One issue which is of great importance is the incrca e in licen e fee renewals The Slale bonrd has seen a decrease of approximately 10 of the dental population causing a decrea e in renewal revenue but we have experienced an increase in inve tigative and legal co ts in the past everal yeru We feel an in rease of futy dollars per year for dentists and twenty-five dollars a year for hygienists will help to re olve this issue

The Louisiana Stale Board of Dentistry no longer conducts clinical licensing examinations Who would have thought this day would ever come Louisiana ba always been an independent testing agency and always put agreal deal of effort time and money into administering a valid and reliable clinical licensing examination However the national changes have convinced us that it was time to join with a regional testing agency The Council of Interstate Testing Agencies (CITA) convinced us 10 COntract with them to administer our clinical licensing examinations in the future By laking this examination our young dentists and dental hygienists will have more mobiHty than ever before The CITA examination i administered in the states of North Carolina Mississippi Alabama Louisiana and Puerto Rico Further sixteen states now recognize the CITA examination and more are coming on board all the time This has been a long time coming and the board decided to go with CITA after reviewing all other cHnical examinations a presented at the meetings of the American Association of Dental Examiners Furthermore the Louisiana Stale Board of Dentistry has been involved with CITA since its inception which facilitates our transition

Please remember that now all licensees must obtain the fujI requirements of continuing education in order to renew their licenses We had previously decreased the number of hours due to the cliffjculties of dentists and dental hygienist being able to obtain continuing education after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

In the future dentists providing sedation to pediatric patients (under age 13) must be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Dentists administering deep sedation to adults will be required to be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Since the huoicane~Louisiana has lost approximately 200 dentists which equates

to approximately 10 of the dentist population in the state This number is significantly higher than tbe population loss but is in line with other medical professionals who have left the state for greener pastures Kudos to everyone who is sticking it out and fighting this fight Unfortunately this also creates a tiscal problem for the board because we must continue our operations with less revenue We will strive to continue to provide the best service possibJe to the public and the dental populations

As you can see we no longer publish a Dental Practice Act booklet The cost of printing the booklets each year has become prohibitive You can review the Dental Practice Act at our website www 1sbd org You may also download all forms and applications as well such as the licensure by credentials application license by outside examination application restricted license application all anesthesia applications (both dental and dental hygiene) and the expanded duty dental assistant application

Of particular concern is the rise in substance abuse problems as weIJ as fraud The board is receiving more complaints in these two areas than ever before and wilJ vigorously prosecute tllOse practitioners who take advantage of their patients by overdiagnosing or cheating on claims Practitioners who commit fraud may be lining their own pockets but they are a terrible disgrace to the dental profession We ask any dentist who sees fraud committed by another dentist to please report it to us as soon as possible

The board and New Orleans are extremely grateful to have LSU dental school back Ln New Orleans There is a strong need for LSU within the population of New Orleans especially during these tumultuous times of rebuilding our conmlUnilY

The board would like to thank Dr Eric Hovland for his commaodiJlg the LSU dental school through the tenible crisis caused by tbe hurricanes and his unwavering strength and ability to get the school back to New Orleans We understand that Dean Hovland hru submitted his resignation and we wish him weU in al1 of his future endeavors We also look forward to working with his Sllccessor whomever that may be

Unfortunately the board is losing almost thirty-five years of experience on the board with the retirement of Drs Dennis Donald Conrad P McVea and Vance Wascom due to term limits Their experience dedication and knowledge wiIJ never be replaced Dr Donald served for 15 years and as president three times Drs McVea and Wascom both served ten years and as president as well We express our sinceresl gratitude to these fine gentlemen for the many many hours they took from their practices and familJes to serve the board and the public We only hope that their successors come with the same dedication

The board conducted four nominating meetings for new appointments to the board Meetings were held in Lake Charles Lafayette Northlake and NODA

The nominees have been presented to the governor for appointment However as this is a gubernatorial change it is not known if Governor Blanco will make these appointmentgt or if she will allow the Governor Eject Bobby Jindal to make these appointments We eagerly wait with anticipation
