Dear Parent,
Welcome to the May edition of the Secondary School newsletter.
May and June are a time of the year when the school really shows its
true colours as a community of caring learners. With the Year 11, 12
and 13 students under intense pressure with their final exams it is
good to see how the school community pulls together, with teachers
continuing to offer extra revision classes right up to the day of the
exam and the other students tiptoeing past the exam hall so as not
to disturb their older peers.
It is also a month is which we have focused on safeguarding the
children in our community, saying no to bullying in the school and
saying no to antisocial behavior. Again, I have been impressed by
how quickly students and staff have pulled together on these issues.
The coming week we look forward to the Year 6 joining us for a
week, during which they will meet and get to know their tutors for
next year and experience some of the subject classes in the
Secondary school. Parents have also been invited in to get a taste of
what life will be like for the Year 6s in Secondary. To make sure they
feel at home and surrounded by friendly faces many of our Year 9
students have volunteered to be buddies for the week.
Kind regards
Trevor Spence

Events and Trips
STEM showcase
60 students from MIS took part in the
annual STEM showcase event on
Wednesday 24th May at the COB
building in Mesaieed. They showed a
passion for their projects and great
knowledge of finding real life solutions,
for sometimes complex problems. We
invited our sister school Dukhan English
school and local schools in our
communities to take part. Our guests
were super impressed and were very
complimentary at how inspiring our
students were. They showed real
enthusiasm and were ideal role models
for the school.
In the STEM instant challenge our team
managed to beat off competition from the
opposition- Dukhan and TNG School, to win
first place for creating the tallest freestanding
tower from spaghetti and marshmallows in 30
minutes. It was nail biting to watch and our
team worked well collaboratively using their
critical thinking skills to bring the trophy home.
Well done to the team: Zahran Hanapi, Callum
Preston, Muhammad Muhsen, Sabeeh
Masood, and Kalana Lasanga.
A number of special awards were awarded by
Mr. Preston and Mrs. Hussain (Principal of DES) many were awarded to our students, well done to
all of you that participated and thank you to all staff and parents that were involved.

Middle School Model United Nations
Walking through gate 6 of the
Qatar National Conference
Centre, the MIS delegates
barely contain their thrill at
being at the 3rd annual
Middle School Model United
Nations, 2017. The large,
spacious (and well air-
conditioned) hallway greets
them as they step in. There
are familiar faces in the
crowd, out of people that
have come from different
countries; Abu Dhabi, UAE,
Saudi Arabia. There is a
definite buzz in the air; a
distinct tingle that tells you
you’re actually there; that
the anticipation coming from the hearty breaths of people fill the air. This was only a starter of what
the conference had in store for our delegates.
The MSMUN conference was a huge success. The young, aspiring delegates that attended all left
with a smile on their face, all readily admitting that they had fun. Of course the crazy bus ride back
with the charades and truth or dare games certainly made up for any disappointments. Each of
the separate committee rooms had their own magic in it, with all the delegates slowly getting
accustomed to the strict but friendly atmosphere of the conference (what, with the stern THIMUN
procedures), and getting into the beat of the debate.
Some of the veteran delegates, Kalana Senevirathne (delegate and ambassador of Viet Nam),
Jannatul Afifa (delegate and ambassador of Sweden) and Nour Darwish (delegate of Viet
Nam),were already accustomed to the surroundings of the QNCC and the general flow of the
debate. However for the freshly new delegates, the grandeur of the conference centre had their
jaws dropping all the way to the ground, and perhaps, with the sheer number of people that
attended (around 650 delegates), a hint of anxiousness. But that nervousness was soon to be
replaced with a hungry fire to get their opinions across, defend resolutions, and get recognition.
Overall, the conference was a brilliant experience and everyone came back with something more,
whether that be friends, emotions, skills, etc. MUN has proved to be an important part of many
people’s lives, and for the delegates that went MS, it may only be just the beginning.

Parent Coffee Meetings
This term we started our first Parent Coffee Meetings where parents
were invited to come and have a coffee and chat with the
school’s senior leaders about a range of issues. We discussed lots of
topics including homework, uniform, parent-teacher meetings and
reports. Thank you to those of you who attended and we look
forward to many more of you coming to chat with us when we will
continue from September.
Your feedback as parents is vital in ensuring that we continue to
improve as a school and work together in partnership to achieve
our mission and vision.
Celebrating Achievement
AT MIS we love to celebrate ours students’ achievements. The three
broad strands of achievement we celebrate are;
Excellence, such as excellence in external exam results.
Success: such as the Biology Olympiad success mentioned below.
Endeavour: such as the Key Stage awards opposite.
Over the last month we have held two special assemblies. The
Lower School Prizegiving Assembly, in which we celebrated
excellence, was held on the 21st May and a Celebrating Success
assembly was held on the 25th May. Celebrating Endeavour awards
are given in weekly assemblies. Next Year we plan two Celebrating
Excellence (Prizegiving) assemblies, one for Year 11-13, once they
have received their Exam certificates, and one for Year 7-10
towards the end of the year. We will also have a Celebrating
Success assembly at the end of each term and we will continue to
Celebrate Endeavour through weekly assemblies.
The Prizewinners of this year’s Lower School Prizegiving Assembly
are listed on the last page of the newsletter.

