Living in south Florida we are exposed to intense sunshine year round. To help prevent both skin aging and skin cancers, it is especially important to use good sun
protection every day. When choosing a sunscreen, look for one with an SPF of at least 30 with both UVA and UVB protection. The UVB are the “burning” rays, while the UVA are the “aging” rays which damage the DNA and create the wrinkles. UVA rays can penetrate glass, so while in your car you are still being exposed to these harmful rays. It is best to get a sun block with micro-pulverized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide since these act as a physical barrier block against both the UVA and UVB rays.

Nutrition, exercise, vitamins, supplements – these are just a few of the tools that we use to keep ourselves healthy and youthful, yet most of us forget about the most important part of our body, our brain. For years, scientists, medical doctors, psychologists and researchers have been emphasizing the mind-body connection. Diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes have been clearly linked to our emotional well-being and the way we cognitively handle stress. It is now clear that a balanced, harmonious brain leads to better mental clarity, enhanced emotional function, optimal physical performance and improved overall health.
Well, here’s the exciting news: with today’s advanced technology direct brain training is now a reality and it’s called Neurofeedback! Neurofeedback is based on two principles: that
the brain’s electrical activity reflects mental states and that this activity can be
trained. With the help of an electroencephalogram (eeg), sensors placed on the scalp pick up brainwaves which are fed back via an audio/visual display that you can learn to control. This allows the brain to be “exercised” and, thus, enhances overall brain function.
Neurofeedback has served as treatment for a variety of brain
disorders (i.e. migraines, sleep disorders, seizures, attention
deficit, panic attacks and other anxiety-based disorders). However, beyond that, it has also served to enhance mental agility and physical performance and is now being used by NASA, the Air Force and athletes around the world for peak performance training. This past
year, the Canadian freestyle skiing team signed on for bio/neurofeedback training. Perhaps it is not a mystery that Canada
was the No. 1 gold medal winner of the 2010 Winter Olympics. In 2006, the Italian soccer team received bio/neurofeedback training and, subsequently, won the World Cup.
Neurofeedback training is now readily available via local neurologists, psychologists and clinicians. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and train that brain!

As people age, they frequently develop loose neck skin and fatty deposits under
the chin. Occasionally, this unattractive neck skin condition can develop as early as when people reach their 20s! There is now a new laser assisted liposuction device available to help eliminate the neck fat and tighten the neck skin at the same time. This new laser procedure often eliminates the need for an excision behind the ear to remove excess skin. The laser used for
this revolutionary technique is called the SlimLipo. The SlimLip laser probe is introduced into the neck through a tiny incision with only local anesthesia. The neck fat is then liquefied with the laser, and subsequently removed via liposuction. The laser is then reintroduced into the neck area to help tighten the skin. This new technique will help to create a sharper, younger looking jaw line and neck, with minimal downtime.

Some of the tips we share with new and prospective members are:
Set aside at least one day a month to “invest” in your MDGLCC membership (i.e. attend a networker, write an article for Clarity, create an ad for PluggedIN and/or, reach-out directly to other members you believe will bring business opportunities to your door.
Ask to be introduced! As a new member, create a target list of other members you desire to meet. Build a timeline and, create an expectation that the new relationship will be valuable to you both.
Make the market aware of your goods/services – MDGLCC has many outreach products for you to make a positive first impact. The office is happy to work with you on an approach. Better yet, reach out to one of our advertising/PR partners for assistance.
Happy Networking!

Giancarla Bodoni has quietly led the way in exposing and supporting the South Florida organic farming community, earning numerous accolades, among them one of “The Top Ten Most Important Miami Restaurants of the Decade” (2000 – 2010). In an ever-deepening understanding of our relationship with food and the planet, Giancarla freely explores more radical nutritional practices of vegetarianism, veganism and even “raw food” on her contemporary Italian menu. With vision, commitment and an artistic perspective, she is one of the most respected chefs in South Florida.
Giancarla’s attention has expanded to the ocean. This comes about through her daily interaction with the sea’s food. The responsible sourcing of fish dictates sustainable fishing practices in the wild. In preparing her share of the “catch”, Chef Bodoni has seen the direct effects of pollution evident in the wild animals – and is responding. With energy and awareness, Escopazzo teams up with a fledgling foundation dedicated
to educating children who live on the world’s coasts, creating a personal and experiential connection with the impact of our behavior. The Big Blue & You Foundation and Escopazzo

