Message from the Chair Craig L. Washington,
District 3
Septiembre 2015 Vol. 2, No. 9 Sheryl Turner, NW Commissioner, District 2, Newsletter Editor
We’ve had a great summer
season with lots of activities
in the NW and your NW Com-
missioners have been repre-
senting the residents at com-
munity events and meetings.
Now all the students have re-
turned to school and we can
get ready for the festive activ-
ities of the fall season.
This year residents elected
three new members and ap-
pointed one interim member
to the PUSD School Board. No
matter whether you have chil-
dren in the district schools,
the PUSD Board needs your
support and input. They have
worked hard to implement in-
novative programs with com-
munity partners and we are
especially proud of their part-
nership with Pasadena City
College whereby PUSD stu-
dents can be concurrently en-
rolled in high school and earn
college credits, creating path-
ways to secondary education
and careers for all our high
school students. This partner-
ship will help students with
the academic, critical think-
ing and communication skills
they need to compete in a rap-
idly globalizing economy.
Another integral part of the
PUSD learning experience is
the program for alternative
education at Rose City and at
Continuing Independent
Studies programs. These pro-
grams provide students with
credit recovery, diplomas and
career explorations.
Additionally, the school board
is overseeing all the construc-
tion projects at our various
school sites funded by Meas-
ure TT monies, making our
school facilities among the
finest in the Greater Los
Angeles area.
Please continue to support
our PUSD School district. For

Hemos tenido una gran

Este año los residentes ele-
gidos a tres nuevos miem-
bros y había designado a
un miembro provisional de
la Junta Escolar de PUSD.
No importa si tiene hijos en
las escuelas del distrito, la
Junta de PUSD necesita su
apoyo y entrada. Ellos han
trabajado duro para imple-
mentar programas innova-
dores con socios de la co-
munidad y nos sentimos es-
pecialmente orgullosos de
su asociación con Pasadena
City College mediante el
cual los estudiantes PUSD
pueden estar matriculados
simultáneamente en la es-
cuela secundaria y ganan
créditos universitarios,
creando caminos hacia la
educación secundaria y de
carreras para todos nues-

secundaria.
Esta alianza ayudará a los
estudiantes con el académi-

habilidades de comuni-

los proyectos de construc-

9,000 MEALS SERVED DURING SUMMER FOOD
PROGRAM AT JACKIE ROBINSON CENTER
A grant awarded by the James E. Aldredge Foun-
dation of Fresno to Pasadena YouthBuild provided
funding for 9,000 meals this summer to feed
breakfast and supper to youths in NW Pasadena.
The program also allowed five students to have
jobs in a summer work experience program and
additionally funded two part-time workers as su-
pervisors to oversee the food program.
“We were glad to provide this funding again this
summer to NW Pasadena,” said President and
CEO Marco Brewer. “There is a clear and identifi-
able need in the area, especially with almost 200
children a day participating in the Robinson Park
Summer Camp program. They work up quite an
appetite!” Further information is available at
Pasadena YouthBuild, 626.437.3509.

27th ANNUAL MICHAEL BRYANT
BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT AT ROBINSON PARK
More than 300 children gathered at Robinson Park to get
ready to go back to school and to receive a free haircut, a
high quality, brightly colored backpack filled with quali-
ty school supplies, donated by Sydney Paige® Inc.
“We are so excited to partner with the City of Pasadena,”
said Courtney Brockmeyer, Founder & CEO of the Buy One
| Give One backpack company, “and to give back to this
wonderful community. It’s just not right that some kids re-
turn to school without a backpack and the basics, like pen-
cils, crayons and paper.”
Sydney Paige® Inc. has also brought on board
the Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse to support this
event. During the month of August, all Sydney Paige® pur-
chases made at the La Cañada bookstore will lead to a
matching backpack donation for kids in need in Pasadena.
Pasadena community members all joined the Sydney
Paige® GIVING BACK TOGETHER Movement by pur-
chasing backpacks to give these school-age children much
needed items for school. “The top reasons for kids dropping
out of school are simply lack of confidence and the lack of
tools to do their work. By providing underserved children
with new, high quality backpacks and the supplies they
need, we are providing them with a foundation to learn and
thrive in school.”

CNAP RE-CAP In September we complete one
year as the Pasadena City Nu-
trition Action Plan (CNAP)
network. The CNAP network’s
collaborative approach is built
on collective impact. We
recognize that no single or-
ganization is responsible for
any major social problem, nor
can any single organization
cure it, but together we can
make significant and lasting
change. Thank you to all who
have taken time to participate
in this journey of working to-
gether towards making
healthier changes in Pasade-
na.
It is worth noting that within
this year as a network we
have reached two significant
benchmarks. First we identi-
fied priorities that resonated
with importance amongst the
group. Those priorities are: 1)
Consistent nutrition messag-
ing throughout all programs,
2) Preventative Education,
and 3) Land use for gardening.
From these priorities,
stemmed the development of
our four working groups. The
working groups provide an ex-
tended platform for individu-
als/organizations who have a
vested interest in a particular
priority to express/share their
knowledge and resources.
Most groups have drafted a
mission statement that contin-
ues to evolve and most im-
portantly working group mem-
bers have been able to lever-
age their services/resources by partnering with other indi-
viduals/organizations that share and support a common
goal. At our next CNAP meeting we will further discuss our
goal of developing an “nutrition action plan” for the City. We
will also share information on the upcoming update of the
City’s Quality of Life (QOL) Index. This update is an oppor-
tunity for CNAP to review this document and to provide
feedback where deemed necessary. For more information
contact Esmeralda Garcia, (626) 744-6134.
