Welcome to the 2018–2019 school year at the Kingsway Regional School District. A new school year always is energizing — just brimming with exciting possibilities. I think you will see what I mean as you read through this issue of Inside Kingsway.

Busy SummerEven as we begin a new school year, we have to acknowledge an extraordinarily busy summer for the district, our students, and faculty.

First of all, as I am sure you all know by now, as a result of our collective efforts, Governor Murphy signed a new law at the end of July that will modernize the school funding formula. This ensures Kingsway will receive the state aid it deserves.

On September 25, we held a special celebration to thank the passionate members of our community who worked so tirelessly and persistently to advocate for our schools. (See story on page 2.)

While laws were being signed, a pre-med summer program at Rowan University kept four Dragons very busy. These STEM students got to experience situations similar to those of first-year medical students. We are extremely proud that they were accepted into the intensive, four-week program that enabled them to take advantage of an amazing opportunity.

In fact, quite a few STEM students had exciting — and productive — times over the summer. Two of our students — through different programs in which they were involved — participated in the largest, all-women hackathon in New York City. One student won first place in the Best Hack for Food/Water/Shelter category with an app to help people prepare for a natural disaster. Other students attended a Naval Academy Summer Seminar, volunteered at the Physical Therapy Center at Jefferson Hospital, and served as a camp counselor at a New Jersey National Guard Youth Camp. (You can read about these and more on page 7.)

Our faculty were busy as well. Ms. Reena Ninan was named the 2018 Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year, New Jersey. We are so proud of her accomplishments!

On Tuesday, September 25, the District recognized a number of key officials who were integral in advocating for fair school funding and the sponsorship and passing of legislation last summer.

One of the highlights of the evening was the introduction of more than 40 new teachers and employees, the majority of whom were hired as a result of the additional $2.129 million dollars the district received this year.

Kingsway Superintendent Dr. Jim Lavender was joined at the podium by several students who had testified at an Assembly and/or Senate Hearing over the years, and represented the nearly 7,000 students from the Borough of Swedesboro and Townships of East Greenwich, South Harrison, Logan and Woolwich — the ultimate benefactors of the passing of Senate Bill 2. “Having them join me at the podium tonight is a reminder of why we fought so hard, for so long,” said Dr. Lavender.

The students, led by seniors Jackie Repp and Maddie Collins, thanked Senator Sweeney and the Board of Education for ensuring that they would have the resources moving forward, awarding them “Once a Dragon, Always a Dragon” t-shirts, symbolizing their status as honorary alumni.

“I am proud to say that Kingsway has been fortunate to have pulled together a core-group of passionate members of our community to tirelessly and persistently advocate for our schools to receive the state aid our growing districts have been promised since 2008, when the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA) was first adopted,” said Dr. Lavender.

He said he never imagined that the community’s political voice would connect with other voices from around the state to create “a formidable political movement.” Dr. Lavender said, “As a result of our collective efforts,

Gov. Murphy signed a new law, a law sponsored by Senate President Sweeney, to modernize the school funding formula on Tuesday, July 24th, ensuring Kingsway, and hundreds of districts like Kingsway, will receive the state aid it rightfully deserves!”

Dr. Lavender went on to say, “On behalf of our Board of Education, I want to extend our deepest appreciation to the many men, women, and students who have given so much of their personal time and energy over the years to attend public meetings, to call elected officials, to testify at state-wide hearings, and more.”

The District bestowed its highest honor — a Distinguished Service Award — on several prominent and key officials:

Stephen M. Sweeney, Senate PresidentJohn Burzichelli, NJ State AssemblyAdam Taliaferro, NJ State AssemblyTom Fromm, Mayor of SwedesboroJim Muelller, Board PresidentJennifer Cavallaro-Fromm, BOEDr. Michele Blair, BOEMia Randazzo, BOEDr. James J. Lavender, Superintendent

The Kingsway Regional Board of Education and Kingsway Education Foundation named scholarships after Senator Sweeney and Jennifer Cavallaro-Fromm: the Senate President Stephen M. Sweeney Public Service Award and the Jennifer Cavallaro-Fromm Impact Award. Both scholarships will be awarded annually to high school seniors.

Students had an opportunity to conduct and present research to family, faculty, and a local news crew. Students also collaborated in PBL, or problem-based learning, where they were given a hypothetical patient case, and they had to work together to come up with a differential diagnosis for the patient. The students also were given opportunities to dissect organs from humans, as well as pigs. They interacted with a plethora of physicians as well as patients.

