Principal’s ReportCommunity partnerships, enriching young lives: Among the many partnerships we

have with local community groups that support our learners, I would like to focus on

three that are new initiatives this year. “Onwards and Upwards” is a self development

and mentor program for Year 9 girls through Fair Go Australia. Our second group will

graduate this term. Kit Berkelmans from PCYC runs Rock and Water for boys in Year 8

and 9. This is a well renowned worldwide program that teaches resilience through a rock

or water approach. And thirdly, our IGNITE Sports Academy allows junior students to

develop the foundations of strength and conditioning, and access fitness professionals

for advice and assessment.

David Friis, Lifetime Achievement Award:

Past Principal of DBSHS, David Friis (2010-2015) was honoured posthumously by his

Principal colleagues in May. It was an emotional moment to hear his son Jake Friis (also

a teacher), speak of his dad and how he engaged with everyone to be well loved and

respected. His legacy lives on within the fabric of DBay High. His sayings are

remembered every day and we honour him by striving to model;

Concerns about vaping: We are really concerned about a massive increase in students

vaping this term. We treat vaping like we do smoking – it is a serious health and

behaviour issue. We have sent clear messages to our students that consequences can

include suspension. We also have responsibility to further educate our community on this

serious issue. Studies show that most liquids contain nicotine, even when they say they

don’t and that their sweet flavours target children. The health effects, including addiction,

are starting to show lung damage early. I encourage caregivers to be really vigilant and

support us in trying to discourage our young people from this scourge.

Uniform: Students who are in incorrect uniform during Term 2 will be required to change into correct

uniform at the office each day. Please contact the school if you are having difficulty in providing correctuniform for your student.

Attendance: All students are required to attend every day. Please notify the school of absences by

phoning 3897 2222 before 9am. A medical certificate is required for absences of 3 days or more.Recharge: Students will be referred for Recharge if they are required to undertake additional study/ tutorial

time. A teacher will notify parents and carers of a Recharge referral by Wednesday afternoon. Pleasesupport the teachers by reminding your child on Thursday if they are required to stay.

Food for School: Parents are reminded that energy drinks are not to be brought to school by students.

What's Deadly @ DBay National Sorry Day &

National Reconciliation WeekWe recently observed National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week

(NRW). National Sorry Day ceremony was respectfully lead by students.

We were thrilled by the re-emergence of a student dance group that

performed Gurri Gynida Nami – this group started as 4 students wanting

to dance and quickly grew to 9 on the day.

Testimony of a member of the Stolen Generations published in

the “Bringing them Home Report” was read, other students lowered the

flags to half mast during the minute of silence. The ceremony concluded

with a poem by Pauline McLeod, a member of the Stolen Generation

being read and an invitation to the whole school to add a dedication to

the Stolen Generation and their families by creating a Sea of Hands at

the entrance of the school. Many thanks to staff of the ARTIE Academy

who hosted a BBQ after the ceremony.

The theme for Nation Reconciliation Week 2021 was “More than a word. Reconciliation takes

action.” During National Reconciliation Week several activities were run for students, these

included bracelet weaving, paper fish inspired by Torres Strait Islander traditional weaving, grass skirt

making, mural painting, a walk through and gathering of ideas for the redevelopment of the Yarning

Circle. Students have drawn up a proposal for the redevelopment of the yarning circle and this will go

to the community for feedback.

Our LFL program delivered thought provoking, true history information and activities about significant

dates such as the 1967 Referendum and Mabo Day. Thanks to Ms Caruso for creating the LFL

lessons.

The school assembly was treated to a performance by the student dance group, Aunty Deb Nagas

delivered an emotional address about Reconciliation and our mural was unveiled. Well done to all the

students and staff who contributed to its creation, it looks so deadly!

SAVE THE DATE!! Community Yarning Circles will be held Wednesday 23 June

at Mindle Bygul Aboriginal Corporation – 5 Bisschop Street Deception Bay. Times of the yarning

circles will be at 10am, 12 noon and 4pm. Our school community wants to embrace the theme of

National Reconciliation Week and put some plans into action with your help. We encourage people to

attend one of the sessions, as we would love to hear your suggestions and feedback.

Year 7 & 8 NewsOur year 7 and 8 students have been engaging in conversations on their year level

assemblies about attendance. This focus on attendance will carry through for the rest of the

year. Research shows that high attendance correlates with successful outcomes at school

and beyond. Students talked about how their individual attendance results affected their class

attendance which in turn affected our whole school attendance rate. Our school goal is 90%

attendance. Students who are at 100% attendance go into a weekly draw to receive a prize

on year level assemblies and students with attendance above 90% are celebrated in other

ways throughout the year.

Our year 7s had a special visit from a Police Officer on their assembly in week 8 to discuss

various legal ramifications for online bullying, physical assault and image sharing. Our year 7s

listened with maturity and asked interesting and thoughtful questions. A big thank you to our

wonderful Year Level Leader, Tamarah McTainsh for organising our special guest.

In year 8 news, our adventurous year level leader, Mrs Salmucci organised a cohort tunnelball

competition which was a hoot. Students were working together, showing persistence,

leadership and determination to ensure their LFL class won. Well done to all those who

participated.

Year 9 & 10 NewsAs we continue on our Middle school journey it has been great to see culture build within each

cohort. Both Year Level Leaders have prioritised building positive relationships with both staff and

students this term to ensure positive outcomes for students and support for teachers.

Students have been working on making positive behaviour choices and ensuring they are making

decisions that show integrity and students to be the best they can be.

In grade 9, students have been working with our school nurse on sex education sessions to ensure

they are prepared with correct and relevant information. Select students have also been involved in

a Coaching Young People For Success workshops with Mrs Opacic to help them select meaningful

and purposeful subjects in Grade 10.

