Dear Friends of Aquinas & St. Mary’s, Lent comes for us Catholics involved in education at a very opportune time. With the busyness of the spring semester, we can tend to lose our focus on prayer and our spiritual life. Lent helps us to refocus our attention on our Lord, and the need we have to pray more, fast to discipline our bodies and wills, and be more attentive to the needs of the poor; truly anyone in need of God’s mercy. His Holiness Pope Francis has recently been encouraging all of us to seek God’s forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance. When was the last time you went to confession? Lent is the perfect time to go again. Our Catholic schools community will be losing three outstanding teachers and an administrator next year. Miss Carm Fiala, our St. Mary’s principal and Aquinas Middle School principal is retiring after 42 years at both of our schools! Carm has lived and breathed Catholic schools as a student, teacher, and administrator, and has been an incredible asset to Aquinas-St. Mary’s in a plentitude of different ways. We are very grateful for her and the impact she has had on our Catholic schools. She will be working at Aquinas next year in a part-time position with various duties. Sr. Frances Pytlik, 2nd grade teacher, is also retiring from full-time teaching, and will be back next year as a part-time reading specialist at St. Mary’s. Sr. Frances, an Aquinas alumnus, has dedicated her religious life to Catholic schools and her dear students. She has been a blessing at St. Mary’s for 32 total years, and we are grateful to her for her love of education and the love she showed to her St. Mary’s students. She has taught a total of 46 years, and she is well-deserving of a change in apostolate! Bonnie An-drews is retir ing from her 4th grade teaching position. She and her family members have been long-time sup-porters of Catholic education in Butler County, and she has been a tremendous teacher for our St. Mary’s Community for the last 17 years. She will also be greatly missed. Sr. Karen Marie Wilson, M.S., our Middle School Science teacher, is being reassigned by her Community to teach at Villa Marie School in Waverly. Sis-ter has a wonderful passion for science, for teaching, and for sharing that passion with her students. We are sad to be losing her and the presence of a consecrated religious in our school, but are grateful that Sr. Ann Ma-rie is staying as an English and Religion teacher at Aquinas. We are currently in the process of reviewing applications for our open positions and also sitting down for in-terviews with candidates. The administration and current teachers are interviewing the teaching position candi-dates, and a mix of diocesan administrators, Aquinas-St. Mary’s administrators, teachers, and school parents comprise a Selection Committee to decide on the next principal for St. Mary’s. We have been blessed with quality individuals that are interested in joining our schools for next year. Please pray for us that the Holy Spirit will guide our decision making in the next few months. After consulting with the Council of Administration, we have decided to create the Aquinas-St. Mary’s Board of Advisors (BOA). It will take the place of the Council of Administration, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The Board is made up of parent and community representatives that have specific expertise in matters of finance, facility and grounds management, outreach and institutional advancement. They will serve in an advisory capacity to the administration for both Aquinas and St. Mary’s Catholic schools. The Board of Advisors meets bi-monthly. The BOA will receive regular reports from the School Improvement Committee and the Intentional Discipleship Team. The BOA will also receive reports on the progress of all implementa-tion projects to keep the schools accountable to the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. Both the Aquinas and St. Mary’s School Councils will remain the same. God Bless you,
Fr. Sean Timmerman

Semester exams will count for 20 percent of the total semester grade, so I can’t stress enough the importance of being prepared. Please encourage your sons and daughters to prepare for these exams. AMS Art students try printmaking and clay In art, the seventh grade students have been printmaking. They started the project by drawing an animal. They added elements to the background to indicate its environment with line and texture. They printed the image using bright colored inks on different colored paper. We looked at Pop Art from the 70’s, and how artists used bright colors, and repeated images. The students arranged their prints in a similar way to resemble Pop Art. Grade 6B just finished working with clay in art. They created slab plates and bowls and added tex-ture to create an interesting border. They had fun mixing glazes to create colorful, functional pottery. Mrs. Joan Cech

Dear Parents of St. Mary’s Students:
Thursday, April 6, is a big day for St. Mary’s School students! They have their grand-
parents/grandfriends visiting in the morning from 10 a.m. through lunch and then in the
evening, the students have their Spring Program at 7 p.m.
Having their grandparents/grandfriends visit is such an exciting event for the children.
These special people in the students’ lives are very essential since the relationships of
these two generations can make a big difference. It is a connection with the values and
positive habits that must be developed in these young children. Grandparents, you are
important to your grandchildren, in so many ways.

