The Library Presents…Arts Alive

MENU

Introduction

Welcome to the programme of events on offer for The Library Presents…Arts Alive scheme funded by Arts Council England.

We have worked hard over the last couple of months to encourage as many acts as possible to engage with the scheme and we have been overwhelmed and delighted by the response.

This menu will enable you to select what you think would be most enjoyed by your community. We hope that you will find shows that interest you and which you think will go down well.

All the artists and companies that are featured in this menu have been selected because they are (a) of good quality and (b) offering a performance/workshops suitable for library spaces. In some cases the artists or companies have chosen to create work especially for the scheme. They are reliable, professional and used to coping with limited facilities. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring something new or unusual to your library space. Do not be afraid to take risks or try something different.

There are two ‘seasons’ when activity needs to take place.

Season one (October / November 2017) Season two (February / March 2018)

Each library needs to select 2 events for each season (4 in total). We would like one of these 4 to be a series of workshops.

Due to the number of libraries involved in the scheme (10) and the fact that some of the acts have limited availability, we anticipate that we may be unable to accommodate everyone’s first choices. We would therefore like each library to provide 2 back up choices should these be required. i.e.

Once your acts have been confirmed you will receive more detailed information about the show and we will liaise with you make all the necessary arrangements with regard to marketing, tickets and staging the event.

In the meantime please contact [email protected] if you have any queries.

Happy selecting...have fun...be brave!

Act: SCREEN PRINTING (Ricki Outis)

Available: Both seasons Libraries: All Libraries Screen printing is a great for people of all ages and abilities. Everyone loves the moment when the screen is lifted revealing the print.

Idea 1 This is a fantastic way to promote the library whilst giving workshop participants an opportunity to make their own creative statement. Ricki would design and create a frame in the shape of a book on a silk screen. The frame includes library name and possibly a logo. At the top of the book frame would be a title such as: “A good read:” Each participant draws an image of something from their favourite book. They cut out this image that they have drawn, and are helped to screen print it into the centre of the book frame. These can be printed on book bags, T-shirts or other textiles. This can be run as:

a) a roll on/roll off, drop in session- can do max of about 70- 80 people in a 4 – 5 hour day but would need 2 artists. If that’s too expensive, then I would need 2 good volunteers. b) or it can be a smaller workshop in its own right – a 2 hour session for about 12 people. Idea 2 To make a colourful screen printed banner / curtain / table cloth / bunting. This could be book or story themed. The banner would be marked up into squares and each person would print one square. The fabric can be fire proofed so that it can become a permanent part of the library, it can be used to celebrate an event or it can travel to other venues. Can be formatted as above (drop in session) or as workshop of 12 people. Much easier to do indoors, but need access to water e.g. kitchen sink at the end of a session.

Act: ILLUSTRATION (Karin Littlewood)

Available: Both seasons Libraries: All Libraries

Karin’s workshops are very interactive and there most definitely will be amazing artwork at the end of it which will inspire the children to be authors and illustrators too and write and illustrate their own stories! She usually works with groups of up to 30 children. IMMI WORKSHOPS 'Immi' , a story of friendship across the world and how the simplest of things bring the greatest joy. I've done 'Immi' workshops with children and adults of all ages, from 2 to 92! They are adapted to suit each age group and are based around the power of illustration to tell a story through pictures, which then inspire the written word. It's the way all my stories are born..... I have some specially commissioned 'Immi' music we listen to as the children arrive (this usually includes them having fun with some

snowflake 'hand -dancing !") I can also show a slide show of the book if possible as I read the story. I can read the story of 'Immi', followed by a questions and answers session. This can be a very interactive session where the

children talk about what their favourite characters from the book and as long as I can have some large sheets of paper, I can do lots of 'live action' drawings. When I'm working with the older children they will each be working on an A3 sheet of paper with the image of Immi fishing printed nice and big so it fills the page.I can send a template for this beats the time. I'll show the children some easy ways to draw the things that inspired them in the story, show them some techniques and we'll really think about the use of colour in telling a story. They will draw one thing in each ice block in the igloo with but right from the start will be thinking about how this cast of characters can be turned into a brand new story. If, for instance, someone loved drawing the polar bear then it could easily become the main character in their own story. When the igloo is filled with the illustrations, and they have talked about their ideas for a new story, a piece of string is then attached onto Immi's hands in my drawing. This is her line and she's now fishing for words! Any ideas, descriptions, wonderful words, sounds ... are written on small pieces of paper and stuck on the line. The children will then have in front of them everything they will need to inspire them to write their own stories and make their own picture books . You will need a good selection of coloured pencil crayons, a ball of wool or string, scissors www.karinlittlewood.com

