Message from the Principal Dear Parents, Friday 19 th June 2015 Thank you for reading this Newsletter Too much to do ……… The Tenby Adult Community Choir is due to perform a song as part of this Sunday’s Saujana Coffee Concert at 11:00hrs which is titled Too much to do...This could very easily be the theme song for the whole Tenby School community. It is impossible in the few words written each week in the Newsletter to capture all that is going on in this very busy School. Much of the successes of the School are achieved by many who quietly, and modestly, work away, often unseen and unsung. Thank you pupils, staff and parents for making this School so special. Year 11, 12, 13 Awards’ Evening, United Nations and Alumni Association The occasion was graced with the presence of the new British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell who gave out special awards, In her speech, the High Commissioner spoke graciously about the Tenby Schools Group, and her own childhood roots at Ipoh, but in particular addressed her comments to the pupils present, offering recognition of what they have achieved to date, and how they will have more important choices to make about their future lives. In his opening remarks, the Campus Principal spoke about the many achievements of senior pupils throughout the academic year, and in particular highlighted three occasions which typified the pupils’ ‘spirit and camaraderie’; the amazing Charity Carnival in March, last Friday’s Prom, and last weekend’s 2 day Model United Nations Conference. All 3 events were really organised entirely by the students in a most mature, and thoroughly professional way. Many countries have United Nations Youth Associations, but Malaysia does not have one …ye t. Perhaps another seed was sown last weekend, which will take root, and there will be a United Nations Youth Association of Malaysia, based here at Tenby in 2016. The British High Commissioner last night offered her support in this quest.

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Friday 19th June 2015 Thank you for reading this Newsletter Too much to do ……… The Tenby Adult Community Choir is due to perform a song as part of this Sunday’s Saujana Coffee Concert at 11:00hrs which is titled ‘Too much to do...’ This could very easily be the theme song for the whole Tenby School community. It is impossible in the few words written each week in the Newsletter to capture all that is going on in this very busy School. Much of the successes of the School are achieved by many who quietly, and modestly, work away, often unseen and unsung.

Thank you pupils, staff and parents for making this School so special. Year 11, 12, 13 Awards’ Evening, United Nations and Alumni Association

The occasion was graced with the presence of the new British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell who gave out special awards, In her speech, the High Commissioner spoke graciously about the Tenby Schools Group, and her own childhood roots at Ipoh, but in particular addressed her comments to the pupils present, offering recognition of what they have achieved to date, and how they will have more important choices to make about their future lives.

Many countries have United Nations Youth Associations, but Malaysia does not have one …yet. Perhaps another seed was sown last weekend, which will take root, and there will be a United Nations Youth Association of Malaysia, based here at Tenby in 2016. The British High Commissioner last night offered her support in this quest.

There is considerable excitement at Tenby about the Sixth Form for this September. The School is delighted that so many Year 11’s are staying on, and students from other international schools are joining Tenby. For those leaving the School this term, it is hoped that the students will look back with fond memories of this special place. An Alumni Association database (a former pupils’ Association) was started last year; the School will intend to keep in contact with those who have shared the Tenby vision. Special Olympics Malaysia

The School was lucky enough to host the official send-off for the Malaysian Special Olympics team that will be flying to Los Angeles to take part in the World Special Olympics. Over 30 of these great athletes were here to play two football matches against the staff of Uniqlo, who are the main sponsors of the Malaysian Special Olympics Team. The matches were ably refereed by Messrs. Robinson and Campus Principal who, it was rumoured, still looked remarkably fit ! The games were followed by some food and speeches. Tenby is proud to be involved with these great people and we look forward to increasing our partnership with the Special Olympics.

Sports’ Day at Panasonic Stadium: Congratulations to the winners Falcon House, and to ALL who participated There will be more details elsewhere in this Newsletter, but mention must be made here of a very happy day of competition amongst SST and TIS pupils. Students’ conduct and sportsmanship was exemplary, and determination and commitment were evident in every track and field event. The whole event was very well organised by the PE Staff who together with colleagues ensured an early prompt start… and early finish! Thank you to those parents who supported, and a special thank you to the PA and Tenby Korean parents who organised food and refreshment.

Primary Sports Days – Business As Usual! A few parents have asked if Primary children can go home after their Sports Day event. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, children are all expected to return to class after their Sports Day event and lessons will continue as usual. IPC Training

Last week our two Deputy Heads, Ms. Louise and Ms. Wee Sim, and our three IPC Coordinators, Ms. Malar, Ms. Jessita and Ms. Kael, attended a training course run by Fieldwork UK, the publishers of the IPC. During the course, they looked at the new ‘Bottom Line Nine’ standards for IPC which we are reflecting upon as part of the IPC Accreditation process. We have now updated our IPC Action Plan and will be continuing to work towards the objectives we have set over the coming year. One of our objectives is to continue to educate parents in the IPC and we will be shortly be re-running the IPC Parent Information Meeting which we held last year. Details will be sent shortly. In the meantime, here are some of the key words you may hear about IPC: • Entry Point The entry point is an activity for children that begins each unit of work and provides an exciting introduction to the work that is to follow. Entry points can last from one hour to a week, depending on the age of the children and the appropriateness of the activity. • Knowledge Harvest The knowledge harvest takes place in the early stages of each unit and provides an opportunity for children to reveal what they already know about the themes they are studying. This bank of knowledge can then be added to, developed and even challenged by the teacher, throughout the course of the unit. • Explaining The Theme This activity involves information for the teacher helping the children to see the ‘big idea’ of the unit of work before embarking on the subject learning. • Big Picture The big picture provides teachers with subject-based background information to the issues contained within the unit. • Exit Point The exit point has two main purposes. First, to help children pull together their learning from the unit and second, to celebrate the learning that has taken place. • Learning Goals Knowledge Facts that we think they need to know. This is information that we know is true and the way we answer a knowledge question will be either right or wrong. For example: Paris is the capital of France. That’s knowledge. Skills Finding out how to do things. Skills are practical and can be described as ‘being able’ to do something. For example: being able to tie shoe laces, being able to read a map, being able to perform an operation. There are skills within every subject that children study at school; from maths to art to history to science to music. Skills take time to develop and as we learn, we learn skills in small, progressive steps. Understanding

