Citizenship Matters at Alonso and Tracy Mourning Senior High.

• Talk to the students about the importance of charitable work and serving others. Point out that such work is important when living in a civil and democratic society. Have the class identify needs in the school or community, and plan a service project to meet those needs. For guidance in planning a service project, visit www.goodcharacter.com and click on “service learning.”

• Have students bring in online articles or newspaper articles about local people who have performed acts of courage or service to the community. Talk with students about what the people did and why they are considered “heroes”. Have students share thoughts on what made that person a good citizen.

• Write this quote on the board and discuss what it means: “You are on the pathway to a successful life when you do more for your community than your community does for you.”-Unknown. Then pass out strips of paper and have students write their own citizenship quote. Glue all the quotes on a poster board and display them in the classroom.

• Cut strips of paper and pass one out to each student. Have them each draw or write a good citizen action on their strip of paper. Staple the links together to form a “citizen chain” to display in the classroom. Explain that in a community we are all connected and must work together to make it a great place to live.

• Have students brainstorm people they know who are model citizens and write about them. Students can create model citizen awards out of construction paper and include their narrative on the deserving individual. Create a model citizenship wall of fame.

• Have students create original pledges and choose the best one to use as the class or school pledge .

• Have students Make a Promise to Serve Their School and Community using the Handshake handout. They will write their name on one hand and the club/cause/organization they promise to serve (submitted by Alonso and Tracy Mourning Senior High).

You can help save resources by practicing the 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Reduce: Precycle - 1/3 of all garbage is packaging - buy products with minimal or recycled packaging; say no to a bag when purchasing a small item. Reuse: Many things can be reused before throwing them out. Recycling: Take the National Recycling Coalition's Recycling pledge: - I pledge to find out what materials I can and cannot recycle in my community. - I pledge to lead by example in my neighborhood by recycling. - I pledge to recycle batteries, cell phones and other electronic waste. - I pledge to email my elected officials to ask them to increase funding for my community's recycling programs. - I pledge to tell five friends that recycling is the easiest thing they can do to slow global warming. Recycling Day, on November 15, is an important opportunity to educate people about the importance of global citizenship. Recycling for our environment is a way each of us can make a difference for a better world. On the Earth 911 site (http://earth911.org/recycling/) you can locate the nearest recycling center for disposing of items like paint and batteries.

Taking the Tolerance Pledge is a way that each of us can help to make every day Tolerance Day. "I pledge to have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, culture, race, sexual identity or other characteristics that are different from my own."
