white mass tone are paired with a high metallic luster that creates a mirror-like eect. Timiron

Ice Crystal also strikes the right balance between transparency and coverage. Whats more, the

    INTRODUCING DHA PLUS

SELF-TANNING WITHOUT THE ODORTheres plenty to like about sel-tanners: theyre easy to use, ast-

acting and they give your skin that wonderul sun-kissed look! But

using sel-tanning ormulations is not sunshine and roses all the time:

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) the ingredient responsible or the pleasing

delights can leave something to be desired. When DHA is consumed,

either in the container or during the tanning process, cosmetic

ormulations oten produce an unpleasant odor. You can solve this

problem at the source with one o our ingredients: DHA Plus.

DHA PLUS: IMPROVING A GOOD THINGThe innovation behind DHA Plus is that it prevents typical DHA odors rom

orming instead o masking the smell the way other products approach this

subject. And how does DHA Plus perorm in cosmetic ormulation? The

results o our studies speak or themselves: In an in-house study, 100 % o

consumers surveyed said the ormulation with DHA Plus smelled better

than the one with DHA. In an external in vivo study, 29 consumers and

three proessional testers reported that DHA Plus emitted a signiicantly

weaker odor during the tanning process than DHA.

To learn more about DHA Plus from the market leader for DHA, write to Merck

at [email protected] or visit www.merck4cosmetics.com/DHA Plus.

    WHATS THE NEXT STEP?

We can put you in touch with our specialists at your nearest

Application Technology Center. Theyre well-versed in fnding

the right raw materials and showing you how to make the most o

them. Our ormulation experts will also save you time by ensuring

that your raw materials rom Merck are compatible with each

other. And when its time to provide documentation, youll fnd

that Merck has already done all the work or you. Any way you

look at it, taking the next step with us simplifes your business.

    WHATS THE TREND ALL ABOUT?

The operative word here is simpliy. More and more consumers

are looking or uss-ree cosmetics that oer an added beneft.

Take multi-tasking oundation: It moisturizes as it corrects skin

tone and diuses light with just one application. Multiple benefts

like these help consumers quickly and easily choose and apply their

products. So color and skin eel still play a key role, but otheractors such as anti-aging active ingredients and anti-oxidants

gain in importance. At Merck, we can simpliy your customers

decisions and your business, too. To help you stay in ront o this

trend, we oer you all the raw materials you need or multi-task-

ing products active ingredients and pigments rom one source.

    WHATS IN IT FOR YOU?

Multi-tasking make-up represents an excellent opportunity or

your products to stand out rom the competition. As this trend

develops, claims rom the felds o personal care and skin care

anti-aging, moisturizing, UV protection, and minerals to name

but a ew will be integrated into color cosmetics. These claims

will also surace in product advertising, so youll be able to com-

municate multiple benefts or one product. In the oundation

example we discussed earlier, you could say that your product

protects, moisturizes, corrects skin tone, and supports a perect

    fnish all in one.

EXCELLENT PAYOFFLipstick should glide onto lips and eel comortable

    on the skin.

SUFFICIENT COVERAGELips look their best when saturated not spotted with color.

NURTURING INGREDIENTSWhether they contain Vitamin E or our RonaCare AP,

lipsticks can help lips look good and eel good, too.

LONG-LASTINGNo one wants to reapply ater

    just one hour.

WORRY-FREE USECustomers need to hear that your lipstick is made out

o high-quality, pure ingredients beore they apply it.

O course, this isnt everything you need to think about when

ormulating your next lipstick. Shine and temperature stability are

important, too. The level o shine your lipstick should provide

will ultimately depend on current trends. As ar as temperature

is concerned, in warmer climates nobody wants their lipsticks to

turn out too sot or sun-bleached. You can keep a lipstick stable

by adding wax or liquid oil to raise or lower the melting point.

As you can see, todays lipsticks need many things at once. To give

you some ood or thought on how to turn a good lipstick into an

excellent lipstick, we sat down with Christian Reischneider.