Act: DRACULA…THE TRAVESTY (Northumberland Theatre Company)

Available: Both seasons (season 2 preferred) Libraries: All Libraries

‘You've read ‘Dracula The Book’, you’ve seen ‘Dracula The Film’ now NTC presents "Dracula... The Travesty!’ Devised and created by NTC actor and writer, Stewart Howson, from the novel by Bram Stoker. Light, funny and daft but with strong storytelling and some genuinely scary moments this is Gothic storytelling at its best: imaginative, atmospheric and physically exciting. Appealing to family audiences it features all the anticipated

elements of the story: wolves, bats and the Brides of Dracula with plenty of audience participation, humour and music. This production will feature 3 professional actors and will work in any space small or large. With a running time of approx one hour this show can be performed with or without an interval and is equally suited to supper/dinner theatre. ‘The play was fabulous and mesmerising- not what some had expected as it told; nay, disembowelled Bram Stoker’s story in a way that sent shivers down the spine as we alternatively laughed and covered our faces in horror rapidly in succession. I cannot commend the Northumberland Theatre Company highly enough for bringing us yet again such an entertaining experience.’ Whitburn Village Hall

Act: THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF AND OTHER FURRY TAILS (Theatre of Widdershins)

Available: Both seasons Libraries: All Libraries

The perplexing question of fairytales - what really happened between the wolf and his three porky friends? Why was Goldilocks wandering in the woods? How did the goats overcome a mighty troll - are explored and explained by the wonderful Theatre of Widdershins with the help of fun, laughter, some gorgeous puppets and a soundtrack that will stick in your head long after you've left the theatre. Suitable for everyone aged 3+ and their pet trolls. The whole show is one hour long, but it is possible to perform the three stories (3 Little Pigs; Goldilocks & the 3 Bears; and Three Billyg

Goats Gruff) individually or with intervals. Recently, Widdershins have been performing ‘3 Little Pigs’ and ‘Goldilocks’ as a double bill. This ends up being a 40 minutes show and works really well for nursery and reception age. For small audience numbers (up to about 90)

STORYTELLING Using a few simple props and an old pirate’s treasure chest I have a variety of tales to tell – the most popular being ‘The Princess & The Pea’. These are very good for small/odd spaces; require no electricity. These stories work really well with the 6 – 10 age range. Maximum number: 60. Due to the participation element the running time does vary but they are generally 30 to 40 minutes long.

WORKSHOPS Our standard workshop is a puppet making one. It’s called ‘Watching, Playing, Making’. I have done this is many schools to many different ages, but I think it works best with teh 6 – 10 age range. Although the practical requirements (eg. space, tables and adult helpers) need consideration, it is a “tried and tested” workshop and creates no mess at all! (No paint and very little glue). Maximum number: 30 (adult helpers welcome)

COMBINATION OF STORY + WORKSHOP I sometimes combine a storytelling sitting of ‘Princess & The Pea’ with the puppet making workshop, since both things utilise the humble potato (a firm friend of the Fenland!) to create the puppet. www.widdershins.co.uk

LITERATURE

Act: CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP & SHARING / PERFORMANCE (Fen Speak Poetry Collective) Available: Both seasons (limited to a maximum of two libraries per season) Libraries: March, Littleport, Soham, Arbury Court, Barnwell Road A series of 6 Creative Writing workshops (each 2 hours long) followed by a sharing/performance session, on the theme of local history, myth and legend, using different writing techniques and styles. Up to 12 participants per session, pre-booked via the library.

The performance/sharing session:

1 hour running time.

Sharing of work produced by the workshop participants.

Format will be agreed in consultation with the workshop participants.

Possibility of combining this session with other events/festivals taking place as part of the ‘Library Presents…’ project.

Aimed at: Adults (14+) / Beginners or those with some writing experience The workshops will be led by Leanne Moden and Elaine Ewart, former Fenland Poets Laureate, who are published poets and experienced workshop leaders. Both have led workshops in Fenland libraries previously and received excellent feedback for their work. They are founder members of the Fen Speak Poetry Collective, which has been running poetry and spoken word events in East Cambridgeshire for over four years. Each workshop will consist of a 2 hour session, during which participants will create and share their writing through a series of games and activities. Props such as old photographs or objects will be used to inspire ideas and associations, and these ideas will form the basis of their writing during the session. The aim of the sessions is to help participants engage with creative writing and express themselves, while expanding their writing skills, exploring new techniques, and having fun! The workshops will be free-standing, so that participants do not have to attend them all in order to benefit from them, but together form a cohesive whole, during which time participants will have the opportunity to develop a piece of work to be shared at a concluding sharing/performance session. The sharing session will be organised

