• Before the U.S. became independent, the pioneers took the red line (trails) to go to the west.

Before and Now

America in the 1800’s was a small country but James K. Polk promised to the people that as President, he would expand the country to the west.

James K. Polk

• James K. Polk was inaugurated president on 1845.

• He wanted to expand American territory to the Pacific Ocean.

• The U.S. purchased territory of Alta California and New Mexico for $18,000,000.

The Mexican American War

• The war happened on April 1846, and end on Feb. 1848.

• On March 25 the Mexican Government ratified it. The war was over.

• The war with Mexico gave the U.S.A. California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

• Treaty was signed on February 2, 1848 and ended the war.

• Mexico lost a great part of their territory. The gray and the red part are Alta California and Texas.