    COSmagazine:Whats the basis o a good lipstick?

Reischneider:At the heart o every lipstick, youll fnd a mixture

o waxy and oily components. This is what carries skincare

components i you choose plus a color component made o

    colorants and eect pigments.

COSmagazine:And what about shine whats the right amount?

Reischneider:However much you want! Our customers products

span the entire spectrum, rom satin gloss to high gloss. The nude

and natural look, or example, really plays up the idea o transpar-

ency without using lots o color and shine. At the opposite end, the

glamour look relies on strong colors with sensational pearlescentpigments to catch as much light as possible and emit plenty o glitter

in return. Mercks product portolio has all o the pearlescent pigments

our customers need to create these looks, plus everything in between.

COSmagazine:What are the hallmarks o an excellent lipstick?

Reischneider:There are three things I look or right away. The frst

is the quality o the color is it pure and o good quality? At Merck,

we perorm quality analyses, including all possible impurities to the

strictest standards. The second thing I look or is 100 % light stability.

This ensures that my beautiul red lipstick wont change to orange,

even i its wrapped in transparent packaging, but especially when the

consumer applies it to her lips. Our Xirona Le Rouge pigment is per-ect or creating head-turning reds that stay red. The third thing is to

do what the customer will also do beore buying: Test it on the skin

and look or application, skin eel, spreadability, even distribution,

coverage, and that special color and glossy sparkle eect you are

looking or. I a product ails this sensory test, people will never buy it.

COSmagazine:Reds never gone out o style, but what are the

    in lipstick colors right now?

Reischneider:The current color spectrum is quite conserva-

tive. There are plenty o red shades where the accents range

rom purple over red-brownish shades to pink. Wherever red is

headed, Xirona Le Rouge will perorm admirably.

MAKE YOURLIPSTICKMULTI-TASK:AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN REIFSCHNEIDER,

LABORATORY MANAGER FOR COSMETIC PIGMENTS AT MERCK

When your customers choose or change their lipstick, they want

a lot more than beautiul color. Here are some o the key tests

    they subject your lipsticks to:

MAKE QUICKWORK OF GMP WITH MERCK

As you may know rom ISO 22716, cosmetics legislation

(Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009) stipulates that

fnished cosmetic products must meet cosmetic GMP standards.

This means that raw materials or those products have to meet

certain criteria, too. To help manuacturers achieve this goal, the

European Federation or Cosmetic Ingredients (EFCI) updated

its own guidelines on raw materials or cosmetic products in

2008. And we have some good news or you: The lions shareo Mercks portolio o active ingredients and pigments or

cosmetics already adheres to the latest EFCI guidelines. Certif-

cation or the rest o our portolio is in the pipeline.

Why ocus on raw materials? When they adhere to GMP, youll

fnd it easier or your fnished products to meet GMP criteria

saving you time and money on certifcation. So when you

choose our raw materials, you can rest easy, knowing that GMP

    wont present any obstacles.

Write to [email protected] to learn which o your raw materials

    rom Merck are GMP-certied.

COSmagazine:Where do special eects ft into a good lipstick?

Reischneider:Color isnt the only way to help your lipstick stand out

on the shel. Special eects can really help attract your consumers.

Take color travel, rom red to copper and then gold easy with our

Xirona Volcanic Fire pigment. Need gold and silver? Just add Xirona

Moonlight Sparks. It shits between gold and silver, and makes your

lipstick look simply abulous even when its still on the shel. Espe-

cially when the colors dont dier too much, you can still make your

range stand out with the special eects that pearlescent pigments

deliver. Another part o special eects is personal care. When you in-

clude moisturizers or anti-aging ingredients such as RonaCare AP consumers will recognize your products as the lipsticks that do more.

    WANDERLUST

IN BLOOM lives in harmony with the rhythm o the seasons and sets a roman-

tic, yet novel and modern tone. In a hippie deluxe spirit, classic beauty is perked

up with obeat eects as a counterpoint to a resh and quirky personality.

countryside fowers and oliage, the pink and yellow-green palette plays with

    golden refections.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURE Tender and tart greens complement perectly pale and

matte complexions. Whether its pale greenish golds or natural lip tones with a

light iridescent sheen, an ultra-resh monochromatic beauty mood dominates.

