A ROBUST LINE OF AUTOMOTIVE PIGMENTS THAT DRIVE OTHERS TO ENVY
For over 40 years, we have been committed to the development and supply
of innovative aluminium effect pigments to the automotive industry. In fact,
in 1965 the Silberline team unlocked the secret of acid staining resistant
aluminium pigments. This development enabled automotive coatings
manufacturers to create metallic effects that were able to withstand
environmental conditions, solving a critical issue that had plagued the
automotive industry for years.
Today, as a result of our advanced manufacturing and best-in-class
research and development, we have a robust line of automotive pigments
including our SPARKLE SILVER®, SPARKLE SILVER® Premier, SILVER
STAR®, SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA®, and PLATINUM SILVER® series. These
pigments continue to inspire and provide automotive industry stylists and
coatings formulators with a wide range of brighter and more dazzling
metallic effects. Our TUFFLAKE® products are well-respected in the industry
for their outstanding degradation resistance in automotive OEM systems.
In addition to providing aluminium pigments in the traditional paste form,
we provide a variety of grades as surface treated SILBERCOTE® products
for outstanding performance in a variety of applications. For waterborne
coatings, we’ve developed two robust chemistries for aluminium corrosion
control. SILBERCOTE AQ inhibition technology and AQUA PASTE®
passivation protection offer a wide range of metallic effect pigments
suitable for waterborne applications. We also manufacture our own Vacuum
Metallised Flake pigments—our STARBRITE® and HYDROSTAR® products
offer some of the highest reflectivity and distinctness of image (DOI) of any
Vacuum Metallised Flake pigment on the market today.
The development of new products for automotive color stylists is a key
driver at Silberline. The new TUFFLAKE® Premier family offers improved
aesthetics versus TUFFLAKE with the same outstanding degradation
resistance. Our SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA® Liquid Metal pigments deliver the
look and appearance of VMF with the formulation and application benefits
of conventional aluminium paste. The new SPARKLE SILVER® X-treme 20
pigment is the brightest of our pigments in the 18-20 micron particle size
range with the most extreme flop effect.
METALLIC EFFECT PIGMENTS FOR AUTOMOTIVE COATINGSSPARKLE SILVERAs metallic appearances grew in popularity as a coating for automobiles,
designers longed to create brighter and more dazzling colours. We paved
the way with the development of our SPARKLE SILVER series of aluminium
pigments. Armed with technology to polish aluminium flakes for a brighter
appearance, we gave colour designers the aesthetics they craved in bold
new polychromatic effects. The fact that more SPARKLE SILVER pigments
are formulated into automotive metallic coatings than any other grade
throughout the world is testament to the longevity and importance of
this technology.
SPARKLE SILVER PremierThroughout the 1990’s, the colour palette trend was toward finer and
brighter metallic effects. Though fineness and brightness trend in opposite
directions when developing aluminium pigments, we engineered the flakes
in SPARKLE SILVER Premier pigments to have more uniform surfaces,
sharper edges and controlled particle size distribution. This unique silver
dollar technology broke the fineness or brightness paradigm and gave
designers whiter, brighter and cleaner polychromatic effects.
SILVER STARManufactured to the highest quality standards, SILVER STAR was expressly
designed to meet our customers demand for the highest quality aluminium
pigments for automotive coatings. The pigment’s advanced silver dollar
technology yields exceptional brilliance, expansive metallic travel and very
smooth patina. In addition, SILVER STAR pigments are optimised for Bell
application where they exhibit improved pigment orientation. They offer
excellent performance in automotive OEM finishes and are ideal for use in
refinish as well as automotive interior coatings, wheel coatings, parts
and accessories.
SPARKLE SILVER ULTRAOur SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA grades are very bright, silver dollar pigments,
offering a very smooth patina and narrow particle size distribution, allowing
the formulator to create brilliant masstones or clean, vibrant colours.
SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA grades are designed for the stylist to raise the bar
in terms of metallic effects and creativity.
NEW PRODUCT! SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA Liquid MetalProducing a brilliant sheen with no visible particles, these pigments provide
the appearance of pure metals such as brushed aluminium, polished steel
or anodized aluminium. SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA Liquid Metal pigments
deliver a powerful one-two punch—the look and appearance of Vacuum
Metallised Flake (VMF) with the application benefits of conventional
aluminium pastes. SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA Liquid Metal pigments offer a
bright, highly-polished reflective surface with little or no grain, narrow particle
size distribution (PSD) and smooth patina. They are ideal for automotive
interiors, wheel coatings, trim and accessories, and specialty applications.
PLATINUM SILVERPLATINUM SILVER pigments are silver dollar type pigments offering a highly-
polished appearance with exceptional brightness, excellent opacity, a high
flop index, and a more silky smooth patina. These aluminium pigments
provide a wide range of metallic effects from bright silver to chromatic.
