CINCINNATI, OHIO — TKF’s zoned ac-cumulation conveyor with roll to rollchain driven live rollers (CDLR), is de-signed to handle medium to heavy dutyloads. The zone lengths can be designedto coincide with the product lengths. The entire conveyor length is then driv-en by a single power unit. Each accu-mulation zone is driven by air operatedclutches that are controlled by photoeyes and solenoids located in each zone. While sensor rollers are available, theall electric sensing eliminates the wearand tear of a sensor roller. The singledrive configuration requires less powerthan multi-drive systems and producesa clean, low maintenance system.

TKF’s accumulation conveyor is alsodesigned with each clutch assemblymounted on the side frame of the convey-or, instead of underneath. This creates avery low profile that positions the top of

each roller as low as 6-inches off thefloor, making it ideal for heavy loads andpallet conveying. It also provides a veryaccessible location for moving parts, which makes maintenance very easy.

Roller diameters are available in di-ameters of 1.9, 2.5 and 3.5-inches andwidths up to 60-inches. Weight loads upto 6,000-pounds are typical.

TKF designs, builds and installs con-veying systems. The company’s servicesrange from systems integration, initialengineering concepts and final design,to manufacturing and installation.TKF’s manufactured products includereciprocating and continuous verticalconveyors, PosiGrip conveyor, overhead, monorail and power and free conveyor, popup transfer, accumulation, curve, roller and a variety of custom engi-neered conveyor and material handlingsystems.

Mobile computers have revolutionizedwarehouse and logistics operations byallowing employees to automaticallycollect data at the point of activity, ac-cess warehouse management applica-tions and transmit tracking and inven-tory data in real time. But the benefitsof mobile computing improved accura-cy, efficiency and productivity are onlypossible if workers are able to operatetheir mobile devices for a full shift with-out interruption. If the battery in thedevice can’t maintain a charge, produc-tivity will suffer.

Batteries are a an unglamorouscomponent in a mobile computing so-lution, and most end users don’t thinkabout them unless there is some kindof a problem: they fail to charge, thecharge doesn’t last the length of ashift, or the batteries require frequent(and costly) replacement. End usersshould think carefully about their bat-tery management strategy during theearly stages of a mobile computing de-ployment. Batteries for these ruggeddevices don’t last forever, but theyshould allow mobile employees towork throughout the length of a typi-cal shift and withstand enough charg-ing cycles to provide at least a year ofservice before needing replaced.

By selecting the right battery for theapplication, storing and charging themproperly and implementing smart powermanagement strategies at the device lev-el, users can maximize the life of theirmobile device batteries, boost productiv-ity and save money in the process.

The life of a battery

Rechargeable batteries for mobile de-vices have gone through a significantevolution over the past several years. Inthe past, most devices used Nickel Cad-mium (NiCad) batteries. NiCad batterieswere relatively costly and sometimessuffered from what was known as the“memory effect” which could result inreduced charge capacity if the batterieswere overcharged.

NiCad batteries have largely givenway to Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) andLithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. NiMHbatteries are a lower cost alternativethat are often used in high drain de-vices. Li-ion batteries, on the otherhand, have an excellent energy toweight ratio, making them a goodchoice for mobile devices. They alsohave a relatively low self-discharge ratecompared to other battery types. Li-ionbatteries have fast become the stan-dard in most mobile computers anddata collection devices.

While batteries have evolved to offerhigher capacities in smaller form fac-tors, the devices they power continue toadd new features and functions that in-crease their overall energy footprint. Barcode scanners, color displays, cameras, wireless communications and other pe-ripherals all put a strain on the battery,as do the general operation of the CPU,memory and hard drive motor.

A typical battery for a handheld com-puter or bar code scanner can last fora full shift (8-12 hours) in most appli-cations, but this is highly dependenton a number of factors, including theuse of wireless communications. Bat-

teries are also available in a variety ofsizes and capacities, and end usersshould evaluate their application re-quirements to determine if they need astandard or high capacity battery fortheir mobile computers.

