, Medicaid and temporary cashassistance.
Families can save time by comingdirectly to Peacemakers located at 17801NW 2nd Avenue in Miami Gardens toapply for the benefits. Families can alsoaccess other self sufficiency services atthe church. If you, a friend or familymember needs assistance, please call786-888-4357 for an appointment with astaff member who can help you or pro-vide you more information.
We can build a better future for all ofall us and change lives every day by help-ing our friends and neighbors in need.

•• COUNCIL CORNER •• Financial Planning During the Holidays?
To a lesser or greater degree, we are ei-ther savers or spenders. The commercial-ization of the Holiday season is certainlythere to constantly remind us to spend asmuch as we can.
May I suggest that you keep your bear-ings with your financial condition duringthese frenzied shopping days. What youhave minus what you owe equals what isleft over. If the left over is a positive num-ber then you are still on track toward financial stability.
In terms of gifts, does the person you are buying for really need
another sweater in Miami? Perhaps a gift of letting them know howspecial they are to you and how they make the world a better placewould stay in their heart long after the sweater is worn out.
As for saving, I suggest that you can be kind to yourself by im-proving your financial condition by opening or adding to your IRAas a Holiday present to yourself.
There’s more excitement in paying down on those credit cardsrather than adding to their balances. There’s no one there to saythank you for doing it, but your peace of mind should not need thecompliments of others. The road to financial independence is un-fortunately the road that is less traveled, especially in the “spendingseason”.
May I respectfully suggest that you look beyond your needs and
desires to think of a person less fortunate than you. You do nothave to think a lot to realize that your life would be happier if youstopped your routine to provide someone some kindness. Thenyou will have a real gift that no store or online service can provide.

•• COUNCIL CORNER ••
Thanksgiving is always seen as a timeto show thanks, but what is often over-looked is that Thanksgiving is the begin-ning of the season of giving.
As was the case on Saturday, November19, 2011 when Councilman Oliver Gilbert(Miami Gardens, Seat 6) partnered with100 Black Men of South Florida, thebrothers of the Sigma Alpha Chapter ofOmega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated,UPS, and the Lambda Tau Chapter of PhiBeta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated toprovide and distribute 250 warm turkeydinners to the residents of Robert SharpTowers in Miami Gardens and the guestsof Betty T. Ferguson Community Center, also in Miami Gardens.
“Everyone should have the opportunityto have Thanksgiving dinner” saidCouncilman Gilbert. “No matter whatproblems they face, everyone has a reasonto be thankful.”
Indeed they do have a reason to bethankful of Councilman Gilbert’s effortsthis holiday season. Earlier in that day, theCouncilman partnered with San Salvador
Masonic Lodge of Miami, FL to providewhat could only be described as a couplehundred turkeys to families.
The following Tuesday, November 22,2011, Councilman Gilbert partnered with
Ted Lucas to deliver Turkeys to the homesof residents in Miami Gardens.
This show of good will to the residentsby Councilman Gilbert will go a long waytowards curbing the cost of having
Thanksgivings for those families duringthese difficult economic times.Thanksgiving is the beginning of the sea-son of giving, and it will not be over-looked by those residents.

