All Things Detectamet“I have often described Detectamet’s detectable products as the ‘Silent Guardians’ of food safety” said Sean Smith when he announced a new award to recognize a food processing company’s commitment to food safety.

Detectamet’s Chairman explained that the Detectamet Guardian Award would be presented to a company that demonstrated its food safety culture by protecting customers and consumers from the risk of physical contamination in its products.

There are three levels of award. Silver, Gold and Platinum and they will be presented in accordance with the level of commitment made by the recipients. Silver awards will go to food companies using more than three detectable products. Gold winners will be employing seven or more products and the users of eleven or more products will have eleven or more products in use to protect their products from plastic contamination.

The SOFHT Company of the Year is awarded to a company with less than 100 employees with a strong focus in Food Safety, by the Society of Food Hygiene and Technology, Britain’s premier professional body of food safety practitioners. Detectamet has received this award in 2013 and 2015, it was presented to Angela Musson-Smith, the Group Managing Director/President, and CEO Sean Smith.

Mr. Smith said: “To be recognized by this respected independent body of food safety specialists, for the second time, is a great honour.

“We have launched dozens of new products to improve food safety. We have been honoured for our technical innovation by the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce and received the Queens Award for Enterprise in Export.”

Mrs. Musson-Smith added: “We strive to meet the food safety needs of the food industry and this award is a further boost to all our staff.”

(April 2015) It is with great pride that Detectamet Limited is able to announce that the company has been named as a winner of the Queens Award for Enterprise, the UK’s highest accolade for business success. The award is in recognition of the company’s successful development of International Trade. In the three years prior to recognition Detectamet had continuously increased exports achieving a growth of more than 80%.

The company has a phenomenal staff who design, manufacture and distribute products that are made using Metal and X-ray detectable plastics. If pieces of this plastic end up in the food they will be identified and rejected by the metal or X-ray inspection systems used by many food manufacturing companies.

“Our business is founded on the dual policies of continuous development of products and an undaunted drive to expand our markets” said Sean Smith the company’s CEO.

Angela Musson-Smith Detectamet’s Managing Director and President explained “When my husband and I started our business in 2003 we could only dream of being honoured by an award such as this. Sean and I are so grateful to our staff, suppliers and local service companies who have helped us to fulfill our hopes and make our dreams come true.”

The timing of this award added further impetus to Detectamet’s exporting plans. The following month the company opened another office in the USA which has allowed Detectamet to service its growing list of North American customers more efficiently.

Only one other company based in East Yorkshire has won such recognition in the past five years and Detectamet hope its success will encourage other small and medium enterprises in the county to grasp the opportunities of exporting.

The Detectamet stationary range has been developed for food processing and similar applications. Made from metal detectable X-Ray visible polypropylene materials which are high impact resistant. Detectamet products, equipment and materials are suitable for packaging and food contact. Our products meet the requirements of the acts, regulations and orders applicable in Europe and the United Kingdom relating to goods supplied including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:• 1935/2004 - Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food, and all subsequent amendments (and

their transposition into National Law).• 2023/2006 - Good Manufacturing Practice for Materials and Articles Intended to Contact with Food, and all

subsequent amendments (and their transposition into National Law).Overall Migration Limits are available for the majority of our products. All our inks are non toxic, meeting the requirements of ISO12757-2 (The International Organization for Standardization published standards for ball point and roller ball pens). Declarations of conformity can be issued for all products.

Detectable Economy Refillable Retractable PenThe new Standard Economy Pen from Detectamet incorporates all the basic requirements needed to reduce the risks of product contamination by using detectable equipment. This refillable and retractable pen is available with a blue, black, red or green basic ink in an all metal refill. The blue shell and end cap are made from a plastic polymer that offers double detectability which means that all of the pen, or broken pieces can be identified by standard metal detectors and X-ray systems. Pressing the strong pocket clip will initiate retraction and the ridged grip improves the writers hold on the pen.

Detectable Tape MeasureDetectamet have developed a unique detectable and retractable tape measure for use in food production environments. The 5m/16ft measure is enclosed in a resilient plastic case that is both Metal and X-Ray Detectable.

There are two types of tape. The basic tape is made from oiled steel and offers metric measurement. The alternative is a heavy duty stainless steel tape marked for both imperial and metric measurement.

You’ll never need to buy a pack of staples again with the Detectamet Staple-less Stapler. Fasten up to 10 sheets of paper without the use of a conventional metal staple. Rogue pieces of metal in finished products continue to be an issue in the food industry. The simple solution is to make the food processing areas into staple free zones. However, unstapled essential documents coming into or going out of these areas can be a challenge.

Detectamet have resolved the problems of loose sheets with their staple-less staplers. These simple machines mechanically cut and push a small tongue of paper through the sheets and into a slit so that the papers are securely stitched together. The result is no bits of metal and no loose pieces of paper.

Detectamet can manufacture a complete range of precision metal detector test pieces. Each calibrated test piece is color coded for simple visual verification and fitted with a calibrated and certified bearing to ISO9002 and AFBMA Calibration.

We have developed a range of test products for X-Ray Machines which includes low, medium and high density materials acting as the medium and combining these with test contaminants of varying densities.

With our experience of producing high quality test pieces for metal and X-ray detection in the food and pharmaceutical industries we have found it increasingly beneficial to our clients to make information easily available for quality assurance purposes. All Test Pieces are supplied with a full certificate of conformity which we will keep a record of for you for 3 years.

Each Test Piece has a number etched onto its side which relates back to the Certificate of Conformity supplied by the bearing manufacturer. When your Test Pieces are purchased from Detectamet our name will also be etched onto the Test Piece - allowing you or any member of staff to trace it back to us. Alternatively we can add your company name upon request.

From food processing and brewing, through distribution and storage to serving food, installing Detectamet stainless steel equipment brings unique benefits to the food and pharmaceutical industry.

One of the great advantages of the Detectamet stainless steel range is that it imparts no taste to the food/products that is prepared on it. Typical uses include kitchens, dairies, ham curing and fish storage. The grades used by Detectamet are 304, for ambient temperatures and low acid concentrations, and 316 for harsher environments. For example 304 is used in cheese and dairy production, but where salted (ham) products is being prepared 316 is used. In ice cream production /processing 316 is specified because strong anti-bacteriological cleaning and rinsing systems are used. A further advantage is that stainless steel is resistant to damage caused by condensation cycles in high humidity areas such as kitchens etc. The Detectamet range also incorporates the use of other suitable metals for food applications such as aluminum and brass. Declarations of conformity are available on request.

Stainless Steel Glove DispensersWaste and contamination are just two challenges for food processing management teams unless they establish storage and dispensing systems that are easy to find and firmly fixed for straight forward access. Detectamet’s new Stainless Steel Glove Dispensers help them to successfully meet these challenges. Made from high quality stainless steel they are supplied in four sizes to hold a single box of 100 gloves or up to four boxes loaded vertically. They can be screw mounted onto a wall where they will be easy to clean and sanitize.

Additional varieties include a single box dispenser that has a bar hook to hang from a pipe, bar or the top of a panel. Another option is a single box that is enclosed with a front oval exit and a small side access to allow for replacement of an empty box.

KEY FEATURES

Detectasil® from Detectamet is a detectable Silicone Sealant/Caulk that can be ‘seen’ by metal and X-ray detection systems in the food industry. The sealant is used in structural fitting and equipment installation and reduces the risk of undetected contamination of food products.

It is available in white or blue, and the 310ml tube fits standard applicators. The detectable additive tastes nasty to rodents and deters them from eating the sealant after application.
