    IntroductionBy Oliver Jia

Video games have become much more than just forms of interactive

entertainment. They have become permanently enrooted into our culture as an important

form of media. FromMario to The Legend of Zelda toHalo, the industry is a thriving

business that shows no signs of slowing down. Thousands of video games have come and

gone, but only a select few have left a lasting impression on the video game industry as a

whole. One such franchise is theMetal Gearseries on which these stories are based

    upon.

Ever since its creation in 1987,Metal Gearhas become a critical success selling

over 31 million copies as of 2012. The originalMetal Geargames had been simple 8-bit

platformers on the MSX2 home computer system in Japan. At a time when games were

all about eliminating everything on the screen,Metal Gearwas a fresh new idea that

encouraged sneaking past the enemy undetected, rather than using blunt force. It was not

until 1998 however, when the series crowning gameMetal Gear Solidarrived on the

    PlayStation.

Metal Gear Solidand its later sequels set the bar for how a video game could tell

its narrative. The games told an in-depth story whichdealt with dark and brooding

themes such as nuclear holocaust, social engineering, censorship, memes, anti-war

messages, and more. Unlike most video games at the time, Metal Gear Solidfeatured

lengthy cinematic cut-scenes and professionally delivered voice acting to give the overall

gameplay experience a movie-like feel. When the first Metal Geargames came out, all of

this had never been done before and the line between games and cinema had been

    permanently blurred.

This revolutionary series is all thanks to Japanese game developer Hideo Kojima

whom I cannot thank enough for creating this series. These novelizations are my way of

showing my enjoyment and appreciation ofMetal Gear.

Metal Gear: The First Missions features two adaptations based on the first two

games in the series:Metal GearandMetal Gear 2: Solid Snake. If youve never played

any of theMetal Geargames before or are unfamiliar with the series, then do not worry.

Both stories are easy enough to get into and require no previous experience with the

games. In order forMetal Gear: The First Missions to be a faithful adaptation, Ive done

extensive research to make sure that the stories are as close to the games as possible. Ive

changed things, added things, removed things, and so on. I compare this work to Peter

JacksonsLord of the Rings trilogy. The original stories were by J.R.R. Tolkien, but the

movies are undoubtedly the work of Jacksons own storytelling.

I take no credit in being the original creator of these stories. That honor goes to

Mr. Hideo Kojima. Im simply a fan who wished to see Metal Gearleap from video

game console to page. It has taken me awhile to get this project off the ground, but I think

that all the work and planning has paid off. I hope you enjoyMetal Gear Saga. Thank

    you.

200 kilometers north of Galzburgh, South Africa. 1995.

The towering fortress of Outer Heaven stood in the bright moonlight. Cut away

from civilization, Outer Heaven was a large military compound divided into three main

buildings. An underwater sewer system flowed underground towards the fortress. Around

the middle of the passageway was a small inlet where the flow of the water slowed down

before moving on to the other buildings. The surface of the inlet was calm, with a gentle

current flowing through. It was about 5 meters deep. The water soon started to break, as a

single figure emerged from the depths. This mans name was Solid Snake.

Snake crawled out of the water and onto the surface. He was a tall man in his mid-

20s. His face was rugged, with gray stubble growing on his chin. Snake was wearing a

green camouflage sneaking suit with a large belt and pouch that could have held at least

fifteen weapons. Solid Snake, however, only had a transceiver, a handheld radar device,

and a small pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes on him. He had been told that it was

standard procedure, and that he couldnt be given any weapons. As he sat down to

catch a few deep breaths, his transceiver started to ring, signifying that he was getting a

call. It was from his commanding officer, Big Boss.

Big Boss speaking, Snake do you read me?

I read you Boss, Snake said in his low, growling voice. This is Solid Snake.

    Commencing Operation Intrude N313.

Big Boss was the leader of a military group called FOXHOUND. FOXHOUND

was a high-tech special force unit of the United States army. Big Boss had established the

organization back in the 70s and its primal uses were solo infiltrations, coping with local

revolutions, and the eradication of global terrorist activities, among other things.

In 1991, Snake was part of the 5th Special Forces group and participated in the

Gulf War. Earlier this year, Snake had become an official member of FOXHOUND. The

training process to become an official member was brutal. Both Snakes physical and

mental willpower were put to the test until they were both sharp as a needle. Big Boss

himself taught Snake until he was ready. To Snake, Big Boss was more then just a

commanding officer, he was his mentor and a father figure.

Big Boss was an old man his late 50s or early 60s. Snake didnt know his exact

age. He had an old withered face with gray hair and wore an eye patch on his right eye.

Despite his old age, Big Boss was considered by many to be The Greatest Soldier of the

20th Century. Big Boss was well respected among the soldiers of FOXHOUND. Every

time he walked by, the soldiers always saluted him. Despite Big Bosss title, Snake knew

very little about his past or his achievements. He had no idea how he lost his eye or even

what his real name was. Awhile ago, Snake had once asked Big Boss what it was. Big

Boss had simply said to him:

Im like you Snake; I have no real name or past.

That was the end of the subject, and Snake never asked again. Snake himself did

have a real name but few people knew it and he was rarely called by it. He was always

referred to as Solid Snake or just Snake. Like Big Bosss past, Snake knew very little

about his own. He had never known his parents and had no family. Various foster parents

took care of Snake until he was old enough to take care of himself.

Snake often joked that Big Boss looked like Sean Connery, but there was not one

time that Big Boss had called Snake junior. He was a no nonsense man with a strong

sense of honor and purpose who had little time for small talk or jokes. Big Boss did not

    10

like to repeat himself and seldom talked just for the sake of it. The old man had taught

Snake almost everything he knew from weapons to CQC (Close Quarters Combat).

    Awaiting mission briefing, sir.

Very well, Big Boss said. About two weeks ago, we received intelligence that

a large nuclear weapon of mass destruction was being built at the Outer Heaven fortress

in South Africa. To confirm our suspicions, we sent our best soldier, Gray Fox, to

    investigate.

Gray Fox? Isnt he the soldier that went on a top secret mission a few days ago

and never returned? Snake asked curiously.

The very same, Big Boss said grimly. Gray Fox was able to provide us with a

rough map of Outer Heaven as well as the locations of elevators, cameras, weapons,

supplies, and more through his radar. Unfortunately, he was soon discovered by the

enemy and we havent heard from him since. His last transmission contained only two

    words: Metal Gear.

    Metal Gear? Snake repeated.

Yes, Big Boss answered. We believe that Metal Gear is the name of the

weapon that the terrorists are constructing. The leader of the terrorists is a man named

    Colonel Vermon CaTaffy.

    Hmm, never heard of him.

Im surprised, Big Boss said. Hes wanted in seven countries and is notorious

for his sadistic cruelty. His crimes are countless, and if he was ever caught, he would

either serve life in prison or receive the death penalty. Anyways, your mission objectives

are to find Gray Fox if he is alive, and determine a way on how to destroy Metal Gear.

    11

How am I to find Gray Fox?

Before Foxs capture, he was able to come into contact with a resistance group

led by a man named Kyle Schneider. The resistance group had also infiltrated the

fortress, but are currently being held hostage by the terrorists. Find the hostages, and you

will be able to find Gray Fox. On your radar is a sonar map of the entire area. Your

position is represented by a red dot. Any foreign threats are white dots. If you are seen,

the enemy will use a jamming device to scramble your radar. This radar will be an

invaluable tool for this mission, so youll have to be careful. Through it, well be able to

receive a real-time feed of your progress and be able to warn you about any unforeseen

dangers. So always keep an eye on your radar. Did you get all that, Snake?

    Affirmative, Snake answered.

Remember, Snake, Big Boss said. This mission will be unlike anything youve

ever encountered before. Should you fail; the entire world could be in jeopardy.

Snake felt a slight shiver crawl down his spine, though he showed no emotion.

There was no room for mistakes on this mission.

Ill monitor your progress from here on out. Use frequency 120.85 for all further

    transmissions with me, and Snake?

