We are active with standards produc-ing bodies like USGBC and ASTM and also chair the Tile Council of North America’s Green Initiative, a very active committee that seeks to identify, promote, and improve tile’s green attributes. GREENGUARDThe EPA has identified poor indoor air quality as one of the top 5 risks to human health. In 2001, GEI was formed to test and certify products that are low in chemical emissions. GEI is an independent, 3rd party organization that is not affiliated with any of the companies or products it tests. To quantitatively evaluate products, GEI and its associated laboratories test representative samples to see what is given off over a set period of time. If the tested pieces pass the strict GREENGUARD emissions standards, the products are then certified as GREEGUARD certified for clean indoor air. In 2007, Florida Tile became the first US manufacturer to have our tile and stone products GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Children and Schools certified.

LEED

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guideline is a rating system to objectively determine how green a new building will be. It is important to note that no product is LEED certified. LEED certifies buildings. However, tile products can help in attaining points under the LEED guidelines in the following areas:MR 4 – up to 2 points for using materials with recycled contentMR 5 – up to 2 points for using materials mined and produced within 500 miles of the job site.SS 7.1 – a point is available for using materials outdoors that reflect the sunEQ 4.3 – a point is available for using flooring that is GREENGUARD Children and Schools certified.NAHB and other standardsEnvironmental standards continue to evolve. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has now established their National Green Building Standard. Like the LEED program, it offers points for regional material, recycled content, and indoor air quality. Many other standards and guidelines for green building exist and new ones are being added every day.

• Mix from at least 5 different boxes when installing your tile and fromdifferent pallets as you go.

• Order enough to do the whole installation including a safety factorso you get it from the same lot. Even if you re-order the same color, thelikelihood of it matching exactly is remote.

• Select trim with a similar shade. If you have a light shade field tile,order a light shade trim as well. If this is not available, a target shadeshould be used.

Technical characteristicsWe include a lot of numbers in our catalog and hand-outsthat are there to help you select the right tile for your application. Here is a guide to the numbers:

Coefficent of friction (COF)This tells how resistant the tile is to slipping, both when dryand when wet. A higher number is more resistant, but typically will have a rougher surface. Most commercial installations specify a wet COF of greater than 0.6.

Durability classificationSometimes also called the PEI rating. This number tells howresistant a glaze is to wear. A class 0 is the softest glaze, aclass V is the hardest. Higher numbers are more resistant towear. Porcelains typically are class III, IV or V and should be suitable for most home and commercial applications.Unglazed porcelain does not list a rating because the colorgoes all the way through.

Glaze hardnessThis number tells how easily the tile can be scratched. The higher the number from 1 - 10, the harder it is to scratch the glaze.

Breaking strengthA number that is computed from breaking a sample of the fired tile, the higher the number, the stronger the tile.

Aestetic classifications and shade variationsV-1 to V-4 rating with one being no shade variation andfour being completely random.

water absorptionA measure of the porosity of the tile, <0.5% is requiredto be a porcelain.

V1= Uniform Appearance:Differences among pieces from the same pro-duction run are minimal.

V2 = Slight Variation:Clearly distinguishable differences in

texture and/or pattern with similar colors.

V3 = Moderate Variation: While the colors present on a single piece oftile will be indicative of the colors to be ex-pected on the other tiles, the amount of col-ors on each piece may vary significantly.For example "that little bit of color" on onepiece of tile may be the primary color on thenext piece.

V4 = Random Variation:Random color differences from tile to tile, sothat one tile may have totally different colorsfrom that on other tiles. Thus, the final instal-lation will be unique.

In addition to size variation, the color inslate is very random. Although differentquarries have different general appearances, the range in slate can gofrom very light to very dark. Florida Tile'sslate offerings include: Pietra Art Slate &Pietra Art Tumbled Slate.

When to useSlate can be used for walls in any residential or commercial setting. It canalso be used for floors and countertops in residential and light commercial installations. It should not be used outside in freeze/thaw prone areas, it willcome apart. We do not recommend slatefor outdoor installations. If you do chooseto use slate outside, it is common to seecolor bleed out of the slate into the grout and is especially common in theCopper color.

What to watch forSlate is very prone to breakage, the broken pieces can be used for cuts during

installation. Shaling and flaking will occur, these are inherentcharacteristics of slate. You will get shade variation. To have thebest chance for success:

A sealer doesn't do a whole lot for slate, the stone doesn't havea lot of natural pores. It is safe to use a sealer, however.

Expect lippage and thickness variation. Expect color variationand texture variation. Expect shaling and flaking.

Some veins in slate are very soft, if these soft stones are not desirable for the installation they should be culled out duringinstallation.

GraniteGranite is a very hard rock that has mineral inclusions giving itcolor and depth. Florida Tile's granite tiles are cut, rectified andpolished. Although Granite has less variation than otherstones, there is still a range for each product.

When to useGranite is a good choice for residential and commercial walls,countertops, and floors. Care should be taken when used asflooring, polished granite is very slippery when wet.

What to watch forOur granite pieces are cut to exacting tol-erances but there can be up to 1MM of dif-ference in size from piece to piece. The tilesmust be laid carefully if a grout joint is notbeing used. Best results occur with a groutjoint of at least 1/8".

If the Granite will be exposed to spills or moisture, seal the stone with a penetrating sealer after installation andyearly thereafter. Granite is very dense butdoes have some porosity.

Do not use abrasive cleaners on polished stones such as granite.

If scratches do occur, the stone can be buffedback to its original appearance by a stoneprofessional.

Other stone itemsIn addition to the above broad categories, Florida Tile has some specialty

stone items. Here are some tips:

PietraArt AccentsThese murals are printed on light travertine and include the natural voids of the stone. Tapeshould not be applied to the surface of the mural, the acids inthe adhesives can remove the print. These murals can fade if exposed to direct sunlight for longperiods of time.

OnyxOur Pietra Art Classic Mosaics line includes many onyx tiles,mosaics and trims. Onyx is extremely fragile, care must betaken in handling, cutting and installing onyx.

PebblesThickness variation in the size of the pebbles is common, inspect sheets before installing and mix from different boxes and crates.
