For more than 60 years, NORKA has developed and manufactured luminaires for use in extreme conditions.

NORKA delivers customised solutions for the most diverse lighting requirements, with products that are always optimally adjusted to the usage conditions. In doing so, we focus on quality, functionality and a long service life.

Nowadays, basic conditions such as markets, technology and the world as a whole are changing ever more quickly. In order to survive in this situation, these changes must be reflected in constantly updated products that are in tune with market requirements.

Whilst the development history of fluorescent lamps goes back around one hundred years, we have now reached a certain saturation point in terms of development. In contrast, the unstoppable rise of LEDs has just begun. METIS luminaires use LED technology and benefit from all of its associated advantages. The luminaire design is specially tailored to the requirements of the LED lamp.

In this brochure, the special features and technologies that make the METIS luminaire so special are differentiated. Special developments – such as XENA® lighting technology – are explained clearly. Overview pages containing sample applications give planners an introduction into the topic of efficient industrial lighting.

This brochure is intended to give you ideas about suitable documents, and also to give you the relevant data for the planning phase.

All NORKA products can be found under www.norka.de.

METIS combines the general advantages of LEDs with the NORKA requirements for a long service life and sophisticated lighting technology.

The luminaire lengths and lumen values achieved correspond to similar luminaires with T8 lamps (18 W/36 W/58 W). Reflector tubes are ideal for use in lighting systems where a long service life is required (due to complex maintenance work) or where instant light is necessary (in the event of faults).

with a swivel angle of 110°, the luminaire positions can already be defined during the planning phase for simple mounting.

Luminaires are usually electrically connected using plug-in terminals or screw terminals. The luminaire housing has to be opened to do this. Extreme care is required here, meaning the process is time-consuming. The cables have to be pre-assembled, then threaded through the cable gland into the device and finally positioned on the connection terminals inside the housing. This process must be carried out with extreme care and precision in order to ensure leak-tightness – especially on luminaires with high Ip ratings.

luCOn ® measurably increases the electrical connection speed. This means that the luminaire housing no longer has to be opened at any point. The internal wiring is protected against contact and fed outwards through the luminaire connection (this is sealed dust-tight for transportation). The electrical contact is made from the outside without tools based on

the simple principles of insulation displacement connection technology. The screw connection, strain relief, gaskets and conductor are all integrated in a single component – the union nut. This saves a lot of time compared to all other standard connection methods.

the contact point ensures a safe and reliable long-term connection. The conductor is pressed into a defined cutting zone, whereby the conductor insulation is displaced up to the target position on the way to the cutting slot. The generated contact pressure between the cutting blade and conductor ensures a permanent connection. The strain relief is generated automatically by tightening the union nut. Special gaskets protect against dust and moisture. The nut is locked into place in its end position for additional mechanical safety. The plug can be disconnected just as easily by following the process in reverse,

meaning the connection can be opened and closed repeatedly.

the simple, quick handling greatly reduces wiring times. Time savings of up to 80% are possible using the LuCON ® luminaire connection system. Expansions can be implemented quickly and easily using pluggable electrical connectors. Thanks to its high Ip rating, the LuCON ® luminaire connection system can also be used in extremely dirty conditions.

For decades, NORKA has succeeded in combining high lighting technology requirements and high protection ratings. Based on more than 60 years of experience, NORKA luminaires stand for reliability and safety in harsh conditions.

Long-term studies of lighting systems in industrial production areas are used when developing NORKA luminaires.

Findings made on the effect of dirt and loads on the luminaires are then taken into account when producing new NORKA luminaires. Environmental influences and the specific lamp properties are also considered here.

NORKA luminaires are characterised by their high functionality and ease of maintenance.

This calculation shows the comparison between the METIS m1500 luminaire with 6 x 10 w LED and an approximately 20-year-old lighting system with polymer luminaire (Ip65 protection rating) and protected lighting technology with 1 x T8 58 W / LLB configuration.

METIS can be used both as a one-to-one replacement for luminaires with T8 lamps and as a new installation. In both cases, METIS offers a long-term cost-effective solution.

40 % of annual energy costs are saved directly from the first day onwards, meaning that the METIS solution will have

paid for itself through its reduced energy consumption after just four years. The maintenance intervals are doubled.