The pre-kindergarten students have been busy creating water pathways at the water table. They are using funnels and tubes to create different paths for the water to go. It is fun to use our brains to figure out tricky problems like this! (Photo above) ~ Mrs. Rachel Wisnieski

Kindergarten News The kindergarteners have been learning some fun games in Math! Our Saxon program teaches two fun games that incorporate different math strategies. We first learned how to play the card game of War. This helps the students compare numbers and find the number that is the biggest. Second, we taught them how to play dominos. They had to match up the numbers and count the dots on the domino. They had fun playing with a partner for both games and teaching their own families at home! ~ Miss Kayla Mika and Mrs. Katie Smith Pictured below: Dirkson Kavan, Camden DeWispelare and Callie Muntz
Grade 1 News The first graders have learned nearly all of the addition and sub-traction facts that we will learn this year. When we introduce the facts, we always use some kind of manipulative to show how to put the numbers together or take some away. Then we spend a lot of time practicing the facts. Every day we have a fact practice paper to complete. We also go to the computer lab and do a program called Mad Minute. It allows us to practice the facts. After each prac-tice we do a one minute timed test on the facts we just practiced. In our classroom, we do Rocket Math. It’s also a one minute timed test. If we get all of our facts cor-rect in that minute, we can color in a part of our rocket. Our goal is to color the whole rocket before school is out for the sum-mer. Since we have flashcards for all or our facts, we can even prac-tice them in our classroom and they can be practiced at home as well. It’s important that all the facts are learned before the stu-dents go to second grade. (Photo at left.) ~ Mrs. Jennifer Suehl and Mrs. Sandy Vavrina

Grade 2 News
The fourth quarter in second grade is a very busy time! Students participated in their
monthly reading with the St. Joseph’s Court and Villa residents. This has definitely been a
highlight for both classrooms throughout the year. In math, we have been tackling the new
concept of multiplication! The students have been doing an amazing job, and now can
multiple by 0, 1, 10, and 100. We will continue to build on this throughout the last quarter
of second grade. Religion class has
been extremely busy with continuing
the preparation for first communion
which is only a month away! Second
graders are digging deep into the
parts of the Mass, and better under-
standing the sacrament they will soon
be receiving. And finally, we have put
the finishing touches on our Second
Grade Gold Rush piece, thanks to the
help of Joan Cech! We hope you enjoy
it!! (Photo to left.)

Grade 3 News During the month of March, the students took the Iowa Basic Skills Test. This is the first time that the third grade students have taken an achievement test like this, so it was a bit overwhelming. They put forth their best efforts. The best part was no homework! We are finishing our Social Studies unit on maps. The students have done a great job of showing their knowledge of continents, oceans, and even some of the states and capitals surrounding Nebraska. ~ Mrs. Tina Janak and Mrs. LaDonna Naiberk
Thank you! Thank you to all those who made the St. Mary’s Soup Sup-per such a big success. A special thanks to the committee that put in a lot of hours to make it happen. Thank you to all the parents and Grade 4 and 5 stu-dents who worked and all who supported the evening’s events! Thank you to Valeria and Victoria Whitmore and Caroline Slama for their donations to the St. Mary’s Library. ~ Sr. Michaelene Prater
March, 2017
Grade 4 News For our Gold Rush project every year, the fourth-graders make a fused glass ob-ject. Fused glass is when pieces of glass are heated in a kiln until they melt and fuse to-gether. We are visited by Mrs. Barb Green of Omaha. She does fused glass art as a hob-
by. This year, each student was given a square piece of white glass as a base. They could then create any de-sign they wanted by choos-ing glass pieces of any shape and color to layer on their base piece. Mrs. Green plans to fuse the base pieces together to make a platter which will be on the Gold Rush silent auc-tion. Watch for our fantas-tic art pieces and put in a bid! ~ Mrs. Bonnie Andrews and Mrs. Julie Smith
Grade 5 News The 5th graders participated in the DARE program presented by the Butler County Sher-iff's Department. The instructor, Deputy Tara Korthals, emphasized that the DARE pro-gram is about teaching students how to make good and safe decisions. Students practiced identifying problems, considering choices, and then evaluating those choices in real life situations. Topics included the effects of drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, handling stress, reading emotions, showing empathy, and being a good citizen. Some of the highlights of the DARE program included getting a look inside two patrol vehicles and meeting Ser-geant Whitmore and his K9 Sting. ~ Mrs. Pam Comte and Mrs. Alison Fozzard