Mobile computer manufacturers pro-vide general guidance on the life of thestandard batteries that come with theirdevices, but end users should evaluatetheir power requirements within thecontext of their own unique application. How the computers will be used andwhat capabilities will be required duringa shift, will impact the type of battery se-lected and the frequency of recharging.

By evaluating the requirements of theapplication, it’s easy to determine if youwill need a higher capacity battery. Forbatch applications that don’t involvereal time, wireless communication, alower capacity battery can usually han-dle a full shift while reducing the cost ofthe mobile device. Applications involv-ing wireless communication, though, will almost always require a high capac-ity battery.

The capacity of a battery is measuredin milliAmpere hours (mAh) and volt-age; while these numbers are useful, they can be confusing for some endusers, and the differences in thesenumbers among different batteries canmake them difficult to compare. ThemAh figure is a unit of electrical charge, and represents the amount of power thebattery can store; the larger the num-ber, the more power it can hold. Watthours can also be a useful comparison. You can measure watt hours by multi-

plying the milliAmpere hour rating bythe voltage. Most suppliers offer a rangeof batteries. Datalogic, for example, pro-vides batteries for its devices that rangefrom 1000 mAh to 5000 mAh ratings, depending on the device and hardwareoptions available for the device.

Other elements to consider: Howquickly can the battery be recharged? Will data be lost if the device loses pow-er before the battery can be changed? Can the batteries be “hot swapped”while the computer is still operating? What is the maximum number of timesthe battery can be recharged?

Extending the life of a batteryGenerally speaking, the batteries

used for rugged mobile devices in highuse environments should be replacedeach year to ensure device perform-ance. That’s because even the best bat-teries will degrade over time, losing asmuch as 30 percent of their capacity inthe course of a year, depending on thenumber of recharging cycles they’vegone through. But even though batter-ies will lose capacity over time, there arestill strategies that end users can em-ploy to make sure they get the most outof their batteries. By properly maintain-ing and storing your batteries, and ad-justing device settings to maximize thetime between charges, you can makesure that your batteries last a full shiftand can be utilized for 12 months ormore before replacement.

Maximize battery life in warehouse operations

Maximize 5

peratures, excessive heat can harm thebatteries and reduce their useful life. Soif your mobile computers or spare bat-teries are to be stored for any length oftime, make sure the storage environ-ment will not expose the equipment toextreme temperatures. Typically, Li-ionbatteries can be stored in areas that arebetween 32 and 104 degrees Fahren-heit, but lower temperature storage outof direct sunlight is best. Ideally, storethe batteries in a cooler place, with acharge of about 40 percent of capacity.

Take advantage of power managementtools: Do your new mobile devices comeequipped with power management capa-bilities to help reduce battery consump-tion? Power management software al-lows users to create power saving pro-files for both work and idle hours, andmay include settings so that users candetermine when a display will dim if thecomputer has not been used after a cer-tain period of time, or to power down thecomputer after a lengthy period of beingidle. May of these settings can be manu-ally adjusted, but power managementtools can make it easier to create a de-vice profile that maximizes battery life.

For example, Datalogic offers powermanagement tools in its mobile comput-ers that offer a sleep/off mode with pro-grammable timeout, as well as settingsthat can adjust the power output inboth idle and operating modes. Thesedevices also have a low battery indicatorso that workers have plenty of time toswap out batteries before they are com-pletely discharged. Turn down the(back) lights: One easy way to improvebattery performance is to reduce the

drain the backlight places on the powersource. Most mobile devices allow usersto control the brightness on the display,as well as the amount of time that pass-es before the backlight dims when thedevice is idle. Adjusting these settingscan improve battery performance, buthow much flexibility you have in alter-ing the backlight will be determined bythe lighting conditions in which employ-ees have to work.

Turn down the volume: A less obviousstrategy is to simply turn down the vol-ume on the device. Mobile computersoften utilize audible tones to indicate anerror, or a successful bar code scan. Byreducing the volume, users can de-crease the time between charges by asmuch as 36 percent.

Adjust wireless LAN settings: Forwarehouse management applicationsthat rely on real-time communications, mobile computers communicate withbackend enterprise solutions via a wire-less LAN; depending on the network cov-erage and device settings, the process ofconnecting with a wireless LAN accesspoint and then authenticating the mo-bile device can rapidly deplete the bat-tery in your handheld computer.