    What?

Try to remember the basics of CQC, over.

Try to remember the basics of CQC, Snake thought. He always tells me that.

In fact, CQC was one of Big Bosss specialties.

CQC is your greatest weapon on the battlefield. Become a master of CQC, and

you become a master at battle, he always said.

With that, Snake turned off his transceiver and proceeded into Building 1 of Outer

Heaven. The first room turned out to be a large hanger with rows and rows of trucks

placed horizontally across the vast space. The transceiver rang again.

Snake, the area you are in right now is the main hanger of Building 1. The trucks

you see are filled with weapons and supplies that will aid you on your mission. Be

careful, though. If you are spotted by the enemy, they will send reinforcements to track

you down. Check your radar for their positions, over.

Snake checked his radar and found that there were four soldiers patrolling the

area. With the speed of a lion, he dived under one of the trucks and waited for the soldiers

to pass. An enemy soldier walked past where Snake was; unaware that he was under the

truck. When the soldier was out of range, Snake crawled out from under the vehicle and

    proceeded to search the trucks.

After several minutes of watching for enemies and stocking on supplies, Snake

quickly checked his inventory. Snake had managed to find a tranquilizer pistol, a Beretta

M92F handgun with a silencer, an Ingram MAC-11 submachine gun, a miniature sniper

rifle, hand grenades, smoke bombs, C4 plastic explosive, a silver pocket knife, a pair of

binoculars, additional ammunition, a gas mask, and several rations. All of these items

were able to fit onto Snakes sneaking suit, belt, and into his pouch with enough room to

store more items if necessary. Snakes transceiver rang again.

I see youve been able to stock up on supplies, Snake, Big Boss said mildly

impressed. To find the hostages location, youll have to interrogate one of the soldiers.

Isolate each soldier and take them out with your tranquilizer. It is important that you

  • 7/28/2019 Metal Gear the First Missions

    13

leave one of the soldiers conscious so youll be able to squeeze the location out of him,

    over.

I think Ive got something different in mind, Snake thought to himself.

From his radar, Snake could see one of the soldiers wandering off to the corner of

    the hanger.

Why is he abandoning his post?

Snake carefully walked to the enemys position from behind and saw that he was

smoking a cigarette. As the soldier was taking his smoke break, Snake took out his

tranquilizer gun and fired. It hit the soldier in the head, and he collapsed onto the floor

    unconscious.

Soon, the soldiers will realize one of there own is gone. When they come to

    investigate, Ill make my move.

Snake once again hid under a truck and waited for the enemies to come closer.

His radar showed that one of the soldiers was walking his way. Sure enough, the soldier

spotted his fallen comrade on the ground. He ran up to the body.

Men! the soldier yelled. Johnnys down! The other two soldiers in the area

quickly ran up to the scene.

Who did this to him? one of them asked as the three gathered around Johnnys

body. On closer examination, Snake could see that the soldiers were wearing camo

uniforms and also had black ski masks over their faces. Snake then threw one of his

smoke bombs on the floor which created a thick black smokescreen.

The soldiers started coughing. Snake darted up from under the truck and put his

CQC training to good use. First he threw one of the soldiers against the nearby wall. His

  • 7/28/2019 Metal Gear the First Missions

    14

skull hit the wall with a thud, and was instantly knocked unconscious. Next, he took the

nearby soldier by the arm and punched him with tremendous force in the abdomen. As

the soldier stopped and fell to the floor, Snake swiftly pulled out his tranquilizer and shot

him. He then replaced his gun with his knife and held the last soldier with the knife at his

neck. The whole fight lasted less than ten seconds.

Talk! Snake growled. Where are the hostages being kept?

Ill never talk! the soldier screamed.

Yes, you will! Snake yelled holding the knife closer. I can be very persuasive.

Alright! Alright! Just dont kill me! the soldier begged. The hostages are being

held on the second floor of this building. To get there, you have to take the elevator. Its

towards the right at the end of this hall.

Thats all I needed to know, Snake said satisfied. He then threw the frightened

soldier on the floor with the others and took him out with the tranquilizer. Snake called

    Big Boss.

Snake here, Ive managed to get the location.

Good work, Snake, Big Boss said. Your method was a bit unorthodox, but

effective all the same. Before you continue on, youll need a Level 1 Security Keycard to

ride the elevator. One of the soldiers should have the keycard, over.

Snake turned the transceiver off and searched the soldiers. Luckily, the man he

just interrogated had the keycard he needed. He also had a cigarette lighter. Snake then

decided to have a quick smoke before continuing on. He lit a cigarette and just as he held

it to his mouth, his transceiver started to ring again.

  • 7/28/2019 Metal Gear the First Missions

    15

Cigarettes again, Snake? Big Boss said in a disapproving voice. Theyre

hazardous to your health, you know.

Dont you smoke yourself, sir? Snake asked startled.

I used to, heavily in fact, but my lungs didnt agree. You should quit too, Snake.

Alright, alright, Snake said not really listening.

He turned the transceiver off, put his cigarettes away, and proceeded to his

destination. Before doing so however, he would have to hide the bodies. As extra

insurance, Snake shot each of them again with another dose of tranquilizer and stuffed

the unconscious bodies into a nearby truck. He then checked his radar again and saw that

there were no nearby enemies. He walked on towards the hallway and went right. He saw

the silver door of the elevator, swiped the card, and went in.

After punching the second floor button, the elevator raised upward. The room

that Snake immerged in was a small storage area filled with crates. The transceiver rang.

Snake, the room ahead of you is filled with poisonous gas. Only soldiers with

gas masks can go through. I trust you have one?

    Yes, sir, Snake responded.

    Good. Proceed onwards, over.

Snake put the gas mask on and swiped the card in the lock. He entered the gas-

covered room and ran through as fast as he could. He emerged on the opposite end, shut

the door quickly, and took off the mask. His transceiver rang once again.

Im picking up several heat signatures in your area. I believe that they are the

hostages being heavily guarded. Ive marked the location on your radar.

How am I supposed to get to them?

    16

A direct approach would be suicide, Big Boss answered. The best way would

be the air ducts. Ive also marked out those, too. You should be able to fit in. Once

youve crawled through, take the guards out with your sniper rifle, over.

Once Snake turned off his transceiver, he looked at his radar for an air duct

location. There was one in the next room. Snake opened the door, and to his surprise, saw

a soldier sleeping in a chair. Being extra careful not to wake the soldier up, Snake

crawled over to the right wall and unscrewed the vent. The air duct was large enough for

him to fit through. He crawled in the air duct and carefully placed the vent cover back on.

Snake proceeded to the hostages location. He came across several forks along the

way, but was able to stay on the correct path thanks to his radar. Snake approached the

end and saw the hostages tied up.

The resistance group consisted of ten to fifteen men and women all helplessly tied

up with thick ropes. Surrounding the men were eight guards firmly holding their rifles.

Luckily for Snake, there were multiple crates stacked up near the air duct. He would be

able to use them as cover so he could safely take the soldiers out with his sniper rifle.

Snake quickly took the vent cover off and rolled behind the crates. Aiming his rifle

steadily, he took the guards out one by one before they could even see what hit them.

The men looked startled to see their captors lying dead on the ground, but finally

understood what had happened when Snake emerged from the crates.

Im looking for Kyle Schneider, Snake said to the men as he started to untie

    them.

Schneider took a plastic card out of his pocket and gave it to Snake.

Its a Level 2 security card. Youll need it if you want to access the elevator. Its

down the hall to the left.

Will you and your men be able to take care of yourselves? Snake asked.

Yes, we will, but Im staying, Schneider said. There are still captured

resistance members. Ill try to stay hidden and you can call me if you need any help

navigating through the fortress. My frequency is 120.79. Good luck, Snake,

See you around, Snake responded as he left the room.

Moving down the hall, Snake crouched at the end of the hallway. There were two

    soldiers guarding the elevator.

I need a distraction, Snake thought.