“As a student who aspires to work in the medical field as a physician, I felt my love of medicine re-inspired,” said Zalak Modi. “I realized that medicine is where I truly want to be, regardless of the obstacles I may encounter along the way.”

She said she also valued the friends she made in her class and her relationship with Dr. Venkat, the supervisor.

Congratulations to each of you for your acceptance into the program; we commend your dedication to your passions!

experience as “fantastic”. “We spent each day learning new ways to incorporate and teach the STEM topics to our students,” said Ms. Moraca.

Plus, our Business Leadership Academy held its first summer seminar. Students found it to be unique, and said it was helpful in preparing them for their courses in Phase II. As part of the seminar, students were guests at the Rohrer College of Business at Rowan University, where they met with faculty members and were invited to judge the People’s Choice Award for the Summer Entrepreneurship Academy for High School.

As School BeginsThe Middle School started the year off by greeting faculty in a unique way. We welcomed new faculty in September as well, and everyone participated in the Week of Respect.

Even so early in the year, our sports teams really started out strong. The Field Hockey Team captured the Tri-County Conference Royal Division Championship, and both the Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams took the Tri-County Conference Royal Division Championships!

Of course, there is much more news in this issue. You can read about our Spotlight students, faculty, and staff, and gain an even greater sense of Dragon Pride.

Room in Glassboro, NJ. On Tuesday, they worked on campus on various projects with the theme of “How to Succeed in Business.” Wednesday was a day for networking and job shadowing at local businesses such as Farmers Insurance, Franklin Bank, Keller & Williams Realty, and Botto’s Italian Line Restaurant.

The highlight of the week happened on Thursday, when the students were guests at Rowan University Rohrer College of Business and met with several faculty members of this prestigious university’s Business School.

The students were invited to be judges for the People’s Choice Award for the Summer Entrepreneurship Academy for High School held at the University. This was an exciting and informative experience, because this group of Business Leadership students will be participating in this program next year as rising seniors.

On the last day, the students had the opportunity to reflect on the various learning activities and provide feedback to improve the program for the next year. It was an eventful week for our Business Leadership Academy students!

Student Ayden Magee noted, “My experience at our first Summer Seminar can be summed up with one word, ‘interesting’! It was fun and I can’t wait to do it again.”

“The Summer Seminar was really fun and engaging,” said BLA student Annie Manes. “It left me with a nice resume and valuable experiences. Overall it was a cool learning experience.”

We wish to express our gratitude to Ms. Patricia Conn and Ms. Vivian Cassidy who worked hard to make the summer memorable for our rising BLA juniors.

Shelby Dyer, Kingsway Regional Middle School student, successfully ran a charity softball tournament the weekend of October 6 to raise cancer awareness.

Shelby, along with best friend Olivia George, dedicated more than 50 hours to plan the event to achieve their Girl Scout Silver Award.

Shelby and Olivia also arranged for participation by vendors throughout weekend, including doctors from MD Anderson who conducted skin evaluations, and representatives from the American Cancer Society who distributed brochures on cancer prevention practices. The Chick-fil-A cow even made a special appearance!

The tournament, run in conjunction with Gloucester City Girls Softball/Little League, included 16 teams; both championship games went into extra innings! The NJ Mystics won the 14U bracket, and the Swedesboro/Logan Blue Jays won the 12U bracket.

Gloucester City Girls Softball/Little League donated proceeds from the event to Kingsway Regional High School senior, Abby Fox, who has overcome a life-threatening illness that was diagnosed in high school. Abby will be attending Ramapo College after graduation to pursue a career in nursing.

Before an audience of parents, students and school officials at the October Board of Education meeting, the Kingsway Education Association (KEA) made a generous donation to the Kingsway Education Foundation. The $3,000 is an unrestricted donation that will be used to support scholarships, mini-grants, and events sponsored by the Foundation.

Joe Kuppler, President of the KEA, told the packed audience that he was proud to be able to present the donation on behalf of his membership. “The KEA’s donation is greatly appreciated and demonstrates their members’ commitment to our students and programs,” said Dr. James J. Lavender, Superintendent of Schools and Foundation’s Executive Director. “It’s these sorts of donations that make the work of the Foundation possible.”

