Hello Lions, Lioness, Leos of 22 D - and any guest reading this missive!!
My FINAL newsletter as District Governor! Where has this year gone? We have had a good run -
a successful year in many areas:
Increase in Women Members - we went from 27% a year ago to 31% current. At least our
district met IP Palmer's dream! Good Work!
New Club - with the charter (April 25) of DSU Campus Club - we are now BACK to 35. We
need to continue to find areas to 'plant' new clubs. Let me know if you have any ideas - since
this will be my job for the next 3 years!
Food collection - We collectively have donated to the Food Bank and to our local food closets,
PLUS who knows how many pounds of food clubs gave at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and on as
needed basis in their own communities.
Youth - as I read your reports - it continues to amaze me the number of scout troops, and little
leagues we serve. And what is truly phenomenal is the dollars given in scholarships. I have
quit adding - $50,000 statewide - and know it surpasses that!!
Veterans, several clubs have recruited veterans as new members - and all clubs recognize our
Vets on a regular basis. A shout out to Lion Stanley Lawruk of Wilmington Manor who was
given positive press in the News Journal on June 6. Lion Stan was a top turret gunner on a
Flying Fortress during World War II and had a bird's eye view of the D-Day invasion. He said
in the article "I saw all the ships go across the channel. " To all our Veterans - especially those
from World War II - I say a heartfelt THANK YOU!
Mark your calendar for September 13,2014 for a WALK FOR A
HEALTHY COMMUNITY. If you are able to walk this event
(some will be at USA/Canada Forum), please contact Lion Janet
Berry at the Delaware Association for the Blind (DAB). DAB will
benefit from this event. It will be held in Bellevue State Park,
Wilmington beginning at 7:45 A.M. Janet will be happy to send you
information: [email protected],
My final comment on millponds is this - without them we would not
be the great state we are today. Water power ground corn or wheat
for meals, was used to produce gun powder, make paper, and saw
lumber to make homes and businesses. When I think about it - our
ancestors had a 'GREEN, CLEAN’ way to run their businesses!
Ecologically they were ahead of us - using resources like wind and
water! If you need someplace to take the family this summer -
check the schedules of Abbotts Mill in Milford or Greenbanks Mill
in Wilmington - and see mills as they were! Off my soap box!
Looking to the future - we need to continue to 'involve a friend'
when doing our service projects - then inviting that friend to be a
Lion - rather than the other way around. We need to be more
visible in our community by wearing our club vests or shirts, when
doing white cane or vision days. And we need to continue to
SERVE where ever and when ever we can!

Lion of the Month
District Bulletin Editor Lynn
Kroesen. Lion Lynn has been
a god-send to me with her
publishing skills - making sure
this missive is out timely
each month, gathering data
from the clubs - and making it
fit. In addition she has helped Lion Jay with his du-
ties as Cabinet Secretary. As a special thank you,
Lion Lynn will be receiving a Life Membership in the
LEBDV from me. THANK YOU LYNN!!
From the Desk of the Editor/Publisher
Lion Lynn Kroesen
My year as your newsletter editor has come to an end. It has been a pleasure serving the Lions of this district
in this way. I want to Thank the all the Lions who so faithfully sent me their club newsletters, ads and articles
about what their clubs were doing. I want to especially thank those who sent me pictures from the many
special events happening around the district: Lion Bob Pierson, PDG Bob Daniels, PDG Bob Jones and Lion
Marie Chew. I really appreciated all those who sent e-mails of praise and thanks after each issue or stopped
and told me how much they enjoyed the newsletter. For me that was the best kind of appreciation and
recognition.
Lion Sheila Schieferstein will be taking over as editor with the July issue. Please send your newsletters, arti-
cles, ads and pictures to her at [email protected].
From Lions Website - because sometime we forget where we came from - and what our Mission/Vision has always been
- Sight, Hearing and Youth! DG MLP
In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. Jones' group, the Business Circle of
Chicago, agreed.
After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the "Association of Lions Clubs," and a national
convention was held in Dallas, Texas, USA in October of that year. A constitution, by-laws, objects and a code of ethics were
approved.
Within three years, Lions became an international organization. Since then, we've earned high marks for both integrity and
transparency. We're a well-run organization with a steady vision, a clear mission, and a long – and proud – history.
To all of you - many more than I could ever mention - all
are Lions of the month and unsung heroes in my book. Just
to mention a few without names - I have heard of Lions
who delivered food and supplies to recent victims of the
tornado in Kent County, of others who drive blind people to
meetings and appointments - throughout the state, and of
others who take money out of their own pocket to help
those in need when their club can't! You are all heroes -
everyday in every way.