If a wireless device is left in a con-stant “on” state, perpetually broad-casting a signal to the network evenwhen no data is being transmitted, batteries can be drained in as little astwo or three hours. Wireless LAN mod-ules typically include power manage-ment tools that allow users to config-ure the device in a “power saver” mode.Typically, a device can be set to use alower power signal in areas of dense

wireless coverage and a higher fieldstrength where coverage is weak. Net-work security settings can also impactbattery life. Requiring a wireless LANmodule to go through a full reauthen-tication when a user moves from oneWLAN access point to another can in-crease power usage, for example.

The WiFi Alliance, the nonprofit in-dustry association that manages andpromotes standards related to wirelessLAN products, introduced WMM PowerSave to help manage battery power inmobile devices. Power Save works by al-lowing client devices to “doze” betweendata packets, while the access pointsbuffer downlink frames. According tothe Alliance, Power Save can improvebattery performance by 15 to 40 per-cent, depending on the application. However, using WLAN power manage-ment tools can negatively impact datathroughput in some scenarios. Carefultesting should be conducted before de-ployment to determine the impact ofvarious power controls on both batterylife and transmission speeds.

Even companies that aren’t currentlyusing a wireless LAN should take a lookat their radio settings. If you are using adevice with WLAN capabilities, eventhough you aren’t taking advantage ofthem right now, make sure the radio isturned off — otherwise, the radios couldquickly deplete your batteries whilesearching for wireless signals thataren’t there.

Monitor battery lifeEventually, even with best practices

in place for battery management, thebatteries in your mobile devices willneed to be replaced. Most of the batter-ies available for rugged mobile comput-ers are good for approximately 500recharging cycles before they begin tosignificantly lose capacity. Some batterychargers include built-in battery condi-tion monitoring tools so that you canquickly see if a battery has lost any ofits recharge capacity. Once a batteryloses half or more of its capacity, itshould be replaced. Otherwise, workerswill waste a significant amount of timeswapping out batteries midshift. Workwith your mobile device supplier or inte-grator to establish the best process forordering new batteries and disposing ofor recycling the old ones.

ConclusionBatteries play a key role in the suc-

cess of any mobile deployment. If thebatteries in your mobile devices can’tlast a full shift, employees will have tostop working to retrieve and replacetheir batteries, which can create a sig-nificant drain on productivity. If batter-ies die while the device is in use, youcould also lose valuable operationaldata in the process.

By selecting batteries with enough ca-pacity to handle your warehouse appli-cations and instituting a power man-agement strategy that includes theproper storage of your batteries, as wellas adjusting the device settings to max-imize battery life, you can ensure thatyour mobile computers can provide afull shift’s worth of benefits.

Organization and labeling of materialand locations in a warehouse is a vitalfunction. The ultimate goal is to knowwhere everything is — all of the time. That’s not always possible when labeldesignations change or when human er-ror is present. Clear plastic insertablelabel holders, with printable laser in-serts are the most versatile solution foran efficient warehouse.

The “original” clear plastic insertablelabel holder was derived from C.R.Chamberlain’s 1950 patent for“HOL_DEX®.” This first insertable La-bel Holder was intended for file draw-ers and loose leaf binders. To changedesignation simply remark the insertand slip it into the holder. C.R. Cham-berlain, president of the Cel-U-DexCorporation (an office products compa-ny), was the author of a book entitled“Filing Facts,” which featured the in-sertable label. The relationship be-tween filing in an office and storingmaterial in a warehouse is strikinglyidentical. The label holder diversifiedinto many other markets: libraries, re-tail display, communications and thenfinally warehouse storage in the 1970s.Today, Aigner Index, Inc, who pur-chased Cel-U-Dex Corp. in 1998, offersa full line of insertable label holdersdistributed through material handlingand industrial supply distributors forindustrial applications.

Depending upon the amount of labeldetail needed and the space available,

size is the first concern when choosinga product. The frequency of labelchanges is also a significant factor, as itcorresponds with choosing the bestbacking option: permanent adhesive, removable adhesive, magnetic, hookand loop fasteners, or a custom “snapon extrusion.” Help on deciding whichbacking is best for a specific applicationis available through Aigner Index’s salestechnicians or through your distributor.

