From the Rev. Kathy Gibson, Associate Minister

Winifred Bailey

Director of Traditional Worship and Music

About a month ago, our Learning Team made a presentation in worship on what we’ve learned about our church and barriers that may prevent growth. Over the past month, we have continued our learning process and will make presentations this Sunday. Team members will take 5-10 minutes at the beginning of each Sunday School class to share information on cultural trends, pertinent demographics and thoughts from community leaders on our church and community. Those who don’t attend Sunday School classes will meet in the sanctuary at 9:30 for the same presentation. Besides sharing the information, the team will be seeking brief feedback on the information that is presented. Our goal with the whole process is to identify those things that prevent growth and create a plan of action to overcome them. We intend to have a report with an action plan to Church Council in October. We appreciate everyone’s prayers and participation.

May God’s Peace Be with You,

Greg

Fall is in the air! Of course, we can feel it and sense it some days more clearly than others, but we know it is coming. It is always exciting for me when the seasons change, but I especially look forward to fall and the start of school and all the events and activities that go with this time of year. We also start new programs and activities and ministries in our church life in the fall. Many of them are mentioned in articles in the Proclaim. Please prayerfully consider getting back into the church “habit” this fall. We have covenanted to support our local church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness – all five, not just a couple of them here and there, but all of them all the time! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday mornings and evenings and Wednesday evenings as we gather to worship and study and to spend time together which strengthens and equips us to live each day out in the world as those who join with God in “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world!” See you Sunday!

Shalom, Kathy

No, this is not a study on the theology of Paul Harvey! This is what we hope will be a time together in which we can share our own stories of where we have seen God at work in our lives during the past few days. We have so many opportunities to study and to read the Bible and to gain “information” about our faith. We also can benefit from having a time to share moments of “transformation” with one another and to encourage one another on our walk with God through our daily lives. Anyone who is interested in sharing in this type of group is invited to join us from 7:20 – 8:20 on Wednesday evenings in the chapel beginning September 16. There is no curriculum, just a time of sharing with one another: in the words of John Wesley, “how is it with your soul?” Kathy Gibson and Marilyn Hugon will be facilitating this time together.

Hey Church! If you have not heard the news yet, Bryan

Gerhart and I (Gus Echols) have taken an interim position in

taking care of the Youth and Connexion. If you don't know

us come find us, we would love to talk to you. Sunday,

August 23, we had a Youth Council Meeting and a Parent

meeting. I believe they both went smoothly and will be a big

help for the year to come. This Wednesday, August 26, the

first Elevate will kick-off at 6:15 with the youth. We are so

excited to see what God has in store for this ministry. We

ask that you keep praying for the students and teachers as

school begins and that God is seen in us in the classrooms,

halls, and everyday lives. Thanks Everyone!

The music for Sunday, August 30, includes an

arrangement of “Amazing Grace” entitled,

“Grace.” This lovely setting puts the words of

the beloved hymn to a folk tune, “The Water Is

Wide.” The Introit will be a solo by Jai Brancich.

Jai has put together his arrangement of “What A

Wonderful World.”

Come and worship with us through fellowship,

music, prayer, scripture and the spoken word.

How Do You In reading and studying the book The Call by Adam Hamilton, the question, “How do you worship?” was raised. Hamilton suggests that as we enter the space for worship we should come expecting to be blessed. We should come expecting to be energized. We should come prepared to receive God’s call to each of us as we implement the plan that he has for our lives. Hamilton says that he brings a pen and paper to worship each time he enters the sanctuary. When God speaks, he is ready to write down the plan. If the minister of the church believes this strongly in the call to each individual at any time, and especially when we worship, shouldn’t we also?