Snake took a gas grenade from his belt and threw it in the opposite direction of

the elevator. It made a loud clanging noise. The soldiers took immediate notice and ran

down the hall away from Snake.

As fast as he could, Snake ran to the elevator, swiped the Level 2 card, and darted

in. As the elevator closed, Snake heard the explosion his gas grenade caused. He pressed

the BF button and the elevator lowered down. When the door opened, Snake could hear

three soldiers having a conversation. He followed their voices, and could see that they

were guarding the entrance to the holding cells.

That foxhounder aint goin nowhere, one of them said.

Foxhounder, Snake thought. So he is here. Snake then had an idea. He hid behind

a crate and turned his lighter on. He then lit a cigarette. Theyre bound to see the rising

    smoke

    19

Sure enough, the soldiers took notice.

See that? another soldier said. Im going to investigate.

The soldier left the room and went to the elevator entrance where Snake hid. Soon

he found Snake. At the top of his voice, the soldier yelled:

    Men! Theres an intruder!

The other soldiers ran to the site, and grabbed hold of Snake. He made no effort to

    escape.

Looks like that foxhounders gonna have company! one of the soldiers said.

The three soldiers hastily pushed Snake to the holding cells. He could clearly see that

there were dozens of small cells meant for prisoners.

Throw him in with the other one! one soldier yelled. Well tell the boss about

    him later.

When the soldiers finally left, Snake turned to his cellmate. He was a tall man

who had blond-white hair and was wearing red war paint. He had the rugged face of a

true soldier and looked like he had been through many wars.

Are you Gray Fox? Snake asked.

I am, the man said. Who are you supposed to be?

My name is Solid Snake, he answered. Ive been sent from FOXHOUND to

    rescue you.

Some rescue, Gray Fox snorted. My friend, you are the one who needs

    rescuing now.

Listen, Snake said ignoring his comment. Is it true that the terrorists are

building a nuclear weapon called Metal Gear?

  • 7/28/2019 Metal Gear the First Missions

    20/135

    20

Yes its true, Fox said seriously. Ive seen it with my own eyes. Its an

enormous bipedal tank and its armed with all sorts of weapons. Metal Gears main

feature, though, is that it can launch a nuclear missile from anywhere in the world. Once

completed, the world will be the terrorists to control.

How do I destroy Metal Gear?

Youll have to talk to Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar for that. He was forced to

design it and only he knows how to destroy it. Hes being held at a private holding cell in

the courtyard. All entrances to the courtyard are under lock and key at all times. The only

way you can get to the courtyard is if you parachute off the roof of this building. The roof

of this building has severe winds. Youd need a bomb blast suit to fight the current.

Get the bomb blast suit, get the parachute, and go to the courtyard. Got it,

    Snake said.

You act like theres a way out of this cell, Gray Fox mused.

Theres always a way, Snake answered firmly. Those soldiers werent smart

enough to take away my gear. First Ill blow up the door to this cell with C4. When the

guards come to investigate, well shoot them. Here.

Snake tossed Gray Fox his hand gun. Snake took out his C4 and placed them near

the door. He took out the detonator.

Stand back. You might want to cover your ears

There was a deafening explosion and the cell door blew to pieces.

Quick! Hide behind the cell entrance, Snake hissed.

Within seconds, the soldiers rushed to the cell.

    21

What happened?! one of them yelled. Where are the prisoners? Just as those

words escaped his lips, Snake and Gray Fox jumped out and fired. The soldiers fell dead

    on the floor.

Ill take it from here, Fox, Snake said. Youre now free to go.

Thank you, Snake, Gray Fox answered handing the gun back to him. I shall

    never forget you.

You need any help leaving this place?

No, Fox said. I can manage, but Im not leaving yet. I should also be helping

the resistance. There are probably more hostages that need rescuing.

See you around, Snake said walking away.

Good bye, Snake, Gray Fox called to him. Well meet again someday.

The two soldiers went their separate ways. Although Gray Foxs mission was

    over, Snakes was just beginning.

Snake headed towards the western exit of the holding cells. His transceiver rang.

Were you able to find Gray Fox?

Yeah, hes safe, Snake answered. In order to destroy the Metal Gear, I need to

find Dr. Madnar. Im doing that now.

Good, Big Boss said. Proceed on, over.

According to Snakes radar, there was a large room up ahead with store rooms on

each side. He would search each one for the suit. Snake approached the door to the room

and opened it. This room had rows of large crates placed horizontally across the room.

What caught Snake off guard though, was that he was not alone. There was another man

sitting down on the floor straight across from him.

    22

He was a large, burly man with a shotgun on his lap. Not only that, but he was

also wearing the bomb blast suit Snake needed. The man appeared to be meditating.

Snake took out his handgun and approached cautiously. As he came closer, the man

    suddenly spoke.

No one has escaped before, the man spoke in a thick Russian accent.

Who are you? Snake asked gun pointed.

I am Shotgunner, the man said eyes now open. I am the first of four

    mercenaries.

    Mercenaries? Snake asked.

Fool, Shotgunner answered. You think the boss would leave his fortress

    unprotected?

    Shotgunner suddenly stood up.

During the time of the Soviet Union, I was a former Spetsnaz operative. Among

the men, they regarded me as the master of this great weapon.

He picked up the large shotgun from the ground.

    Your path ends here, intruder.

Shotgunner fired a storm of bullets at Snake. With split-second timing, Snake

rolled out of the way behind a nearby crate. Snake peered from the side and fired in

    Shotgunners direction.

    His shots missed.

Snake could hear Shotgunner coming his way. If he found Snake, it would be

over.Hes too powerful for a direct approach. Ill need to attack from behind. He ran in

the opposite direction of Shotgunner and the distance between them increased. Snake

took a smoke grenade from his pouch and threw it across the room. The area soon

became covered in a thick smoke cloud.

I dont need my eyes to find you! Shotgunner bellowed. Snake took some C4

out from his belt and placed it on the ground. He then ran away from the site and threw a

hand grenade against the wall. It made an ear-splitting explosion that echoed throughout

    the room.

As the smoke cleared, he could clearly see Shotgunner running towards his C4 to

find the source of the sound. As soon as Shotgunner ran near the explosives, Snake hit the

detonator. The second explosion was three times louder then the first. It had hit

    Shotgunner with full force.

Snake ran towards his dead body and could see a look of anger frozen on his face.

He took the bomb blast suit off Shotgunners body and placed it over his sneaking suit. It

felt large and bulky, but he would only need it for the roof. He also took a plastic card

from Shotgunners belt which turned out to be the Level 3 security card. All he needed

    now was the parachute.

After searching each storage room, Snake came back empty handed. Snake

decided to call Big Boss. Snake dialed Big Bosss number and waited for a reply.

What is it Snake? Big Boss asked.

Do you have any idea where I can find a parachute? I need one to get to the-.

Theres probably a solider or someone next to the elevator on Floor 2, Big Boss

said interrupting Snake. Interrogate him for what you need, over.

That doesnt sound like Big Boss at all, Snake thought. He usually lets me finish.

Snake got into the nearby elevator and rode it up to the second floor. Big Boss

was right. There appeared to be a lone dot outside the elevator. According to the radar,

the room was another large one similar to the room where he fought Shotgunner. This

will be easy. Ill just interrogate this soldier for the parachute and be on my way.

Snake slowly open the door, gun ready, expecting to find a lone soldier. Instead

he found someone completely different. It was another mercenary.

Ah, youve finally made it! the man said. He had a hint of a British accent in his

voice. The man was a muscle-bound hulk that wore a black headband and was carrying a

machinegun. Attached to his back was the parachute Snake needed.

Kept you waiting, huh? Snake said with his firearm firmly pointed.

I received word that the foxhounder escaped. He could have not done so by

    himself, the man said.

Who are you? Snake asked not moving his weapon a millimeter.

Machinegun Kid, at your service, he said bowing. I was a former member of

SAS, special forces unit of the British Army.

The first ever special forces in existence. I guess FOXHOUND owes its

inspiration to you guys, Snake smirked.

