LIR MFA SHOWCASE 2014 3

WELCOME TO THE LIRThe MFA Showcase is a collaboration of productions and readings written, designed and directed by MFA students at The Lir.

This series of inaugural events mark the end of the students training at The Lir and the beginning of their careers in set design, costume design, lighting design, theatre directing and playwriting. These showcases are a great opportunity for the current and past students to exhibit the skills they’ve learned and honed whilst training at The Lir and at the same time giving them the experience of working with their peers and established theatre makers.

LIR MFA SHOWCASE 2014 5WEEK 1

Foxfinder Midsummer

A foxfinder arrives at Samuel and Judith’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination, driven by the belief that the beast must be unearthed and destroyed to protect man’s very existence - but his mission threatens to irreparably alter the course of all their lives. Foxfinder, winner of the Papatango New Writing Competition in 2011, is an unsettling, darkly comic parable set in a future both strange and familiar.

Against their better judgement Gwen, Matt, Mike and Roxy all end up at a speed-dating night. In a hyper connected world where self curated virtual profiles are the starting point for our relationships, the four characters struggle with existing in the present moment, constantly wishing to capture and record, to interpret their experiences from a safe distance.

Ellen Flynn (MFA Playwriting The Lir Academy) and Sugarglass Theatre bring you a new play that explores what it means to try and create a real connection with an ‘other’.

Scripted

The Lir Academy at Trinity College Dublin presents a showcase of new plays by this year’s graduating MFA playwrights.  The six MFA playwrights (from Ireland, Scotland and America) have been immersed in training led by Graham Whybrow (former Literary Manager of the Royal Court) and taught by playwrights, dramaturges and literary managers, including Gavin Kostick (Fishamble), Michael West, Karin McCully, and Thomas Conway (Druid).

‘Scripted’ has a professional cast including graduate actors from The Lir. It offers script-in-hand readings of extracts, and a chance to hear new plays from new playwrights:
