Hi. We’re Lindsay and Molly from the Mattress Factory.

Located in the Mexican War

Streets on the North Side

The Mattress Factory is a

research and development lab

for artists

Site-specific installations

Usually temporary

We’re one of the first and only

installation museums in the world

What is the Mattress Factory?

Q: So what’s the problem?A: Documenting and sharing installation art is challenging

How would you know that inside this box…

Based on this image…

…and this view?

…and this view at different times?

Or that this…

looks like this from the floor below?

How do we show that both of these pieces are in the same spot, 17 years apart?

1993 2010

In process photo of Sarah Oppenheimer?

How do we share the stories of the creation process?

Or the experience of being in an installation?

…we were a theater.

How do we share the stories of the years when…

Or when the building next to the Mattress Factorycaught fire…

And in 1993 artist Winifred Lutz turned it into “The Garden”

…or that people get married in “The Garden”?

…or that Performance Art occurs in the garden?

…or that Rolf Julius sound art plays in the garden?

How do we share that the Mattress Factory was once….

…a vegetarian food co-op?

…the 1414 gallery building was a bar?

Or that back in the day…

• Images of eastern eu show

Or that artist’s intention…

…involves a time-dependent process of decay?

We need solutions that help us share the sense of experiencethat is paramount to installation art with the world…

…with the help of archivist assistant Lucy T. Jones, mummy lover.(Supported by the Google Community Grants Fund. Thank you.)

…when she’s not licking bones, she breaking stuff in the archives office.

An ideal interface would be

physical and digital.

The interface can be simple or complex.

Idea 2: Window into the past

Idea 1: Elevator showcase

We want the world to share their insights with us.
