Metric Terms and Meanings

Systems InternationalUsed through out the world so it’s a

system used internationally

What the heck is SI?

Masswww.library.thinkquest.org

Used to demonstrate “HOW MUCH”

In the science lab we use a triple beam balance

Weight is not mass- weight is the force of gravity pushing down on you or the object

SI for Mass

kiloGram=k g

1 gram is the same as 1mL

1000g= 1 kilogram

You measure small things in grams and large things in kilograms

A mouse would be 200 grams and not 200kg or he could sit on the school!!

Mass Equilavents

1000 g = 1 kilogram kg 1000

1/1000g = 1 milligram mg .001

1/100g=1 centigram cg .01

So your one piece of hair would be .oo1g in mass

Your book bag would be 1000g=1kg

Volume of a solid

You sometimes cannot mass an object so you still have to know how much space it takes up..this is called VOLUMEHow much space a solid object takes up is easy---use the formula for areaA=length x width but it takes up air space so use V=lengthxwidthxheight

Volume of a Liquid

Liquids like water take up space so they have VOLUME so we use the common measurement for LIQUID VOLUME AS LITER with the symbol as L

You use the beaker or graduated cylinder to measure the liquid.

Volume of a Liquid cont.

Read the lowest part of the liquid called the meniscus

Volume of a rock (an irregular object)

You will need to use an overflow canCannot use these

Measure the volume using L

1 liter = 1000mL

1 mL is 1/1000th of a L

1 cL is 1/100th of a L

Metric Unit for Length

A meter is about the length of your arm from your nose to your middle finger.

A meter measure length—from one point to another

A meterstick measures meters.

Meter parts

One meter= 100 centimeters

One meter =1000 millimeters

Thousand meters=one kilometer

Metric review for quiz

1. Mass is the amount of ______ something has.

2. Gram measures __________

3. Formula for volume of a solid is_____

4. The basic unit of volume is _______

5. The amount of space something takes up is__________

6. One meter = __________ centimeters

7. Which unit of measurement would you use to measure?

8. Length of an ant

9. Mass of a postage stamp

10. Volume of a large jug of milk

11. Mass of a truck

12. Calculate the volume of block: 4 cm L, 2 cm w, 1.3 cm High

Density

Density = Mass(g)/Volume (mL)

Density of water is 1g/ml so if something floats it has a density less than one

If something sinks, it has a density grater than one.

Density review

You mass the object and get the

mass in gramsYou get the volume one of two ways:

Liquid is mL and volume of a solid is cm3

Density = mass( grams)/volume (mL or cm3)

> 1.0g/ml it sinks

< 1.0 g/cm3 it floats