Ha, ha! You could say that, Machinegun Kid mused. See this here? I earned

my name due to my mastery of this weapon. This is the greatest machine gun ever made.

Custom built and tested to the point of deadly accuracy. After I left SAS, I became a

mercenary for hire. My travels eventually led me here.

The time for backstory was over.

    25/135

    25

Im not surprised that Shotgunner failed to kill you. He was always all brawn

    and no brain.

Machinegun Kid stepped forward branding his weapon.

Lets see how the legendary SAS goes up against FOXHOUND, he announced

loading his gun. This is what I have been training for Now die!

As those words left his lips, Machinegun Kid fired his weapon with not a second

of hesitation. Unfortunately, the bomb blast suit that Snake wore was large and heavy,

making it very difficult for him to run. Snake tried to dodge Machinegun Kids fire, but

was a few milliseconds too late and some stray bullets hit Snake in the left shoulder.

The excruciating pain that Snake expected did not come. Looking at where the

bullets hit, Snake could see that Machinegun Kids fire had ricocheted off his body.

    Snake stopped moving.

Seeing this as a good moment to strike, Machinegun Kid fired again. This time,

the bullets hit Snake with full force. They bounced off harmlessly. The manic grin on

Machinegun Kids face faded and was replaced with a mixture of fear and anger.

Snake took out his own machinegun and fired directly at the mercenary.

    He was dead instantly.

Killed by the same weapon he was so skilled at, Snake said ironically. Snake

approached his fallen enemy and took the parachute off his back. Walking towards the

elevator, Snake swiped the Level 3 card and the doors swung open. He entered. Snake

pressed the button that led to the roof.

As he walked out of the elevator, he instantly knew what Gray Fox was talking

about. Without the added bulk of the bomb blast suit, Snake would never have been able

to maneuver pass the strong wind currents.

On the roof were four storerooms all evenly spaced out. He walked to the left and

could see the courtyard below him. To the north of the courtyard was a vast desert. He

was at least 200 meters off the ground.

As Snake analyzed his surroundings and spotted small shape in the sky. Initially

he thought it was some sort of bird, but soon thought differently as it came closer. Snake

took out his binoculars to get a closer examination.

A Hind D helicopter! Snake suddenly realized.

Snake had previously piloted one during his service at the Gulf War. Hind Ds

were well known for their powerful weapons. Twin turrets were attached to this one. A

bomb blast suit would not be able to protect Snake this time.

Snake ran as fast as he could towards the nearest storeroom. When he approached

the storeroom, he shut the door behind him. I have to think of something, Snake thought

quickly. If they dont shoot me down here, then theyll land and surely find me. Just as

Snake was about to give up, he realized that inside the storeroom was an RPG rocket

    launcher.Just my luck!

Snake quickly loaded the RPG and kicked the door open. The Hind D was now in

clear view and Snake had a clear shot. He aimed the RPG towards the Hind Ds cockpit.

There was a colossal explosion and the remains of the Hind D fell to the ground

below. The pilots did not survive.

After catching his breath, Snake went to the side of the building and jumped off

the edge. He then deployed the parachute and gently floated down below. As he fell

closer to the ground, he could see a small compound about the size of a small shack. It

    was guarded by two soldiers.

Snake landed behind a large bush, out of sight from the soldiers. After he

incapacitated both soldiers with the handgun, he approached the small compound and

opened the door. Instead of finding Dr. Madnar, he found another resistance member, tied

    up and gagged.

Wheres Dr. Madnar? Snake asked untying his gag.

Theyve moved him to the Building 2 basement, the man said shaking. You

have to cross the desert to get to the building.

Thanks, Snake said as he started to walk away.

    Wait! the man cried.

What is it? Snake asked half annoyed.

Youre not seriously going through the desert without a compass, are you? Its

very easy to get lost and there are poisonous scorpions. Here, the man said as he handed

Snake a compass. He also handed him a small vial filled with a clear liquid.

    Whats this? Snake asked.

This liquid is a fast-acting healer that cures most poisons, the man answered. If

you get stung, pour three drops of this onto the wound.

    Thanks. Anything else?

Yes, the man said. The enemy knows youre here now. Theyre guarding

Building 2 to the teeth. If you want to get in, disguise yourself as an enemy soldier.

Alright. Before I leave, may I have your name?

Steve, the man said. By the way, did you rescue Schneider and the resistance?

    Theyre safe, Snake answered.

In that case, you must have rescued my sister Diane as well. Shes always with

Schneider. Before they captured me, we were both separated.

There was one blonde woman with the group I rescued, Snake recalled. She

    looked sort of like you.

    Thats her! Steve exclaimed.

I hope you find her, Snake answered. As for me, I have a doctor to rescue.

Before leaving the courtyard, Snake took a uniform from one of the fallen

soldiers. He took off the bomb blast suit and replaced it with the uniform. His sneaking

suit fit inside his pouch. Snake approached the gate to the desert, pushed it open, and

    began his voyage.

In all directions were miles of barren desert. To make matters worse, a fierce wind

was blowing sand in Snakes face, making it very difficult for him to see. Following his

compass, he headed northward. Snake kept on walking and quickly lost track of the time.

How long has it been? 20 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? The wind knocked him

to the ground. As he tried to get up, he felt a sharp sting in his left arm.

    Snake howled in pain.

I must have been stung by a scorpion when I fell, Snake thought woozily. His

senses started to dim and darkness began to cloud his brain. He stumbled and fell again.

He was getting weaker by the second.

No! I have a mission to fulfill! I wont give up!

Snake reached into his pouch and felt around for the glass vial. He pulled the

antidote out of the bag. Snake took the cork off and poured three drops on the wound.

The pain disappeared almost as quickly as it came.

Yes! Snake stood up and put the vial back in his pouch. After a few more minutes

of walking, Snake could see the outline of Building 2. He approached closer and could

    see the gate up ahead.

With all his might, Snake pushed the gate open and walked into the courtyard.

    He had made it.

Several soldiers were guarding the building entrance.

This better work. Snake approached the men and saluted them.

    Permission to enter? he asked.

The soldiers nodded and let him advance. He went through the door. The room

that Snake emerged in was similar to the hanger in Building 2. Instead of trucks,

however, this room was filled with various war planes and copters. He walked into a

nearby storeroom and changed back into his sneaking suit. Big Boss then called him.

I see youve managed to infiltrate Building 2.

Yes sir, Snake said. Im on my way to Dr. Madnars new location.

Snake, Im changing my frequency to 120.13, Big Boss said, quickly changing

    the subject.

    What for?

    Security measures, over.

    It was locked.

The hallway that he was in was long and narrow. The bulldozers mass took up

the entire width of the room, so there was no way around it.

Come on, think! I need to destroy this machine somehow Ive got it! But I have

    to move fast.

Snake took his bag of hand grenades out of his pouch. With split-second timing,

he turned on his lighter, threw it in the bag, and chucked the bag of grenades at the

    bulldozer.

The bulldozer which was once a hulking mass was now a pile of scrap metal. He

headed down the hallway. There were no other rooms accept the one up ahead. When he

went into the room, he could see whom he presumed was Dr. Madnar tied up against the

wall. He was an old man about the age of Big Boss. To Snake, he resembled Albert

    Einstein. His eyes were closed.

Dr. Madnar? Snake asked as he approached the captured scientist. The mans

eyes immediately opened and a chilling electronic voice came from his lips:

INTRUDER! INTRUDER! ILL KILL YOU FOXHOUNDER!

The man suddenly disappeared into nothingness.A decoy! Snake realized. He was

just some kind of projection! Before Snake could do anything else, the floor started to

    retract towards the walls.

Below was a bottomless dark abyss.

In just a few seconds, the entire floor would be gone and Snake would fall below.

Luckily, Snake bolted to the door at the left. He rammed the door open and jumped into

the next room. He had narrowly avoided death once again.

It took him several seconds to realize that he was not alone. There was a man

aiming a flamethrower right at him.

