5ELL UP AND 5AIL

"How would you like to chose the sun for six months" This wos the question posed by my

cousin, over the telephone in Moy t998. "Bring your wif e soys he!" f knew he owned q

yocht qnd hqd heord f rom my brother obout his ombition to soil to Cooper fslond in the

British Virgin fslonds. We hod never met, even though in the sixties we both worked

for Shell Tonkers; in my cose os on Apprentice ond Deck Officer for six yeors, and my

cousin retiring in 1978 os o Moster.

At the age of 70 he wos contemploting o six to nine month trip in his 30ft soil ing boat

with us qs his crewl We decided it would be o leorning ond shoring experrence, get us

out of the house, ond give me o good reoson to resign os secretory of the villoge holl

committee.

We spent the next f ew weeks discovering ships' chondleries and buying on ossortment

of heovy weother gear, known qs oil ies, ond reoding books on'how to soil. ' August found

us in Swonseo Morino where we joined the'Morgoret of Deidre'. We hod no ideo whot to

expect, so when we stepped on boord whot f could only describe os o f looting shed, we

were somewhot disoppointed ond opprehensive. Everywhere wqs piled high with popers

ond junk. Spores ond useful bits ond bobs we could understond, but not every bock copy

of every yochting magazine he hod bought in the lqst twenty yeors.

We soon found out thot he wos o mon of f ew words, o typical Shell Tanker Coptoin ofthe old school, oloof qnd eccentric. Some of the chorocter troits Maggie recognised,Tdisployed them in o milder form! We soon found out thot everything stopped ot 1800hrs for G and T's with pre-dinner nibbles.

Our f irst couple of nights were a nightmare , os Maggie found out trying to cook at ostove which wos odjocent to the smoll chort toble cum writ ing desk which our skipperseemed to be permonently ottoched to, writing endless lists, ond moking notes obouteverybody ond everythrng. He pref erred to write rother thon speak , and we decidedthot he wos def initely not a people person, ond 'eguolity' wos not o word he wos fqmiliarwi th.

Our subseguent doys were spent renewing the running rigging, overhouling equipment, and generally trying to bring some sense of order to the 'shed'. We rose ot 0500 to bereody for the shipping f orecost, which had to be recorded word for word. Maggie wosgiven the tosk of provisioning the boot with six weeks supplies, ond stowing both foodond the contents of my cousin's wine cellor.

We hod our f irst sqil from Swonseo to Milford Hoven in o 25-knot wind with seos ond .sproy covering the boot. We were to f ind out thot my cousin wos obout one lessonqheod of us in the soil ing stokes, but in true Yorkshire fashion he couldn't beor towoste ony wind, ond we kept up oll the soils! As the wind veered ond increosed f foundmyself clinging on to the pulpit (the roils ot the front of the boot) wrestl ing with soilsos we chonged from the genoa (large soil) to the no? jib (smoller soil). Eventuolly wehod to stort the engine (whot! Use diesell). Of course he hod f orgotten he hod dropedthe tea towel over the engine to dry, ond it soon stopped omidst o burst of steom ondf loying belts. But by this time it wos ofternoon, ond ogoin os we found out, siesta timelTime for asleep qnd contemplote the problem. This left Maggie ond f to wrestle withthe sqils ond keep her on course, in between Maggie throwing up ond me f eeling verygueosy. Later thot doy with the belt reploced ond 'the engine restorted we f inollyorrived of our destinotion ond ot 2130 hours tied up to o buoy in the river.

After f urther prepcrotion, follouts and neor mutiny, we left Milford Hqven on 1lthSeptember L998, my cousin's Tl" birthday. We hod 20 gollons of diesel fuel, ond 30gollons of fresh woter for o 1200 mile trip down the Atlontic to Porto Sonto. Theforecost wos not good: weheaded out into near gale f orce winds ond f inclly set ocourse for the Atlontic with the wind behind us ond with the storm soil hoisted. Withbreoking seas, green sprqy, ond the boot slomming it wos very diff icult to stoy uprightond to eot ond sleep in such conditions . We kept wotches of 3 hrs on ond 6 of f , ond frecorded in my diory hoving to leave Maggie on wotch ot midnight, in o cockpit with no

sproyhood or dodgers (protection from the seos). This wos her f irst time on watch

alone, hooked on with two lifelines ond her orm oround the standing rigging.

