Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
National Reconciliation Week is 27 May to 3 June. Ocean Day
will offer an opportunity to focus on reconciliation, to hear about
the cultures and histories of Gumbaynggirr and Dunghutti
people and explore ways of coming together to celebrate
Aboriginal culture. Best practice in Aboriginal Education is
through the implementation of programs, professional learning
opportunities for staff and community engagement. Two
important days timed with reconciliation week are the 1967
referendum (27 May) and Mabo day (3 June).
To continue this journey of reconciliation, mark on your calendar
Ocean Day Friday June 8. It is our annual event of welcoming
the whales. We have 6 other schools joining us this year and
there are lots of cultural activities such as dance, didgeridoo,
weaving and games to name a few. Also, recording and
identifying through art, the seasonal indicators of when the
whales are passing north. Come along, pack a picnic and
celebrate with us. We will be meeting at the reserve at 9.30am
for a 10am start.
School Readiness
Are you thinking of enrolling your child next year? Starting school
is a big step for little kids. You might have heard the term
‘school readiness’ – but what does it really mean? Find out all
about school readiness and how you can help your child prepare
for big school by coming to our school readiness meeting and
listen to a National Expert to help you make an informed
choice. This will be held from 3.30-4.30pm on Tuesday 5/6.

of our relentless focus
on leadership, in all its
forms, contributing to continuous progress on key indicators of
teacher growth and student achievement.
In David’s experience, more effective schools are those that can
establish and sustain processes and structures that honour
professional practice, foster closer collaboration, encourage
individual resiliency, and concentrate on providing the best
possible educational services to every student.

David and Marilyn were highly impressed with our students and
staff growth. They will be back again in September. Go Team !
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Cross
Country at Nana Glen last Friday. There were two outstanding
performances from Tegan Evans (1st) and Kasimir Vallance (2nd) in
their respective races. Now both are off to the North Coast Cross
Country on 13 June. Thanks to all the parents for providing
transport and support on the day.
William Devereaux returned from a week of AFL in Batemans Bay.
He played six games and won two out of the six games. Thirteen
teams competed and the North Coast came 10th. Congratulations
William and the North Coast team.
Senior Excursion Changes
Due to the increased hire costs for buses, the small schools have
changed the format of our senior excursions. Excursions will still be
on a three year rotation: 1) Sydney and Canberra, 2) A sustainability
camp, 3) Outdoor education.
A sustainability camp will be held this year at the Cascade
Environmental Centre at Dorrigo National Park. Notes for this year‘s
camp will be sent out soon. This format should be far more
affordable for most families, as we want all students to enjoy this
wonderful opportunity.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Got It! Tip of the Week
Emotional moments can be an opportunity to teach your child and build your
relationship with him. One way to do this is spending a few minutes each
day talking with your child about emotional events happening in his life. This
quality time might happen after school, after dinner, or at bedtime. Not all
children will want to talk openly about feelings. Be patient and try talking
when you are doing something together, like driving or doing household
tasks. But if she doesn’t want to talk, it is important not to pressure her. This
is not the time to discipline; it is just a time for listening and reflecting your
child’s emotions. Over time, this will build your child’s trust in you and help
her to feel more comfortable with sharing her feelings.

regulate their emotions.

What's been in happening in 5/6
In our class we were listening to this test that tested your hearing. If you heard Yanny you’re
wrong! It is actually scientifically proven that it’s Laurel. Scientists say that 53% of people
think that it’s Laurel and only 43% of people think that it’s Yanny. The original sound
recording was of Laurel. Scientists believe that it is to do with your age and also it’s to do
with the pitch of the voice. If you put it down 30% it sounds like Yanny, but if you put it up
30% it sounds like Laurel. Because it’s in the middle it sounds like Yanny and Laurel – so
the debate continues! It certainly divided our class and we realised that we need to
remember that everyone sees and hears things differently. By Nina and Caylem
Blue and Black or Gold and White
Have you ever seen something that someone else can’t see? Well, there’s this
amazing thing on the internet that shows a dress that some people say they can see
gold and white but then the other side of people say they can see a black and blue
and blue dress. We are still arguing about the colour of the dress as we are writing
this. This is because of a thing called ‘colour constancy’ where your eyes adjust and
the brain makes assumptions on the colour of dress. Just so you know - the original
dress was blue and black! By Allie and Jace
We have been very busy in the 5/6 class. We have been on google
classroom, written about democratic leaders on padlet, we have
presented decade projects, we've been finding out about angles,
triangles, coordinates and learning about fractions, decimals and
percentages. We regularly add our work to our websites as a digital
portfolio. In Indonesian we have been studying how electricity
works and can come from different sources. We have also used
Quizlet Live to learn about definitions of words in Indonesian as
well as learning about the Government as part of History. By Dimity
Visit from Macksville High School Sports Science
On Wednesday Mrs Jenny Conway and three students from Macksville High School
visited the 5/6 students. They came to talk to us about science and the use of
science to improve sport. We came up with hypothesis, chose our own equipment
and then completed our scientific investigations. Some people chose types of bats
and how this changes how far a ball will go, different types of running shoes, running
with different types of arms and how this changes the speed and whether playing
soccer or NRL increases your heart rate more. Then we came back inside and wrote
our reports that tallied our results. This included creating graphs. We then wrote our
reports in Google Docs, created graphs in Microsoft Excel and uploaded them to our
websites. We look forward to sharing these with the high school soon. By Imogen
Greg Inglis NRL Day
Last Thursday we had a gala day at Geoff King Oval. These are the people from our
school that played—Jalaara, Kalahni, Elkie, Grace, Jace, Imogen, Jye, Caylem, Nina,
Liam and Kobi. The best part of the day was cooperating as team and winning all our
games. It was also good to see other local people and make some new friends. Thank
you to Bu Cass, Stacy MIners and Michael Walker for transporting us up there. Liam
Azzopardi got selected as the best and fairest of the day.
Well done Liam! By Kalahni