We are all well aware that Miami real estate has gone through a rough patch. But is it still drowning and can it be revived sooner rather than later? The good news is that sales contracts of both home and condos are up 53% compared to the previous year. Low prices, bulk sales, and foreign buyers have helped to spur the market. The prices of single-family homes are up slightly. Condo prices have continued to decrease, but luxury sales are spiraling up. Miami’s real estate is still very desirable and should become healthier in the near future.

Account Types: Everyone should start with an ordinary savings account where you maintain enough cash to cover both anticipated and unanticipated needs. Three to six months of living expenses is a reasonable target.
The second step is to review your retirement plan at work. Many advisors recommend that you only contribute as much as is necessary to qualify for matching contributions (free money) if your employer offers this benefit. That’s because most of these plans lack liquidity, charge high management fees and are taxed at high ordinary income tax rates when you cash
out during your retirement years.
The next place to park your investment dollars is a Roth IRA if you qualify or a traditional IRA if you don’t. Roth IRAs grow tax-free (as opposed to tax-deferred). Beginning in 2010, traditional IRAs can be converted to Roth IRAs regardless of your income level. Roth IRAs are the greatest gift Congress ever gave to taxpayers. Don’t pass them up!
Amounts saved and invested beyond your savings account, retirement plan at work, and your IRA should be directed to a regular brokerage account. These offer greater liquidity and certain tax benefits when compared
to most retirement accounts. Qualified dividends and capital gains in these accounts are taxed at lower long term capital gains tax rates, often more than offsetting the tax deferral benefit offered by most retirement plans
Investment Choices: Diversify your investments in these accounts with a broad mix of mutual funds, index funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Be sure to include a wide variety of asset classes. Include domestic and foreign stocks, bonds and real estate, as well as other asset classes such as commodities (like oil, food, basic materials and gold). The real estate and commodity categories offer protection from the silent thief of inflation by preserving purchasing power even when the government prints too much money.
How much to invest in each asset class is highly subjective with no two people holding the same opinion. Just be sure to include a meaningful percentage in each asset class to obtain the full risk-reducing benefit of diversification. You
can accomplish this by purchasing a wide variety of low cost and tax efficient index funds or ETFs. Avoid traditional mutual funds with sales loads, high management fees and unexpected tax consequences caused by frequent trading and investment turnover within the funds. Websites like morningstar.com can help you avoid these traps. Seek out professionals who adhere to a fiduciary standard and are legally required to put your interests first. Ask your advisor for full disclosure on how he or she is compensated. Avoid those whose compensation is contingent on the sale of overly complicated and expensive insurance products, annuities or proprietary mutual funds. For more information on how to find a fiduciary advisor, visit napfa.org.

MDGLCC is the largest not-for-profit corporation in the county for gay and lesbian businesses. With membership on the rise, the Chamber’s mission is to promote a unified and thriving LGBT and LGBT-friendly business and professional community throughout the County. The Chamber’s goals are to promote networking within the existing gay and gay-friendly business and professional community; to promote business opportunities for Chamber members; to promote Miami and Miami Beach as a year-round, gay and gay-friendly tourist destinations; to provide resources for our members; and to provide outreach from our community to other organizations.
about the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian chamber of commerce
As a community chamber (versus a civic chamber), we encourage both our gay and gay-friendly family to support those who support us. One of the benefits of membership in MDGLCC is the knowledge that a $6 billion local LGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services. With a list of over 400 companies comprising our membership, more likely than not you will find what you are looking for.
As corporate America looks to diversify its revenue stream, the LGBT market is increasingly being looked to for growth. The best way we can make the greatest impact is to speak with our pocketbooks and use Chamber Members whenever possible. So, think SOMA and Support Our Members Always!