To date, the Foundation has donated nearly $200,000 in scholarships, awards, and program sponsorships. The Foundation is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization founded in 2010 to raise funds to support programs, equipment needs, and activities at Kingsway Regional high School and Middle School. Funding raised by the Foundation fills in the gaps for programs and activities that cannot be included in the school budget.

The Foundation comprises a dedicated group of parents, teachers, administrators, staff and community members. Additional volunteers always are welcomed and needed. To learn more about the Foundation, visit the District’s website at www.krsd.org/kef.

The ASM Materials Education Foundation provides for the advancement of scientific and engineering knowledge through its support of education and

research at the high school level. This year, Ms. Moraca, a STEM Academy teacher, applied and was accepted into the seminar.

During this one-week workshop at Rowan University, teacher participants learned how to apply the basics of Materials Science Technology into classes for high school students. The experience also helps to create ongoing partnerships in science, offering a chance for educators at various levels to collaborate and consult to shape courses for years to come.

The industry presenters and college professors for the seminar provided a unique perspective of how science research and material science is applied in the world of work. Labs offered participants a glimpse into the potential future careers that can be available to our STEM Academy students. This year’s focus was to ensure participants were able to work hands-on with metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites to develop a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials in modern life.

“The entire week’s schedule was fantastic and filled with incredible experiences,” said Ms. Moraca. “We spent each day learning new ways to incorporate and teach the STEM topics to our students. We also had the chance to take a tour of Rowan University’s CREATES program, which is the Center for Research and Education in Advanced Transportation Engineering Systems. This allowed us a chance to witness students from freshmen in chemistry through doctorate-level students working on research.”

Ms. Moraca already has started to incorporate much of what she learned during that time in the classroom with her students. “As I reflect on this experience, it was one of the best professional development opportunities in my 16 years of teaching,” said Ms. Moraca. “This camp served to increase my experience into teaching engineering concepts into the STEM seminar, chemistry classes, and the possibility to create a new course in Materials Science.”

Thank you, Ms. Moraca, for continuing to value your own professional development to influence the lives of your students!

Successful integration of technology into the classroom can lead to significant improvement in student

productivity and engagement. Technology has the power to transform teaching by linking students to a variety of resources that personalize their learning environment.

Ms. Allison Shelley, who has been a Kingsway Dragon since 2005, is an educator who consistently integrates technology into the everyday classroom to both support her diverse learners and to create a highly engaging classroom atmosphere.

In her daily instruction, students are accessing resources through Google Classroom and Google sites, gaining access to advanced texts through audio files, assessing their knowledge through Google Forms, and engaging in review activities through Kahoot and EdPuzzle, to name just a few.

Ms. Shelley is a Level 2 Certified Google Educator. A Google Certified Educator must pass a rigorous certification exam that verifies their ability to use Google products such as Google Classroom, Google Drive and YouTube in the classroom setting.

As of 2018, the total number of Level 1 and Level 2 certifications was reported at 33,500 from 81 countries.

Ms. Shelley’s Level 2 status indicates that she is able to successfully integrate a wide range of Google for Education tools and other technologies in order to

transform teaching practices. She promotes and models the effective use of digital tools, leverages learning models to personalize learning, analyzes and interprets student data, designs interactive curricula, provides her students with access to texts via multiple modalities, and gives students a creative and innovative “voice” through the use of technology.

Her infusion of technology is certainly impressive; however, this aspect of her instruction is certainly not the only highlight of Ms. Shelley’s classroom. First and foremost, Ms. Shelley aims to create a nurturing and empowering classroom environment; one in which every learner feels valued and able to contribute something meaningful.

Ms. Shelley emphasizes and celebrates growth and aims to instill in her students a growth mindset. She recognizes that making mistakes is a valuable part of learning, and she works hard to get her students to see that perseverance through the initial mistakes is ultimately the key to their success.

A model example of an educator, Ms. Shelley, takes pride in the use of technology and values the process of learning. Currently serving as Department Chair for the Special Education Department, Lead Intervention & Referral Services Team member and website developer, and Technology Coordinator and Presenter for various professional development opportunities, Ms. Shelley proves that she shines both inside and outside of the four walls of her classroom.

We are proud to recognize Ms. Allison Shelley as our October Spotlight Teacher!

