Thank you to all of our parents who made it to our Volunteer Meeting. We had a great turnout! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents in making Spanish Schoolhouse the best school it can be. The children LOVE having their parents help, and we do too! Our October theme is “My Community.” This month, we will learn about the people and places in our community, with a special focus on community helpers.
Diving into our cultural theme, we will learn about some unique community helpers in Latin America, like bakers (los panaderos), ice cream vendors (los paleteros), and shoemakers (los zapateros). We’ll also discuss methods of communication and transportation. Finally, we’ll wrap up the month by learning about the seasons, especially Fall. We are excited to have some special visits coming up from helpers right here in our own community!
We’ll also continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month!

Spanish is one of the world's most phonetic
languages. If you know how a word is spelled, you
can almost always know how it is pronounced
(although the reverse isn't true). The main
exception is recent words of foreign origin, which
usually retain their original spelling.
The vowel system in Spanish is quite simple and
straight forward. The 5 vowels: A, E, I, O and U
always represent the same sounds, with very few
exceptions, unlike English!!
We have teachers from all of the
countries listed below. Which country
do you think has the most
representation on our staff?
Colombia
Mexico
Argentina
El Salvador
Venezuela
Costa Rica
USA

Arroz con leche
me quiero casar,
con una señorita
de este lugar.
Que sepa coser,
que sepa bordar
que sepa abrir la puerta
para ir a jugar.
Con ésta sí, con ésta no,
con esta señorita me caso yo.
Uno, dos y tres, cuatro, cinco, seis,
siete, ocho, nueve y diez. Uno, dos y tres,
cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve y diez.
El uno es un palito. El dos es un patito El tres un gusanito. El cuatro un
garabato. El cinco pega un brinco. El seis es un
ganchito. El siete es un piquete. El ocho es un
bizcocho. El nueve una culebra, para espantar el
diez.

Rice with milk I want to get married
With a girl
From this place
Who knows how to sew
Who knows how to embroider
Who knows how to open the door
To go out and play.
With this one yes, with this one no,
With this young lady I will get married.
One, two and three, Four, five and six,
Seven, eight, nine and ten. One, two and three, Four, five and six,
Seven, eight, nine and ten. The one is a stick. The two is a duckling.
The three, a little worm. The four, a scribble.
The five gives a jump. The six is a little hook.
The seven is a pinch. The eight is a sponge cake.
The nine, a snake, that scares the ten.

MISS SANDRA’S ENGLISH NEWS
Letters of the Month: H, C, O, P, & J.
Books: Christopher Columbus, Opposites, Pumpkin Patch, Dora’s Perfect Pumpkin
Songs: Shake my sillies out, If you’re happy & you know it, Let everyone clap their hands,
and the October song for our calendar.
October is such a busy and exciting month full of wonderful events!
Our English class will start out with the letter "H" focusing on heroes and our community
helpers. While learning the letter "C" we will also discover what Columbus and his three
ships were all about. The letters "O", "P", and "J" will follow. We will compliment these
letters with songs, poems, books and a fun activity about October. Please be sure to ask
your child to recite one to you! They get so excited to share what they have learned with
you. Happy Fall!

A Few Reminders
Bring your decorated pumpkin for
The “Pumpkin Patch” Monday & Tuesday
October 24 & 25
Each year we invite students to decorate their
own pumpkin and bring it to school. The
decorating is up to you: students can paint their
pumpkin, glue things on it, attach stickers, etc.
We place all the decorated pumpkins in the lawn
by the school to create our very own “pumpkin
patch.” Please bring your decorated pumpkin to
school on Monday or Tuesday, October 24 or 25.

Dentro de la Clase/Inside the Classroom
One of the most important learning experiences at Spanish Schoolhouse is Circle Time. This is a group
activity where we work on developing many important skills, like listening, taking turns, expressing
ourselves, managing our bodies, and asking/answering questions.
Because attention span increases with age, the younger students’ Circle Time focuses on engaging activities
like songs and fingerplays that teach colors, shapes, body parts, days of the week, family members, and
more. Little ones love to move to the music, repeat the common phrases, and follow along with hand
motions. Circle Time also includes conversations about our monthly and weekly themes which help build
vocabulary.
In our three, four, and Kinder classes, Circle Time incorporates calendar concepts. “Days of the week” and
“months of the year” songs, counting by ones and tens, and predicting what comes next are just a few of the
calendar activities. Themes are discussed during Circle Time, and new vocabulary is introduced and
repeated. Often, a story is incorporated which reflects the theme. Children are encouraged to answer
questions about the story, predict what will happen next, and even act out the parts of the characters.
Circle Time lays the foundation of learning and is one of the most enjoyable times of the day. Children get
the most out of it if they are relaxed and ready to focus, so it helps if they arrive at school on time with a few
minutes to transition from home to the classroom. If you’d like to learn more, we hope you will join us for
scheduled Open House times later this year, where you can observe your child’s Circle Time in action!
