Mercy Maternal and Fetal MedicineJust steps away from our Labor and Delivery Unit, our Maternal and Fetal Health Center offers the latest technology and advanced care to women who have high-risk conditions or complications during pregnancy.

The Maternal and Fetal Health Center is staffed by board-certified maternal-fetal specialists (also known as perinatologists), who work together with your obstetrician to help you achieve a healthy pregnancy and birth.

Labor & Birth UnitWhen it’s time to give birth, your physician and a team of specially trained health care professionals will care for you in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Our nurses monitor your labor progress while providing high-touch and high-tech care as needed. All of our nurses are trained to provide labor support and comfort techniques during labor and birth. The safety of mom and baby is our #1 priority. Anesthesiologists and certified nurse anesthetists provide 24/7 pain management care tailored to meet your individual needs.

Many expectant parents find comfort in knowing that, if needed, Mercy Birthplace - South has a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ready to address any newborn-related health concerns. The NICU, which is just down the hall from the Labor and Delivery Unit, is staffed by Mercy neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatologists.

And if your baby needs more advanced care, Mercy’s Emmerson Level III NICU, located inside Mercy St. Louis, provides the highest level of advanced neonatal care in the region. Our specially trained NICU transport team travels by land or helicopter to bring infants to the Emmerson NICU.

As part of Mercy Kids, the NICU is supported by more than 80 pediatric specialists. When your baby is ready to leave Mercy, we will give you the education and support you will need to help transition to life together at home.

Level II NICU

Antepartum CareOccasionally, it becomes necessary for a mom with a high-risk pregnancy (32 weeks and above) or symptoms to need extra care. This may require a hospital stay on bedrest or limiting activities to help the baby grow safely.

Mercy Hospital South provides comprehensive medical and nursing care in comfortable and supportive surroundings. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialist

physicians work closely with the patient’s primary care OB/GYN physician and neonatologists to ensure that mother and baby receive the best care possible.

We care for pregnant women with:• Pre-term labor (contractions

before 37 weeks)• Premature rupture of membranes

• Bleeding• High blood pressure

• Diabetes

• Smaller-than-expected fetal growth

• Pregnancy with more than one baby

• Polyhydramnious (more than expected amount of fluid around the baby)

• Ongoing hyperemesis (constant nausea and vomiting)

Our staff will help you find positive ways to handle the extra time on your hands and lessen the stress and worry, while taking special care of you and your baby.

Breastfeeding ClassExpectant and nursing mothers, and their partners, are encouraged to attend this class that offers tips on successful breastfeeding. Cost: $25

Caring for Your Newborn ClassIn this one-day class, detailed information about infant care, including feeding options, normal new born characteristics, reflexes, bathing and more is covered. The information in this class also is included in our six-week Lamaze/Infant Care Class. Cost: $60

CPR for Family and Friends: Infants and ChildrenThis one-session class has been developed by the American Heart Association and introduces expectant and new parents to the principles of basic life support for adults, infants and children. Each participant is required to register individually. Participants receive a course participation card. Cost: $20

Education and classesGrandparents ClassThis class is designed to meet the needs of new and expectant grandparents and to prepare them for their supportive role in the family. The goal of this class is to improve communication between the generations. A discussion of changes and current trends, including sleep positions, infant feeding and safety issues are among the topics covered. Participants also tour the Childbirth Center. Cost: $15 Labor and Birth Preparation (four-week series)The four-week Lamaze Class covers many topics to help prepare expectant parents for all aspects of childbirth. With the help of fathers or labor support partners, mothers are taught Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques to help them through labor. A movie about childbirth is shown, and tours of the Childbirth Center are given. The program includes the epidural information for women who are considering using epidural anesthesia during labor. (If registering for this class, we strongly recommend also taking the Caring for Your Newborn Class.)

Participants should bring two pillows and a blanket, dress comfortably and attend with the person who will be supporting them during labor. Cost: $75

Lamaze Class – One Day This class is intended for those couples unable to attend a four-week Lamaze Class. Participants should bring two pillows and a blanket, dress comfortably and attend with the person who will be supporting them during labor. Please bring a sack lunch. Cost: $100

Lamaze/Infant Care ClassThe 6-week Lamaze/Infant Care Class covers many topics to help prepare expectant parents for all aspects of childbirth as well as caring for their infant. With the help of fathers or labor support partners, mothers are taught Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques to help them through labor. A movie about childbirth is shown, and tours of the Childbirth Center are given. The program includes information for women who are considering using epidural anesthesia during labor. Where to go once you arriveParking

• Please park your car in the surface lot off of Kennerly Road by the main hospital entrance. • Valet is also available for a minimal fee; pull under the blue awning by the main entrance to the

hospital and the valet will greet you. Valet parking by the main entrance is available between 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; valet parking is also available outside the emergency room entrance from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Upon arrival

• Maternity patients and their partner should enter through the main entrance and proceed directly to the Labor and Delivery Unit. Take Elevator A to the 4th floor.

• Please note the main entrance is locked between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 5 a.m.; if you are arriving during those hours use the emergency entrance.
