Changi Beach Club, Singapore 1

Why Vision 5000?

At the last Annual General Meeting, we took over as the fully elected Management Committee of Changi Beach Club. It was a dismal picture that greeted us – a low staff morale, high staff turnover, heaps of complaints about the caterer and a cash reserve of only $3m to take care of our major problem, a land lease which will expire in about 6 years’ time.

We realised much time had been lost and we cannot afford to linger and lament over our problems any longer. All 7 of us felt there is still the glimmer of hope and a bright light at the end of the tunnel. So with our hard work and efforts, some new and clever initiatives and more importantly, with our members’ support, we feel we can do it together and give CBC a new lease of life, one filled with vibrancy and vitality, and hopefully, one that will last longer than 6 years.

Our new Management Committee has set a new vision for the club and we call it VISION 5000. Why Vision 5000?

As at 31 July 2010, we have about 3,400 members and we need to go all out to promote and add 1,600 new members. We need a strong, stable and sufficiently large membership to sustain CBC. The drive to recruit new members will address our most important priority and that is to RAISE FUNDS for our land lease renewal reserve fund. We could do this through other means, like increasing subscriptions, levying a top-up, or imposing minimum spending but these measures will only further burden our members and we would like to avoid doing these where we can. In order to kick start this campaign, we have launched some attractive special offers for a limited time, targeting conversion of Junior Members, ex Junior Members and children of current members who were not Junior Members. Letters of invitation have been sent out and we hope you will support the Club by taking up the offer where applicable. Please remember this is a good offer for a limited period only.

In addition, we will also be conducting a special membership drive to recruit new members and we need our members’ help to spread the news of our membership drive through word of mouth. Details of this special promotion are in circulation. The target of another 1,600 new members will add $1 million more to our subscriptions each year and this will help us to not only cover the overheads without running into deficit but also improve our cash flow. The money from the entrance fees of the 1,600 new members will help to top up the reserves needed for our land lease renewal. And when we achieve our Vision 5000 targets, we can then look into activating full transferability for our memberships. Because by then, with a sustainable membership base and a revived Club, we hope that our membership will also be enhanced in value.

Our VISION 5000 plan also addresses the issue of staff turnover, improvements in service standards, issues with the Caterer, organising more Sports and Social activities to bring members back and streamlining some activities to allow for more participation by members. We also looked into improving interaction with members by providing for more communication with members through email broadcasts, sms updates and flyers. To enable us to do this more effectively, we request all members to update their particulars with the Club and to provide an email address, if you have one.

Our CBC Annual DINNER & DANCE is just around the corner. This has always been the main event of the Club and this year, I would like specially to ask all members to come and support this function. It will be a good opportunity for you to catch up with your MC members, other CBC members and friends and have a fun and enjoyable time ushering in the year 2011. Past years have seen an overwhelming response to this event, so to avoid disappointment, please make your reservations early.

The journey ahead is not an easy one for the Club, but we assure you that seven of us in the Management Committee will give you our full commitment and will do our best to give the Club a longer life and with your support, understanding and full co-operation, we are confident that we can bring our Club to the next level. Thank you.

Best RegardsWilson ChuaCBC Chairman

Tao Li Training in CBCMembers may have noticed that in the months of July and August, half of the Club’s swimming pool was reserved for training. It was Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) using CBC as the

alternative training venue for national and Sports School swimmers. This was because their usual training venues were being used for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG),

Badminton Court 2 is now open for bookings on Friday evenings. One hour booking for evenings is now allowed on condition that bookings are not made more than two days before date of play.

Members may also join Badminton or Tennis Social Evenings on an impromptu basis by paying nominal fee on the day of participation. Of course to enjoy these evenings on a regular basis, it will be more worthwhile to fully enrol!

Swimming starlet, Ms Tao Li was one of the swimmers training for upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games in India. When asked about her experience in CBC, she was pleased with the arrangement as with scenic view, Olympic sized swimming pool, idyllic atmosphere and friendly Club Members, CBC is an ideal location for her training. Other than the two daily swimming sessions in the pool, Ms Tao also visited the Club’s gym for training too. Fully equipped with a variety of equipment, Ms Tao enjoyed a comprehensive and total work out regime that would beef up her core muscle groups.

Changi Beach Club is proud to have Ms Tao Li training in our Club and wishes her the best for her upcoming competitions!

Changi Beach Club, Singapore

this couple celebrated their anniversary with us!

Next, we had the Blowing of the Vuvuzela and the Guessing of Song Titles. In between the games, our resident band, Paul & Babe performed repertoires which enticed the participants to dance their heart out!

Club Happenings

national Day swingThis year, we celebrated National Day in advance due to the long weekend. After a delectable dinner that was provided, participants by now have submitted their quiz sheets. They then started swinging to the National Day Swing!

