Told I Couldn’t Showed I Could

! I felt so nervous so nervous I thought I might Puke right there on the track. Just

thinking back and I still get the same feeling, my first varsity track meet and as a

freshman to! I felt the pain sensation in my nerves, not knowing if I would take last to all

the older guys. I could feel my nervous and pride screaming at me “If you take last you’ll

never forgive yourself! This is your time to prove your worth!”. I had to channel my

nervous into my feet and do my best.

! I thought back to just when the spring sports where about to start. I had to hard

choices I could manage girls soccer and maybe get back into a sport for my early

childhood, or I could stick with a sport I had picked up on in the last few years. When

the choice finally came I picked Track. i showed up to the first practice not knowing what

to expect. I didn’t know if I had enough water, if i should be worried about keeping up,

and most of all if I should be worried about spewing my lunch. The first day I released I

wasn't in bad shape but I had work to do. I trained hard for about two weeks and before

I knew it It was time for time trails. this was when I experienced my first fear in track.

Time trails are like the first impression on someone new do it right and your living good,

but mess it up and your screwed tell you find another chance to shine. When the time

came and I was up it had just started to rain again. Our first challenge was to race a 100

meter dash going in a group with all juniors I was worried. Particularly because I knew

short sprints weren’t my strong suit. When Coach Kimble fired the gun my heart jump I

sprint as well as a could on the soaked track, at the end I was satisfied with second

knowing I had beat out two juniors. one being well over five inches taller than I. The

second challenge was the 400 meter not knowing how this would go I lined up ready in

the same group as last time. All three juniors ready to go as well this time I knew what to

Page 4: MGRP

do I wasn’t going to be beat now. Coach Kimble called to our marks and as I got set I

thought over and over, This is mine this is mine. Seconds later Kimble made the set call

and blasted the gun. I shot out of my blocks and ran by the 200 meter mark I was in the

lead, over joyed I didn’t slow down kept going all the way to the end. When it was all

said and done I had finished first over three juniors. but to top it all of Kimble said

“Congratulations you might just have a future in this event young man”. Some one might

as well handed me a check for a million dollars having the approval of my coach meant

so much to me. My time back then was 64 seconds, which I would break in the first

meet and set my personal record time at 60 seconds or a minute flat.

! With all this on my mind focussing on the race at hand was hard a 200 meter all

the way to the end. But as the man said set I was focussed thinking that I had come this

far from worrying about wether or not I would be of use on the team to running my first

varsity track meet as a freshman. When the gun went off I sprinted as hard as my legs

would drive me, (Michael Dycus would later describe this as me ‘dipping’ it to the end)

when the race finished i was dead tired. I was a little disappointed but not entirely I had

finished 4th out of my heat of eight guys all older than me. So There was no reason to

be disappointed but my pride and competitive spirt wouldn't let me forget my need to

finish first I forced my self to remember this race for next year. One day i will be that

athlete everyone looks at and sees, they will tell stories of me at Benton when I have

gone on into the big leagues for my sports and I will remember these days of

nervousness. Back to my first varsity track meet and smile knowing that was nothing

back then.

The PalmersAny Palmer is a Member, Any Palmer is my Brother

Every Palmer remembers, where all from the same emberNo matter what, the Palmers love one anotherIn the end there always there for each other.

From uncles to aunts down to brother and sister, there my be family blisters,

But if you mess with the family you’ll see our mens knuckles. In the morning we buckle our buckles and stand tall.

But the Palmers are never afraid to chuckle, or help those in need.Though they will never act out of greed it’s all done for free.

The only fee is we hope you will do the same.If you blame us with your shame we can bare it,

We will just take a breath of air and say good day.But to us it’s all the same, so we will shoulder the blame,

and hope you continue the game. But in the end the Palmers know,we all came from the same blend.

On your way to the end you just might notice a trend. So mend your wounds and remember,

we all come from the same ember. And every Palmer is a member

Palmer family name meaningThe Palmer name is of English decent, Palmer was a nick name for pilgrims that traveled to the holly land. When these pilgrims came back as prove that they had traveled to the holly land they would bring back the leaf of a palm trees that where in the holly land. When people saw this they where given the nick name Palmers. Palmer is taken from the root of the Latin word palmifer meaning palm bearer. Most Palmers migrated from England to Ireland and in later years America. My father’s side of the family came from New York and our ancestors names are in the book. One of my ancestors named William Palmer (who my father happens to share the same name as) arrived at Plymouth in the year 1621 on a ship named the Fortune.

BibliographyFor the research done on the meaning of my last name I used www.Houseofnames.com, also for the meaning of last name I interviewed my dad.

For the Obituary I used www.Ancestry.com to find out that Palmers most commonly die of natural causes.
