Plataforma Solar De Almería (PSA)

The Plataforma Solar de Almería(PSA) is the largest research, development, and testing center dedicated to concentrating solar technology in Europe.

A key topic of interest for the visitors to PSA was what role does publicly-funded research and development play in a country’s policy towards CSP, and how does the learning get disseminated globally. They listened with great interest to explanations of which technological developments had proved to work well and which had not. It gave everyone a deeper appreciation of the R&D process.

Solúcar Solar Complex

Various solar technologies are represented at the Solúcar Solar Complex, including tower and parabolic trough CSP. This site is home to PS 10 and PS 20 the first two CSP Tower plants to be deployed commercially.

At this site, visitors learned about the evolution of Tower technology as well as the relative merits of this technology vis-à-vis parabolic trough. During this visit, visitors asked questions about the practical differences between these technologies. The answers enabled them to deepen their understanding of the two most widespread CSP technologies.

Gemasolar

Gemasolar was the first commercial CSP Tower plant to employ molten salts both as heat transfer fluid (HTF) and storage medium.

Members of the Jordanian delegation showed keen interest in learning about the specifics of operating a molten salt CSP Tower plant, specifically aspects related to dispatchability and how molten salts can help maintain output during adverse atmospheric conditions. Visitors left Gemasolarwith an enhanced understanding of molten salt Towers and the added benefits that this technology brings to operators.

“La Africana” CSP Plant

La Africana (Parabolic Trough with molten salt storage) is the best performing CSP plant in Spain.

At La Africana, visitors furthered their understanding of operations and maintenance of CSP plants. On the operations side, most questions revolved around how molten salt thermal storage enhances the plant operator’s ability to respond to demands from the grid operator.

Visitors left La Africana with a deeper understanding of how molten salt technology continues to evolve to CSP make plants even more dispatchable.

Red Eléctrica de España (REE) Control Centre of Renewable Energies (CECRE)

REE, the sole transmission operator (TSO) in Spain, started the Control Centre of Renewable Energies (CECRE) in 2006, to better integrate renewable energy.

The Jordanian delegates’ questions focused on the role of CSP in maintaining system reliability, particularly when variable renewables make up a large part of the energy generation fleet.

Visitors could get a better grasp of the ways in which the TSO could better integrate renewables into the grid. They also learned that REEtreats CSP plants as fully dispatchable.

Ministry of Energy, Tourism, and Digital Agenda (MINETAD)

Ministry of Energy, Tourism, and Digital Agenda (MINETAD), is one of the 13 ministries that make up the Spanish government. MINETAD has renewable energy policy as one of its functions.

Visitors posed questions about the role of government policy in regulating the deployment and operation of renewable energy technologies such as CSP.

This visit enabled the Jordanian delegation to get an insight into the policy lessons garnered by the Spanish government, gaining valuable information about the policies that could be applied to bolster the energy system in Jordan, as well as those that are best avoided.