DG To Host Tail Gate Party
The Blue Gold Game will be on June 21 at the U of D stadi-
um. Tradition has the 'departing' District Governor as the host for the tail gate.
Millsboro Lions will provide Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, (Rolls,
condiments), Chips, Sodas for all who visit our area.
Lions who attend are encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs, and any other snacks you may want to share during the hours
preceding the game. The game begins at 7 pm with festivities start-
ing around 6 pm in the stadium. Set up by NCH Lions of the tent will be noonish. Brookside LC will once again provide their trailer
for the cooking of the food. They too will arrive around
noon. Most 'tailgaters' arrived last year around 1:30 - that sounds
reasonable to me! Come enjoy the fellowship of Lions, meet some of the others who attend, and visit the other tents in the area. If your
club has a brochure - please bring some. I am taking a small table
and a basket to put these brochures and membership applications in - for any 'visitors' to the tent. I also will have my clubs 'welcome'
banner to tie to tent. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

From Our Vice District Governors
Cruise To Service
Hello Fellow Lions,
This year’s cruise is just about over. I would like to thank DG Mary Lee for involving me in her travels this year. We had so
much fun when we all rode together. Again how can you not have fun when you have CT Randy and me in the same car?
Through all the fun I did learn so much about our district and the multiple.
Now it is time to gear up and get ready for a new ride blowing that whistle. I will be ready to help and support your new
District Governor Cheryl Jones. With new ideas and programs to move our district forwarded.
Saturday June 7th PCC Keith Hinkle and I were the presenters for membership and retention at our leadership training.
Delaware State University was a great place to have this training. I was pleased to see the training well represented by the
clubs. PCC Ralph Schieferstein and committee did a great job this year.
Don’t forget the Blue Gold game is coming up and International Convention in Toronto, Canada. Try to put on your
calendar the USA/Canada Forum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A place to learn and have fun at the same time.
As always we need to address the issue of membership. In order to keep our District
in good standing we need to keep asking that important question, would you like to
be a Lion?
Thanks for letting me serve this great organization.
Yours in Lionism, James R. Coverdale
2nd Vice District Governor
"TH-TH-TH-THAT'S ALL FOLKS!"
This phrase was first used at the end of a 1930 Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoon. Many other characters have uttered the line since, in both the LooneyTunes and Merrie Melodies
series. Notable amongst these was Porky Pig. His stuttered 'Th-th-th-that's all folks!' is
probably one of the best remembered lines of all times. In a nutshell, this is telling the
audience the show is over. They can either wait for the next attraction or go home if that was the final one. Well, the show isn’t over and the next attraction will be - serving as your District Governor during the next
year. As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I look forward to working together with all of you and watching all the
great things that will be accomplished in the name of Lionism. My articles will certainly take on a different turn as I abandon my catchphrases and tell my stories in another way – keeping you all informed of things that have happened and
things to come. And so as I close out this year blowing my whistle and saying, 'Th-th-th-that's all folks!'- I would like to also add,
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your next District Governor. I look forward to it and know that great
things will be accomplished when we all work together as a team.”
"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much"

2015 officers as well as the Induction of New Members, Glenn & Carole

good time and a success. The crew in the Funnel Cake Trailer
worked hard all day long. The Milton Clipper Express ran all day. The estimated riders exceed 600. Lion John Collier was at
the engine as usual and was assisted by two Leos from Cape
Henlopen High School. Our Pancake Breakfast is June 21. See ad on page 14.

every Wednesday – ride the Clipper Express and enjoy the
music.
Rehoboth Beach Lions Club The club has voted to return to night meetings on the second
Wednesday of the month. The place has yet to be determined.
Lord Baltimore Lions Club
What a pleasure it was to have our
three Indian River High School graduate scholarship winners join us
at our June 4th meeting. Individual-
ly they spoke briefly to our group,
each expressing what the scholarship meant to them and letting us know
about their educational and future
professional goals. These winning students (and we mean that literally)
were selected based on a review of
their academic success, financial need, extracurricular and community
service activities. Each student was awarded a $1,500 Scholar-
ship.
The scholarships are in memory of Lion Ralph Helm. Lion Ralph was a member of the Lord Baltimore Club who served
as Club President, our District Governor and an International
Director of Lions International. His accomplishments were outstanding in both the local and international environments.
The Lord Baltimore Lions Club is honored to award these
scholarships in his name.
Our club has been participating in the LCI Club Excellence Process project. The first step of the process was to personally
interview key community leaders to determine opportunities
for the Club to better meet the needs of those in our service
area and increase awareness of the Club and the Club’s activi-ties. This process is known as a Community Needs Assessment
(CNA). The second part of the process was to survey our cur-
rent members to determine how we could strengthen our mem-bership and improve Club Satisfaction. This process was done
through providing written surveys which were submitted anon-
ymously to our unbiased CEP consultant, Lion Ralph Schief-erstein of Dover, who is certified through LCI as a CEP facili-
tator. The results were submitted to Lions Club International
and we were recently awarded a letter of recognition and ban-
ner patch noting our achievement in completing the Club Ex-cellence Process.
On June 10th, three Lord Baltimore Lions; Mary Richer, Janet
Bauer and Jack Bauer went to John M. Clayton School.
They provided pizza and
punch as a small reward for these students who had
earned straight “A’s” for the
fourth marking period. This
project was started through the dedicated efforts of
Guidance Counselor Jan
Bomhardt and Lion Janet Parham’s community as-
sessments done during
our CEP project. Thirty six, mostly first graders, achieved this
honor for the last marking period. The club is looking forward to continuing this project next year.
CORY WALSH GOES ‘OVER THE EDGE’
FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS
As proud as our members are of Cory Walsh’s feat of rappel-
ling down a 33 story building in Wil-mington to raise money for Special
Olympics Delaware, our pride can’t
be matched by that of his three chil-
dren. What a great example Cory showed all of us in taking on his fear
of heights to make a difference in the
lives of our Special Olympians, rais-ing over $1400 for the cause. While
his children were present, many of
our LBLC members got a thrill watching him coming down in real-time over the internet.
Way to go Cory!