TUFFLAKETechnology never stands still, and this is true in automotive coatings
application technologies. Newer paint application systems subject coatings
containing aluminium pigments to tremendous shear forces. These
mechanical forces can have the tendency of dulling the metallic appearance
of the final coating by breaking and deforming the individual aluminium
flakes. Our TUFFLAKE line of circulation-resistant pigments is specifically
engineered to withstand these mechanical forces and maintain their
targeted appearance.
NEW PRODUCT! TUFFLAKE PremierTUFFLAKE Premier is the next generation of TUFFLAKE pigments from
Silberline. The overall brightness, metallic travel, degradation resistance,
smooth patina, and improved Bell orientation makes TUFFLAKE Premier
ideal for use in automotive OEM applications. When compared with similar
particle size TUFFLAKE pigments, TUFFLAKE Premier exhibits excellent
degradation resistance for automotive OEM, improved orientation
and brighter face with deeper travel in both Bell and air-assisted
siphon applications.

NEW PRODUCT! SPARKLE SILVER X-tremeSPARKLE SILVER X-treme special effect aluminium pigments provide
intense effects including dazzling sparkle and deep metallic travel.
Manufactured to the highest quality standards, SPARKLE SILVER X-treme
pigments allow for clean tint bases that boost chromatic effect. Their
X-treme metallic travel generates richness in metallic reflection across a
wide range of viewing angles, making SPARKLE SILVER X-treme ideal for
distinctive automotive finishes.
SPARKLE SILVER X-treme pigments will make your products stand out and
are also ideal effects for coatings on X-treme sports equipment such as
snowboards, skateboards, surfboards, skis, and two-wheelers.
METALLIC EFFECT PIGMENTS FOR AUTOMOTIVE PARTS AND ACCESSORIESSILBERCOTE X, Y AND ZThese specialty grades are bright, surface-treated, nonleafing aluminium
pigments. The treatment on the aluminium flake may create a coating
which is less conductive in an electrostatic field. The surface treatment
also improves spray characteristics and enhances acid and alkali staining
resistance. These performance characteristics provide superior performance
for a variety of applications including automotive parts and accessories.
METALLIC EFFECT PIGMENTS FOR AQUEOUS COATINGSPRE-PASSIVATED ALUMINIUM PIGMENTSAs the market for waterborne automotive coatings continues to grow
worldwide, so has our investment in pre-passivated technologies for
aluminium pigments. We have developed several unique passivation
technologies, each with a level of sophistication and performance that is
tailored to meet current requirements for automotive OEM and refinish
coatings. Our waterborne coatings solutions are based on technologically
advanced corrosion controlled systems.
Various chemistries have been developed to optimise their interaction
with the aluminium flake surface, imparting outstanding performance
while maintaining optimum aesthetics. We can apply our corrosion control
chemistries to any traditional aluminium effect pigment in our product
line resulting in a wide range of metallic effects. Each lot of passivated
aluminium pigment produced is tested and approved for gassing stability
prior to shipment, thus assuring that our SILBERCOTE AQ and AQUA PASTE
products will be stable in a waterborne paint system.
SILBERCOTE AQThe SILBERCOTE AQ family of inhibited aluminium pigments is designed for
use in automotive OEM and refinish waterborne coatings systems. These
products are easily dispersed in water and have excellent adhesion. The
SILBERCOTE AQ technology can be applied to both cornflake and silver
dollar type pigments resulting in a wide range of metallic effects. Using
advanced techniques, silica is deposited onto the surface of the aluminium
flake producing a pigment with excellent gassing resistance and stability
in waterborne formulations. The silica treatment has also been proven to
enhance circulation stability by maintaining the aluminium flake integrity
under the shear forces typically associated with recirculation of paints.
SILBERCOTE AQ inhibited aluminium pigments are suitable for both metal
and plastic coating applications.
SILBERCOTE AQ STARSilberline’s SILBERCOTE AQ Star inhibited aluminium pigments are designed
for use in automotive OEM and refinish waterborne coatings systems. Using
advanced techniques, silica is deposited onto the surface of the aluminium
flake producing a family of pigments with excellent gassing resistance
and stability in a range of dazzling metallic effects. SILBERCOTE AQ Star
products employ Silberline’s advanced “silver dollar” pigment technology
and offer exceptional brilliance, expansive metallic travel and very smooth
patina in waterborne coatings. In addition they offer excellent performance
and degradation resistance in automotive OEM and are suitable for use in
automotive interior coatings, wheel coatings, parts and accessories.
AQUA PASTEThe AQUA PASTE series of passivated aluminium pigments is
designed for use in automotive OEM and refinish waterborne coatings
systems. Our AQUA PASTE inorganic passivation technology is applicable
to traditional cornflake as well as silver dollar type aluminium flakes and is
not limited by particle size. Like our SILBERCOTE AQ products, AQUA PASTE
passivated aluminium pigments are easy to disperse and offer excellent
gassing resistance and stability.