Aigner label holders: The solutionto warehouse efficiency

Aigner’s product offering covers a vari-ety of application solutions for all typesof shelving, including: Pallet racks, flowracks, wire shelving, plastic bins andtotes, floor storage, coated pipe modularcomponents and Extruded Aluminum“T-Slot” modular components.

Barcode labels absolutely must beprotected. An unprotected bar code la-bel can be damaged to the point ofhopelessness by dust, dirt, grease, moisture or smudged label ink. It’s justa matter of time in a warehouse envi-ronment before an unprotected barcode label becomes useless. Then it ei-ther will not scan or even worse, scans

inaccurately (the wrong product…). Thisobviously causes serious shipping andinventory problems which not only cre-ates internal problems, but will irritateor possibly cause the loss of a good cus-tomer. Aigner Insertable Label Holderssolve this problem.

In today’s storage facilities, the oldadage “A place for everything and every-thing in its place” is more applicablethan ever. With today’s emphasis on er-ror proofing, while still maintaininghigh throughput, an effective label hold-er system is critical. This starts withmanagement establishing an identifica-tion system and then supporting that

system with solid procedures and topquality labeling hardware. Well runcompanies realize that misplaced ormisidentified items can contribute toquality problems and shipping delaysthat ultimately cost the company mon-ey. A label holder system is an invest-ment that pays dividends daily.

Cost justification is easy. Whatever theinitial investment cost is for a labelingsystem, it rarely exceeds five percent ofthe total warehouse cost. This relativelysmall investment pays big returns in:

• Improved accuracy of inventory;• Knowledge of material locations;• Employee productivity;

• Ease of normal designation or loca-tion changes; and

• Savings in labor to apply and re-move permanent self adhesive labels —no more.

Clean up time! Mark Aigner, ownerand president of Aigner Index, Inc. (TheLabel Holder Co.), New Windsor, NYadds: “No other function in the ware-house contributes more towards overallefficiency and monetary savings thanan effective labeling system.”

MONTGOMERYVILLE,PA — Philadelphia Scien-tific, The Lean BatteryRoom Experts™, a lead-ing international manu-facturer of industrial bat-tery components and ac-cessories, has introducediBOS® basic, the latestaddition to its line of in-telligent battery organiz-ing systems. iBOS basicoffers the same industryleading battery manage-ment technology andmany of the same fea-tures as iBOS® PRO, butis designed specificallyfor small fleet owners —and at a lower cost.

Prior to the develop-ment of iBOS basic, itwas difficult for smallfleets to properly managebattery assets withoutsignificant expense. Thus, many smaller oper-ations have experienceduneven battery use, which has led to short-ened run times, hot bat-teries, premature batteryfailure and lost produc-tivity. With the introduc-tion of iBOS basic, ware-

houses and distributioncenters can save moneyin three ways: faster bat-tery changes; less fre-quent battery changesand longer lasting batter-ies, reducing the frequen-cy of battery purchases.

iBOS basic can man-age up to 31 chargerswithin a single pool ofbatteries of the samevoltage used for the sametype of forklift truck. LikeiBOS PRO, the system in-structs operators whichbattery to choose basedupon which one has hadthe longest cool downtime since charging.

A backlit display clearlyindicates the number ofthe battery to take next. Ifan operator selects an in-correct battery, a built-inalarm sounds. The dis-play screen provides de-tailed information aboutthe fleet including thenumber of batteriespresently available, bat-tery availability over theprevious 24 hours, thenumber of batteries se-lected and the percentageof incorrect selections.iBOS basic can be quick-ly and easily installed bywarehouse staff.

“A great deal of moneyis wasted in the batteryroom due to poor batteryrotation,” said HaroldVanasse, vice presidentof sales and marketingfor Philadelphia Scientif-ic. “iBOS basic providesan easy, cost effectivesolution to properly

manage battery fleets. Itultimately allows man-agers to reduce thenumber of batterychanges, which in turnwill save time and moneyin the battery room.”