WHAT IS SCIP? Aquinas Catholic participates in the School Community Intervention & Prevention (SCIP) Program. All students are informed of the SCIP Program and the SCIP Team Members the first day of school. SCIP provides prevention, education, and early intervention services. The responsibility and challenge of working with youth must be shared by parents, schools, and communities. Because children spend a majority of their days in the school setting, students are often identified by school staff, but may also be referred by peers, or by self-referral to an Aquinas SCIP Team Member. Reasons for a referral may be due to sudden changes in a student's behavior, exist-ing behaviors that may be escalating, or the display of unusual behaviors. These behaviors could be indicators of more serious underlying issues such as: Following a referral, the Aquinas SCIP Team assesses the need for further ac- tion, coordi-nating an interven- tion with the student and/or their parent/guardian when necessary. A plan is developed to address the concerns and increase the student's op-portunity to succeed in school. This plan may include a referral to an in-school resource or to one of our part-nering behavioral health agencies who will provide a screening for the student, at no cost to the family. The Aquinas SCIP Team continues to provide on-going support for the student. With parental consent, infor-mation from the agency screening can be shared with the SCIP Team, providing them with valua-ble information that will allow them to better assist the student and put the appropriate support systems in place. SCIP Teams have been trained not to label or diagnose, but to identify signs that may indicate a more serious problem. Sharing the concerns with parents and students gives them the opportunity to obtain ser-vices from the school or from a professional at a community behavioral health agency who can then deter-mine if further services are warranted. The Aquinas SCIP Team annually participates in continuing educational training. All referrals are kept confidential. Only team members, and those absolutely necessary, are included in the involvement of a referral.

High School students have big decisions to make. What is right for one student may not work for another. There are many paths to take after high school:
Two Year Colleges This is affordable and credits will transfer.
Technical Programs Students can earn a degrees in specific areas such as nursing or mechanics. Programs range from 9 months to 2 years.
Apprenticeships Students can learn firsthand by actually entering into the workplace. It is a great way to build your resume and meet new contacts.
Military Careers Many people enlist in the service and attend college or receive specific technical training and other skills through the military.
Four Year Colleges This will give students a bachelor’s degree. They will take a wide variety of classes and build a great knowledge base to be successful in the workplace. Think backwards…where do you want to be in ten years? Set goals and make decisions to get you there.

It is recommended that students test a minimum of two times. Most commonly testing begins during 11th grade but can also be taken earlier. Students have very busy schedules and the ACT is only offered on certain dates so it is important to plan ahead.
Why take the ACT?
The ACT helps you plan for your future. In addition to the tests, the ACT also provides you with a unique Interest Inventory and a Student Profile Section.
The ACT helps colleges find you. By taking the ACT, you make yourself visible to col-leges and scholarship agencies, so it's another way to help you get ready for life after high school.
Colleges will use your ACT results to determine class placement and scholarship awards.
How do I register for the test?
The ACT is only given on specific Saturdays. All stu-dents must register online at www.actstudent.org In order to register you will create a user account. The account will allow you to register for additional tests, view test results and send test scores.