BY SHELLIE RANSOM
Recently, I was afforded the distincthonor of serving as Principal for the Day atCarol City Middle School. It was a specialopportunity and a very rewarding experi-ence because I walked away with a brandnew perspective and respect for the educa-tors that educate our children daily.
My day at Carol City began promptly at7:00am; walking the school halls withAssistant Principal Althea Dacosta, unlocking classroom doors while studentswere going to their homerooms. Seeingthe students milling about and talking totheir friends brought back many pleasantmemories of my time in middle school. While many things have changed, a lot hasnot:
The school bell rang at 7:20a.m., signal-ing the beginning of the school day for thestudents. There was a rhythm to the rou-tine, and the students were well aware ofit. Other than the technology in the class-rooms and the style of dress, everythingseemed familiar too me.
Once the students were in class, themorning announcements were made vialive broadcast, scripted and produced bythe students. During morning announce-ments, I was introduced by the local stu-dent reporter and I briefly greeted the stu-dent body and shared with them that Iwould be their “Principal for the Day”.
As the day rolled on, I had the oppor-tunity to sit in on Principal Joyce Jones’“Data Chat” with some of the Science andLanguage Arts teachers. During the “DataChat”, student performance statistics fromthe baseline and benchmark testing admin-istered earlier in the school year arereviewed. The “Data Chat” revealed thatoverall, the school has made substantialgains in proficiency; however, the teachersare still faced with many challenges to nar-rowing the success gap between low- andhigh-level students. The teachers statedthat the tests require high-level criticalthinking skills which are proving to be achallenge for many students.
While our teachers face the challenge ofproviding the standard academic instruc-tion to their students, they also face thechallenge of raising test scores, in additionengaging the students through gainingtheir buy-in of the proposed strategies forsuccessful testing.
Teachers face many other challengesthat distract or hinder students from learn-ing, including crowded classrooms, issuesrelated to socio-economic status, poor
study habits and most notably, lack ofparental involvement which is a majorconcern. The lack of parent participationin parent/teacher conferences as a preven-tive measure to student failure is a primaryconcern for most educators. Based onMiami-Dade County School Board statis-tics, the overwhelming majority of stu-dents attending the school are economical-ly disadvantaged. Many parents must worklong hours or in many cases, work morethan one job, sometimes more than two, inorder to make ends meet.
In spite of the challenges that attempt todefy the rules of learning and education, the teachers I met are committed to think-ing outside the box; implementing newideas, alternative teaching methods andtesting strategies to accommodate eachstudent’s learning style.
As the day went on, I became engagedin many day-to-day activities performedby Principal Jones. Although teaching isrewarding, the system has some draw-backs that often make it difficult to get thejob done. Carol City Middle School iscurrently under enrolled with a studentbody of approximately 680 students. Many of the students are being transferredto other schools under No Child LeftBehind, which translates into fewerresources available to Carol City MiddleSchool students.
While the school administration istasked manage the school with littleresources available to them, the studentsare still fortunate to have a dedicated teamof educators who believe in the business oflearning; to provide students with a quali-ty education and prepare them, not onlyfor the next phase of higher education, butfor a successful future.
The most entertaining part of my daywas lunch duty. I monitored the lunchroom to ensure the students were behavingthemselves appropriately. During thistime, I took the opportunity to sit and talkto some of the students. They were quiteinquisitive asking a number of differentquestions. Walking the halls, I was greetedwith hugs and smiles from the students.
My day ended at the faculty lunch whichwas most appetizing. I would like to thankPrincipal Jones, Assistant PrincipalDaCosta, and Assistant Principal Floresfor a most memorable day. The insightgained has really been invaluable and witha new perspective on education, I hope tobe part of the solution that brings moreresources to the school as well as a posi-tive influence on our youth!

upset, insist-ing that shehad been asafe driver forover 20 yearsand there is noway she would
have run a red light, even on a right turn.
After calming down, a City stafferlooked up her ticket on the internet andreplayed the video of her incident. As sheapproached the intersection and the redlight, she dutifully looked left and saw nocars coming. As we often do, without fur-ther thinking, she made a “California
Stop”. This is when a driver coasts
around the corner on a right-on-redwithout coming to a full stop.
The lady watched intently as thetape played and then, she gasped.
Unknown to her, just as she was round-ing the corner, a pedestrian stepped off thecorner almost directly into her path. The
pedestrian quickly jumped back, but the lady never knew how closeshe had come to hitting the person.
Shaken, she thanked the staffand asked for directions to the
cashier’s office. In the past 2 years, the Miami Gardens
Red Light Camera Program has cut acci-dents at the camera intersection by
83%. This is a staggering number. This means almost 200 fewer acci-
dents. It means that there are 200 familieswhere no one was killed or maimed, or atthe very least, had to deal with all of theconsequences of car insurance and repair.
No one likes to get a ticket, but it is asmall price to pay for protecting yourselfand your family. The law has alwaysrequired a stop on red. We all know that, whether it’s a straight run-through or aright on red, RED MEANS STOP. For a
right turn on red it means STOP, look tothe left, to the right and back to the left.
It’s a law we can LIVE with!