Next doy she wos covered in bruises. We endured three doys ond nights of buff ettng

ond pounding recording 130.4 nm in one doy, not bod for a coostol yocht.

ft wos o twelve-doy soil to Porto Sonto during which time we experienced on increose in

temperature, dolphins, engine foilures, three doys of hond steering, ond monogement

meetingsl We olso discovered thot cooking posto ond boiling pototoes in seowoter is not

o culinory delight! As the fresh woter wos only for drinking we mode good use of our

seawater toiletries.

Moking londfoll on your f irst foreign trip is olwoys exciting, ond Moggie wos on wotch

when the islond came over thehorizon. We dropped the soils ond motored into the

horbour for o welcome run oshore.

We spent three months on the boot, soiling to the Conory fslonds ond visiting all the

islonds.

We found morinq lif e very much to our

liking so much so we decided to buy

our own boot. f hadbeen trocking o

through thebroker to see this boot.

fn Februqry 1999 we bought the boot

ond in July the some yeqr sold the

moving between Hortlepool ond

Next more from our old friend "Countryboy"

"This is onother footboll story ond I moke no opologies for thot.

As most readers will know, the footboll PAA cup wqs (ond I believe still is) akeenly

contested competition. For three consecutiveyears, in the eorly 70s Hull City Police

were drawn ogainst North Woles Police or in those for owoy doys f think the Force woscolled Gwynedd Constobulqry. fn 1971 we were ot home but for the next two yeors wewere drown owoy. Greot excitement omong the footboll teom. We hod on owqy tie. Wehod the whole Force to select from. Not only those who graced the colours of Sir

Mott's teom, Police Central, but olso those from the dork Division on the Eost side ofthe river.

This teom wos Police Eost ond I didn't know ony of the ployers, f didn't know where

Crowle Street wos qnd coming f rom the country f wosn't too sure where Eost Hull wos.

Police East's secretary wos Bob Morshall and the ployers selected to represent HullCiIy Police in the PAA cup f rom thot eosterly outpost were Dove Moody, John (knocker)

Wott ond their diminutive goolkeeper Borry Foster. The remoinder were from Police

Central qnd if Eric Spoven wosn't there he should have been.

This motch wqs to be ployed ot the ground of Llondudno Town who graced the loftyheights of the Welsh Leogue. Now s supermorket f or Asdq it wos the scene of one ofour gr eat est victories.

Arcangements for the motch commenced but o lowly fnspector (Sir Mott @ Bob Dixon)wos not considered to hove suff icient ronk to represent Hull City Police. Great thoughtwos given to which senior officer would occompony the teom ond qfter muchdeliberotion looking f or the condidote who hod oll the right guolit ies of decorum ondpolite conversotion, Chief fnspector Eric Peorce wos selected.

The Journey - 10.00om Mondoy October t97t

Meet of Queens Gardens canteen f or the stort of o 3 doy epic journey to the otherside of the country. No sotell i te novigotion, no 3 miles to on inch rood otlos, no

motorwoys ond very few duol corriogewoys. Fortunotely there was olso very little

troff ic. f volunteered to drive but borrowed my brother's 1966 D reg twin carb

M61100 os f wos not sure my cor would moke it. One of the f losh lods from Crowle

StreeI hod o Ford Cortino 1600E but then Dove Moody olwoys wqs o bit f losh.

I guickly reolised GeorgeHodges wos not gifted ot mop reading so Dove Holmes tookover ond wos eguolly crop.Never the less we orrived in our B&B some 10 hours loter

hoving seen most of West Yorkshire, ond ports of whot is now South Yorkshire pqssing

through such towns os Cleckhuddersfox ond the like.

Motch Doy - Breokfost: fn the quoint surroundings of our Llondudno dining room f sot

ond took in the scene.Therewereprobobly obout 16 burly coppers recoveringfrom

hongovers from the previous night of getting to know the locol pubs. Not the bestpreporotion for on importont motch but by kick off we would be bright eyed and bushy

toiled. Course we would.

Neotly loid out tobles with o cruet set in the middle. Nopkins ond the rest oll very nice

and occomponied by polite conversotion ond our hopes f or theforthcoming motch.

We hod orronged o round of pitch ond putt. I felt like o professionol footbqller (thot's

where the similority ended). But before thot wewere treoted to o competit ion in which

only two plcyers took port. Eric Peorce and Trevor Hewson werethe only contestonts.

Eric stqrted f irst guickly followed by Trevor. They both continued breaking wind and

corried on for whot seemed most of breokfost. ft wos ot this stoge f reolised why EricPearce hod been selected to boss the footboll trip. Never before hod I encountered o

mon who hqd so much control over his bowels - someone to be odmired ond looked up to.

