A HUGE thank you to all who give each month to our collection of non-perishable
items for the Asotin County Food Bank. This church generously gave 2,062 lbs. in
2015!!! This figure does not include all of the produce that was
given from the Church Garden.
Please join us for our General Meeting Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. We will have our annual
pledge service and have fun making Valentines for shut in’s and family members If you
are unable to attend, please ask Tana Truscott for a pledge card. Your gift is important for
UMW to keep mission alive in our community and world. Thank you.
Invitation from the UMW
The Finance Committee for this church has organized a spaghetti
dinner with salad, bread, and a scoop of ice cream for dessert.
It will be held Saturday, February 27, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the
Fellowship Hall. The cost will be $10.00 a person with children
under 6 yrs. old dining free.
As an added attraction, there will be a
HOMEMADE dessert auction from 5:00-
6:00 p.m. Two homemade desserts will
be auctioned off approximately every ten
minutes. The desserts will be on display
before the auction begins. There will be such a mouthwatering
variety that you will not be able to resist making your best bid!
This is one of our Finance Committee’s fundraisers and the pro-
ceeds from this benefit our church’s general fund. Please help us
help our church and support this fundraiser.

Lent is a unique season in the church calendar. It is 40 days of preparing for Easter—
resurrection. It begins on Ash Wednesday, and it culminates on Holy Saturday, the day
before Resurrection Sunday. It marks a time of humility, repentance, self-denial, and
soul searching as one draws closer to the passion of Christ.
Typically, when people observe Lent they give up something for those 40 days, or
“fast” from something. Some popular fasts for Lent include: giving up chocolate, soda,
sugar, television, or social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.).
Along with other people, I will be giving up something/fasting from something during
Lent. But while I do that, I want to acknowledge something—that if we’re not careful
about it, practicing Lent can become just a religious observance for the sake of religious
observance. When that happens, the practice becomes something hollow, a show of
righteousness without all of the real depth of righteousness.
It basically becomes religion gone bad, as pastor and author Eugene Cho describes it:
“Anything that produces rituals, expressions, [and] practices… without ultimately invit-
ing us to a deeper understanding and worship of the Living God leads us to religion
gone bad.”
Isaiah 58 talks about fasting that God is not pleased with, because it is fasting that caters
to our own eyes, flesh, and basically to please ourselves, to make ourselves look good.
I want to encourage you all, then, to really think about Lent and what you might fast
from or give up.
Ask yourself this question:
In what way does giving this thing up make me more mindful of Christ and the
Kingdom of God?
Instead of thinking “I am giving up something,” think of it as “I am giving IN and giving
TO something.” In other words, Lent is a time to GIVE YOURSELF more fully to Jesus
and the Kingdom of God. What will you give up, and what will you GAIN in its place?
A sense of freedom for sure to give yourself to God.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Cody Stauffer

There are sign-up sheets up on the foyer bulletin board for liturgists and
serving communion. If you sign up to be liturgist for a month you will read
the scripture, the call to worship, help serve communion, and announce the
songs. This is a great way to help lead worship with everything you need to
do written out for you ahead of time. As a communion server you help serve
communion for the month you sign up. This is a very important part of worship as we
remember that we are all of one bread, and one body. If you have any questions please ask
Pastor Cody.