Swales around the City are strips of landusually located in front of a house betweenthe sidewalk and the street. Swales playan important role in the protection of ourenvironment and the beauty of our City.
First, they are an area for naturaldrainage for stormwater that falls onstreets, sidewalks, and driveway approach-es. Swales allow the stormwater to drainand percolate back to the ground for ourdrinking water. Second, they protect ourenvironment by filtering the stormwaterfrom the street, picks up the oils, pesticidesand lawn fertilizers that wash away fromthe property. The swales along with natu-rally filter out and reduce these pollutants, decreasing their loading on groundwaterresources. If not treated by the swales, these pollutants would eventually end upin our canals, lakes, ocean and our drink-ing water.
Swales should be kept grassy, not justfor beauty, but to catch these contami-nants. Swales paved with asphalt or builtup with dirt or gravel can cause health, environmental, and aesthetic hazards. It isagainst the Public Works Manual to haveanything on the swale other than grass.Stormwater can collect and stagnate ormay run off the paved surface, picking upleaves, litter, animal waste, oil, etc., thatwill runoff to other areas to include flood-ing your neighbors.
Property owners are required to main-tain the swales adjacent to their property ingood condition {City Code: PropertyMaintenance: Chapter 16, article #3,Section # 16-57 (e, h)} helping us to pro-tect our canals and waterways. To ensurethe swale areas stay in good condition,
simply follow a few basic guidelines:
• Keep your Swale free of leaves, limbs and any other debris. Dispose ofdebris and oil properly, instead of placingthem in your swale. Call Miami DadeCounty Solid Waste before your bulk trashis brought out to the swale for pickup. Thiswill eliminate the grass from dying andkeep the swale open if a storm approaches.
• Avoid parking vehicles on theswale. This will allow the grass to growhealthy and keep the soil loose so watercan filter and soak into the ground moreeasily. On a side note, if you have to parkon the swale please do not park on top ofthe sidewalks.
• Do not place asphalt, gravel, dirtor any material other than grass in sawles,to allow the water drain into the ground.
Landscaping your swale area can bepleasing to the eye, but it also disrupts thenatural drainage qualities of the swale.Consider landscaping behind your proper-ty line; you will still add beauty to yourhome while keeping the swale in its natu-ral state. The City continues to plant treesin the swale area, not just to beautify andprovide oxygen, but trees reduce waterrunoff by breaking rainfall thus allowingthe water to flow down the trunk and intothe earth below the tree. When mulched, trees act like a sponge that filters this waternaturally and uses it to recharge ground-water supplies.
All landscaping within the swale areasshall be in accordance with establishedprocedures approved by the city to includeno plants or trees that are prickly to thetouch and planting trees/bushes thatobstruct visibility on intersections anddriveways.
A Message from your Public Works Director:Swales as an Environmental Benefit

Almost all of us will face chronic illnessat some point during our lives. Our bodiesare not perfect, and as we age, we are like-ly to get chronic diseases like high bloodpressure, diabetes, and cancer.Fortunately, what we call environmentalfactors play a major role in whether we getthese illnesses. Being physically activeand maintaining a proper diet serves as ourbest protection against chronic diseases.Although this information may not be newto you, this article will hopefully provideyou with some helpful exercise and nutri-tion tips.
‘Exercise.’ According to the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine, being activehelps to prevent a long list of diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and certain typesof cancer. Exercise also helps to relievestress and improve wellness. Which typeof physical activity is best, and how muchis necessary to improve health, is a topic ofdebate within the medical community. However, try to find a physical activitythat works for you. Exercising is easier tomaintain if you enjoy the activity. Somepeople prefer to play sports such as basket-ball or soccer, while others are more com-fortable running or biking. What’s impor-tant is this: some exercise is better thannone. Even adding a short walk to yourdaily routine can improve your health andwellbeing.
‘Diet.’ Proper ‘diet’ refers to thelifestyle changes that a person makes inorder to get healthier. Eating good foodsnot only helps prevents chronic diseases, but it also decreases stress on the body –this leads to higher feelings of overallenergy and wellness. Below is a simplelist of nutritional recommendations. The
list may seem long, but following even acouple of these suggestions will make youfeel better!
• Eat 3 to 7 servings per day ofvegetables, especially green and leafy veg-gies
• Eat 3-5 servings of fruit per day• Eat at least 2-3 servings of pro-
tein every day, preferably fish (not fried)• Eat whole grains instead of
processed grains• Limit intake of dairy/milk prod-
ucts to 0-3 servings per day• Get at least two teaspoons of
‘good’ oils (monounsaturated – likeflaxseed or olive)
• Eat very small amounts (maxi-mum of 75 calories) of processed or sug-ary foods
• Take an appropriate multivitamin(ask your doctor or pharmacist which oneis best for you)
These are general recommenda-tions, and this information may apply dif-ferently to different people. Please seeyour doctor before doing any new exercis-es or changing your diet – this will helpyou make sure that the changes you wantto make are safe for you.

Did you know that today, almost one inthree children in America are overweightor obese? The numbers are even higher inAfrican American and Hispanic communi-ties, where almost 40% of the children areoverweight or obese. To help combatthese statistics, the City of Miami Gardensand Mayor Shirley Gibson have partneredwith First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’sMove! campaign. The partnership, through Resolution 201-012-1405 initiatedby Mayor Gibson, is dedicated to solvingthe challenge of childhood obesity withina generation, resulting in future genera-tions of children healthy enough to pursuetheir goals.
This yearlong commitment waslaunched on January 15, 2011 during theFamily Fun and Fitness Festival. This freeevent at the Betty T. FergusonRecreational Complex promoted healthand wellness and featured the first annualMayor’s 5K Walk/Run Fitness Challenge, farmer’s market, health screenings, healthy cooking and exercise demonstra-tions. Additionally, the HealthEmpowerment Series was offered monthlyat the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational
Complex to discuss various health topicsincluding heart, back, and lung health aswell as diabetes and stress management.
The Parks and Recreation Departmentfurther included children in this initiative,by enhancing its health and exercise com-ponents of the Shining Stars After-Schoolprogram.