John Shwed inducted Lion Bruce
Barrall into the Laurel Lions Club. June 19 is our Charter Night. We
will honor our Charter Members --

our outstanding current Lion

Midway Lions Club
On Memorial Day—three of our Lions---RC Harry and
Carolyn White and Delores Springer were in Washington D.C.

alongside. At our June 2th meeting, our guest speaker was April
Willey Volunteer Coordinator for the Retired Senior Volun-
teer program (RSVP) under the Delaware State Office of Volunteerism. She talked about “A Matter of Balance” a
Delaware sponsored program designed to reduce such fears
and build physical strength and balance. April informed us
how we can participate and showed us a few valuable exercises to begin working toward stronger, more flexible
bodies.
June 16, our last meeting of the year, will be the induction of officers for 2014-2015 by PDG Karl Gude. Also during the
meeting Lion Fran Daly will be conducting a survey with

of the Lions year on June 17th. PDG Jim Minnich will
perform the installation of officers for the Club. He and his wife Lorraine will be our guests at the meeting. While our

those in need through eye exams and glasses and volunteering at Newark community events. Keep up the good work and
continue to show your Lions spirit.

Glasgow Lions Club
During our first meeting in May we honored our 2014
scholarship recipients from Glasgow High School and Hodgson Vo-Tech. Both young ladies have aspirations of
pursuing careers in the
medical field.
Finally had some
decent weather for our Adopt a Highway clean
-up, although parts of
the route were still a
little wet from previous rains. We had a total
of 15 people help. The
highway was very dirty but really looks good now. We collected 24 bags of trash and
other assorted items.
Another 134 eye glasses have been turned over to Lion Al.
This brings our grand totals this
Lions year to 1107 pairs of glasses,
11 hearing aids and three phones.
On June 3 we held our annual excur-
sion to the Blue Rocks game. It also doubled as a Zone social with sever-
al members from the Newark Lions
joining us. We had a group of 28 Lions and guests celebrate at the first base picnic area. Lion Roy threw out the first pitch
(and was given the ball as a souvenir). An unnamed Glasgow
Lion was stuffed into our Lion suit to become Leo the Lion
who hobnobbed with Rocky Bluewinkle and coached Lion Roy to get the ball over the plate for a strike. A good time
was had by all and the Blue Rocks even won the game.
Harrington Lions Club
Thanks to all who helped with the Quarter Auction on Satur-
day, May 10. We were able to raise $596. We will have a Chinese Auction on June 29,5 PM at Gabriella's Pizza &

We will once again be very busy driving the Fair Shuttles and also the Golf Carts for the Casino July 17 to 26.
Capitol City Lions Club We had a White Cane fundraiser over the Memorial Day
weekend and collected over $700 to help the community. Also
collected eyeglasses and sold car tickets. We will not have a regular meeting in June but will substitute it with the Joint
Meeting on that Monday, June 16 where the new DGE Cheryl
Jones will install the new members for the Dover Lions, Dover
Lioness, Capitol City Lions and possibly the Smyrna Lions, and Camden-Wyoming Lions. Dinner will be $16.00.

On Sunday June 1, we hosted an end of the year picnic at Camp Barnes for the Indian River High School LEO Club, as a
way of saying ‘Thank You’ to its members for the service
work they do in the community and for helping us with our fundraisers. We also welcomed a group of students who attend
Sussex Tech and are interested in starting a LEO Club at that
school. We were also delighted to welcome DG Mary Lee, DGE Cheryl Jones, and several Lord Baltimore Lions includ-
ing ZC Jack Bauer and his wife Lion Janet.