He wore a white flame-retardant suite and wore a mask that gave him a grotesque

    appearance.

Im surprised that youve made it this far, foxhounder, the man said. He spoke

in a German accent. No matter. Ill see to it that you are burnt to a crisp. Face the wrath

of Fire Trooper, the last opponent you will ever face! Bright, red flames emerged from

his weapon. Snake dropped to the floor, as the fire soared over his head. He rolled behind

    a wooden crate.

Fool! Fire Trooper yelled. Do you not know that wood burns?

The mercenary fired his weapon at the crate and it instantly lit on fire. The flames

were only inches away from Snake.

He wears little body armor. All Ive got to do is wait for an opening and attack.

Ive got one chance. Snake lifted one of the smaller crates and threw it in Fire Troopers

direction. Fire Trooper pointed his flamethrower at the crate and proceeded to burn it in

mid air. Snake used this as an opportunity to strike.

With Fire Troopers weapon pointed away from him, Snake hastily took out his

machinegun and fired at Fire Trooper. The flames from Fire Troopers weapon

disappeared and the man fell dead on the floor. As Snake stood up, his transceiver rang. It

was coming from a frequency unknown to Snake.

Is this Solid Snake? the voice asked. It was a soft female voice that belonged to

    a young girl.

Speaking, Snake answered. Who is this?

My name is Jennifer, the voice said. Kyle gave me your frequency and told me

to contact you. He gave me orders to lead you to Dr. Madnar.

Alright, what do I do first?

Have you defeated Fire Trooper? Jennifer asked.

    Yeah, hes dead. Snake answered.

You need to take his Level 4 security card if you want to leave the room youre

    in.

Snake swiped the card in the door ahead and immerged in another hallway.

Dr. Madnar is being held at a cell at the right of this hall, Jennifer said to Snake.

Hes being guarded by two Bloody Brad androids. These androids have very dense

armor and conventional arms are virtually useless against them.

So, how am I supposed to destroy them? Snake asked impatiently.

Youll need to use an RPG-7 rocket launcher. Theres a store room to your left.

    Search there, over, Jennifer answered.

Snake quickly darted to the left and looked at his radar for the store room. When

Snake reached the end, he swiped his Level 4 card and the door swung open. The

storeroom had many shelves filled with weapons. After about two minutes of searching,

Snake was able to find the rocket launcher.

Retracing his steps, Snake headed to the other end of the hall. Snake opened the

door, and could see a solitary cell guarded by the two androids. The Bloody Brads looked

almost human. They had muscular builds and were both identical. Each one had two guns

attached to their bodies. As Snake stepped forward, the androids sprung to life.

They both ran towards Snake, guns a blazing. Snake ran across the room, dodging

their fire. As they both reloaded, Snake fired his RPG at one of the robots. It hit the

android squarely in the chest, and it flew back like a rag doll. Mechanical parts flew out

of its body. It stirred a bit, and then became silent. One down, one to go.

The second robot took no notice of his fallen partner and ran towards Snake.

Snake quickly reloaded his RPG and shot the android before it could get any closer. Dr.

Madnar was saved. He put the rocket launcher down and headed toward the doctors cell.

Thank heavens youve rescued me! Dr. Madnar cried as Snake approached the

man. The captured scientist looked exactly the same as his decoy counterpart. The door

was sealed tight so Snake blasted apart the lock with his handgun.

Those robots put up quite a fight, Snake smirked.

I know, I designed them, Dr. Madnar said. The enemy forced me to build

    them. Ironic isnt it?

Listen, I need you to tell me how to destroy Metal Gear, Snake said.

Im sorry, Madnar answered. But Ill only tell you if you rescue my daughter.

    Theyve captured her, too.

Look, I dont have time to,

Please! Madnar cut him off. Ellen is my pride and joy. Theyre threatening to

    kill her!

Where is she being held? Snake asked impatiently.

In the Building 1 basement, Madnar answered.

    growled.

    35

Dont worry, Dr. Madnar responded. The two basements are connected via an

underground passageway. Its to the left of this room.

Snake peered out of the cell, and could see that there was indeed a large door to

    the left of the room.

Alright, Ill do it, Snake said.

Careful, Madnar said. The passage way is filled with explosive mines hidden

underground. He then pulled a pair of goggles from his lab coat. Youll need these to

avoid them. He handed them to Snake.

Be careful. Ill be back, Snake said as he opened the door. Snake could see

ahead of him a long tunnel that extended for a couple of miles. On the walls were pipes

and valves. Snake put the goggles over his eyes and could see several mines in the

ground. He walked for about half an hour carefully avoiding the mines in the ground.

When he emerged from the tunnel, he could hear maniacal laughter.

He followed the chilling sound down the hall. The sounds were coming from the

room up ahead. When Snake opened the door, he could see a girl a being beaten with a

    crowbar by two soldiers.

Please stop! the girl begged. The soldiers simply continued to hit her and

laughed cruelly. Snake stepped forward towards the soldiers and they both spun around.

Who, one of them began to say. Before he could finish, Snake took out his

handgun and shot both of them dead on the ground.

Are you okay? Snake asked approaching the girl.

A little bruised, but Ill live, the girl said. As she rose, Snake could see that see

that she was a tall girl in her early 20s with long dark hair.

Yes, but weve got to hurry or theyll move him, Snake said. They both exited

    the room.

Come on, Snake said Weve got a long walk ahead of us.

    Ellen Madnar embraced her father.

I thought Id never see you again, she cried.

Dont worry, Madnar said. We wont be separated again.

I hate to break up this little reunion, Snake interrupted. But could you please

tell me how to destroy Metal Gear?

Right, Madnar said. As you know, Metal Gear TX-55 is capable of launching a

nuclear missile from anywhere in the world. Fortunately though, all of Metal Gears

weapons are temporarily inactive. I still havent completed its weapon systems yet. You

should have no problem destroying it. Its weakness is its legs.

    Its legs? Snake asked.

Yes. The only way Metal Gear can be destroyed is if you plant and activate

explosives in a specific pattern. You must plant C4 explosive at its legs in this order:

Right, Right, Left, Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Left, Right, Right, Left, Right, Left,

    Right, Right.

Snake carefully memorized the pattern and put it in the back of his mind. Being a

Metal Gear is stationed at the 100 th floor basement of Building 3 which is located

20 kilometers to the north from here, Dr. Madnar answered.

How am I supposed to get there?

Theres a shipment of weapons headed towards there in a few minutes, Madnar

said. Board that truck, and it will take you straight to your destination. The garage is

down the hall to the right of this room.

Thank you, Snake finally said. Will you both be able to make it out of here?

Dont worry, Ellen piped in. Ill make sure we both make it out alive.

Alright then, Snake said walking away. Catch you later.

Snake headed down the hall to the garage. Before doing so, he changed back into

the soldier uniform. He then proceeded to the garage.

The garage was filled with various war vehicles such as trucks and jeeps. At the

garages entrance, he could see a lone soldier taking inventory of cargo. He headed

    towards him.

Ive been instructed to accompany the weapons shipment headed for Building

    3.

You came just in time, the soldier said. Its leaving right now. Youre clear to

This is no laughing matter Snake, Jennifer said seriously. Hes holding

You need to be very cautious when fighting him, Jennifer said. He was

originally part of the extremist terrorist group Egg Plan. Hes notorious for using other

people as human shields. If my brother gets hurt, Ill

    Thank you, Snake.

Jennifer hung up as the elevator finally stopped. Snake stepped out of the elevator

and approached the door to the next room. He took a deep breath and opened the door.

Lying on the floor were six men all tied up and gagged. In the middle of the room

was a muscle-bound man wearing camo pants and a black sleeveless shirt. He was

    holding several boomerangs.

Didnt expect you to make it this far, mate! Dirty Duck said. He had an

Australian accent. Now the party can start!

This partys over, Snake said pointing his hand gun at Dirty Duck.

On the contrary, Dirty Duck cackled. Its just begun!

