Short Term Mission Trip Scholarships
From 2015 through 2019 people from Messiah have gone on a short term mission trip. Has God placed on your heart an urge to go on one yourself? If so, but you don’t know where to go, help is available. You can look at several LCMS mission trips to S. America, Africa, Eu-rope and N. America on this website: https://servenow.lcms.org/#s=1.
Maybe you would rather serve closer to home with a servant event to help people in your community? Servant events typically help people who need help with painting, raking, home repair, auto repair, etc. These events are typically organized by the volunteers themselves.
Messiah offers one-time scholarships to help members finance short term mission trips and/or servant events. Scholarships typically help with travel, housing or materials. If the Lord has put the idea of a short term mission trip or organizing a servant event on your heart, take advantage of this!
To get more info or financial assistance for a short term ministry trip or a servant event, please contact Ron Bardal (651-633-9238), Steve Pickel (651-343-5015) or Pastor Steensma (763-784-1786).
If you’d rather contribute to the scholarship fund to help someone else go, include a donation in an offering envelop; use the “Other” line and write, “Mission Scholarship Fund.”

Pastor’s Corner – January 2020
New Year’s Resolution
Did you know that, according to research, 60% of people make New Year’s resolutions? I am certainly part of that group. Are you? Most resolutions usually focus on improving one’s physical health; lose weight, lower the cholesterol, quit smoking, etc. According to the same research, only 8% of people keep their resolutions. I wish I was part of that group. How about you?
I wonder what would happen if we thought seriously about New Year’s resolutions that focused on our spiritual health? Individually we would set goals dealing with reading God’s Word, attending worship, and even going to a bible study. All fantastic, and Godly goals! But what about as a church? What would a New Year’s resolution for Messiah look like?
This past fall we spent 40 days in the Red Letter Challenge. What an amazing experi-ence that was. During the month of December, we looked at the prophets of the Old Testament as they spoke of God’s love before the Red Letters. So now what?
I’d like to suggest that the challenge is not over. In fact, it has only begun. During the months of January and February we will be looking at Messiah’s 2020 Vision for Living the Red Letters. In other words, how do we want to identify what it is we do at Messiah. The RLC used the words; Being, Forgiving, Serving, Giving and Going. What three or four words would we use to describe Messiah? That’s what we want to talk about.
So, there is a New Year’s resolution for you, for me and for all of us, “should you choose to accept it!” Many blessings on the New Year!

MESSIAH’S COLUMBARIUM
Messiah’s columbarium, located on the southeast side of
the building, honors current and former members and
their families who have chosen to have their cremated
remains inurned in perpetual rest on the church grounds.
The columbarium has 72 niches, which can hold one or
two urns.
For additional information, please contact a member of
the columbarium committee:
Kirby Ehrreich (651)280-8916
Pam Groscost (763)350-2721
Aneita and Lee Hitzeman (612)849-0724
Carl Schwanbeck (763)767-7421
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
On Saturday, December 14, nine boxes of food were distributed to less fortunate members of
Messiah and the surrounding communities. In addition, fifty-two fruit baskets were delivered to
shut-in members and congregational members who suffered a loss during the past year. My sin-
cere gratitude goes to those volunteers whose names appear below. It’s also important to say
“thank you” to the many members of Messiah who responded so generously to our appeal for
last minute funds for this ministry.

XYZ-Our annual BUNCO and potluck will be coming in January. Bunco is a simple dice game taking approximately two minutes to learn (probably less). It's a fun afternoon in our dreary January. Date and time will be in the bulletin and a sign up sheet on the bulletin board-just for a possible count.
Retired, semi retired, if you have never attended an XYZ (extra years of zest) event, this is a good way to get acquainted. Welcome and the food is always delicious.

STEWARDSHIP
PLANNING FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE
Many people don’t like to face up to their future needs and goals. Education for the kids? A new house?
Retirement? Travel? An Emergency? It is important to take responsibility and set goals to paper in order
to help you to stay focused. You need more than an attitude of “Wouldn’t it be nice if…” or “I’d really like
to have…” A goal is a measurable objective toward which you believe God wants you to move. A goal is a
motivator and helps to keep your from being sidetracked. A goal should be attainable and include dead-
lines.
With realistic financial goals, you can measure progress. The following are examples of goals that show
cost and timeframe:
1. Provide one child with four years of college education at a cost today of $12,000 beginning in the year
2004.
2. Buy a new lawn mower in 8 months at a cost of $395.
3. Pay off credit card debt of $1900 by the end of the year.
Realistic goals do several things:
They establish a framework for financial stability.
They hel0p you use your income to best advantage.
They help you to accept the reality of your particular situation.
You become an initiator rather than a responder.
You increase the probability of reaching your goals.
In setting goals, you need to start by asking. “What is important to me?” “What is God’s plan for me?”
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans
to give your hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
Four reasons people don’t set goals:
1. They don’t know what they want.
2. They don’t believe goal-setting works.
3. They don’t know how to set goals.
They don’t want to be held accountable.
In setting goals, you will avoid waking up one day to find that you have to borrow to meet a goal such as
education or equity for a home. Goals keep changing and need to be checked every year.

BLOOD DRIVE
AT MESSIAH FEBRUARY 4, 2020
We will be having a Red Cross Blood Drive here at Messiah on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. If you
are planning to donate blood here, you should not donate elsewhere after December 11, 2019.
We will call the people who signed up to give at the last Blood Drive so that they can confirm
their appointment time or change that time or cancel.
We will have opportunities for everyone to get appointments on 2 Sundays in January between
worship services here at Messiah. You may also get an appointment by going online at
www.givebloodgivelife.org
The entire staff of Messiah will be attending the Best
Practices for Ministry conference this February! This
was a FABULOUS growth event last year and we are
so excited for the ideas we will gain in ALL of the areas
of ministry here at Messiah.
We are seeking help to cover light janitorial duties
(guided by Ron and Dave) and phone answering while
we are gone! If you have some time to give Feb. 19,
20, or 21, please sign up in the office and we will get
you any information you need.
Thank you for your help!