Onto the ground, which wos surrounded by reol stonds ond o dug out with o tin roof forthe manager.

f con't remember anything obout the motch. f con't remember if I ployed but f know we

won ond earned o second round tie. After mqtch celebrations followed and we were

invited to the locol Police Stotion where we celebrated our victory ond q huge buff et

wos prepared in our honour. The Chief Constoble of North Wales accomponied by guite

o f ew senior of f icers congrotuloted us on our victory ond we celebraled in the time

honoured trodition of getting p****d.

The story come to on obrupt end in the next round when we were soundly beaten by the

chompions Stoke ond Stoffordshire Police."

Voluntory Stotements

I think these o?e a thing of the post now, but who can forget those unfortunqtes who

hod to write the finol porogroph themselves:

"f ov red the qbove stotement. f ov bin told thot f con crect, holter or hod enythink f

wish. This stotment is true, f ov mod it of my own three wil l."

This stotement wos often shown to o co-occused in order to get them to odmit their

port in the off ence ond f do not recoll onyone ever commenting on the spelling of theirportner in crimel

Con You Imogine This?

Ron Sogor writes: During the lqst week of the existence of Hull City Police in Morcht974, Deputy Chief Jim Cocksworth honded to me the ottoched copy (4 poges) of omemo dated 13th September 1950 ond soid thot the instructions therein, written by the then Chref Constoble Sidney Lawrence, were octuolly the

foundotion of the efficrency of the Kingston upon Hull City Policethereafter. Poor oldJim wqs guite emotionol ot the time ond odded thot policing in Hullwould never be os efficlent after omolgomotion. He olso soid thot the doythe memo wos circulqted mony senior officers trembled in their boots ot thethought of being tied down so tightly by the instruction.

Discipline or Modness??

fmogine if you cqn, o bitterly cold night (eorly morning 2om) with the snow inches thick,f reezrng os it londed on your helmet, cope ond everything else. Imogine trying to get your outer clothing off without moking o sound, ond succeeding, when sudd enly the silence is shottered by o loud strident voice echoing oround the box.Everyone just obout jumps through the roof os the voice screcms from the front office"Get out 280, you've sti l l got two minutes to go beforeyour breok". Thot's discipline.

To prove how unusuol he wos, the some Sergeant used to wqnder up ond downHolderness Rood in the middle of the night ond when the beot mon wosn't whereheshould be, the SergeonI would stride into the centre of the rood ond beqt o monholecover with his night stick so furiously thot eventhe tomcots used to jump. ........IT WAS THE CADET'S FAULT!!

I think it is t ime to remember the Hull City Police Cadets, those members who hod o

misspent youth running erronds, typing, cleaning, moking teo,,etcl. They were told ot

the time it wos oll port of leorning to become o good copper. Well,Ihere must be monytoles qbout their (boys ond girls) contribution to the Force history. I know, becquse f

wos one.

fn lote summer of 1962, f commenced duty in o shiny new, blue f loshed, serge uniform

ond wos described os o'bobby dazzler'by Jock Fox, the Recruiting Sergeont. My firstpositing wos to Central Division ond, qs codet postings to territoriol divisions were

something of o plum job, f wos hoppy and groteful. Keen divisionol codets performed

functions thot seemed closer to reol police work. Not for them the delivery of 'hond

No, they were doubled up with o (not olwoys willing) Beot Constoble ond eage? we were

ft wos on the whole, more interesting, even if o little trying f or other stoff .

At Central,Tbecame the Divisional Officer/Lost & Found Cadet - becouse f wos thejunior, qt leost occording to my predecessor Molcolm Donsworth. He moved on to other

Stotion Sergeonts of the doy were John Crowley ond his opposite number (in noture

too), Len Robinson. f spent most of my time ossisting the Property Officer, Bernord

Goodworth who wos, fortunotely, o potient mon. There, we deolt with property

enquiries with the completion of endless property cords ond moking entries into the

registers. These oll hod to be doneperf ectly, for thot wos the Hull City woy. Then,

once a month, come the dreoded task of moving oll the found cycles oround of their

rocks in the bosement, o grimy ond sweoty undertokin g. Tf Donsworth wosn't oround,

space-age mqchine which, once mqstered, wos o'doddle', providing you remembered not

to use ink on the Ringing Sheet , for then you would receive a well deserved clip round

T began to guite enjoy myself . The only downside wos o tosk thot could not be ovoided.

