Course aims To develop basic knowledge needed for mechanical engineer of: general principles of mechanical behaviour and strength of loaded bodies, related terminology and methodology of solving most important strength problems and skills to implement the knowledge above in solving of simple practical strength analysis problems.

Brief description of the course

Purpose and basic principles of strength analysis. Strength of components in compression and tension. Strength of components in torsion. Strength of joints in shear. Properties of plane areas. Strength of components in bending.

Assessment method

Two requirements are set in order to get the final mark:

1. Four homeworks must be submitted;

2. Two part-term written examinations must be passed.

Unsuccessful examinations can be repeated either one-by-one or as joint exams.

Assessment criterion Homeworks will get a mark grade (0 ... 5). The homework will be marked with 0 in the cases when the solution is totally wrong or the solution is not finished or the homework problem does not belong to respective student.

Written examinations are evaluated with credits (0 ... 100). The part-term examination is considered as passed, when it has got minimum 51 credits – in order to get the positive final mark grade all two part-term examinations should be passed with minimum 51 credits each.

Each examination consists of practical assignments, giving a possible total maximum of 80 credits and short theory questions, giving a possible total maximum of 20 credits.

Final mark Grades of all homeworks will be summarized, this is the partial mark grade H1;

Arithmetical average value of all part-term examinations’ credits will be calculated, that will be converted to the partial mark grade H2;

Final mark grade will be calculated with formula: H = H1 + 0,8H2
