Volume 18, Issue 9 September 2020

All product is currently in good supply with key fungicides and insecticides in stock. Despite talk of flooding in China potentially affecting glyphosate in the short-term, Cummins Ag have secured enough supply of DST, Ultramax or 450 for the rest of the year.

We have fungicide, trace elements (Copper) and Weedmaster DST for crop-topping at the Aerotech Cummins base for those wanting to apply with the plane.

Cummins Ag will be organising to deliver product for seeding towards the end of this year in an attempt to minimise any Covid disruption. This presents our growers with the opportunity to take Roundup, Trifluralin, Sakura etc. with June 2021 terms.

Please contact us at the store on (08) 8676 2161 for more details.

Golf Day & Nutrien Brand Launch The team at Cummins Ag Services were extremely pleased with the turnout for our much-anticipated Golf Day and Nutrien Brand launch.

Including the few early showers, it was a great day had by all.

To those valued clients that were able to attend, we thank you for supporting the event and for braving the drizzly conditions. It was great to finally have an opportunity to catch up for a few laughs.

We would also like to extend a massive thank you to the following:

Cummins Golf Club for allowing us to go ahead with the day and for being vital contributors to the day's success.

All of our wonderful suppliers & sponsors for getting behind us and for the merchandise donations that we were able to reward our clients with, under the guise of prizes.

Events such as these just are not possible without the support and sponsorship, and the great attendance makes it even more worthwhile.

The Agronomy Angle—Automated Insect Traps Cummins Ag have been using manual insect sticky traps for monitoring diamond back moth, heliothis and etiella for a number of years, and now there is an automated version that uses the same pheromone lures and sticky traps but is equipped with an onboard camera to detect, count and report on your targeted pest in real time.

Being able to do daily counts helps to make phenology models more precise so we can time the use of pesticides better. It also means that we are able to catch potential problems early and prevent large crop losses from insect damage.

We first started using these automated traps in 2018 to monitor DBM, heliothis and etiella insects at key timings.

We are able to log into an app or access a webpage and view what the traps have captured the previous day (see bottom left for an example from late August 2019). The green rectangles are captures from the same day the trap is being accessed and the red ones are from previous days’ captures, confirmed as DBM. As the image below demonstrates, this technology is able to correctly identify your target insect species and ignore non-target insects.

We plan to use these traps as part of an ongoing commitment to providing our growers with the best up-to-date information to protect their crops and being able to make strategic decisions to spray a particular pest, based on up to the minute monitoring with the latest technology.

For more information about this technology, please speak to your agronomist.

R & D Update Thankyou to everyone who braved the arctic conditions to

come for a look at our herbicide trials in early August.

There were over 150 treatments at the site looking at

grass and broadleaf weed control in cereals, pulses and

canola.

The trials showcase a range of new herbicides showing

promise for growers on Lower Eyre Peninsula and are set

for release now and over the next 18 months. Syngenta’s

Reflex in pulses, FMC’s Overwatch for ryegrass and bifora

control and Adama’s Ultro for ryegrass control in pulses

show good potential and are due for release next year.

Our annual Agronomy Day will be held on Thursday, 24th September. Please jot this date down in your diaries.

There will be some changes made to the usual structure of the day based on the COVID situation and these will be

advised closer to the date.
