Case: Drug Testing in AFL
Present arguments for and against drug testing of AFL players. Is the current AFL policy on drug testing ethically defensible?
Controlling and Monitoring of employees
REVISION FOR EXAM
AFL Anti-doping code This Code applies to:
(a) Players, whether in or out of competition;
(b) Clubs and their Officers;
(c) Officials; and
(d) all persons involved in any capacity or manner in Anti Doping Rule Violations.
Why drug testing:
Employers are legally responsible. Especially if the drug use is related to the performance then
monitoring is justified. Harm to others
Employees reactions Drug Testing is accepted by employees if:
– Executed by a taskforce consisting of co-workers and supervisors– It is random– Procedure is well explained– Supervisors are also included in the testing.– Has a rehabilitation component for employees.
Does the AFL drug policy do this?
Another Arguement Fitness of Duty Testing: responsibility of employers to create suitable
working environment and conditions:
Stress at work, lack of training, high competition, pressure to perform, lack of support at workplace
More aligned with the Stakeholder perspective Also companies responsible for well being of employee,
countering the liberty argument.
Is it in the best interests of the organisation to have a culture of low trust and high discipline?Whose benefit really?
Analysis Punitive approach alone fails to reduce drug use and drug harm.
Positive results that can come through drug policies that create an environment where people with drug concerns can be offered health and welfare Information and assistance privately and with dignity.
The primary focus of the AFL illicit drug policy (IDP) is the health and welfare of players. In essence it is a “three strikes” policy. The first two positive drug tests of any player result in confidential counselling and treatment overseen by AFL medical officers. Financial and game time sanctions may occur if a player returns a third positive drug test.
we need to better understand the factors and conditions that produce athletes who choose to engage in doping – and implement an evidence-based regime of education and prevention to address this culture.
Solution There is nothing like a perfect drug policy
Lot of conversation around Drug testing and Sports in general
Even talks of legalizing drug use.