All codets ot CPS had to toke turns serving in the Officers' Mess ot lunchtime. This

wos o tosk we oll regorded os being o misuse of our time; of course, no one else thought

so. One codet ottoched to Admin was on more or less, permonent'Officers' Mess Duty'

ond it wos to be his ossistont thot you wondered up there ot lunchtime ond donned o

white jocket. The only compensotion wqs o f ree lunch but f am not certoin thot even

f ree grub mode it worth it.

The Mess itself could be o l itt le cromped when full of officers, who ronged in ronk

f rom Chief Bob Wolton downword. When full, l ike on 'Fish & Chip' Fridoy, codets hod to

odopt a degree of dexlerity in serving. There were of course, the odd occidents, but

usuolly nothing serious. Mine, however, wos olmost cotostrophic - os for os career

prospects were concerned. ft occurred on'Curry Doy'when the Mess wos busy due to

being oble to serve, take poyment qnd bring bock change with some efficiency.

Noturolly, we lesser mortqls tried to do this too.

T very well recoll thot, on this doy, T entered with severol plotes of curry ond went to

serve Jock Potterson, the Admin Sup't, who olso wonted his chonge - the princely sum

of threepence. ft wos then thot disoster struck. As f turned toword him, the troy

ongled over ond bef ore you could soy'poppodom' o plote slip over the edge, glanced off

the toble, turned over qnd deposited the contents on Jock Potterson's lop. I hove to be

fair, there wos not q lot of sweoring; guite o bit of shouting, but no obscenities.

Shocked, f mode to wipe him down with my trusty teo towel when, to my surprise ond

the considerable amusement of the others, Jock only wqnted his moneyl I swiftly

recovered it from the curry stoined corpet qnd wos amazed thot there wcs no furtherreoction, either then or loter. Of course, f didn't get asked to do the Mess ot

lunchtime for o while, but thot wqs no hordship of oll. Meonwhile, of Centrol, mycontentment moy well have continued, hod it not been for onother new codet, one AlecButlerf His f irst posting wos to the CID General Office, not one of the best in thecodet populority stokes. Now, if Alec hqd ony foults ot the time, it wos one of overconfidence ond it wos this thot led to o personol disoster, one thot resulted in his nomebeing known throughout the Force.

Alec had guickly settled into his role ot the Cf D, perhops q little too settled somemight soy loter. The heqd of the CfD wos, of course, Jim Cocksworth, o mon not olwayseosy on his juniors ond f om sure he knew Cadet Butler olreody. He wos o busy mon ondgot through on owful lot of poperwork, which involved o lot of stomping ond signing. Aso conseguence, his inkpod often dried out ond would require re-inking. On suchoccosions, he would telephone down to the CID Stotion Sergeant,Herbert Horrison, who would guickly poss this on to the codet. The sprog would then dosh down thecorridor, retrieve the pad, return to the General Office and squeeze ink from o bottleon to the podbefore returning it - oll in q motter of minutes of course.

On this porticulor' inking' day, Alec was the codet whenthe coll come. Hesped to thegovernor's office, knocked and entered, where, much to Big Jim's surprise, he did hisown thing. Picking up the pod, he ploced it on o side toble ond produced on inkbottlefrom his pocket, whilst oll the time trying to moke smoll tolk with Cocksworth - who ofcourse ignored him. The boss wos, os usuol, dressed in o crisp white shirt, the sleevesbuttoned at the cuff ond held tout by shiny, elosticised ormbonds. You con imogine himtrying to concentrote whilst Alec storted to ink the pod. Anyone who has ever donesuch o thing moy recoll thot the bottle hod o rubber opplicotor on the top, which oftenbecame gummed up with dried ink. Such wos the cose on this doy, but unperturbed,Alec continued his chot whilst shoking the bottle. At some point, frustrotion replocedcommon sense qnd he resorted to thumpingthe bottle's bottom - hord.

The result wos inevitoble. A lorge splod ge of thick block ink wos projected down ontothe pod from whence sploshed shot in oll directions, but mostly over the Det-Sup'tswhite shirt. His shouting wos opporently heord ot the Wing Divisions. Within the hour, the deportment become too smoll for Alec ond Big Jim - someone hod to gol Needlessto soy, it wos not Cocksworth ond my, oll too brief sojourn of Centrol ,came to o suddenond unexpected end. The next morning, f wos thenew CTD General Office Codet ondAlec Butler got my old job. ft is foir to soy thot f did not think it o foir swqp.

f found thot in the CID General Office, the codet sot qt the f ar end next to the publiccounter. fn the middle wos the CID desk(s), monned on shif ts by people like MessrsFowler, Hopwood, Lilley, O'Grady ond Rqmsey (with Herbert sitting near the entroncewith his bock to the woll). Eqch time o citizen filled out onApplicotion Form,3 record cords hod to betyped out (with 2fingers). Onefiled withthe cycle's description, qnother under the f rame number ond o nice one for the owner. The lotter ond its envelope hod to be absolutely perf ect, Hull City style. Needless tosoy, the woste paper bin wos olwoys full!