In grade 10 the cohort continues to work together on their weekly challenges to increase teamwork,

attendance and school spirit. It has been wonderful to watch students shine and be acknowledged

each week on Year Level Parade with Ms Crone.

Please continue to talk to your student about the importance of study as we enter the final weeks of

assessment window.

Senior NewsAs we build towards the end of term ensuring students are attending regularly and submitting

quality assessment is our focus. To support understanding of attendance our Year Level Leaders

and Learning for Life teachers focus on sharing regular attendance updates as part of weekly Year

Level Assemblies. To support our assessment focus each lesson, at this point of term, teachers are

working with students to ensure they are producing beautiful work to achieve the best results

possible.

In Years 11 and 12 the state-wide rules set by the governing body, the Queensland Curriculum and

Assessment Authority (QCAA), states that students must submit assessment ‘on or before the due

date unless there are factors beyond student’s control’. Factors beyond a student’s control explicitly

covers situations such as bereavement and illness, but does not include events such as family

holidays, weddings or travel for personal events.

If a student is unable to submit assessment on or before the due date they are to download the

Illness and Misadventure form from the school website (www.deceptionbayshs.com.au, Senior

Schooling tab), complete and submit this with appropriate supporting written evidence for the

absence. Without this evidence extending due dates or rescheduling exams is not possible. This

will impact students earning points toward their QCE and may impact their ability to graduate.

Primary Popstars

Talofa - Samoan Language Week Celebration

This year, we launched our very first Primary Popstars Program. In this

program, we develop performance skills with students in years 4-6 in

the Deception Bay Community. Students attend free weekly dance

and/or singing workshops at our school. We are also excited to

welcome back our past students – Tearna Selby (Popstars Dance),

Some BIG events have been happening this term for

BAYCOIN with a visit from Barry Lockyer, our kicking

competition and some fresh voices in our Karaoke Party.

Remember to purchase your Winter Dance ticket from the

office for only 10 BAYCOIN. The event will be held in the

PA block, Friday week 9 1pm-4pm.

Why study the Arts? Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about

studying a Music, Dance, Drama, Film & Media or Visual Art subjects in

senior years. The Arts are complex subjects that enhance students’ creative

and critical thinking while exploring society, culture and the world around us.

These subjects prepare students for a variety of employment opportunities,

as creative and critical thinking are essential in many current and future jobs

(e.g. law, science, engineering, IT & design). The Arts open many different

career pathways. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact

Chantelle Steel – Head of Performing Arts & Industrial Design and/or Vikki

Caruana – Head of Visual Arts.

Talofa. Samoan Language Week celebrations started on assembly in week 7 with Perenise

addressing the school assembly in Samoan and translated by Afioga to the assembly. Setu and

the student leaders lead the singing of a prayer and many students on assembly sang along.

Senior students ran a Samoan game called Lape and several junior students worked on language

cards that will be displayed in classrooms next term.

At DBay we are very excited to be one of a few schools to be running the Brisbane Broncos

Pasifika Pilot Program. The lessons are delivered by inspirational Pacific Islander and Maori

mentors and addresses topics such as health and wellbeing, post-secondary opportunities,

engagement and leadership skills. The lessons are engaging, challenging, creative and a lot of

fun in a safe learning environment. Some very lucky Y10 and Y11 students have been selected

for the program based on recommendations by DPs and YLL's

Reconciliation Week

LOTE Department

Humanities DepartmentOur Business students in years 8 and 9 have

had a busy term leading up to the culmination of

their work last week. Students designed their

own businesses, presented a pitch to gain

investment and then ran these businesses from

the marketing to students and/or teachers stage,

the development of products and the sale of

their products. Students all presented

successfully on our marketplace day and have

raised profits for donation to their selected

charities. Fantastic work from the Business

students!

Performing Arts DepartmentOur Music Excellence Day at DBSHS was a fantastic

success! Wonderful students from Moreton Downs SS,

Deception Bay SS and Deception Bay North SS came to

our school to work on Instrumental Music for the day. We

created MEGA ensembles with all students participating in

Concert Band/String Ensemble, Choir and Percussion

Ensemble. Thank you to everyone who came along to work

with us. It was wonderful to see DBSHS students teaching

younger students tips and tricks for their instruments and

making music together. This was a fantastic opportunity to

learn and make music together. Thank you to our student

leaders, Ms Ritter and Mr Ashton for making this day

possible. Keep up the beautiful work!

Students in Year 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 Japanese on Wednesday of this week participated in a

Japanese Culture Incursion. Students learned the art of Japanese dancing, Taiko Drumming

and enjoyed a delicious Japanese Bento Box of Karaage Chicken or Vegetarian for lunch! All

students had a wonderful time. A big thank you to Miss Tomoko Nagano and Mrs Allison Dunn

for facilitating the activities on the day. We will be running a similar opportunity next term on the

4th of August for different Japanese classes so keep an eye out for more information.

Next Step

There are now changes to the front of the school and Government

Street as part of council plans to assist with drop off and pick ups.

Please take note of the new areas for drop off and pick up as per

the pictures attached. These are now at the end of the drive thru on

Phillip Parade zones and zones have been added to Government

Street. Students are to cross at the marked crossings only and

parents are to only pull into designated zones. Any concerns,

please don’t hesitate to contact the school office.

We welcomed back the 2020 graduates to

hear about their journey as they move

beyond their high school education. This

event was a great opportunity to

acknowledge their successes and offer

support for their continued journey. With

representatives students in

attendance were able to connect with

support and take some time to share with their previous teachers what

they have been up to since graduation.