The evening kicked off with Changi Beach Club’s very own National Day version of ‘Don’t Forget the Lyrics’. There were 2 selections, ‘Home Grown’ and ‘Veteran’. ‘Home Grown’ comprised of various National Day theme songs from the 90s such as ‘Count on Me Singapore’ to this year’s theme song ‘Song for Singapore’. By the word ‘Veteran’, most of you would have a rough idea of what were the songs. Clue: Singalong. Everyone had a hilarious time!

A symbolic cake cutting ceremony was done after the patriotic singing of the National Anthem. Prizes for the quiz were given out and lucky draws was conducted by members of the Management Committee present. Most participants continued to dance the night away.

5

Interested in singing and has a passion for the oldies? Now you don’t have to pay a single cent to participate!

Paul, one half of our resident band will be providing musical accompaniment to the singing members and often than not, members are so caught up with the tempo that most of them ended up on the dance floor dancing away!

What are you waiting for? Join us every first Sunday of the month!

*Light refreshment provided!

On 22 August 2010, Sunday Chan Ah Kow Hall was filled with 60 passionate Mahjong players geared up for the challenge. Not only the seniors, but we saw an increase in younger participants! There were 3 rounds and each round lasted for 2 hours. The participant with the highest score will be winner. Before the start of each round, participants were asked to draw their table number.

During the game intervals, participants were served with 3 meals and a tea break. Sounds great? Join us in the next competition!

The top and lucky draws winners were announced by Mr Stanley Foo, Social Chairman at the end of the event. A booby prize was also given out!

Management Committee members Mr Wilson, Mr Richard Tay and Mrs Amy Teo were present to give out the prizes.

This time round, we had 2 players tied for 4th position and to avoid disappointment, Management Committee gave an additional 4th prize.

Congratulations to the Mahjong winners!

Once again, the turnout was close to capacity and both members and their guests savoured the moments socialising and bonding through music, dance and interacting; that is why it is called ‘Social Tea Dance’!

Not a dancer but is keen to participate in the future? We have just started social dance class for beginners, every Sunday at 7.30pm – 8.30pm. The genre will be Cha-Cha, Rock & Roll, Disco Rock and Waltz. Sign up now and be prepared for the Social Tea Dance 2011!

Contact Eve at 6546-5213 or e-mail at [email protected] for more information!

Thirty-four bowlers turned up in colours that represented Singapore’s flag at the Bowling Centre to celebrate the nation’s 45th year of independence on Sunday, 8 August 2010.

There were 8 teams with patriotic names such as Democracy, Equality, Justice, Peace, Progress, Purity and Virtue, Universal Brotherhood and Young Nation!

Team Democracy took the top spot with a total score of 3,892 pins, followed by Team Equality and Team Justice. After the games, the members had a hearty buffet dinner catered by Nonya’s Wok, followed by the prize presentation and a lucky draw with attractive prizes. Kudos goes to Mr Roland Tan, Ms Margaret Chan and Ms Catherine Low; for organising the event and all the participants for their support.

The event took place at Chinese Swimming Club on Saturday, 3 July 2010. Our youth bowler, Joelle Fung did the Club proud by winning the girl’s high game in the Mixed Foursome category. Keep up the good work and all the best in other tournaments.

Our under-21 youth snooker player, Teo Jun Jie James and Ong Jia Jun represented the Club in this tournament at West Coast Billiard Saloon. Despite facing tough competitors, James Teo lost in the Quarter Finals while Ong Jun Jie managed to go into the Finals. They certainly gained valuable experience from this competition to equip them for future competitions.

2nd inter-social Club golf tournament

In an effort to promote healthy living, CBC invited Ms Jerrica Ang, a certified yoga practitioner to share tips on practicing yoga with interested members. The class took place on Sunday, 1 August 2010. An avid yoga practitioner, Ms Ang generously shared with members on the importance of proper breathing techniques as it helps to alleviate stress caused by our surroundings. She also taught the members a variety of poses such as dancer’s pose, eagle pose and tree pose amongst others. One of the participants, Mr Andrea Ang also shared with the class on how yoga has helped him to keep his spinal problems at bay. The session ended with members going home feeling more light-hearted. If you have missed this class, look out for future classes!

Following the success of the inaugural event, the 2nd Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament was held at The Keppel Club. Despite it being postpone halfway due to inclement weather on the initial scheduled date, the excitement of the golfers remained high as they came together again to enjoy themselves in both the social and competitive categories. The inter-social club group also saw the addition of a new family member, The Tanglin Club. The growing popularity saw an increase of participants to 144 golfers and regardless of which clubs they were from, they bonded like one big family. Our golfers were proud to don specially customised “Golf Section” shirts for this tournament. The 3rd tournament is scheduled for October 2010. CBC is still looking for more members to join the Golf Section, so if you enjoy golf, sign up now!