MIS students literally in the news.
MIS Arabic department made a very successful visit
to Al Jazeera media institute in Doha. Students
from Key stage 3 participated in this visit to this
worldwide famous channel, one of the most
prestigious institutions in Qatar. The aim of this visit
was to consolidate students understanding of the
topic “Manifestations of political, economic and
social renaissance in Qatar” and the Amir's 2030
vision as a part of their Qatar History curriculum.
Our students were so happy and excited and
enjoyed the visit.
MIS and the Arabic department would like to
thank Al Jazeera staff for the warm welcome
and their support to our students.
We hope that this rich educational visit will
become a tradition and repeated every year.

Angles in Polygons from Different Angles
Earlier this term, students in Year 10 Set 1 experienced curiosity, exploration and discovery of
angles in polygons using deep learning activities such as Investigation, Reasoning, Comparing
Methods, Pictorial/Concrete Representation, Historical Links, and STEM/Problem-solving.
To set the scene, they were asked to recall any
relevant facts, discuss in groups and write key points
to solve the problem:
This starter made them not only curious about angles
in polygons but also encouraged higher order
thinking right from beginning.
Five minutes into the lesson students felt the need to
explore angles in polygons. The class teacher, Mr.
Qarni, facilitated their exploration with the cutouts of
these triangles:
Students then recalled the properties of 2-D
shapes learnt in KS2/3 and completed the
above jigsaw in groups of 3 or 4 whilst peer
learning. They formed the opposite required
jigsaw linking their prior learning to the new
learning.
Students then explored facts about polygons
working on the below differentiated tasks in
pairs/groups. Got your facts right? Use and
apply on a small scale problem before going back to the main polygon problem at the top.

Science
Amongst the best scientists in Qatar!
This year four of our Year 12 students participated in the Qatar Biology Olympiad, which is part of
International Biology Olympiad. This is a very prestigious and extremely challenging competition.
The competition was divided into four rounds.
In the first-round participants sat an online test comprising of 60 multiple choice questions. Out of
about 1200 Biology students who entered in the first round, the top 300 students who achieved at
least 95% went through to round 2. In round 2 the participants had to sit a written paper and only
the top 150 students made it through to round 3. In round three students sat a practical exam and
only the top 20 students made it through to round 4.
All four of our students who made it to the last 20 and Round 4. For the final round students had to
attend specialist Biology STEM workshops for 2 months twice a week provided by the MOE. In these
workshops, students learnt about specialist practical techniques such as colorimetry,
electrophoreses, as well how to perform statistical and data analysis. At the end of this round
students had to sit another examination.
Our students did extremely well and I have the pleasure in announcing that all four of our Year 12
students were awarded prizes. Shamim Hyat Mahmud came second in Qatar and won a silver
medal and three of our students got bronze awards, Lara Akram Abdulmohsen Abdullah Gulzar,
Muhammad Osama Kashif. Notably Mesaieed International School won 3 out of 10 possible Bronze
awards. Another set of impressive outcomes in the field of science and research for our school and
the science department.
Design and Technology
Exemplar design and production
Under the theme….. “FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY”, the best of our students work was showcased
during the STEM Exhibition and competition hosted by the Mesaieed International School this year.
It was a chance for all our visitor who came, to see the excellent and well-crafted design pieces,
ranging from small book ends to larger pieces of furniture designed by our students from year 7
straight up to year 13. The feedback received from the display was extremely positive as some
visitors were taken aback by the craftsmanship put in pieces created by the students studying
design and.
Special mention must be made in particular to one piece of work in the form of a children seating
that was designed and made by Ditya Taryana. It was only a few days before the display when
on visiting the Edexcel online training and viewing the resources, that we realized her coursework

project that was manufactured got special recognition and was used as exemplar resources by
the Exam board to show outstanding finished practical product. This piece of work was selected
from thousands of other pieces of pupils work all over the world. This showed how well our student
are doing at MIS and are using their design skill to be innovative and creative.
Well done to Karl and Ezekiel who was on hand at the STEM display to talk about the products on
display and what we do in Design and Technology on a daily basis...