Page 10: Message from the Principal - Tenby Schools · PDF fileMessage from the Principal ... PT3 Oral English Test a) ... a)19th- 26th August b)Wednesday 12th August Auditorium PT3 Trial for

Developing a sense of the meaning behind why we know and do things. Understanding involves a combination of accumulated knowledge, practised skills and reflection over time. • Mileposts: - Early Years – 3 to 5 years - Milepost 1 – 5 to 7 years - Milepost 2 – 7 to 9 years - Milepost 3 – 9 to 12 years Busy Bees in Year 1 Year 1 had their Exit Point for Flowers and Insects recently. The children had an insect joke and quiz session, learned a song about bugs and watched a short video about a bug race. They then worked together as teams and came up with great answers. They also made headbands and hats that were either insect or flower related. All students had a great time ‘bugging’ around.

Year 7 trip to the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

10.06.2015: The entire cohort of Year 7s and a few accompanying teachers visited the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM). I was all abuzz about this field trip, as it was my first art trip in all the time I’ve been at Tenby. Situated in grandeur up the hill from the National Mosque, the Islamic Arts Museum is a beautiful place, with polished floors and a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for exploring the history of Islamic Art. The Islamic Arts Museum is reputed to be South East Asia's largest museum of its kind, and houses one of the best collections of Islamic decorative arts in the world. A definite must-visit for art buffs!

On arrival, we were split into two groups; one group was to go on a guided tour, the other would participate in a workshop. I started off with the house tour first. We headed upstairs to the gallery, where there was a plethora of artefacts and quality exhibits on display. The tour guides were knowledgeable and gave us a wealth of information starting with the first gallery - Architecture; including the famous Dome of the Rock (a mosque located in Jerusalem, which still stands today). As we were walking from room to room, there were huge domes above us. I discovered that domes are used to amplify and carry sound.

There are a total of twelve galleries at the Islamic Arts Museum. We ambled through the Manuscripts, Architecture, India, China, Malay World, Textiles, Jewellery, Arms & Armour, Coins & Seals, Metalwork, Ceramic & Glass and Living with Wood Galleries. My favourite gallery is the tile and porcelain gallery because I saw how porcelain was used and how it has advanced through the years.

In the workshop, we learned how to design and paint our own tiles. The first step was to draw a pattern on a piece of paper. Next, we traced the pattern onto the tile which had been laid over with carbon paper, so the drawing gets transferred. We then outlined our drawings on the tile with special outline paints. The fourth step was to let it dry then paint in the colours. Finally, we were done! Some of us fooled around with non-theme related designs, while others just used the templates provided… Me? I used circles to draw my design, based on what we had learnt in school. I made a mistake, but manage d to alter it a little here and there! I was quite pleased with my *cough* ahem, artisanship for the day!

An intricately designed dome Model of the Dome of the Rock

Page 13: Message from the Principal - Tenby Schools · PDF fileMessage from the Principal ... PT3 Oral English Test a) ... a)19th- 26th August b)Wednesday 12th August Auditorium PT3 Trial for

Time just seemed to whizz by! We ate our packed lunch on site, collected our tiles, and then headed back to school. Overall, I enjoyed the whole trip. I must admit I did not expect much from an Islamic Arts Museum initially, but I was pleasantly surprised. The stunningly decorated domes and glazed tilework were magnificent. They left a lasting impression on me. I hope more field trips to cultural institutions including art, natural history, and science museums, as well as theatres, zoos, and historical sites will be organised; to help us better appreciate the arts and culture, and to access our cultural heritage. Am I in favour of learning beyond the classroom? You bet!

A huge thank you to the Art Department who put in lots of effort to organise this fantastic trip, and another equally huge thank you to Ms Hassan, Ms Ong, Ms Lisa, Ms Pearce, Ms Hall, Ms McCue, Mr Kenny, Mr Shen and Ms Sylvia for tagging along!

Secondary Sports Day: A huge success at the Panasonic Stadium for Secondary Sports Day on Tuesday. Some fantastic achievements and results over the day from our students. It was an electric atmosphere with some very close races on the track and records being broken on the field. Falcons led the House competition from the start of the day. It was the Tigers that gave the closest chase and worried the Falcons right up until the team relays when the double points could have changed the course of the day. There were a few slick changeovers amongst the teams but not enough was done to change the leader board. The Falcon House were crowned the Tenby Secondary Sports Day 2015 champions! Results: 1st Falcons 3265 points 2nd Tigers 3153 points 3rd Phoenix 3018 points 4th Dragons 2945 points Check out the Tenby Facebook page for photos. Records and results to follow. http://On.fb.me/1FmguDz