VACUUM METALLISED EFFECT PIGMENTSSTARBRITEAutomotive stylists and coatings formulators continue to look for new and
exciting special effect pigments to deliver novel aesthetics. Current styling
trends in the automotive industry favour the flash and eye catching appeal
of brushed metallic and liquid metal effects. Our STARBRITE Vacuum
Metallised Flake is a platelet-like aluminium pigment with exceptionally high
surface area and aspect ratio. STARBRITE’s unique characteristics enable
the formulator to achieve a smooth mirror-like metallic effect with a highly
reflective brilliant finish.
HYDROSTAROur HYDROSTAR Vacuum Metallised Flake pigments are supplied in
passivated form, and like STARBRITE pigments, HYDROSTAR Vacuum
Metallised Flake pigments enable smooth, mirror-like metallic effects in
waterborne coating applications.
4Product recommended for waterborne applications.
Aesthetics and Degradation Organisation Based on Family
Degradation resistant aluminium pigments provide consistent metallic appearances in automotive coatings that are subjected to the shearing forces associated with OEM recirculation systems. By carefully selecting the proper raw materials and controlling the particle size, new grades were developed that demonstrate dramatic improvements in resistance to circulation damage.
This graphic details the effect of median particle size on the brightness and degradation resistance properties among our more sophisticated families of effect pigments. Head on Brightness (HOB), or amount of colourless light reflected at the near specular L*15 angle, increases with increasing D50 in any particular product family.
BEST-IN-CLASS PRODUCTS THAT DELIVER BRIGHTNESS AND DAZZLING EFFECTThrough advanced manufacturing technologies, our aluminium
pigments provide automotive stylists and coatings formulators
with brighter and more dazzling metallic effects as well as excellent
degradation resistance. Aluminium effect pigments are plate-like
particles with directional light reflectance and/or scattering
characteristics. They present variation in lightness (colourless
reflection) or saturation (chroma) with changes in the viewing angle.
The aesthetic effect achieved by an automotive coating depends in
part on the pigment particle size, pigment shape, and the degree
and method of polishing the flake—all of which contribute to the
coating’s brightness, sparkle and metallic travel. Following are
graphs showing these contributing characteristics for our SPARKLE
SILVER Premier, SILVER STAR, SPARKLE SILVER ULTRA, PLATINUM
SILVER, TUFFLAKE and TUFFLAKE Premier series of pigments.
Please note that all of the information used for comparing aluminium
pigments was generated from coatings applied over metal utilizing
Bell electrostatic equipment with dual-axes control capabilities.

* Patina is an attribute of aluminium pigments described as the smoothness or silkiness (fineness) of the pigment grain. It is a visually subjective comparative term that is used to express the appearance of coatings and described by expression such as coarse, grainy, medium, fine, smooth and silky.
6
When we speak of particle size, we typically mean the average (median) diameter of the flakes, expressed as the D(50). For most new automotive coating applications, the D(50) usually falls within the range of 8–25 microns. Generally speaking, the smaller particles yield better hiding, appearance, and improved Distinctness of Image (DOI). The larger particles yield higher sparkle and brightness.
The Particle Size Distribution (PSD) is equally as important as the average particle size. The PSD is defined as the range in particle sizes from the smallest to the largest. The PSD is usually a Gaussian curve; however, special processes may yield a narrower range or a translated distribution.
As a rule, a grade that has a broad distribution will consist of both more fine and large flakes. A grade with more fines will have improved opacity but will be darker on the face angles and lighter on the flop angles. A grade that has a narrower or more controlled distribution will appear brighter on the face and darker or cleaner on the flop angles. This clean appearance allows for better chromatic colour development in tint bases.
The brightness of these effect pigments can be described as lighter, brighter, greyer and darker, all of which are related to particle size and particle size distribution. The lightness is measured by integrating
the amount of colourless light reflected back from the surface of the flakes, using a reflectometer or goniospectrophotometer, and given a numeric value L* on the L*a*b* colour scale.
Organisation by Brightness L* Value at 15 Degrees
Organisation Based on Particle Size
The graph ranks the products in order of greatest to least Flop Index and also includes the corresponding Metallic Travel for each grade.
Coatings containing aluminium pigments have the ability to reflect varying intensities of light with changes in observation angles. Generally speaking, the observational angles are grouped into three categories: face (near specular), mid specular (or diffuse), and flop (far specular) and correlate to the instrumental viewing angles on a goniospectrophotometer as follows:
Near specular 15 or 25 degrees Mid specular 45 degrees Far specular 75 or 110 degrees
(Instrumental angles are determined by reference to the specular angle which is 45 degrees from normal.)
Metallic travel (T) is described as the difference in extent to which the face (also synonymous with HOB) appears a bright silver chroma when compared to the darker, gray flop. The mathematical expression uses absolute values in L*a*b* colour space and is defined by:
T = L*15 – L*110
The Flop Index (FI) is the measurement of the change in reflectance of a metallic colour as it is rotated through the range of viewing angles. A flop index of 0 indicates a solid colour, while a very high flop metallic basecoat colour may have a flop index of 15–17. Flop Index is mathematically defined by:
FI = 2.69 (L*15 – L*110)1.11 / (L*45)0.86
