Incinerator community updateWestern BioEnergy will hold a com-
munity update info session on Thursday,June 23, 6-9pm at the Civic Centre, with apresentation at 7pm. The company is
proposing to develop a 33 MW wood-fuelled electricity generation facility onthe Tolko site, on the southwest, down-wind edge of Merritt. The project alsowill require a 3 to 3.5km long high-volt-age transmission line will deliver itselectricity to the BC Hydro grid. Saturday busRecently, the City of Merritt heard
from BC Transit that they will fund theirportion of the expansion to Saturday busservice and an additional 3 hours in theevenings. The City has already budgetedfor its portion. So starting July 2, busservice will run 6:15am-9:30pm 6 days aweek. Check the full schedule in the newriders guide, available this week.

innovationsAt the last meeting, Merritt City
Council directed Public Works to desig-nate a test area for planting perennials andplants that reproduce, rather than annualsevery year. This was a recommendationfrom the Communities in Bloom commit-tee. They agreed there would be a higherinitial outlay, but decided there would bea savings in the long run.
Council also directed Public Works toinvestigate and designate a test area to seedwhite clover over grass as an alternative tocontinued pesticide use, as recommended
by the Environmental AwarenessCommittee. Clover stays green and invadescommon weeds such as dandelions.