CURRICULUM NEWS & NOTES

Ms. Anna Marie BittmannWe are only two months into the school year and there is one Dragon who sticks out as a perfect candidate for October’s Support Staff Employee. For the past 12 years, Anna Marie Bittmann has dedicated herself to providing delicious meals to our Kingsway students with a smile. In addition, she has willingly volunteered her Friday evenings working the football games for the past four years.

Ms. Bittmann is a conscientious worker who is committed to the program’s success not only by excelling at her daily responsibilities, but by working various evening catering functions and staying after school to sell food to students after last bell. She has a strong understanding of the food service department and is dedicated to ensuring the program remains sustainable.

There’s a quote by Elizabeth Andrews, “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” This is true of Ms. Bittmann, who has a big heart and strong commitment to our District, specifically to the Kingsway Education Foundation (KEF).

She can always be counted on to volunteer her time at the concession stand during Friday evening football games. She enjoys contributing and knows how important the KEF is to students; the Foundation appreciates her efforts. She is a perfect example of someone going above and beyond!

Congratulations to Ms. Bittmann for being October’s Support Staff Employee!

Some of our Dragons were able to participate in summer learning experiences that enabled them to continue to explore their passions.

Senior STEM student Anjana Chamarthi attended ByteHacks, the largest all-women hackathon in New York City. In 24 hours, she created and presented a mobile app, using Google APIs that help prepare people for natural disasters. Her project won first place in the Best Hack for Food/Water/Shelter category.

Bhavana Charmarthi, a sophomore STEM student, attended Kode with Klossy, a two-week program founded by Karlie Kloss for girls ages 13 to18. During the experience, Bhavana learned Ruby, HTML/CSS, and was able to network with other girls interested in computer science. She also attended Bytehacks. With her Klossy friends, Bhavana designed a website for the American Red Cross volunteers and EMTs to offer their patient’s quick medical assistance on

the go. The website highlights include the importance of simple medical advice for a volunteer or an EMT faced with an emergency. The group of students won “The Best Health Hack” from among 37 other groups who entered the contest. Another senior STEM student, Madison Meyers, attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar. This 6-day event at the USNA exposes students to the life of a midshipman with morning workouts, classes, and rigorous squad team-building activities — following the schedule the midshipmen keep. Madison also attended ALA Jersey Girls State, where 400 girls from all over the state of New Jersey came together to form a state government. They incorporated everything from the local government level up to the governor, including campaigning and hearing from a plethora of guest speakers.

Senior STEM student Kyle Daugherty served as a counselor at a week-long New Jersey National Guard Youth Camp. This sleep-away camp is for students ages 9–12 whose parents/guardians are in the National Guard.

Alexis Juliano, a junior STEM student, volunteered all summer at the Physical Therapy Center at Jefferson Hospital. While another junior STEM student, Jack Fitzpatrick, took a course at Drexel University as part of the High School Scholars Program.

Freshman Peyton Rieger worked in a 3-week volunteer position at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she had the opportunity to work with doctors and nurses. She even went into an operating room with a nurse anesthetist to see how they work and help with patients.

9/11 Memorial Stair ClimbIn remembrance of the events of September 11th, two Kingsway students — Michael Tanzzola and Shea Walton — who also are East Greenwich volunteer firefighters, did a 110-flight stair climb in full firefighter gear.

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs are not timed race events, but a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on that fateful day.

Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories that comprised the World Trade Center.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The first week in October marked the Week of Respect at Kingsway. Each day, as a school, there was a focus on a different characteristic of respect, and students wore particular colors to represent the various characteristics of respect.

Students wore BLUE for FRIENDSHIP, GREEN for COMPASSION, GRAY for KINDNESS, NEON COLORS for FAIRNESS, and RED and BLACK to represent our UNITY as Dragons.

Additionally, the students were all invited to the west gym for a multimedia program entitled, Point of View. The program highlighted the importance of respecting everyone’s differences.

The Week of Respect was created to raise awareness and provide options to respond to bullying. Together, through #1DRAGON FAMILY, we will not only recognize this week of respect, but it will be a focus of our school throughout the entire year.

Renaissance Kickoff! On September 14, 2018, Kingsway Middle School hosted the Renaissance Kickoff, a whole-school event that highlighted the benefits of participating in the Renaissance program.

To generate excitement, each member of the faculty was announced NFL-style, with students cheering for their teachers!

During the kickoff, eighth-grade students shared their experiences of Renaissance and encouraged all students to participate.

Students were eager for these programs to begin and, now that they have, Dragon pride is skyrocketing!
