FROM THE EDITOR...Well... What a week it has been since our last edition! First of all, we want to let all our readers know that everything in this edition was true and correct at the time of going to print. With so many changes and updates daily, we are struggling to keep up. We will do our best to ensure you get the facts as best as we can, but we don’t want to harp on and on about COVID-19. In saying that, please bear in mind that this edition will have a few things you need to know with “Stage 1" of the pandemic response announced.

On Monday 23rd March, 2020 at midday, “Stage 1" began. This was in response to many Australians not taking the spread of the virus seriously, the Prime Minister closed all entertainment venues, clubs, pubs, bars, nightclubs and more, with cafes and restaurants to trade with take away and delivery only. Also, that Australians must only shop when it is needed, and when in public, use social distancing to help reduce the spread.Queensland’s Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, spoke recently in a media conference about what it means for Queenslanders. In a condensed version, everything the Prime Minister said, but with emphasis to stay in our own suburbs, and that this is not a time for holidaying. No going to stroll at the local shopping centre. No meeting for a coffee or lunch. No dining out. No going to the beach. No going to the park. No camping. Mention of these school holidays coming up and that they in fact will not be school holidays. We, as a nation must adhere to what “rules” are being put in place in order to stop our COVID-19 numbers rising dramatically. Many are ridiculing the decision to keep schools open as contradictory, and we have spoken to many teachers who are under a lot of stress due to this decision. They are on the front line along with our retail stores and takeaway food employees and doctors and all medical staffing that goes with them.

This is something that is going to impact our lives for many months to come yet. We can’t help but think that if we follow instructions given by the government, this virus may not impact our country as it has over seas. What other choice do we have, right?

Many businesses have already shut completely, many employees are now unemployed. Centrelink is being bombarded with calls and people in their inundating their centres trying to make sure they have money to eat, pay bills, keep a roof over their heads. At this time, we feel that we need to have faith that our government is going catch us. The stimulus packages haven’t been finalised. There is a lot to consider to ensure all Australians are ok. Many more announcements will come. Banks have already offered freezing loan repayments. There will be more to come too. We don’t really have much choice but to wait as each announcement reveals who gets what next.

We had intentions of printing a four page spread which consisted of all the businesses still open, but as the days got closer to time of print, it became harder to keep up. Instead, we want to remind all our readers that we need to keep supporting our local businesses. Keep them from closing down too. Almost all our cafes and restaurants are trading with take away and delivery. Your favourite café, your favourite breakfast place, your favourite places to dine.... all still open, trading with minimal staff and all implementing what needs to be implemented to keep their staff and patrons safe.Yes, we are all suffering with wage loss or worse, but if you can afford a take away coffee, or a quick bite of fish and chips, get it delivered and have a small enjoyment with something so simple. And don’t forget our trades and services out there struggling too. They are all still operating and implementing cleanliness for your safety too. In fact, our car is being serviced while we speak. We will do our best to help ALL our local businesses when and where we can.

And now, we start to wonder, that by the time this edition is in your lap, will the schools be closed and we will in effect go into “Stage 2"? We ask all of our readers, no matter what your beliefs are right now, to take the time to breathe, remember we are avoiding spreading this virus, and look after yourselves as well as others when in public. We ask that you keep an eye on our elderly where possible and are they ok? Social distancing is serious and it does make it hard to do many of our daily routine things, but we just have to alter our lives and not cease it altogether in a complete lock down as we have seen over seas. Social distancing has proven to help contain a virus so let’s give it a go! When we were shopping for essentials on Monday, it was pleasant to see that everyone was moving around each other and doing a good job of social distancing. No body seemed stressed or angry. There was no toilet paper but that ridiculous saga will end soon and shops will go back to normal once everyone realises there is enough for all! We don’t even want to talk about that drama!

So... let’s get into this week’s edition shall we? While trying to continue to support the community, and with the news changing so rapidly, we had to make the decision to shrink this week’s edition down... but don’t worry, it won’t be followed on to next week’s edition. These are testing times for us all. Reach out if you need help, and remember readers, be kind to one another. We are in this for the long haul. Let’s come out the other end of it stronger, better and smarter... together.

A FEEL GOOD STORY AMONGST THE STRESSSAMIOS PLUMBING HOLD A CHARITY EVENT FOR MUCH NEEDED FUNDS

RFS Representative Thomas Matthews, Amanda and Byron Cann from Wildlife Rescue QLD

Well for some warm and pleasant news, we are going to tell you yet another tale of more locals who are donating time and money to help others in need.

Let’s go back to the beginning of this year. When the south was burning, and the north was flooding. A young couple were sitting on their back deck one Sunday afternoon drinking wine over a cheese platter, discussing the impact the fires had on their friends and families in many of the areas evacuated and how scams were already taking place to steal people’s donations or use the money to filter into the wrong places.

We would like to introduce you to Aaron (Branch Manager) and Amanda (Builders Coordinator) Shepherd. Owners of Samios Plumbing North Lakes. Amanda quickly became their Event/Party Planner and they began to brain storm ideas.

