Principal Report

Hello again and welcome to the end of Week 8. The last two weeks has seen a tremendous amount of roof activity and the builders are well ahead of sched-ule. This weekend the roofers are going to work through and try and get the centre section of the school completed so that the school can still function as close to normal as possible on Monday. From there, they will move down and start the last building on the school property and finish off with the Ag building. The plan is still to have it all completed by the school holidays or just into the first week. Students and staff have definitely got their steps up this week as access around the school was very limited and the only way to each end of the school was around the end of the buildings. Quite a walk from the office via the woodwork room end and down to the science labs. The staff have been counting their steps on their devices and recording them to see who works the most each day. I have heard of over 12,000 steps this week on one day, impres-sive. I think the students coped much better with all that extra walking then the staff did….. Wednesday this week was our CAPA night. What a fantastic night. It was lovely to see the great talent we have across our community with both MHS and MPS students providing some great showcases on stage. It was a very good roll up from our community of family and friends to come and wit-ness our version of Cinderella. My congratulations to the many staff involved but especially to Ms Buttriss for her show coordination and long term drama preparations, to Mr James for his musical talents being passed onto the many students on stage and in the stage crew, Ms Irons and her Hospitality team for their cooking and serving, Ms Hyland and the SRC for the snack bar and finally to the Office staff that once again stepped up to give their best to help the night be such a success. Well done MHS. Today, we had a working bee at the new front gardens and a number of members of our local Rotary came to offer assistance and advice. We appreciated their time and their knowledge so I offer a thankyou from the school community for your help. Year 12 are counting down their last two weeks of school. On Thursday Week 10, Year 12 will have their Breakfast at school followed by our School Graduation Assembly. This will culminate with the Formal at the Bowling Club on the Thursday night. After that Year 12 will be into final revision and study ready for their HSC examinations next term. I wish them all the best. Finally I thought I would share with our community something very special. As many of us are aware the NAPLAN test has gone through some changes and some debates state wide over the last couple of years. Putting all that discussion aside the graph below which was just released to schools this week shows our cur-rent Year 9 cohort growth since their NAPLAN test in Year 7. To summarise, our students have shown educa-tion growth (improvement) at levels higher than schools like us and also better than the state average. Gram-mar and punctuation are similar to state but I am very impressed with the growth of our students compared with their peers across NSW. This cohort might now have some pressure on them to keep up this growth un-til the HSC in 3 years. I look forward to those results. Well done Year 9. Our Year 7 results give us the base for measuring their growth in two years’ time as well as looking into what we can do to improve their growth, but their cohort results are also quite good. My personal thanks to the staff at the school that have put in a lot of effort to improve our students’ educational capacity and the staff all deserve our gratitude. Well done Murrumburrah High School staff.

The Book Nook

Have you ever seen the intensely absorbed expression on a child’s face when they are watching a show like Playschool while the presenter is reading a book? It’s like the rest of the world has completely dropped away and there is only the child, the pages of the book and the unfolding story being told by a unseen voice. Perhaps you read to your child when they were young and had the joy of seeing this rapt and total-ly engaged face. Why not try it now they’re older? Just 15 minutes a day can make a difference and you both get quality time together. Does it get any better? For those of you interested in a larger version of the graphic it can be found at - https://www.readaloud.org/

CAPA

Synopsis – Tonight we have a simple bed time story, right? Cinderella is meant to be quite straight forward. Grandpa has differing opinions on the classic fairy-tale and this sometimes leaves little Cin-dy confused and Grandma quite frustrated. A physical theatre production with minimal dialogue from Cinderella and crew we get to see our students act out this classic (with a little MHS twist, of course!) This year was fantastic as once again we got to celebrate the extraordinary performing and crea-tive talents of all of the students in our little learning community. This year’s CAPA had a theme of Cinderella: Two Sides to Every Story and our drama students did exceptionally well portraying the fairy-tale through narration and physical theatre. We had some exceptional singers in Riley, Tara, Maci and Stage 4 in their respective songs; not a dry eye in the house. We were blown away again by Maci as she was joined on stage to dance with Ruby to the song Head Above Water. Murrumburrah Public School joined us this year and rewarded us with the pantomime delights of Brooke and Joey as the stylish evil step sisters and their musical talents with the band and drum core. Of course these days would not go ahead without the fabulous staff behind the scenes. I would like to take this time personally to thank James Cronin for his efforts with the stage 4 singers and band and Kate van Leeuwen with her Art students for the wonderful and themed displays around the hall. We would have gone hungry and thirsty if it wasn't for Nicole Irons and her Hospitality students. Of course we wouldn't (I certainly wouldn't) have made it through the night without Ms Hyland and the SRC's sweet treats. The make-up and hair on the Drama students was beyond fantastic thanks to our wonderful makeup artists and hairstylists: Liz and Sarah. Thank you to Tara and Abbey for their excellent MC presentation! Last, but certainly not least, Xavier, Jasmine and Beau. You have one of the most critical jobs on the night. Without you all we would be in the dark and very quiet! Anyone I have missed PLEASE forgive me! You were essential and your efforts were very much appreciated but much like my Drama students on Thursday I'm a but worn out! Thank you all! See you next year! (It will be electrifying ;)) Ms Nicky Buttriss

FRONT MEMORIAL GARDEN

R U OK?

Yesterday on RU OK? Day students dressed in yellow and black and had a bake sale, selling yel-low meringues and cupcakes. Students are also creating a small film about RU OK day, which is in the process of editing. ‘Yarning with Yarn’ We also launched Yarning with Yarn. This social group will meet every Thursday Break 2 to learn the basics of knitting. However, the main pur-pose of this group is to give people the oppor-tunity to interact with teachers and other stu-dents on a social level and check in to see if eve-rything is okay. Once we can learn to knit, we are going to be making trauma teddies. Trauma teddies will then be donated to young children when they are in hospital or having medical testing.

Maths

This term in S4 Maths students have been investigating time zones and timelines, learning that Mathematics is everywhere including Geography and History. They have learnt where lots of different places are across the world and the time difference be-tween them. They also had a visit from Mr Hofman who spoke about his travels and how travel-ling over time zones can affect you, like arriving somewhere before the time you took off! Stu-dents then researched an event in History and constructed timelines. Topics chosen included the timeline of the 'Titanic', the life of Sir Robert Menzies, the history of cameras and the develop-ment of the Apple company (iPhone etc.). Students have also completed a unit on integers - positive and negative numbers. Here they looked at the occurrence of negative numbers and performed operations involving them. Students are also continuing to further develop their numeracy skills, working on order of opera-tions, decimals, fractions and percentage this term. Year 11 Standard Mathematics are currently preparing for their end of preliminary exams. This term they have been working through a Statistics unit, looking at collecting data, organising data and analysing and then drawing conclusions from that data. They have also analysed data such as motor vehicle statistics and environmental data to draw conclusions about insurance rates and water and power usage. Next term students will begin their HSC studies, with students either taking Standard 1 or 2 (ATAR) pathway. Lee Hyland