WANDERLUST looks to traveling and nomadism to bring adventure and open

up new horizons. Tuning into the slow trend, it also celebrates the luxury o

bare essentials. Cosmopolitan and sophisticated, the look is sheer East meets

West and easy elegance. Glamorous beauty exudes a new nude spirit with

washed, aded, and bleached hal-tones oset by more intense shades and

    emme atale-eel.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURE Playing with shadow and light on very pale com-

plexions, make-up is heavy on the eyes smoky or greasy and mostly matte.

    red, blue, and ocher.

SOLARIS turns to the sun or reassuring warmth and comort and has the

warm and lively personality to match. With a ocus on the essentials, a strong

sense o style is equal parts sophisticated and natural. As the sun exerts its

power o attraction, glowing reddish and solar bright tones come to the ore.

Beauty is famboyant, with earthy tones and updated terracotta or both youngand mature looks.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURE Reddish ochers, burnt oranges, ery reds, and charred

browns are contrasted with chalk white and pigmentary blue. Glowing complex-

ions are accentuated with a rich array o warm dark tones and a new twist to

    smoky eyes.

CHEERFUL calls or simple and resh designs that match a young, careree,

and sassy attitude. New colors and eects remain on eminine and cute. This

simple, pragmatic, and optimistic liestyle is refected in fag-inspired primary

tones red, white, and blue that are paired with perky pastels and grating

brights. Easy, minimalist, and retro, the mood has a resh youthul eel or day

and a graphic orientation or night.

DISTINCTIVE FEATURE Make-up and complexions are light and airy, with

cheeks and temples being the most made-up eatures. The intense palette plays

with subtle pearly sheens and light-refecting pigments.

A PROFILE TO PINPOINT YOUR PERFECT FILLER

I you eel overwhelmed by the task o selecting your next fller,we have some good news: Mercks new brochure is an excel-

    Color travel pigments

A LITTLE COLOR TRAVEL GOES A LONG WAY

When youre designing new color cosmetic shades, you dont have to count on just one

stand-out color to make your product turn heads. Pearlescent pigments especially

those with intererence color eects oer you more possibilities or truly eye-

catching eects. Our Xirona Color Travel pigments in particular are a sophisti-cated yet straightorward way to get creative. Using the right combination with

other colorants, you can achieve up to our colors within one cosmetic product.

Boasting brilliant and multiple eects, your premium cosmetic ormulations

are sure to earn a second look on the shel. Neighboring products (probably

only monochrome) will look at and tired by comparison.

    FORMULATE TO SURPRISE

Since color travel pigments shit rom one color to the next, you can take ull advantage

o them by using the element o surprise. This can be in un-expected places, like eyelids.

Or unexpected ways, such as taking one three-color travel pigment and complementing

it with a darker absorption color. This will create a ourth color.

Whats more, our color travel pigments are highly exible and suitable or color cosmetic

and personal care products alike. For real radiance, choose the brilliant sparkling eect

pigments with high transparency; the medium-sized particles are perect or a silkier

covering eect. And just a small amount delivers plenty o visual impact. Blend them

with pearlescent pigments, any approved organic or inorganic color, or both its

entirely up to you. And itll provide precisely the ascinating look you want!

Write to [email protected] or details on how to use color travel pigments in your color

cosmetics. Explore all our travel pigments at www.merck4cosmetics.com/colortravel.

against ree radicals, which make skin appear older. And since it mimics natural skin tones,Eusolex T-PRO is ideally suited to oundations, tinted emulsions, powders, and anhydrous

products. You can even mix it with color pigments or skin that looks beautiul and stays

healthy. Formulators will be delighted to know that Eusolex T-PRO has little eect on

coverage and reduces the greasiness o oil and wax-based ormulations.
