PERIODIC TABLE
METALS• Good conductors of heat and electricity
• All, but Mercury (Hg), are solid at room temperature
• Metals are located to the left of the staircase
• Group 2 metals
• Shiny
• Ductile
• Malleable
• Combine readily with other elements
• Group 1 metals
• Most reactive of all metals
• Don’t occur in nature in their element form
METALS
Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals
• Lanthanide Series – Elements 57-71
• Actinide Series – Elements 89-103
• Groups 3-12
• Most familiar metals because they often occur in nature uncombined with other substances
Transition Metals Rare Earth Metals
NONMETALS
• Elements that are usually gases or brittle solids at
room temperature
• Most can form ionic & covalent compounds
• Located to the right of the staircase
NOBLE GASES• Group 18 elements
• Exist as isolated atoms
• They are all stable because their outer energy levels (shells) are full
METALLOIDS• Elements that make up the stair steps
• These elements have both metallic & non-metallic properties
• Used in technology (cell phones, computers, microchips, etc.)
• Metalloids are part of the mixed groups which contain metals, non-metals, and metalloids
• Mixed groups are Groups 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17
