March 2017 Calendar…………...… 10

I’ve been thinking a lot about health these past few months. Springtime reminds me of increased activity and better physical health. I’ve also spent time listening to lay people and preachers about spiritual health. My weekend at the Walk to Emmaus brought both together, again.

Spiritual health is what I want to talk about today. This is the beginning of April, a season to celebrate new life. It’s no wonder that God created seasons such as this to demonstrate how inter-related the physical part of our world is with the spiritual. We celebrate new life in the created order at the same time we celebrate new life through Easter’s resurrection.

This world is a troubled world. As human beings we are experiencing the consequences of choices that our ancestors have made. Those consequences may be good or bad, depending on what they are. That’s because God gave us the ability to make choices. So we ran with it and made choices, some better than others. We continue to make choices based on the best knowledge we have at any given moment.

You are reading this right now by choice. I am writing it by choice. No one made us do it. Similarly, all the other choices have been ours to make as well. No one can blame another for what we have chosen to do over the course of our lifetimes. Needless to say, the choices we make in our lives have not all been perfect, and sometimes far from perfect. We’ve come to the understanding that we can’t do everything right, no matter how hard we try.

Now here’s the next best part about our predicament… God created something called forgiveness, a way to come into a healthy relationship with our family, our friends and neighbors, and with God! Good relation- ships are a way to ensure a healthy spirituality as well.

When something gets between us and our relationship with God or our neighbor, in the church we call that ‘sin.’ That’s an old word and some- times one that’s misused. What has been translated from the Greek as

‘sin’ is simply missing the mark. All of us miss the mark, sometimes occasionally and some-times more often. We miss the mark in our thoughts and actions when we let stuff get in the way of our relationships with God and our neighbors.

That’s where forgiveness comes in. God forgives us because God is love and shares an abundance of grace with us. We forgive each other because God showed us how. We forgive our friends and our families, just as God did for us, because we love them.

No matter what choices we have made in life, God loves us and will always love us. No matter what choices we make in life from now on, God still wants a relationship with us, and is entirely pleased when we grow within that relationship. No matter what choices we make in life, God offers the gift of forgiveness. That’s the basis of real spiritual health. That’s the message of Easter’s resurrection. God loves each of us even when we feel unlovable. Whether we accept God’s offer is a choice He gave us.

May God bless you as we enter this time of new life and health!

On the third day, the friends of Christ coming at daybreak . . . found the grave empty and the stone

rolled away. In varying ways they realized the new wonder; but even they hardly realized that the

world had died in the night. What they were looking at was the first day of a new creation,

with a new heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance of the gardener,

God walked again in the garden, in the cool not of the evening but of the dawn. - G.K. Chesterton

During the February 26th youth meeting, Lacey Pavlak and Ben Ray recorded a “green screen” video for the scriptures. We presented them during the next two Sundays.

The next youth meeting was held on Friday March 17th. The youth assisted in setting up for the dinner and auction to be held the next day. This group made a big difference in the set up. A BIG THANKS to all the youth that showed up to help.

At the Auction on the 18th, the kids had a great time with their own silent auction. This was a way to redeem the Bible Bucks that they had accumulated through participation in church activities and services. It was fun to watch the kids put their bids down on various items, then to see how they kept checking to see if their bid was still the last one.

The last youth meeting for March was held on March 26th. The kids made soft pretzels and heard a lesson that relates the pretzels with the season of Lent and prayer.

Special/Noisy offerings for our covenant partner church,

T-3 UMC in Maputo, Mozambique: Apr. 2nd & 9th

The Mozambique Initiative is a ministry of the United Methodist Missouri Conference, and partners churches, groups, and individuals with congregations and districts of the UMC in Mozambique, which is one of the poorest and most under-developed countries in the world. We have a covenant partnership with T-3 UMC in Maputo, Mozambique.

Through the Mozambique Initiative, we have an ongoing covenant with the congregation of T-3 UMC. We mutually support one another through prayer, and we also support them through a financial commitment of at least $990, most of which goes to their pastor’s salary. We will receive our Special/Noisy Offering for T-3 on the Sundays of April 2nd and 9th.

Craig Stevenson, Associate Director of the Mozambique Initiative, will join us on April 2nd to give the message and to share about the latest happenings within the Mozambique Initiative. He has traveled there recently, so this should be a very timely and informative

presentation. Learn more at the

website: www.mzinitiative.com.

Financial Stewardship Report

The Church’s approved budget for 2017 is approximately $230,000. In order to meet that budget, our tithes and offerings need to average about $19,200 per month. As mentioned last month, we were about $4,800 short for January. The good news is, income for February was where it needed to be, and in fact was about $800 above budget, so THANK YOU and praise the Lord for that.

The January-February budget summary report is shown below (if you would like to see a more detailed report, copies are available in the church office.) We now have the ability to receive payments online if that is more convenient than cash or checks. Click on “Ways to Give” at the top of the Church’s webpage, www.centraliaumc.org. There are also informational cards in the pew backs.

As you can see below, we’re still about $4,000 short for the year. However, CUMC is growing, and this is a great joy! With growth comes growing pains, but we’ve got to keep the “big picture” in mind and remember that our future is looking very bright. Please continue to prayerfully consider your financial giving so that we continue the good work we’re doing as the hands and feet of Jesus in our community and world.

Centralia United Methodist Church,

Thank you for all the prayers, well wishes, cards and contributions from members of this church.

I feel so blessed by the love shown to me. Also the cooperation with the substitute teachers filling in for me at the Playschool is greatly appreciated.

I hope to be mobile enough to make an occasional visit to the classroom before the end of our school year!

Love, Becky Coulter

They love to travel, and Shelbia enjoys sewing and cooking. Gary & Shelbia first came to CUMC at Cindy’s invitation (way to go, Cindy!). They officially joined in November 2016, when Shelbia was also baptized into the faith. They usually attend our 8:30am service.

Transfer of Membership

Allison Estey Bohlmeyer, who grew up in Centralia UMC, officially transferred her membership and joined Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where her husband Jesse is a member, on February 26, 2017. We commend her into the Christian care and fellowship of the Holy Spirit Catholic congregation, and wish the family all the best!

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS:

Gary & Shelbia previously lived and worked in Independence, Missouri, and had moved to Columbia in 2002. Prior to retirement, Gary was a truck driver, and Shelbia was the L.I.H.T.C. (Low Income Housing Tax Credits) Administrator for the Missouri Housing Development Commission in Kansas City for 9 years.

They have been in Centralia about 2 1/2 year now, moving to be closer to daughter Cindy Cummins (CUMC member who lives here in Centralia), and son Dan, who lives in Mexico. They have four grand-children (grown) and six great-grandchildren, with another expected in August.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS:

Debbie shares that she and Duane moved to Centralia from Fenton, Missouri in July 1996. Duane was a District Manager with Auto Zone at the time, and after a lot of house- hunting in mid-Missouri, Centralia just felt “right.”

They were looking for a church home and felt very comfortable with people they met, especially after Susanna began 4-H cake decorating classes with Laura Pavlak in 2015 (which just happens to meet in the CUMC building and includes some other CUMC families, and goes to show, the Lord does indeed work in mysterious ways!)

Debbie officially joined CUMC in November 2016 by Profession of Faith, and Susanna was baptized at the same time, thus becoming a Preparatory

Member. Duane is a Catholic, so although not “official,” we welcome him into our church family too.