and curated by the workshop leaders, and will be open to friends and family of participants. It will give writers the opportunity to engage with their written work in an entirely new format, and the sharing session itself will form a celebratory finale to the workshop series. It will also serve a focal point for the work and give participants a defined goal to work towards. Writers who are not comfortable with performing their own work can opt for one of the workshop leaders to read it aloud on their behalf, and support for participants with specific needs can be negotiated with the workshop leaders on a case by case basis. Requirements Quiet room with tables for the workshops. Refreshments for participants half way through (if facilities do not exist for this we will, where possible, arrange this ourselves at an additional cost). Wi-Fi link would also be helpful. For the sharing/ performance session, a small room (seating 20 or so) without excessive noise interference. Some flexibility is possible if it is proposed that this session is incorporated into another event. https://www.fenlandpoetry.co.uk/

Since 1991 Alison has done over 780 author events, and can offer talks on a wide variety of topics based on my books and related subjects. Where appropriate, Alison normally bring to each event a book for a prize, to be given after the Q&A. I usually suggest that the organiser sticks a post-it note under one of the seats before the audience arrives, so that whoever is sitting there, or nearest if it is under an empty chair, wins the book. Or the organiser can choose the best question. This is an enjoyable way to end an event. Unless otherwise stated, Alison’s talks last for about 45 minutes, although she can adapt them to different lengths, depending on requirements. Workshop series: sharing stories A workshop series which will enable parents, library staff, and other interested adults gain skills in telling and reading stories to children, set up and run a monthly storytelling club in the library. It features fun games and exercises, practise in telling stories in a relaxed and supportive environment, and lots of laughter. Participants will also have opportunities to tell stories with groups of children. The sessions will need input from library staff or a member of the library’s Friends to publicise the event, help select suitable participants, and build a group of child listeners, but once the group is up and running it shouldn’t need too much ongoing support. I have run similar sessions in other libraries, and am still involved with the group in my local library, which has been going for over three years now. 2 hour sessions recommended, and space to move around in and make some noise would be useful. Between 6 and 12 group members is an ideal size. www.friendsofmiltonroadlibrary.org.uk/index.asp?pageid=486709

Discover and practice your oral storytelling skills and see how it improves your health, intellect, creativity, and confidence.

These workshops can be delivered as one-offs (in which case they will almost always be beginner's workshops), or as part of a series. If part of a workshop series, we recommend between 6 and 8 sessions. Optional: these workshops could be combined with All the Better to EAT You With, a "Story Slam" and/or a final public performance to add an element of recognition for the participants. Target audience | Can be suitable for children aged 7-11; young people aged 12-16; adults 17+; or a combination of all these. However, it's useful to know in advance which age range we'll need to cater for.

Children with a love of story have been proven, by the UCL's Institute for Education, to outperform their peers in all school subjects – so give your family a head start with these invaluable techniques and tips! Target audience | Parents with children aged 2-11.

7. Who Made England? – Performance Did you know English people were around before the country of England was invented? It's true: just over 1,000 years ago, English people lived in several smaller countries all over the island of Britain – each with their own kings, heroes, and legends. Join international storyteller Chip Colquhoun as he explores some of these legends on a quest to find England's birthday – and the men and women who made a country... Running time is 150min inclusive of interval. Target audience | Either families with children aged 7-11 or ages 16+.

8. Destined – Performance When the great wizard Merlin told Prince Uther that he was destined to marry Lady Igraine in order to sire the greatest king of all time, his response was that of a typical teenager – to rebel! But his fiery young stubbornness had violent and devastating consequences for the last remaining Romans in Britain... The legend of King Arthur's father is a dark, exhilarating tale that will leave you pondering your purpose in life. Forget King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – learn the real truth of Camelot's origins in the original way they would have been told: oral storytelling! Running time is 150min inclusive of interval. Addendum PERFORMANCE

Available for both seasons. All venues.

‘Transcendence’ (working title), written and performed by Genevieve Wedgbury

Transcendence is a poem, a song, a dance, an invitation, an exhortation, a lament.

It is the unspoken story of one woman sharing those moments where something beautiful, strong and pure has

broken through the limits of our own perception - trees become sermons, and ancient words in black and white

become our own breath and soul cry.

All these experiences elevate where we are, and point towards deeper meaning and possibility often beyond

what we dare to hope.

It is personal, challenging and up-lifting.

Above all, it is a powerful celebration of life and goodness.

Running time 45 minutes (approx).

Minimal props and staging required.
