Metric Parameters and Denominations of the Coins of Anchialos

ABSTRACT: The coinage of Anchialos was realized in the period from the reign of Emperor

Hadrian ( 117-138 AD ) till the end of the reign of Emperor Gordian III ( 244 AD). During this

one century the city coinage has been minting coins for nine principes and members of their

families. This study aims to determine how many and what denominations of coins were minted

in Anchialos for each one of them. It is important to note that during the reign of Hadrian there

were no coin emissions minted with his portrait image in Anchialos. During this initial period of

the urban coinage there were only coins of small denominations with Greek and Eastern images

on the coins obverse and reverse the so called quasiautonomous coins.

M. Strack, J. Jurukova and E. Schnert-Geiss studies have the largest contribution to

the clarifying of the Anchialos coins denominations. The main problem of these studies which

were topical for the time being but are now anachronistic, is the limited number of copies which

was at the authors disposal. This, we believe, is the main reason for some mistakes in

determining the denomination of some urban emissions.

There are 2191 coins and 29 medallions included in this study. There is metric data

(diameter and weight) for only the relatively well-preserved copies. Corroded coins or those

whose nuclei has missing fragments are not included in the study.

Given the large number of investigated coins, we can use the extracted results to a

fairly accurate determination of the authentic weight and sizes of the separate denominations

minted for each ruler.

This database could be useful for some future studies related to the economical, cultural

and political history of Anchialos during the Roman era.

The metric data of the processed copies is arranged in comparative tables for each

denomination.
