Committees for the 2018-2019 year are being formed. Please visit the Officers & Committees tab on the club website to find a descriptor of each committee. Every member is encouraged to sign up for at least one committee each year. The Membership Committee still has Rotary window clings (sample pictured at right) available for purchase at only $2 each. Please contact Casey Buckman to get yours.

The 8th Annual Metro Rotary Float Trip is planned for July 7 at Bass River Resort. Directions to the location are on page four of this newsletter. Please contact Casey Buckman if you plan to attend. The Metro Board of Directors will meet July 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Columbia Country Club.

On August 8, a “Stop the Bleed” training will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Columbia Country Club. After a traumatic event, the fate of a person suffering from severe blood loss often

will be determined before professional medical help arrives. This program is designed to turn bystanders into life-savers. Please contact President Tom if you wish to attend the training.

On September 16, there will be a cornhole tournament at Katfish Katy’s. $20 per team. Proceeds benefit PolioPlus. Dues for the 2018-2019 year are now payable. You may pay $200 now, or $100 in two installments. Payments should be forwarded to Laura Kogut via check, cash or online.

Project Salsa is a summer program for high school youth to learn job readiness and life skills through hands-on experiences with professionals. Volunteers are needed to provide

job shadowing opportunities for local youth. Please contact Sarah Read if you would be willing to assist with this important program.

Congratulations to Loretta

Financial Update

Thank you to everyone who has purchased lunches during the past year. This goes a long way to help offset the cost to the club for use of this meeting space. In case you were unaware, the Country Club assesses our club a minimum of 30 lunches per meeting, currently at $13 per lunch, but increasing to $14 in 2018-19. We average about 20 purchased lunches per meeting. At this rate, we have paid an average of $130 per week to make up for the shortage of the minimum requirement. Any amount that other members would like to or be willing to contribute, especially if you do partake of some food (i.e. cookies) and drink, would be greatly appreciated. We continue to provide for our members what has been determined to be a great meeting place at one of the lowest levels of club dues in the district. Your consideration and support is needed and would be greatly appreciated.

Rotary Wins Best Nonprofit Act for its Polio Eradication Work Rotary’s commitment to eradicating polio worldwide won Best Nonprofit Act in the Hero Awards of the One Billion Acts of Peace campaign, an international global citizens’ movement to tackle the worlds’ most important issues. The campaign is an initiative of PeaceJam Foundation and is led by 14 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, including the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Rigoberta Menchu Tum, with the ambitious goal of inspiring a billion acts of peace by 2020. Each year, the campaign picks two finalists in each of six categories for their work to make a measurable impact in one of the 10 areas considered most important by the Nobel laureates. Winners are chosen by people from around the world. Rotary and Mercy Corps were the two finalists in the Best Nonprofit Act category. Rotary and the five other winners will be recognized at a ceremony on June in Monaco. Betty Williams, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for her advocacy for peace in Northern Ireland, will present the award.

Rotarians are very much more favorably

disposed toward action than they are

toward words.”