What did they come up with?A 4 Man Ambrose Charity Golf Day! With all money raised divided between the Caboolture based Rural Fire Service Qld and the Narangba based Wildlife Rescue Qld with a guarantee that the money will go directly to them.

February 28 they took to the golf course fora Shot Gun Start at 12.30pm. Groups of 4 battled the course to win any of the On the Green competitions, which were: Nearest the Pin, Longest Drive, Nearest on Approach and a Putting Competition

Please note: The amounts shown on the novelty cheques in these photos do not represent the entire amount raised. On theevening of the event, this was what was tallied as raised, however the true dollar amount raised was more, as stated inthe article.

About Leonie

North Lakes Counselling Services

time with him. To tell the truth, I'm a bit disappointed in everyone as it seems they can just freeze him out after all this time in the family. This brother in law has helped every family member out in one way or another over the years and they are just going to drop him like a hot rock and no one is mourning the loss of him. Leonie - What is your opinion? Linda/Redcliffe

Hi Linda,I understand your concerns and your feelings of loss. When someone marries, for all intents and purposes they marry whole family. When someone divorces, the blood family often divorce that person also. This can be quite sad because for the most part the extended family have not been involved in the conflict, are on good terms and often love the in law very much and as in your case the grief that the extended family go through can seem very unfair. However, in my view the truth is there is a reason why this happens. It involves loyalty and a future history of the blood relative and the desire to not complicate things any more than they already are. Now even though I do understand your feelings I also feel that you may not have not given good thought to this situation or your actions and I believe your actions could be considered reckless. Firstly you say that you have no romantic feelings but you can't guarantee that you or he won't develop a romantic connection over time and I can tell you that over the years I have seen this time and time again. At other times some people

may love the family so much that they will remarry into the family with another family member to keep ties with the family so do rethink this whole “just friend's” position. The other consideration would be that as much as you think you know your brother in law, your sister knows him much better. There may have been issues for a very long time and you don't know the gravity of those issues. Only the people in a relationship truly know what is going on between them and any feedback given to others is likely to be bias. You say that you have not been close to your sister and there could have been very good reasons for her leaving that she has not disclosed to you. Another consideration could be that your dislike for your sister may be stirring unrelated issues which are fuelling your need to get involved so do reflect on this. Yet another dynamic to consider is that as time goes by, both your sister and he will re-partner. Do you really think that his new girlfriend is going to want you, his ex sister in law hanging around? I feel that the friendship would end one way or the other so I would encourage you to consider the impact of your actions long term on your family of origin because any upset you continue to cause could mean long term fracture. This is not your marriage and I would question your right to cast judgement on how your sister manages her separation. If it were me, I would distance myself from my brother in law telling him that I wish him the best but am going to give him time to grieve his loss and get on with his life.

Hello Leonie, I have been reading your column for years and now I need some of your sage advice. I am one of three sisters, I'm 33 and my sisters are in their forties. Here is some background about what's upsetting me. My eldest sister has broken up with her husband of 22 years. He is devastated and she is planning to live in Germany for 2 years and will be leaving in February next year. I feel terribly for my brother in law. He is a good man and she just left without a bye or leave. This sister and I have never been close and I had no idea that the marriage was in trouble. I have called him and had dinner over there a few times basically providing a shoulder to cry on. I never said anything as I figured she didn't care. A couple of days ago she found out that I have been helping my brother in law through this very tough time and demanded that I stay out of things and not talk to him again or go over to their house. I feel that this is ridiculous because this man has been my brother in law since I was a kid and I love him like a sibling. Why should I be expected to cut him out of my life just because my sister has selfishly declared that she does not want any of the family to have a relationship with him? I don't have any romantic feelings for him what so ever but I do care for him and worry that he is all alone. He does have his mother but when my sister left he also lost all of our family which is not fair in the least. I have told my sister that she can go jump and that I will do as I please and this has caused a big rift not only between her and me but also with mum and dad because they feel that it is wrong to spend

‘till next week. Leonie

NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO GET YOUR AIR CONDITIONER UNIT CLEANED

Steve from A Breath of Clean Air is a local North Lakes resident who is helping fight germs with his air conditioning cleaning service.

We had Steve in to clean our split system units and we couldn’t believe our eyes. Above, you have the before photos. First Steve takes the cover and filters off the unit. He then places a bib around the unit to catch all dirt, grime, build up and cleaning fluids.

A high pressure cleaner with special anti bacterial cleaner is used to remove all the mould, dust, and mildew you can find, hiding in all the bits you don’t normally see, and definitely cannot clean yourself. Below are the after photos.Once complete, Steve puts your system back together again and you will be surprised at the difference your air conditioner is when running. We always clean our filters on a weekly basis in summer

and we still got better running from it when Steve was done. With all the social distancing and isolation at this present time, call Steve to book your air conditioning clean now.
