Christmas Tree, Foundation Nativity, Pavilion, Excellence Visit, Business Links, Hobson and Porter, Year 3, Headteacher’s Challenge, KS1 Corridor and Music Exams.

Christmas is coming! This week the children were very excited with the arrival of the main school Christmas tree. The tree measures a huge 20 ft. Foundation Nativity I was blown away by the confidence of the Nursery and Reception children this week. It was lovely to share those precious memories with other parents and hearing Mrs Maltby explain to the children about adults’ happy tears afterwards.

Pavilion We now have a roof on the pavilion and we hope to open it in mid-January. More details to follow regarding an opening event in the New Year. Thank you to all those parents who have donated towards the building and we are in the process of establishing an Honours Board for the foyer which will have the names of all those families who have donated.

Excellence Visit In the New Year we are excited to be hosting an excellence visit for United Learning, focusing on the excellent practice in maths across Prep. We will be showing our Singapore-style mastery approach to teaching to support school improvement across the group. Business Links

We are hoping to establish a list of Businesses / Companies who will become Associate Partners of the school and appear on our website; as such If you run a business or would like your company to become an Associate of the school please could you con-tact the marketing team [email protected] in the first instance. Hobson and Porter This week, year 5 and 6 pupils learnt through a maths in construction workshop. Mark Young, a site engineer for Hobson & Porter explained his role and why maths is so important within engineering. The pupils then had hands-on experience of coordinates and measuring using various instruments including a theodolite. In the summer, pupils will have the opportunity to develop this further by measuring on the field. A really interactive workshop which was enjoyed by all! Thank you to Mrs Stokes for organising the visit.

Year 3 This week I spent lunch on Tuesday sitting with children from Year 3. I had a very deep discussion with Jack, Arthur and Harry Earl. Their enthusiasm for our curriculum and challenge and for their daily school life was a privilege to share. What shining examples of our school. Headteacher's Challenge Last week's challenge was won by Thomas Hamilton in Year 3. Excellent effort Thomas. KS1 Corridor Wednesday night saw the transformation of KS1 and all of Prep's Christmas elves hard at work and it was certainly worth it as the children entered on Thursday in perfect awe and wonder.

Headteacher’s Challenge

Back by popular demand, this week’s challenge has a literacy focus. All entries must be received by Friday 9th at 9.00am.

We had a super response to last week’s challenge from Years 4, 3 and notably, Year 1.

We hope to welcome all of you to our Christmas Fair tomorrow. It promises to be a fun and festive event and this year, has built on previous strengths to create a fair that all of the family will enjoy. Funds from this year's Christmas Fair will go to supporting numerous projects, including a whole-school tree house. Thank you for your continued support. Mrs Kell

Headteacher’s Commendations

Eddie Bell

Eddie has incredible ‘stick-ability’ and has worked continuously since September to develop in all aspects of his learning in school. In particu-lar, he has made excellent progress in his handwriting and now writes with more care and precision, tak-ing a pride in his work. He is loving the mastery maths and is eating his way through the daily challenges. He has such a positive attitude and is rarely seen without a smile on his face. Keep it up Eddie. You’re mak-ing excellent progress!

collection of your Christmas cards. Please write your friends full name

and class on the envelope to help our elves deliver them.

Please don’t forget any outstanding costumes - we have our dress

rehearsal on Monday morning!

Foundation Stage News

As I write this the costumes are being set out and the children sent home for a good night’s sleep before our Nativity performance of “Christmas Counts” tomorrow. If it is as successful as the dress rehearsal, which we performed to the Prep School on Wednesday, it will be a wonderful start to the Christmas festivities, with sensational singing and dancing, clear speaking and great acting from our enthusiastic cast of angels, census takers, innkeepers, villagers, shepherds and sheep, wise men, pages and camels, not forgetting Mary, Joseph, the donkey and the star! Please don’t forget:

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the school’s Christmas Fair. This is a great event incorporating a wealth of sea-sonal cheer, and it would be lovely to see you there. Tuesday 6th December promises to be a fun-filled morning as our Reception children take part in a Christmas craft morning. Continuing through the week, the Foundation Stage Christmas Dinner and Party, take place on the afternoon of Thursday 8th December. Please make sure that you have returned your child’s completed booking form to their class teacher if you would like them to take part. Friday 9th December will be our last Foundation Stage Cele-bration Assembly for 2016, and our final special event of the term will be our visit to the Grand Opera House York to see Aladdin on Wednesday 14th December. All pupils attending must be at school by 8.15am, as the bus will be leaving shortly after this time. Reception and Nursery classes will be closed on that day. School and Nursery close for Term Time pupils on Thursday 15th December at 12.00 noon, following the morning session, and Friday 23rd December is the last day before Christmas break for our All Year Round Nursery pupils. The Nursery reopens for All Year Round pupils on Tuesday 3rd January 2017, and for Term Time pupils on Wednesday 4th January 2017. Any Nursery parents who wish to alter their child’s sessions for the term beginning January 2017 should have returned their completed session forms by this afternoon at the latest. Please call Mrs Fawcett-Ward in the Prep Office by return if you still need to do this. Thank you.

School Council Letter - Somebody, Somewhere Cares

Dear Parents

Prep School Council are involved in a social action project initiated by United Learning to develop our leadership skills.

Our project is to raise awareness of the difficulties affecting the homeless people of Hull.

As this is the season of goodwill, we would like you to fill a shoe box with toiletries to include items for personal hygiene,

as well as comfort items like socks, gloves, hats and scarves (see photo).

Please include a Christmas card with a supportive message to show that Somebody, Somewhere Cares. An optional £1

donation stuck to the inside of the box lid will be donated to the homeless charities Hull HARP (Hull Homeless and Root-

less Project) and the HHCP (Hull Homeless Community Project).