Get up! he yelled to the hostages. The hostages did as they were told and

formed a human wall in front Dirty Duck. If Snake tried to attack, he would harm the

hostages. Before Snake could think of a plan, Dirty Duck threw one of his boomerangs at

    Snake.

    from the hostages.

Think you so tough? Snake called out. Ive never heard a more ridiculous

    name.

    The boomerangs stopped coming.

At least the other mercenaries had weapons. I bet you cant even fire a gun!

    The room became completely silent.

You know what you are? Snake taunted Dirty Duck? More like Coward Duck.

Why dont you come out here and face me like a man?

He charged out from the hostages.

DONT. CALL. ME. COWARD! Dirty Duck bellowed as he ran towards him.

Snake swiftly took out his gun and fired at Dirty Duck. In five seconds, he was dead.

Snake put his gun away and proceeded to untie the hostages. Once they were all

    untied, Snake said:

Is any one of you here Jennifers brother?

I am, one of the younger men responded. Is she safe?

Yes, Snake answered. All of you should get out of here.

After they all thanked Snake for rescuing them, the men headed out of the room

towards the elevator. Once they were all gone, Snakes transceiver rang. It was

    Schneider.

Before Schneider could finish, Snake could hear a scream on the other line. After

    that, silence.

    Schneider? Schneider? Whats going on?

But there was no response from Schneider. His line was dead.

If I could, Id go after Schneider. But I cant. The mission must always come first.

Its what Big Boss would have wanted.

But Snake wasnt even sure about that. He didnt even know if he could trust him

any more. Big Boss was always like a father to Snake. Before, he would have trusted Big

Boss with his life. Now, he wasnt so sure.

Snake approached the door and swiped his Level 4 card in the lock. The door

stayed shut. He tried the other cards to no avail. He then realized the Dirty Duck must

have the card he needed. He approached Dirty Ducks body and saw that he had the

Level 5 security card. Snake took it and used it on the door. This time, the door slid open.

The next room was a small hanger. When Snake entered the hanger, he almost fell over.

Towering before him was Metal Gear.

It had to be at least 6 meters tall and 3 meters wide. Metal Gear stood on two legs

which took about a third of its mass. It was armed with two 15mm Vulcan guns and a 20

cm laser cannon. Stationed at its left was Metal Gears largest weapon, a nuclear mount

module which could hold up to two warheads at a time. Luckily though, it was empty.

both of the guns. They both exploded into debris.

I need to move quickly, Snake thought.

Snake still had enough plastic explosive to put an end to Metal Gear. Following

Dr. Madnars instructions on how to destroy Metal Gear: Right, Right, Left, Right, Left,

Left, Right, Left, Left, Right, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right; Snake placed his C4

on Metal Gears legs and detonated it in the exact order.

The final explosion finally gave way and the legs fell apart. The rest of Metal

Gear soon followed. What could have been the end of the world was now a large pile of

    rubble.

Snake started to head out of the hanger. Suddenly, thick metal bars covered the

    door, blocking Snakes exit.

    What the?

The door to Snakes right then opened. Seeing this as the only way out, he

cautiously went through the door with his weapon ready. The person on the other side

    caught Snake completely off guard.

Big Boss was standing right in front of him holding a rifle.

I had a feeling that you would come this far, Snake, Big Boss said calmly.

So youre the leader of Outer Heaven, Snake said. Youre Vermon CaTaffy.

    43

Yes, Big Boss answered. CaTaffy was nothing more then a figure I created.

However, what you heard about CaTaffy is partially true. There are many things in my

past that Im not proud of.

Why Boss? Snake asked. Why create Metal Gear? Why betray your country?

I was once like you Snake, Big Boss said. Blindly following my countrys

orders. It doesnt matter what country youre fighting for or even what side youre on.

    War is war.

What do you mean? Snake asked.

You see, Snake, Big Boss said. I hate war. War tears people apart and brings

forth destruction. Yet its only on the battlefield when I feel truly alive. I learnt that

    lesson a long time ago.

I created FOXHOUND as an official United States military unit. I later left it and

founded Outer Heaven as a way for soldiers to escape their countries and to give them a

place where they would always be needed. You saw those mercenaries. All of them

wanted to escape their pasts. They all wandered the world until I took them in. Those

mercenaries, along with hundreds of other soldiers, had similar stories. They all became

my private army. When we started, we scoured the globe looking for a reason to fight.

Sometimes we were terrorists; sometimes we were paid to fight. We were many things.

Many years later, I rejoined FOXHOUND once again as its leader. While I was working

with FOXHOUND, I was also building Outer Heaven in secret.

I had a great vision. I would create one global superpower. One great nation. It

would be a perfect world for soldiers and I would be the sole leader. First, I created a

fortress as a base of operations. I then would create a doomsday weapon so I could take

Despite Big Bosss old age, he proved to still be a dangerous foe. As the two men

continued to strike blows at each other, the ceiling started to crumble. The entire room

was shaking. Snake continued to punch and kick as Big Boss blocked. Soon Big Bosss

breathing was becoming heavier. He was becoming weaker. Snake used this as an

opportunity to gain the upper hand against him. Big Bosss movement became slower and

Snake used all his energy to kick him against the wall. As soon as he hit the wall, the

ceiling fell onto him. Soon he was trapped under tons of rubble.

SNAAAAAAAAKE! Big Boss yelled. Another piece of rubble knocked him

unconscious. Snake looked around the room for an exit and could see one on the other

side. Fast as a cheetah, Snake bolted across the room and swiped his Level 5 card through

the lock. He jumped through the door and landed in the next room, leaving Big Boss to

his fate. He called Jennifer on his transceiver.

Jennifer! Whats the fastest way out of here?

I have a helicopter parked at the surface, she answered. Theres an emergency

exit in the room youre in. Do you see a tall ladder?

Snake looked around. At the end of the hall was a large ladder.

    I see it!

Good, Jennifer said. You better hurry. You have less then ten minutes to get to

    the surface.

Snake quickly turned off the transceiver and ran to the end of the hallway. He

climbed up the ladder. The only thing Snake thought about was getting to the top. After

about three minutes of intensive climbing, Snake could see a valve at leading towards the

He thought he had the worlds best interests in mind, Snake thought I dont know

The helicopter flew into the sunset.

Operation Intrude N313 had been a success.

    Epilogue

The threat of a nuclear attack had been avoided and the United States was at

peace. Snake was given a medal for services to his country and his life slowly returned to

normal. With Big Boss gone, FOXHOUND was taken over by Roy Campbell, an old

colleague of Snakes. The United States government decided to keep the whole incident a

secret from the public and Snake was forbidden to tell what actually happened. The

destruction of Outer Heaven was covered up as simply an earthquake. Snake decided to

retire from FOXHOUND, and after a few weeks of recovering and resting, Snake was

allowed to return to his home in Alaska

    ***

The door to Snakes home opened. He had not been here in months. In his

absence, Snake had received no mail other than a small package which was postmarked

several days ago. He went to the kitchen and placed it on the table. He took a cigar out of

a box, sat down, and lit it. As he smoked the cigar, he opened the package. It was a

miniature tape recorder with a cassette in it. Wondering who could have sent him such an

object, Snake played the tape. It was silent for a few seconds and then it spoke.

Snake, the recording said. The voice was indistinguishable.

Dr. Madnar told Snake that the only way to destroy Metal Gear was to destroy its legs in

a specific order. Metal Gear was currently located in the 100 th floor basement of Building

    3. On his way to the basement, Snake received a distress signal on his transmitter from

Kyle Schneider. He was about to reveal Outer Heavens true leader, but was cut off

before he could continue. Snake never saw him again.

At this time, Big Boss started acting strangely. He started to provide Snake with

faulty information that would slow down his progress. Eventually, Big Boss told Snake to

completely abort his mission. Disobeying his commanding officers orders, Snake

continued the mission and successfully destroyed Metal Gear, ending the nuclear threat.

Snakes victory, however, was short lived.