When used correctly at the specified maximum ambient temperature for the LED luminaire, NORKA guarantees an operating life of at least 50,000 hours.

23www.norka.de

InFOrMatIOn abOut COMparatIve CalCulatIOns

In EuLuMDAT format (ldt.), the lamp power is rounded to integer values. The lamp luminous flux, on the other hand, is specified precisely to 1 lm. With efficiencies of 100 lm/W or more, precision to 0.01 w would be desirable (equivalent to one lumen with an efficiency of 100 lm/W). For light cal-culations, the facts as described above lead to a distortion of efficiency values. The light calculations presented show exact values for the lamp power and system power.

For the sake of simplicity and clarity, NORKA uses heavily rounded values for performance ratings in product overview tables.

The higher maintenance factor for LED solutions results from the assumption that the luminaire is operated on average at about 20 °C below the maximum permissible ambient temperature. This has a positive effect on LED degradation and the failure rate. with LEDs, it is assumed that the lifetime is equal to the useful life, i.e. that effectively no maintenance takes place.

To be able to compare this to a fluorescent lamp installation, the calculations there take into account that failed fluores-cent lamps are not replaced.

NORKA luminaires can be equipped with DALI-compatible transformers for conventional lamps and LEDs.It is then possible to integrate luminaires with high Ip ratings into modern light management systems and benefit from all of the advantages associated with using intelligent transformers in difficult conditions.

yOur InstallatIOn beneFItsSimplified installationSupply and control wires can be laid together in the same cable. wiring can be made in series, with star-shaped wiring or as a mixture.

no polarityDue to the two digital bus lines, the polarity (+/-) of the DALI control lines does not have to be taken into account.

no interruptions in power supplySwitching on and off is made through the bus line, meaning the power supply does not have to be interrupted.

stable dimming functionAll luminaires receive the same interference-resistant digital signal, and thus the same dimming value. The logarithmic dim curve is adjusted to the human eye.

yOur aDvantaGes In OperatIOnFlexibility through groupinggroup allocation can be parameterised, and is not made through the wiring.A DALI transformer can belong to several groups. This high level of flexibility compared to non-addressable systems significantly reduces the time required for wiring. The lighting scene values are stored in the DALI transformer.64 addresses, 16 groups and 16 lighting scenes are possible in a circuit.

status feedbackStatus feedback can be given by the DALI transformers. This means that information (e.g. on operating states) can be transferred directly to a higher-level system.

with the DALI-compatible NORKA transformers for LED luminaires, complex room and corridor controls with a large number of lighting groups and scenes can be realised in a range of different working areas. After making a prior analysis of the building use, DALI-compatible luminaires not only increase the comfort of the lighting system in operation or maintenance – they also contribute to additional energy savings thanks to practical dimming and switching.

OptIMuM enerGy useSignificant savings can be achieved by using lighting systems with presence detection. If these control systems are used in combination with daylight detection, then energy savings of up to 80% can be reached. presence detectors can be adjusted flexibly to individual requirements in light management systems and are widely used in many

industrial applications, such as: - Industrial halls- warehouse halls- Cold stores- underpasses- Staircases and corridors- underground car parks and multi-

storey car parks

COMFOrt anD saFetyControlled lighting systems offer comfort and safety – a key advantage compared to standard options. Dimming to a low light is what brings additional value – not switching off completely. This is because light (even at low levels) gives a sense of safety as it remains possible to see your surroundings. An alternative to this is to switch off the lighting completely when a basic light level or a specified waiting period is reached. This function is particularly practical in rooms that are not exposed to daylight.

the perFeCt COMbInatIOnyou can switch as many motion detectors and luminaires in parallel as you wish. This gives the opportunity of fully lighting long corridors or wide spaces such as underground car parks, for example.

applICatIOnsIn staircases and long corridors with various entry points, a perfect combination of multiple motion detectors highlights the potential of individual light control – making sudden darkness a thing of the past.

In underground car parks and lobbies, dimmed lighting creates a sense of safety and a pleasant atmosphere – and all over a wide area.

The “Round the clock” dimming function offers improved energy efficiency and increased safety in subways and railway stations with average traffic.
