MGA, in collaboration with several public local universities, organized PRESTIGE 2009 workshop from March 28 to 29 at Hydro Majestic Hotel, Penang. ‘PRESTIGE’ or ‘Practical, Environmental, Safety and Industrial Guidance for Student Engineers’ is a two-day workshop which is adapted from a similar programme run by Shell Malaysia Gas and Power in East Malaysia. This is the second programme organized by MGA following the successful launching of PRESTIGE 2008 in the Klang valley with the participation of 75 engineering students on 23-24 February 2008. The comprehensive Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) workshop covers practical information and tools to enhance awareness on the gas industry as well as the student’s HSE awareness.

Its objectives are:

to create HSE awareness of the proper usage, delivery and application of gas products

to raise understanding of the HSE and Sustainable Development issues faced by the industry today

to enhance the students’ understanding in HSE by sharing tools and practices and its application

to provide an overview of the career opportunities available in the gas industry.

to create awareness amongst the students on the value chain of gas commercialisation

A total of 66 final-year engineering degree students from Universiti Sains Malaysia, University Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UNiKL-MIMET), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and Universiti Teknologi Mara participated in this event. The students were nominated by their respective faculties based on their academic achievement, leadership skills and participation in co-curricular activities.

Datuk (Dr) Abdul Rahim, President of MGA, in his opening address emphasized on the critical need to draw awareness to the enforcement of sound HSE practices related to gas applications with the growing utilization of gas and its impact on practically all aspects of our daily living. Proactive measures are required to prevent and eliminate risk of injuries, accidents in operations and related health hazards that could result in damage to our environment, resources,

assets and property as well as losses in productivity. He encouraged all participants to make full use of this workshop to learn of the importance of HSE in relation to the gas industry as they will be the ‘baton-bearers’ and champions for inculcating HSE practices, behaviors, tools and applications as they venture out to join the workforce in the very near future.

Mr Ron Essers of Shell Malaysia in presenting the closing speech, expressed the hope that this workshop will benefit student engineers as they enter the workforce, to help them appreciate the importance of good HSE practices, and recognise their roles and responsibilities in ensuring their implementation and in inducing a HSE mindset in making HSE part and parcel of the work culture. The students were exposed to a whole host of issues and challenges faced by the gas industry, from safety and health to its impact on the environment. Speakers from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysian Energy Commission, ExxonMobil, PETRONAS, Shell Malaysia and the Department of Environment presented and shared on the various aspects of HSE in relation to the gas industry. The participants through the feedback survey form, expressed their appreciation to be given this opportunity to be exposed to HSE awareness and have benefited greatly from the sharing of experiences from the presenters coming from the gas industry and the government bodies. MGA President and representatives of Council Members from Shell, ExxonMobil, and Gas Malaysia also attended to a Press Conference session in conjunction with this workshop. Universiti Sains Malaysia emerged as the winner of the MGA PRESTIGE 2009 Award of RM5,000, a champion trophy and RM1,500 worth of book vouchers.

About the MGA PRESTIGE Programme

The MGA-PRESTIGE programme is a concerted effort to reach out to the community, specifically to the nation’s future generations, to take up challenges in the gas industry whilst instilling the importance of HSE aspects in the growing prominent and critical role of the gas industry in fuelling nation-building projects. Through the implementation of this programme, MGA also seeks to establish a firm exemplary stand on the propagation and practical application of HSE in the utilization and promotion of gas as a clean, environmental friendly and efficient source of energy. MGA is committed to continue with the implementation of PRESTIGE to cover universities located throughout Peninsular Malaysia to engineering undergraduates who will be the future leaders to head the industry in years to come. To achieve this, MGA seeks the support and participation of interested parties, stakeholders and government bodies to come together to join us in sustaining this initiative as a contribution to our community and nation at large.