Middletown Lions Club On Tuesday, June 3rd, our KL Jack while dressed in our
Lion costume for first graders of the MOT Charter School,
participated in our third annual Flag Presentation to 75 six year olds. Lions Sabby, Ginny and Dennis took turns quizzing the
children on flag trivia. The children barely missed answering a
question. Each child received a 4x6" flag and several word puzzles and flag trivia handouts. The children couldn't get
enough of the Lion. This is one of our "best" community
service projects.
Frederica Spring Creek Lions Club On June 7th, Lions BJ, Cathy, Janet, Sue Shore and Sheila attended classes for Leadership Training at DSU. The classes
were informative and the facility was great!
June 27th is set as our
WHITE CANE DAY to be
held at Royal Farms in Felton.
New Castle Hundred Lions Club Our club took part in this year’s Separation Day Parade and
Festivities on June 14th.Several Lions marched and showed the
Lion Spirit for the city of New Castle. We were entry number 46 out of 55 entries.
Lord Baltimore Lioness Club On May 21st at IRHS Auditorium, we presented $1000 Schol-
arships to two distinguished applicants. THANK YOU to all
who worked to make our Fashion Show a marvelous success. Our guests said that they had a wonderful time and
many stated that they looked forward to next year’s show.
Diabetes Corner: I have type 1 diabetes, use an insulin pump, and lead a
pretty stable life. Do I really have to check my blood
glucose 4-8 times a day?
Not necessarily. However, be sure to talk with your health care
provider before changing your glucose monitoring schedule. The safest days to reduce checks are very predictable ones,
when your blood glucose before breakfast is close to normal.
Take your normal boluses for any food you eat and pay close attention to any signs your blood glucose might be too high or
too low. Check your level if you are not sure. If
your food or activity varies from usual, you
should check more frequently. Finally, it’s al-ways wise to check your glucose before bed, just
to confirm that the day has gone as expected,
blood glucose-wise.

Forest High School Senior Awards Program by Ronald Burrows

Elevator Speech
A couple years ago we were encouraged to come up with an
elevator speech about Lions if were ever asked the question
“what do Lions do?” As Lions Lucille and Ed, from the Glasgow club, were having dinner at Friendly’s, wearing their
Lions jackets, the couple across the aisle asked that very
question. Here was an opportunity. Come to find out she had a relative who had applied for one of our scholarships in a past
year…..here was an opportunity to spread
our word…we need to be prepared with an
elevator speech.

To: Lions of MD 22 & MD 24
On Behalf of the Parade Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to say
thanks to the many Lions, Leos and Guests that participated in making the National
Memorial Day Parade a tremendous success. You braved the heat and made a
tremendous showing.
A special "Thank You" goes out to our Virginia International Director, Lion Dr.
Hauser Weiler. His presence on our Float honoring our veterans, was one of the high points for the Lions of our Districts.
Our thanks also go out to Past International Director Joe Gaffigan who continues to be a champion of this wonderful event, not to
mention his participation in the planning and execution. Also thanks to Dane LaJoye at LCI for keeping us and the Parade in mind
and continuing to find the funds to keep us going.
Many thanks to our friends at Canada Dry for their continued support of Lions in the Parade. Their donation of water and soda
helped keep us “refreshed” and hydrated during our long hot day.
Our Float was very well made and decorated, thanks to Shaw Parades. They also took special care of our float riders, providing
extra chairs to accommodate all who felt they could not make the walk.
Advertising our goal of generating the collection of 500 pairs of glasses did lots to raise public awareness of one of the many things
that Lions do
Thanks to the many Lions and their families who were unable to march, but came out to view and lend support to this effort. Your
support did not go unnoticed.
None of this would have been possible were it not for the untiring effort
of the “Parade Committee” who worked tirelessly and gave freely of
their time to make this a reality. They have my undying gratitude.
Thankfully yours
Ed "Woody" Woodard, PDG
2014 Parade Committee Chairperson

One Person Can Make A Difference
One morning, just before dawn, a man woke early so he could watch the sunrise over the ocean. As he walked along the beach
he came across a young girl who seemed to be doing something peculiar. She was picking up starfish and throwing them into the
sea – one after another. He asked her what she was doing. “The tide washed up all these starfish and they can’t get back by
themselves,” she said. “They will die in the sun if I don’t throw them back into the water.”
The man looked up and down the beach at the thousands of stranded starfish. He couldn’t help telling her, “But there are too
many starfish to save before sunrise. Why bother? You won’t make much of a difference.” She paused for a moment, then picked up another starfish and threw it as far as her slender arm could manage. With a satisfied grin, she turned to the man and
simply said, “I made a difference to that one.”
Thanks for Making a Difference.