The Toiletries Shoe Boxes will be collected and given out to the homeless on Christmas day to show that Somebody,

Somewhere Cares.

Please leave your Toiletries Shoe Box at Prep reception before the

Monday 12 December.

Thank you.

Foundation Stage

Foundation have had an exceptionally busy week. It all began last Friday as we ventured out onto the lawn in front of the school to position the order of our planets in the solar system. The children held onto scaled inflatable versions of our plan-ets and stood in relative distance from the sun. Unfortunately we ran out of ‘space’ quite literally as we required another 190 feet of lawn to fit Neptune and Pluto on.

No doubt you’ll remember the day, well possibly several days that your child came home covered in chalk dust. Of course you will by now have realised that we really do like to immerse ourselves in our learning! The children enjoyed learning about Rangoli patterns associated with the festival of Diwali. Here children can be seen creating patterns in chalk outside the classroom and colouring in symmetrical patterns as well as collaging their own design with tissue paper and sand. We have read and sequenced the story of Rama and Sita and made diva lamps. We spent time investigating shadows and designing our own Mendi patterns on our hands.

Diwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Page 11: Message from the Headteacher - Hull Collegiate School · Eleanor Fryer, Ibraheem Ghori, Elijah Dsenis-Contantine, Eva Sourbron, Eliza Kings Greenies = Sebastian Lopez, Lily Taylor,

As has become tradition, Prep Reception and Key Stage One Practitioners stayed late on Wednesday night till late evening creating a Christmas wonderland for the chil-dren, ready to begin Advent on the Thursday 1st December. The ceiling was strung with an oversized garland of baubles and the corridor celebrated the children’s crea-tive work with Receptions ‘Little Robin Red Vest’ frieze, and Key Stage 1 Nativity sce-ne, snow globes and a frieze depicting the children’s performance of ‘Children of the World’. Our youngest pupil in Reception, Harry Danby had the honour of turning on the Christmas tree lights as we all sang a variety of Christmas songs.

Reception spent the afternoon decorating our classroom Christmas tree, making paper chain garlands and miniature 3D Christmas tree cards.

The children at lunchtime were engaged in their outdoor play with found items from around the garden. They began with building a structure from sticks and leaves which then became a shelter and finally with the addition of the nativity scene ornaments from the classroom, became the Nativity stable.

Page 12: Message from the Headteacher - Hull Collegiate School · Eleanor Fryer, Ibraheem Ghori, Elijah Dsenis-Contantine, Eva Sourbron, Eliza Kings Greenies = Sebastian Lopez, Lily Taylor,

But the climax of the week has to be our superb Nativity performance of ‘Christmas Counts’. What an extravaganza of festive cheer with all of Foundation in costume singing and performing to the whole of Prep on the Wednesday and to their parents on the Friday.

Rex’s Blog

Ali’s week with Rex

Saturday

This is one of the worst things I have to do in my life ‘Arabic school’. In the car, I got to play my favourite game ‘Crossy

Road’ (high score 102). When me and my brother Ahmad got there, I went into class and these are my top 3 friends in

Arabic School: Saif, Khalid and Sanad. In the Arabic School, we pray every week before break time as part of learning Islam.

Sunday

On Sunday it was the best day ever! I saw Liverpool FC vs Leeds FC where Liverpool won 2-0 and Ahmad is a Liverpool

fan. The in the evening, we went to ‘Lazaat’ the restaurant in Beverley. I had margarita pizza with chips but my Daddy and

Mummy had fish. I took some photos right next to the Christmas Tree.

Don't miss out on this fabulous Christmas show at East Riding Theatre,

Beverley

Sponsor a specimen tree at the school

We have had to remove a number of trees from the school grounds and have 18 new trees to

plant in replacement. There are a variety of trees such as Cedar, Oak and Beech and they will be

approximately 8ft tall at the time of planting. These beautiful trees will become part of the

school for years to come and we are delighted to offer you the opportunity to sponsor one of the

trees.

Sponsorship will cost £65.00 and this covers the cost of the tree, fittings, a donation to the Trust and a personalised brass

plaque bearing your chosen name; this plaque will be with your tree forever. You are welcome to come and plant your tree

yourself and choose the location.

We only have 18 trees so if you would like to sponsor one

please email [email protected]

Please note that this is separate to the 420 Woodland Trees

being planted – it’s planting season!

Thank you

November 2016

Dear Parents,

School Assembly

We had the privilege of speaking in assembly to all the children and parents in Foundation Prep and Senior School this week. It was lovely to see the enthusiasm and excitement from the children as we spoke about the Christmas Fair.

The Friends of Hull Collegiate work incredibly hard all year to ensure that all events are a success. Our commitment enables school pupils to be provided with a range of opportunities and resources funded through the money raised. In the last financial year we purchased-

African drums - £510 Cricket Nets - £3500 Wardrobes in drama room for costume storage - £1062 SEN pen reader - £199 Telescopes for Astronomy Club - £510 Event shelters for sports days and outdoor events - £545 Pavilion (£10k, total donation is £14k over three years) 2 x Outdoor table tennis - £1280 Sewing machines and ovens for Prep Clubs and Activities plus a host of items including books for nursery - £2658

We also sponsor prizes for Prize Giving Day. We have paid for author visits to come into school and speak with the children about their book. In the last year we funded a visit from the famous “Enigma Machine” which was brought from Bletchley. This was the actual machine used in the war to decode.

We are so working hard to generate more fundraising ideas as we are helping to fund a tree house, which will be used as an outdoor learning classroom working alongside the Forest School. This will be used for the whole school and indoor gym equipment will also be purchased in the near future for the Senior School

We could not do this without your valued support and we will look forward to welcoming you all to The Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December 11am-3pm

Kind Regards

FoHCS
