September 2015 MHS Newsletter L.E.A.D From The Front Principal’s Message Welcome to Our School Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! The MHS staff has been working with Barbara Coloroso, author of the bully, the bullied and the not so inno- cent bystander, over the past few months, and she has given us some strate- gies to help us respond to behavior that is detrimental to a positive learning environment. Messages such as “no more, not here, not ever” and “I be- lieve in you, I trust you, I know that you can handle it” will be prevalent as we deal with kids and the issues they bring to the staff. The administration at MHS began to use restorative justice practices a couple of years ago but will refine those to include restitution, resolution and reconciliation. Mon- trose High School is a positive and encouraging place to work and learn, but we can be better! MHS, partnering with Columbine Middle School, will also pilot a new App, “Sprigeo,” to report bullying, threats, weapons, or any other concerns directly to administration. This will get information in the hands of school administrators faster to better serve the needs of our students and staff. The “Sprigeo” reporting system provides students with an avenue for complete confidential reporting, to include complete ano- nymity. We have also added an online and app-based planner myhome- workapp.com (or students can download the app for their Apple or Andriod devices). Students can track homework assignments, receive updates from teachers, and access the Student Handbook on this new resource. Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any concerns you might have. (I love to hear about things we are doing well also!) Principal’s Message

Welcome to Our School Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! The MHS staff has been working

with Barbara Coloroso, author of the bully, the bullied and the not so inno-

cent bystander, over the past few months, and she has given us some strate-

gies to help us respond to behavior that is detrimental to a positive learning

environment. Messages such as “no more, not here, not ever” and “I be-

lieve in you, I trust you, I know that you can handle it” will be prevalent as

we deal with kids and the issues they bring to the staff. The administration

at MHS began to use restorative justice practices a couple of years ago but

will refine those to include restitution, resolution and reconciliation. Mon-

trose High School is a positive and encouraging place to work and learn,

but we can be better! MHS, partnering with Columbine Middle School,

will also pilot a new App, “Sprigeo,” to report bullying, threats, weapons,

or any other concerns directly to administration. This will get information

in the hands of school administrators faster to better serve the needs of our

students and staff. The “Sprigeo” reporting system provides students with

an avenue for complete confidential reporting, to include complete ano-

nymity. We have also added an online and app-based planner — myhome-

workapp.com (or students can download the app for their Apple or Andriod

devices). Students can track homework assignments, receive updates from

teachers, and access the Student Handbook on this new resource. Please do

not hesitate to contact my office with any concerns you might have. (I love

to hear about things we are doing well also!) I am looking forward to work-

ing with parents, students and community members to make this the best

school year possible.

Susan Smith

SPED Paraprofessional I have lived in Montrose for two years moving here from Grand

Junction. My husband Glenn and I have been married for 4 1/2

years and although we have no children living at home we do

have 4 fur babies that keep us on our toes. I have been enrolled at

Grand Canyon University for a year now working towards my

degree in Elementary Education. I have the most colorful resume

around from being a professional clown to working for Santa

Claus and the Easter Bunny!

I am one of two new English Language Learners teachers at the high school. I

have taught students from the age of 5-75. It is a lot of fun especially since

they teach me as much as I teach them! Outside school my husband and four

year old son keep me on the move.

Science

I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Colorado Mesa Uni-

versity. I will receive a Master’s of Arts in Education in December of

2015 from CMU. I am new to Montrose this year. This is my first year

teaching science at the high school level. I enjoys being outdoors with my

dog, Navi. If you’re interested in field research, let me know. I am par-

ticipated in species diversity studies of both insects and ocean plankton.

New Staff Welcome

My name is Kevin McDougall and I am the new social studies

teacher for Montrose High School. I moved to Montrose from

Cheyenne, Wyoming after living there for the past 13 years. I am

a proud graduate of the University of Wyoming – Go Pokes! If

you come to my room, you will be sure to find UW brown and

gold. I recently married my beautiful wife Amanda and we are

very excited to start our lives together in Montrose. We are both

avid campers, 4-wheelers, and hikers, so we will certainly take

advantage of all that this area has to offer. I am eager to begin

Kevin McDougall

Social Studies

I'm joining the Montrose staff after spending 13 years teaching high

school math in the Front Range area. I've taught everything from pre-

algebra to AP Calculus and love it all. I was a computer engineer for 21

years before I changed careers to become a teacher. I grew up in a small

town in eastern Nebraska and am very happy to leave the congestion of

the Front Range behind me. I love to fish and play golf and to snowshoe

in the winter. I also play bass guitar in a classic rock band. We mostly

play cover songs but are in the final stages of recording a CD of original

music. I didn't start playing the bass until age 49 and it was the first in-

strument I ever played in my life, proving that learning truly can be a life-

long adventure.

Hi! I'm Ryan Magee, and I'm excited to being working with

freshmen and sophomores in English class this coming year.

I grew up in Minnesota, spent the last six years in New Mex-

ico, and am looking forward to exploring western Colorado

and getting involved in the Montrose community.

New Staff Welcome

I grew up in San Diego, California and the upper pen-

insula of Michigan. After graduating from Humboldt

State University in northern California with my

bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, I worked as an

ornithologist for various organizations. This led me to

Colorado in 2000. I worked for a research and out-

reach organization as a biologist and outdoor educa-

tor. This job inspired me to become a science teacher,

where I could apply the knowledge and enthusiasm I

gained from the outdoors into the science classroom. I

began teaching in 2005, and for the last eight years I

taught science at Columbine Middle School. My hus-

band and I have two wonderful little girls aged 4

years and 6 years old. I am excited to be at Montrose

High School.

Hello! My name is Tammy Couturier. I am teaching Math 1 in Room

211. My husband and I moved to Ridgway from Phoenix, Arizona in

January 2001 and then to Montrose in 2004. We have a son, Vance,

who is 10 and in the 5th grade. I am looking forward to working with

everyone this school year in helping our children succeed!

New Staff Welcome

As a new member of both the community and the school, I am

thrilled to become acquainted with the students, families and com-

munity members of Montrose. A little bit about my background: I

grew up in a tiny rural community on the Eastern plains of Colo-

rado – a cattle ranch near the small town of Rush. After graduat-

ing from a small public high school (there were 5 people in my

graduating class!), I went on to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Mu-

sic Education with an emphasis in Piano from John Brown Uni-

versity in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. I enjoyed living in Northwest

Arkansas but always hoped to return to Colorado after graduation.

A few random things I enjoy: coffee, hiking & camping, volley-

ball, basketball, any good action movie, meeting new people, des-

serts, and live music -- I am truly excited about jumping into this

new position here at Montrose High School!