In the next room, Snake came face to face with Outer Heavens leader. It was not

Vermon CaTaffy, but Big Boss himself. Big Boss told Snake that he was only sent to

distract the United States and thought that a rookie would never able to complete the

mission. He went on to say that he created Outer Heaven to offer a place for soldiers to

escape their countries and that he wanted to eradicate war by ruling the world. After his

long speech, Big Boss told him that he would kill Snake for destroying Metal Gear and

    interfering with his plans.

A fierce battle commenced. Using CQC (Close Quarters Combat) techniques that

Big Boss taught him, Snake was able to defeat his mentor. Metal Gears destruction

activated Outer Heavens self-destruct sequence and Snake only had a few minutes to

evacuate before the entire base was destroyed.

It is the late 1990s The world is embarking on an age of peace and stability.

Relations between the Cold War superpowers have thawed. Regional conflicts are being

resolved. The threat of nuclear war is now a thing of the past. But there are some who do

not desire peace An atmosphere of tension begins to build in the Middle East. A

military junta comes to power in Zanzibar Land, a small nation bordering on the USSR,

China, and the Middle East. Zanzibar Land attacks nuclear weapons disposal sites

around the world, seizing those weapons that are still intact, and becomes the worlds

only nuclear power. It then begins to invade its neighbors at will. After renouncing nukes

forever, the world is once again threatened by the specter of nuclear war. Meanwhile, the

worlds oil supply, which was to last another 30 years, suddenly and unexpectedly dries

up. Without a safe alternative source of energy, the world faces a severe energy crisis. It

is in these dire circumstances that Dr. Kio Marv, a Czech biologist, develops OILIX, a

microbe that can synthesize high-grade petroleum. With this discovery, global tensions

are once again on the rise. On his way to attend an American scientific conference, Dr.

Marv is kidnapped by agents of Zanzibar Land. With its nuclear weapons and the secret

of OILIX, Zanzibar Land plans to achieve global military domination. A tiny microbe,

only a few microns wide, is about to change the world forever.

Same old Snake, Roy said amused. Youre probably wondering why I sent for

    you.

You know Im retired, Colonel, Snake sighed. I would have liked it to stay that

    way.

Roy put his hand on Snakes shoulder.

I know, Snake. But youre the best weve got and we need you. This concerns

the fate of the United States and is of utmost importance.

Why should I stick my neck out for this country? Snake snapped.

Because youre the only one who can do this, Campbell answered. You saved

the world and you were a hero. You can do it again.

It was true. Snake had saved the world. Four years ago, he destroyed a large

nuclear weapon called Metal Gear in the fortress of Outer Heaven. It threatened the very

existence of peace and stability, but Snake was successfully able to dispose of it. The

mission, however, came at a cost. Snakes leader, Big Boss, betrayed him and the two

men fought each other in a fierce battle. Snake presumed that Big Boss was dead, but he

received a message from him weeks later that he was alive and well. After that, Snakes

life was never the same. From that point on, he was always haunted by nightmares of

Outer Heaven, Metal Gear, and Big Boss. Snake knew that he was still out there

somewhere, biding his time until the two would meet again.

Im no hero, Campbell, Snake said. Just a professional whos good at what he

    does. Killing.

The two sat in silence for a moment.

    58

So what exactly is this wonderful mission that youve assigned me too? Snake

    asked finally.

About a month ago, Czech scientist Kio Marv was captured by Zanzibar Land

forces on his way from the World Energy Conference in Prague to America, Campbell

said. He was planning on demonstrating OLIX.

OLIX? Snake asked confused. Ive never heard of that before.

Im sure youre aware of the recent shortage in the worlds oil supplies,

Campbell answered. OLIX is a new type of substance thats indistinguishable from

high-quality petroleum. Marv developed the substance through the mutation of a kind of

    algae.

Marv was to demonstrate OLIX to the world for the first time at the press

conference. While he was above American soil, his plane was hijacked before it even

touched the ground. Since he never shared the formula with anyone else, hes the only

one who knows it. Zanzibar Land is in the perfect location to create OLIX. If Zanzibar

Land gets a hold of those OLIX plans, the entire world is doomed. With OLIX, they

could achieve total domination of the worlds oil market.

Control of the worlds oil supply? It cant possibly get any worse, can it? Snake

    asked.

It already has, Campbell answered grimly. Even though the world has given up

on nuclear weapons, they already have hundreds at their disposal. Theyve somehow

been attacking nuclear weapon disposal sites across the world and seizing the weapons

that are still intact. Combine that with OLIX, and we could be in serious trouble.

    What are you saying, Schneider?

Snake, after you destroyed Metal Gear, NATO launched a massive bombing

campaign against Outer Heaven, Schneider answered. All of us Resistance fighters

and the children of Outer Heaven they didnt care about any of us. There was no

escape from the flames They died like animals in a cage.

I cant believe this, Snake said weakly.

Think about it, Schneider responded. The children of Outer Heaven were

originally war orphans and refugees from around the world. They were a liability and

NATO didnt want to deal with them.

    No

Snake, youre no different. Theyll forget about you too But he wasnt like

    them

    Who?

He came and saved us from annihilation, Schneider said. He forgave us for

what wed done. He gave us a new home A new family

    He did? You mean

Snake, youll understand soon what a wonderful man he is

Schneiders breathing was becoming heavy now. He did not have much time left.

Snake I owe you a debt, Schneider said finally. Theres no hate between us.

    need this.

Schneider handed him a Level 2 security card. After that, Schneider fell silent.

Schneider Snake said sadly.I got no time to grieve now, Snake thought.I

    have a job to do.

With that, he walked to the door ahead, swiped the card, and went through. Before

moving any further, Snake saw that there were two doors on either side of him. More

importantly, there were laser sensors along the walls. To get a better view of them, Snake

put on his thermal goggles. To the right was a storeroom and to the left was the path back

to the elevator.Ill check the store room first, Snake thought. He crawled to the right,

carefully avoiding the sensors. Inside the store room was a gas mask, a mine detector, and

a suppressor for the handgun. Crawling out of the store room, Snake went left.

He immerged inside another hallway with nerve gas. Snake quickly put his gas

mask on and ran through. Finally, he was back at the elevator. Arriving on the first floor,

Snake made his way back to the main hanger door which led outside of the building. He

hid behind a nearby tank as two soldiers walked by. One of them was wearing a green

    beret.

Im going to go check on the prisoner, Green Beret said. Make sure he hasnt

    escaped.

What are you worrying about? the other soldier said. Hes locked up tight in

the middle of that thick jungle. He isnt leaving.

Its not that, Green Beret answered. The buildings alarm was triggered on the

second floor. Theres an intruder lurking around.

slow, but even one slip up, and he would sink. It took him almost an hour, but Snake was

able to successfully cross the murky depths unharmed.

There was a small armory in front of him. Snake cautiously entered with his gun

pointed forwards. The armory that he was in consisted of six rooms. There was one

locked room to his right and four rooms up ahead that were all connected to each other.

Seeing as the room to the right was locked (none of the IC cards worked), Snake

moved ahead into the rooms in front of him. As soon as he entered, the door

automatically locked behind him. All of a sudden, a man wearing a gas mask and green

    camo ran towards Snake.

A visitor! What a pleasant surprise! ...And just in time, too, he said. I was

about to go for a little run. I am Running Man, the worlds fastest mercenary. No man can

keep up with me! See for yourself!

In the blink of an eye, Running Man dashed into the next rooms and was back in

What do you think? he panted. Pretty fast, eh? But Im just getting warmed

A loud alarm suddenly went off.

Hear that sound? Thats nerve gas seeping into this building. Defeat me before

the gas gets to you, and you might survive. The clock is ticking Let the race begin!

Like before, Running Man ran into the next room. It would be futile for Snake to

catch him. He quickly put his gas mask on and dialed Kaslers frequency.

Guess you werent fast enough, Snake answered.

Running Man said nothing as he expired.

