Mewvie was conceived over dinner one night in thespring of 2004. Mewvie founders and long time friendsJeff Walderich and Fred Emmer were having dinnerwhen the conversation turned to the idiosyncrasies ofcats. Amongst other items, Jeff brought up the fact thathe’d observed his cat, Paris occasionally watching theAnimal Planet channel. Fred agreed that he’d seen hisown cat C.T. watching television as well, albeit for onlyvery short durations.

Fred and Jeff began theorizing why their cats were soeager to watch when animals were on television, only tolose interest so quickly. They decided that the “made forhuman” nature of television production, (jump cuts, cam-era pans and zooms, not to mention commercials) waspotentially disorienting to the cats. They were sointrigued with the question; they actually decided to testtheir hypothesis.

That weekend, Fred and Jeff used their home videoequipment to capture birds gathering on a back yardbirdfeeder. They made sure to maintain a completely sta-tionary camera perspective, with neither zooming nor

panning. Later that day, Paris the cat “went nuts” watch-ing the video. Fred’s cat C.T. similarly demonstrated hereager affection for the new home movie.

That might have been the end of the story exceptthat both cats’ reactions were so hilarious Jeff decided toshow his wife’s parents at a weekend gathering. Youguessed it, the in-laws wanted a copy of the tape for theircat! (Hmm… maybe there’s something to this!)

So Fred and Jeff decided to see which animals werecats’ favorites to watch on television. They recruitedseven close friends – all cat owners – who agreed to helpby watching their cats watch the demo DVD. The youngvideographers went out, rented professional equipment, and set about filming twenty different scenes with adiverse variety of small animals.

By the time the twenty scenes were shot, edited, andburned into DVDs for distribution, a funny thing had hap-pened. The initial testing group of seven cat owner fami-lies had grown to thirty families! It seemed that every-body who heard about the project wanted to be involved!

The new group was split about evenly between singlecat and multiple cat households. The cats were fromurban and suburban homes and both strictly indoor aswell as indoor/outdoor cats. Most important of all wasthe diversity of ages – young, old and middle aged catswere included in the sample.

Each cat owner family agreed to complete detailedsurveys of how each cat reacted to each scene. Tailtwitches, ear twitches, screen pawing and pouncing werecarefully noted and numerically tallied. Speed of interest, duration of interest and intensity of interest were allrecorded. Between the twenty different scenes and the50 different cats, 1,000 feline viewing experiences weretested. All those results were entered into a spreadsheetand after a proper and thorough statistical analysis, thetop eight scoring scenes were selected for the firstMewvie production,“Episode One: Backyard Buffet.” Sincebirds were clearly the testing favorite,“Episode Two:Birdland Bonanza” was also rushed into production.

Mewvie debuted to the public in a booth at the TulsaState Fair in October 2004 and sold over 500 copies in tendays. Mewvie is available now on at the web site,www.Mewvie.com where people from 34 states andCanada have made purchases. Fred and Jeff still retaintheir respective jobs in economic development andadvertising, and market Mewvie part time.

However, in addition to its entertainment quali-ties, Mewvie elegantly addresses real world problemsthat indoor cats face such as separation anxiety andfeline boredom.

“Backyard Buffet” (episode one) contains eight differ-ent scenes of a variety of small animals in imaginative set-tings that cats like to watch. Specifically, the animals aresparrows, degus (a South American rodent) crickets andbeetles, squirrels in groups, nesting purple martens, achinchilla, a solitary squirrel and white mice. Each scene is11.5 minutes long for a total duration of 90 minutes – theequivalent of a feature film.

“Birdland Bonanza”(episode two) contains four differ-ent birds scenes. Features Benefits

Strategic screen placement of animal actors – “Action at the Edge”

Through extensive research on feline viewing habits andbehaviors, Mewvie producers discovered that while catslove watching small animals on TV, they especially love itwhen those animals get right next to the edge of thescreen. Cats get particularly excited when the “animalsin the box” appear to be leaving the box… when theyare just at the edge of the screen. Using clever stagingand filming techniques, Mewvie producers ensured thatlots of animals frolic right at the edges of the screen.

Crowd scenes, solo scenes and empty scenes Research showed that while most cats love watching atelevision teeming with small animals, many find such ascene overwhelming, confusing and lose interest.

Mewvie producers made sure to include scenes for themore reserved cats that prefer to focus their attentionon one animal at a time.

Another interesting fact they learned is that one of thebest things they could do to heighten a cat’s interestwas to purposely leave some scenes completely emptyfor a few seconds. When a subject animal disappearedfrom the screen, cats eagerly anticipated its return.

DVD A DVD has a long lifespan. With proper care, a DVD canlast as long as the owner’s cat. If a cat lives 10 years, that’s less than a penny per day.

Cats are also notorious for losing their favorite toys.Thisis one toy a cat won’t knock under the refrigerator.

How do cats react?Since your cat is a predator, common reactions to Mewvieare hunting behaviors like stalking, and pouncing. Not allcats are ready to pounce but be ready to see your catswiping at animals, twitching their tails and perking theirears as the Mewvie soundtrack fills the room with threevarieties of stimulating bird songs.

Will the cat’s claws scratch my glass television screen? Not unless you have a cat with diamond studded claws! The glass on your television screen is so much harderthan your cats claws you can rest assured your glassscreen is safe. IMPORTANT: Mewvie producers would adviseagainst playing the Mewvie on a rear projection fabric-screen television if the cat is within striking distance.

Will my cat get bored with it?Most cats express interesting and fascinating hunting behav-iors when first exposed to Mewvie. Some never tire and will“hunt”the Mewvie for hours at a time. Most eventually realizethat the animals “in the box”cannot be captured, whereuponthey settle down to comfortably and peacefully watch.

When watching Mewvie, your cat’s neurology willissue an internal chemical reward that encourages repe-tition. While your cat’s expression of visible huntingbehaviors may eventually diminish, remember that con-tinued viewings of Mewvie will provide your cat with amild sense of euphoria.

I have an old cat. Will he be interested? The Mewvie producers tested Mewvies with cats of all ages. Some of the most enthusiastic cats were over ten years old!

My cat already likes watching birds andsquirrels from our windows. That’s great if you have animals outside for your cat towatch. Mewvie lets you bring those delectable sightseven closer to your cat… along with the important out-door sounds he’s missing now.

My cat sleeps all day – he’d never watch it! If your cat is sleeping more than 16 hours per day, there’s a good chance it’s because he needs a morestimulating environment. Mewvie will be a big help butyou might want to make some other accommodationsfor him as well.

My cat never watches television.Well of course he doesn’t watch television, there aren’tany shows made for cats! But now there can be, just popa Mewvie into your DVD player and let him enjoy com-mercial-free entertainment made just for him.

My cat already watches television. Whydoes he need a Mewvie? Many cats have already discovered the television and theiroccasional viewing is amusingly noted by cat owners.Owners commonly report that their cats like to watchfootball, basketball, NASCAR, and especially Animal Planet.

Invariably this interest is short lived because of the“made for human” nature of television editing, zooming, panning, and especially commercial breaks.

If your cat likes to watch regular television now… he’llabsolutely love watching a Mewvie on your television.

My cats live outdoors most of the time. They probably wouldn’t be interested inwatching animals on television. All cats are instinctual hunters. And when your outdoor cathas to be indoors for any length of time, a Mewvie makes agreat (and much safer) substitute for actual hunting.