At the time of my crrivol, Fronk Fisher, the Crime Prevention fnspector, hodcommenced visit ing City schools ond distributing Cycle Registrotion opplicotion forms ingreat numbers. Consequently, f hod only just got my f eet under the toble when fsuddenly became very busy indeed. 5o, os well qs being a generol foctotum, every other

moment wos occupied typing. DCI Bob Hather ond Fronk Fisher storted to toke a greatinterest in my forms ond me os the'fn' troy begon to overf low. They storted to mokecomments. I hod to do something.

5o, the next time Hother wondered over, the troy wos procticolly empty. f wosonswering the counter os his eyes met mine. fnsteqd of being sotisfied, he sidled olongthe desk, hooked one finger oround the drower hondle ond pulled. An ovolonche of

opplicotion forms tumbled onto the f loor. With o glare, he stolked off , giving HerbertHqrrison his opinion on the woy out. The roll icking wos duly possed on - with bells onl

Later, f wos oble to leave an olmost permonent memoriol of my possing, there in theCfD corridor. A couple of Hull Corporotion pointers colled of the counter, to collectsome 'Other thon Found' point ofter o court cose. Herbert Harrison wheezed off tothe Property Store, which wqs ocross the corridor ond guickly colled on me to help. The stolen emulsion point wos stocked in2layers in on old cordboord box. As I l i ftedmy side, f reolised thot it wqs l ioble to collopse ond very soon. My opinion wos listened

to ond promptly ignored. Herbert's end wos, evidently, more robust thon mine.

We got holfwoy ocross the corridor when my piece of box storted to tear. f shouted oworning ond lowered my side of the box. Herbert borked for meto keep going, but wostoo late. fn opporent slow motion, most of the top layer of cons fell on to the f loor, their l ids popping open. Actuolly, it only took seconds for the immoculote dork wood, porguet f looring to be covered byospreoding pool of Hull Corporotion's finest creomemulsion. Herbert qnd f knelt ond storted to scoop up the point. After o while, f

became owore of o poir of shiny born brogues ond looked up to see Jim Cocksworthlooking down of us. My voliont Sergeant wos guick to reoct. Without o moment'shesitqtion, he wheezed those immortol words "It wos the codet's foult!"

Surprisingly, there wos no immediote posting f or me, whilst the stoin outlasted Big Jim.f lost noticed it, some 30 yeors later, just beforethe porguet wos token up ond

speciol religious reguirements. Our prisoners now come from Russio, Lotvio,

Polond, Somolio, frog, Kosovo ond onyone else who is in the oreq of the time

from wherever. They oll hove unpronounceable nomesl Con't speok o word of

English, when in custody, but mqnqge to in bors ond clubs.

Hqve things chonged? Yes they hove: they ore more diff icult with the number

of chonges in populotion ond culturol chonges thot come with it. Knife crime is

rif e, drug crime is the mqin reoson for committing off ences, domestic off ences

ore increasing ond internet sex off enders qre on the incresse. These oll take up

voluoble person hours ond moke the job todoy much mo?e diff icult ond

loboriously time consuming. Thot's why we hove business chonge, community

wordens, community supports off icers elc, etc, to do the job officers con't.

5o whot hos chonged? Thejob is more difficult becouse of governrnent "do

gooders", more public intervention ond qccountobility. A world of targets, league

iobles ond comporison chorts. Hos it changed, is it stil l the some? Whqt hos

chonged: fs it the longuoge? fs it technology? Coughs (odmissions) ore out the

window- in most coses solicitors hove o hond in thot. ft 's quite surprising the

number of remonds we used to hove compored to now; is it just thqt the Legal

Aid grovy troin hqs been de-roiled or arethere other reosons? The forensic

evrdence we poid little heed to is now ot the forefronl of modern policing.

Whot is LCN, DNA, Mutli Locus probes, skunk connobis?

It's oll o new longuage, but thqt's chonge for you.