Snake could see that attached to Running Mans belt was a Level 3 IC card. He

took it and decided to see what was in the locked room from before. Gun pointed, he

entered. In the room were crates of FIM-92 stinger missiles. Not only that, but there were

two kids, a boy and a girl, sitting on the crates. Putting his gun down, Snake said:

What are you two doing here? An armory is no place for kids.

Those men with guns told us to stay here, the boy said. They told us to watch

over the stingers so they could put them on some tanks later.

Listen, Snake said. If you come with me, I can try to get you out of here.

Its alright, the girl said. We were just leaving anyway. By the way mister, I

    found this.

She handed him a red card.

Its a master card for levels 1, 2, and 3. You can keep it if you want.

The children ran away before Snake could say anything else.

Something is going on around here. Children dont usually live in a terrorist

bases. Ill get to the bottom of this, but I have the mission to complete first.

Before leaving, Snake took a few of the missiles and a missile launcher, just in

case. The missile launcher was portable enough to fit on Snakes back. He exited out of

the armory and continued moving north. In about half an hour, Snake was out of the

    jungle.

He had now emerged in a large desert plain with fences on all sides. The moment

he stepped forward, his transceiver rang.

Snake! Watch out! Youre in a minefield! said a deep voice unknown to Snake.

The screen from the other line was blank.

    Who are you? Snake asked.

Im youre number one fan. Keep up the good work

    The line went dead.

What the hell is going on? Snake thought. Who is this guy?

Nevertheless, Snake pulled out the mine detector. It turned out that his fan was

correct. Getting on his knees, Snake crawled around the field, digging up the mines for

future use. The process was cumbersome, but in the end was rewarding.

Up ahead, were a few trucks guarded by a lone enemy solider. Snake quickly shot

him and stowed his corpse away from view. Inside the truck were B2 rations which

contained beans, meatballs, franks, beef, and potatoes. There were also B3 rations which

consisted of sauce-boiled sliced hams, chicken, turkey, spaghetti with beef, cheese, and

coffee. As Snake started walking away from the truck, the ground below him started to

squeak. The transceiver rang. It was from Holly.

Thats Nariko singing sand, imported all the way from Okinawa, Japan, she

said. Thats why they call this place the Nariko Desert. The sand youre on squeaks

when you walk on it. Its sort of a natural security system. The sound will give your

position away, so be careful See ya.

There were soldiers stationed everywhere, so Snake had to be extremely quiet.

Getting on all fours, Snake crawled forward. Whenever an enemy soldier came close, he

would roll under a truck or behind a crate. This went on for a while and Snake was

He put the night vision goggles on and his vision drastically improved. The room

was practically empty, except for another child reading a book holding a flashlight.

Hey mister, the child said looking up from his book. They just put a bunch of

dummy soldiers in the next room. I think there are even real soldiers in there, too!

Why would they do that? Snake thought.

He cautiously entered the room and was amazed at what he saw. Aligning the

walls were perfect wax replicas of the soldiers. They were all made to scale and were

    wearing the exact same uniforms.

If the kids right, then the soldiers can attack me at any time, Snake thought as he

carefully looked around. Wait a minute! I can check my radar!

Looking at the radars screen, he could see three blinking dots. He took out his

handgun and planted three carefully placed shots in the soldiers heads. Blood spurted

from their skulls as their bodies fell. At the end of the mannequin room was the door

    leading to the mess hall.

Along the left wall were stands containing food in a buffet line. There were three

long tables in the center of the room containing seats for about 100 men. In front of the

tables were two 40-inch screen TVs that provided entertainment for the soldiers during

    meals.

The entire mess hall was deserted except for Snake.

Snake kicked opened the door to womens restroom with his gun pointed forward.

Inside was a dark blond haired woman looking at a mirror. She looked almost like Holly,

only she was taller and slightly older.

Are you Gustava? Snake asked lowering his gun.

Yes, thats me, she said turning to Snake. I am Gustava Heffner of the STB

and you must be Solid Snake. We both have the same goal in mind. Why dont we work

    together to save Dr. Marv?

Something about Gustava struck Snake as odd. Not just her curt and straight-to-

Have we met before? Snake asked.

Hm. Typical western man. Always ready with a pick-up line, Gustava mused.

    Then it hit Snake.

Now I remember! Youre Gustava Heffner, the Ice Princess! Snake realized.

You took the gold at the Calgary Olympics.

You must be mistaken, she answered quickly.

I dont think so, Snake began to say. I know Ive

Enough of this! Gustava cut him off. What about Dr. Marv?

I was able to contact him, but he doesnt speak any English, Snake answered.

    Left! she directed.

Towards the left was another elevator leading towards the surface.

Dr. Madnars up there, Gustava said. Lets get him before we continue on.

    Alright, Snake said in agreement.

The elevator only had one floor labeled 1. They punched in the button and the

elevator rose. The door opened. The room was a grey prison cell that contained only a

bed and a toilet. On the bed was Madnar, looking old and exhausted. He was exactly as

Snake remembered on Outer Heaven. Short, grey, and a face like Albert Einsteins.

Gustava! Snake! he said smiling weakly.

Doctor, youre all right! Gustava exclaimed.

Madnar, youve lost weight, Snake noticed.

And you havent changed a bit Snake, Madnar answered.

I hate to interrupt, Gustava said. But we still have to rescue Marv.

You mean Marv is still alive? Madnar asked surprised. I tried to escape from

the passageway, but the elevator wouldnt open from the inside.

Gustava, Snake ordered. You and the doctor get behind me. Were moving

    out!

Wait! Madnar said. I have something for you Snake. I swiped it from a guard.

    Its IC Card Level 5.

He dug into his lab coat pockets and handed Snake the card.

Lead the way, Snake! Madnar said getting up.

The trio walked back to the elevator and headed back to the sewer. The looked to

the side and waited for the sweeper to pass. Once it did, the walked ahead down along a

High or low temperatures... Snake thought. Wait a minute! Holly said that there

was a sauna on the fourth floor.

He took the brooch out of his pocket and examined it. It was made out of bronze

and in the shape of two letters: ZL. Snake could still smell Gustavas perfume on the

    brooch.

This must be a key for something important. I better get to the fourth floor before

I leave here. First, Ill get the hang glider.

Snake walked into the storeroom and found the bright orange hang glider against

the wall. He also found a blue card (which replaced the Level 4-6) cards and an Ingram

    MAC-11 machine gun.

After he was done with the storeroom, he went to the nearest elevator and rose to

the fourth floor. Using his radar, Snake was able to get to the mess hall. At the south end

of the room, Snake could see the door to the sauna.

There was no one in sight.

He slowly crept toward the door and kicked it open. It was empty.

The sauna was a large wooden room with benches along the wall. In the center

was a furnace full of coals that caused the room to be full of steam. In his hand, the

brooch turned soft and automatically morphed into a key.

Shape Memory Alloy. Never would have guessed.

As Snake walked towards the exit, the doors handle suddenly turned. Someone

    was coming.

He quickly dove underneath a nearby bench. A soldier wrapped in a towel

emerged in the room, unaware of Snake. He walked towards the center of the room and

He took out his Level 8 card and swiped it in the lock. The laser grid immediately

disappeared. Snake entered the prison camp. The camp consisted of several small

complexes meant for keeping prisoners. In the center was a larger building meant for

keeping the more important ones. Snake assumed that Madnar and Marv were being held

    there.

Snake cautiously waked towards the main building keeping an eye out for guards.

Once near, he darted inside. The room he was in now was empty except for a few crates

and an elevator that led to the prisons. Snake looked inside a few the crates for more

weapons and supplies. In the end, he found a few rations and some smoke grenades.

Its my lucky day, Snake thought to himself as he went into the elevator. As the

elevator lowered to the basement, Snakes transceiver rang.

Snake! Its me! said a voice. It was Snakes so called anonymous number one

    fan.

You again? Who the hell are you? Snake asked surprised.

Never mind that, he answered quickly. Youre in danger!

What do you mean? Snake said puzzled.

    The elevator arri
