What is Metro Ethernet?
Metro Ethernet is the use of Carrier Ethernet technology in metropolitan area
networks (MANs) offering high capacity, managed network services.
The Attributes of Metro Ethernet are:

a wide range of standardized yet improved
services, including converged network services.
Scalability: Can be implemented in bandwidth

• A feasibility study and site survey must be conducted before a customer is presented with a final
quote for Metro E Solutions
• Standard Metro E Fibre build per site
•Single link – 400m from Vodacom’s access ring to the customer’s computer room where the
Vodacom provided fibre terminating unit will reside
•Dual link – 800m from Vodacom’s access ring to the customer’s computer room where the
Vodacom provided fibre terminating unit will reside
• Distances greater than the above are charged at R500.00 per meter
• Fibre build charges may amortised over 8-years (96-months)
• Additional Fibre Build charges must not be confused with RFO costs within the customer premises or
backhaul.
• Site Requirement Specification are the pertinent items that Vodacom requires a customer to have on
site so that we can deliver the service to them. If these items are not in place, Vodacom will not
deliver the service as we cannot guarantee its performance. Vodacom will quote (SRQ) the customer
to provide and install the relevant items in order to “get the site ready “ for installation. These items
generally become the customers asset therefore the customer is liable for such costs. E.g. Ducting,
air-conditioning, non standard pipes, cable trays, etc. included in new NRC.
• Metro E IPConnect Services – if the customer site is greater than 50km from a Vodacom IP Point of
Presence (POP), additional backhaul charges will be applicable i.e. NLD backhaul, Telkom MetroClear
or Neotel.
• Metro E LANConnect Services – if the customer Site A is greater than 50km from customer site B
additional backhaul charges will apply.
• DFA LOS or BTS lease applies for last mile backhaul where we do not have a fibre ring up to
the curb

• Greater than 3 hops will be provided only with written customer consent. Only a best effort service will be provided to
the customer in this instance.

•512Kbps -1Mbps in 64kbps increments, 1Mbps to 5Mbps in 1Mbps increments – P2MP Microwave
• Upgrade of links will also need to follow the above mentioned bandwidth increments
• All bandwidths can be provided on 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 year contract terms.
• The non-recurring fee may not be waivered / discounted under any circumstances for new customers (even if existing
infrastructure is in place) or for a new service for an existing customer.
• Microwave back up link can have single node or Dual node which informs the SLA.
• Microwave back-up link only available for self-provided fibre
• Secondary link for 3rd party access at standard rates
• Microwave as a temporary service to fibre is charged at Fibre rates.