Creative and Performing Arts
Exhibition shows off talented student artists
The Art Department were very
proud to present the work of their
current GCSE, AS and A2
students at the recent open
evening. Work was well received
with lots of praise from visitors,
impressed by the talent and skills
of the MIS Art students. There
were also many serious enquiries
from visitors asking if any of the work was for sale!
The Art Department would like to
congratulate all our students who put in their
hard work and effort throughout the year, so
that this exhibition could be such a triumph,
and we wish them every success in their
future studies.
We would also like to thank the parents who

Showcasing talent
The School's creative and performing
arts faculty vision is to provide a rich
cultural hub within Qatar and
eventually become renowned for its
dynamic arts and music scene.
This year the faculty took a step towards that vison by
showcasing students’ 2017 GCSE and A LEVEL work
through dancing, singing, playing and through an art
exhibition. All their hard work paid off and the
showcase was extremely successful and well supported
by parents and students.
We also welcome Philip Mercer,
MIS’s newly recruited professional
musician. He brings with him (along
with his beloved saxophone, flute &
clarinet) a wealth of worldwide
performing and teaching
experience. With six specialist
teachers who are practicing
musicians, artists and writers who
are well-connected within their
industries, we are sure the Creative
and Performing arts will really
blossom over the next year and
give our students the stage to show
off their talents that they deserve.

Book Fair hits town
The Primary School had a
Book Fair installed for three
days and invited the
Secondary students to
attend. We were delighted
to be able to take students
from years 7 to 9 on a
rotational basis to allow
them access to this
wonderful resource. Mrs.
Chereni and Mr. Artus
coordinated the
Secondary School’s
participation and have
promised that another
Book Fair will be
forthcoming soon.
As the summer approaches we will be supplying students with reading lists and reading
challenges for the holidays. Your support in encouraging daily reading would be greatly
appreciated and it will have untold benefits in all subject areas.

Sports and House
Brilliant like a diamond.
The Diamond League athletics events happen around the world at 14 venues from May until
September and many top international athletes compete at these events. The Diamond League's
aim is to "enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics by going outside Europe for the first time." In
addition to the original Golden League members (except Berlin) and other traditional European
meetings, the series includes events in China, Qatar, and the United States.
The first meet of the season was in Doha. Mesaieed International School was invited to attend the
trials. Which took place at the Aspire track on 26th April. The teams competed in the 4 x 100m relay.
The qualifiers being the first 2 in each heat and the next fastest 4 teams would compete in the
final. Other schools which were competing included Al Khor, Newton International, the American
School of Doha and the Indian School in Doha.
After winning both of their heats, both teams qualified to run at the Diamond League meet at
Qatar Sports Club. We arrived at the stadium at 4.45pm and all of the athletes were nervous, but
ready for the challenge. After some light training, the girls were first to compete and the order of
the runners were as follows:
1. Priscilla Tawiah, 2. Faustina
Mintah, 3. Rebecca
Macauley, 4. Ama Adu.
They ran superbly and won in
a time of 52.77 seconds,
beating The American School
by 1.26 seconds and the Qatar
National Team by over 5
seconds.
The boys ran after this race
and had a tough challenge to
beat the Aspire National
team, which consisted of
national standard athletes.
The team was:
1. Emmanuel Hanson, 2.
Alberto Macuvele, 3. Lucas
Danquah, 4. Ekimini
Udosen
Secondary Newsletter Thursday, 08 June 2017

They ran superbly and won in a time of 43.87 seconds, beating MES
by 0.7seconds and the Qatar National Team by 2 seconds.
Unfortunately the victory was later crossed out when a video
recording showed a split second infraction.
The achievement of the teams has been fantastic and has once
again highlighted the strength and depth that are evident in sport
at the school. Much time and effort is put into working hard
through training sessions with fixtures and tournaments against
other schools, which is thanks to a very dedicated team of staff
within the Physical Education department.
All of the athletes in the team are now linked with professional
sports clubs within Qatar and they are working hard to try to
compete at a level which may well enable them to participate on
a professional stage in the near future. MIS works alongside sports
clubs and encourages students to join clubs and gain expert
advice and coaching to give them the best opportunities for the
future.
The school will continue to produce top quality athletes and I am
hopeful that next year, we will once again participate to the
highest level, at the Diamond League games.
Badminton success and other sporting achievement
The boys have entered teams in both the table tennis and
badminton QUESS competitions this term. The table tennis team
came a creditable 3rd, while the badminton team were worthy
winners of the trophy. This is a fantastic achievement and the first
time that the school has won the tournament.
We have competed at U12/13/14 levels for the boys and at U13/14
levels for the girls in the QUESS basketball. The highlight was for the
U12 boys to reach the final, only to be beaten by 1 point in a very
close match.
